TEACHING

The Physiology course for medical student s was taught along the usuallines, however some thought was given to new approaches and some experi-mentation was carried out in presenting the practical portion of the course, looking forward to the pos sible requirements of a new curriculum. Wesubstituted demonstrations for several difficult experiments which havebeen carried out by students in previous years. It appeared that thisprocedure was quite successful, as judged by faculty and student response, but of course these evaluations as always are subjective. We plan tocontinue experimenting with some of these ideas during the next academicyear.

During the past year we added two new courses to our offerings forgraduate students: a course on Gastroenterology by Dr. Rhodes, and acourse on Excitable Membranes by Dr. Tarr. Both of these courseshave been approved by the Graduate Council.

STAFF

Dr. Alan Thompson was away from the department on a sabbatical leavein Copenhagen from January until June. His duties were shared by severalmembers of the department in his absence. On January 1, Dr. Goetz beganan internship at St. Luke's Hospital and his appointment was changed fromAssistant Professor to Lecturer. Dr. Richard L. Clancy joined our staffas Assistant Professor on July 1, 1969. He brings added strength to ourdepartment in the area of cardiovascular physiology.

GRADUA TE STUDENTS

We admitted two new graduate students at the beginning of the academicyear; Mr. Yih Loong Lai and Mr. Chung-ning Pang. Both of these studentshave demonstrated their ability to stand well into the upper part of the classin competition with our medical students, and we expect both of them to
