was attered when I was asked to serve as the

010 Advisory Council Chairman o Vegas Young

roessionals (VYP) or 2010. Ive been a member Vegas Young Proessionals since October 2007,

nd I have enjoyed so many o the events Ive been

ble to attend. Ive had lots o un and met so many

reat people. I cant thank VYP Coordinator Joanna

Rodriguez enough or strong arming me or

uggesting I join VYP years back. Joining VYP was a

reat decision or me and my business.

you dont know, Vegas Young Proessionals is or

as Vegas proessionals between the ages o 21 and

9 looking to build their business network while

aving un. VYP has everything rom Fusion Mixers, which are business networking events in non-business

urroundings, to Business 101 which are expert panels

speakers to help you optimize your business. We

ave our own Toastmasters club, Bigwig Lunch Time

    meetings and some great excursions.

However, heres the kicker: Its not about VYP. Its

about you. Networking is about the relationships you

make wherever you are. Vegas Young Proessionalshas the venues, speakers, atmosphere and people that

allow those relationships to happen. You just need

to get involved. Start building relationships now and

youll see your business grow and those relationships

start to snowball. It doesnt matter how you start those

    relationships.

Lets ace it, starting a business is hard. Getting clients

is not an easy thing to do right now. When you start a

business, usually the frst thing you do it tell everyone

you know (online and oine) about your new venture.

But, then what? Then you get out and meet new people!Keep building those relationships and show more

people that youre worthy o their business and their

reerrals. I call it being A-visible - Which is being

Available and Visible so people can fnd you when they

need a bit o help. Eventually, youll start to gain their

trust and be their Go-to person in your industry.

eveloping strategic alliances as a tool or

medium-sized businesses that may otherwise not

have the opportunity to recycle. Since up to 90

percent o traditional ofce waste can be recycled,

these services, packaged together, allow customers

to have document destruction and recycling servi

    combined. For convenience and efciency,

recyclables can be commingled in one bin and pick

    Business News

ou might be surprised to learn that one o the

biggest obstacles to successully operating a home-

based business isnt access to cash or cultivation

o clients; rather, its in the home-based business ownersability to stay ocused and motivated every single day.

I youve ever taken a day or two o rom an ofce job

to get caught up working at home, at frst the benefts

seem great: no co-workers stopping by to chat, no

mindless meetings to be called into, no phones ringing

every time you start a train o thought. The silence is

    wonderul!

But then reality sets in. One o the most requently asked

questions I hear at small business building events is,

How do I stay motivated when theres no one looking

    over my shoulder?

For starters, being a ocused, sel-motivator is perhaps

the single overriding characteristic you must have to

make it as a home-based business owner. I you dont ft

that profle, youll want to seriously reconsider i a solo

gig is or you. I you do have the sel-motivating gene,

give yoursel a boost with these proven practices:

Set work hours and break times

Establish specifc ofce hours and stick to them.

Establishing a routine will help you change gears rom

your home environment to your work environment.Even i pick up the kids rom school at 3:00 is part

o your routine, block out the time on your calendar so

you always have a clear idea o how your days are flled.

Make a time-management schedule for yourself

    every day

I you have certain quotas or projects to be met on a

daily basis, mark them out in an hourly breakdown, i

necessary. Check the items o your list as you complete

them. This creates a path o sel-accountability and will

help you better manager your time. Take this approach

one step urther and sketch out goals and objectives orthe month, the quarter and the year. Not only will you

stay ocused, youll have a written playbook that will

help you assess i youre on track with your business.

    Eliminate distractions

While its ideal to have a specifc dedicated work space

or your home ofce, such as an extra bedroom, by

necessity, some home-based businesses start in a garage

or on a kitchen table. Regardless o your workspace,

try to eliminate distractions that could keep you rom

your work: a blaring television set, a constantly ringing

home phone, interruptions by other members o

    household, etc.

Set boundaries for yourself and for othersHome-based business owners continually stru

with the quest or legitimacy. Regardless o how

or successul you become, there will always

riend, neighbor or relative who eels they can sto

whenever they like or a visit because youre ho

Set frm boundaries right rom the start. Its nice t

you, but Im araid Im on the clock until 5:30 p.m.

    I call you then?

What if you just cant focus?

Some days, the magic just isnt there. I youre havin

o day, dont blow o your business entirely, just

a dierent path or the aternoon. Organize your

review your business plan, go online and read a

the latest trends in your feld. Its fne to switch g

to blow o the cobwebs once in awhile, but don

    yoursel get too ar afeld.

    Give yourself a pep talk

We all have those days where work eels tedious

its tempting to play hooky. I you eel your mo

Im a big proponent o Social Media. Im a Twitter-

holic, on Facebook and LinkedIn. Ive been at VYP

and had people approach me (more than once) and

say Im ollowing you on Twitter! The ice is broken

and were already riends since we know a bit about

each other and probably remember the conversations.People are using Social Media more and more, so

doesnt it make sense to be on it? (BTW, ollow at

VegasYP on Twitter or all the VYP updates and where

    were going to meet next.)

However, i youre social media savvy, it doesnt stop

there. Connecting online is not a substitute or ace-

to-ace networking. Social media can help you build a

oundation, but you still need to get out there and put

    a ace with a name.

Getting out to network is tough to do, especially when

were all working more hours or the same dollar.

Finding the time to get out and have a social lie isnt

easy either, when you get caught up in work. Vegas

Young Proessionals chooses trendy venues or Fusion

Mixers, which allows you to network and have un in

    a great atmosphere.

It makes me laugh when I hear the misconception

that VYP is only or socializing. Business networking

is about meeting and getting to know people.

Networking isnt how many business cards you can

pass out (weve all seen these people!). I reer business

to people I eel will do a good job or my reerra

youre going to networking events with the prim

goal o selling your services to the people there,

might be a bit disappointed. Networking is a

getting to know the people you meet and earning

trust and riendship. I keep in touch regularly riends Ive met out networking, riends that will

to others about me when they go to an event I c

    make.

What can you expect rom Vegas Young Proession

Expect great venues, un people, smiling aces

yes, business contacts. Not to mention all o

    great proessional development programs we

to support your growth as a young proessional

show up, socialize, make a great impression by ge

to know people, and the business will come.

Im so grateul or the riends and business par

    Fredric Roberts

    Retired Investment Banker& Photographer

    City National rescued

my retirement. After my previous bank lost an enormouspercentage of my retirement money,

a close friend suggested that I meet with

the people at City National Bank. So,

I went to speak to their wealth management

team. They gave me incredibly detailed and

focused answers to my questions. I was enormously

impressed, and I knew immediately that

I had come to the right place.

The value of City Nationals wealth manage-

ment services is that they give me the where-

withal to go off and do what I really love,

    which is photography.

City National is The way upfor me.
