Significant parts of the community receive water only every 8 days. The widespread culture of hoarding water may contribute to over 80% of children being infected with parasites and to the spread of mosquito-borne Dengue fever. Shortage of water is not caused by physical unavailability but by high pumping cost due to poorly designed system. Being Las Delicias situated on the hill of a volcano, in summer 2012 our team constructed a new tank at the mid-point altitude between the well in the valley and the current tanks at the top of the village. Four hundred meters of piping have been laid to latch the newly built tank into the current supply and distribution systems. Our goal is to avoid pumping water to the existing tanks at high elevation, thus, providing about 30% more water for the same price and to aid in this will be a VFD to correct their power factor as well as automating the pumps so as to pump during off-peak hours. Once the construction phase of the implementation is terminated, and once the new system performs as expected, we will proceed with setting up educational programs to help steer away from hoarding water practices with the village through our NGO on the ground. Other future improvements may involve improvements in the school, supplying Potters for Peace water filters, and locally making fuel-efficient charcoal stoves to avoid smoke pollution.
