What I’ve Done&What I Will DoLarry HillTeaching and Curriculum Fall 2011Empire State College
An eclectic look at past endeavors that reveal my science persona!
Keep an eye on the grey box for how my persona will help paint a picture of science for students!
Research into “living technologies” – natural methods for wastewater and stormwater treatment.
Let students get hands on experience with topics that interest them!
RESEARCH isn’t about gathering facts to complete a task. It’s about gathering knowledge that stays with you throughout the life long learning process!
LIFE LONG LEARNING – It’s a way of life
DATA COLLECTIONThis is what data collection looks like!
There is diversity in EVERYTHING. Even gathering data!
DATA COLLECTIONOr this!
Collecting soil samples: it’s a dirty job!
Science humor. Get used to it kids! When you’re older, you’ll understand…
There is diversity in EVERYTHING. Even gathering data!
Science put to work for everyone
Science has many applications, and can help (or hurt) everyone.
Science at the local level• Helping local dairy
farmers control contaminated runoff
• Helps the farmer• Helps the community• Helps the environment• Helps the students
learn!
Science put to work for everyone
Science has many applications, and can help (or hurt) everyone.
Science at the national level
• Energy Production• Everyday luxuries that
we take for granted• Sustainability and
Responsibility
Science is a double-edged sword. The power technology gives us comes with great responsibility.
RESPONSIBILITY
Science put to work for everyone
Science has many applications, and can help (or hurt) everyone.
Science at the global level• War
• Treatment of disease• Availability of food• Sustainability • Environmental conscience
Harnessing the brain – Taming a storm of thoughts so they can be utilized!
• This presentation of my persona was intentionally arranged in an eclectic fashion to model how I think.o Lots of ideas that come and go quicklyo Serves me well for academicso Serves me not so well for application
So if you were to ask me “Larry, what does your science persona look like?”
I would tell you it looks like this….
Hey, if it works! Why not?
Current Teaching M.A.T. Residency @ Glens Falls High School
3 Regents Physics Sections & 1 Non-Regents “Applied Physics”
11th-12th graders Started a physics blog to allow for discussion of class
concepts. Will use this as a vehicle for incorporating literacy instruction (ELA Common Core Standards).
8 week student teaching in the Spring. For now, I get involved in class discussion, help
students during seat work, group activities, and labs. Getting involved in the curriculum planning process. Teach lessons or parts of lessons from time to time.
Pre-M.A.T. Summary B.S. in Forest Engineering from The
SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (2009) Focus on natural alternatives for waste
water treatment & ecological engineering Brief experience as a Design Engineer
for a small Glens Falls firm. Mostly site design and stormwater for
municipal and private residential clients
An Exciting Teaching Tool I intend to use video games in the classroom as a
teaching, simulating, and modeling tool. Games, especially those with advanced physics engines, are prime examples of the application of physics outside the classroom.
Portal, Portal 2, and their map-editors will allow for discussion of physics in a realm that is familiar and enjoyable for high school students.
Even the game developers have caught on to the idea that their product can be used for much more than just entertainment: http://www.learnwithportals.com/
