Gospel — As Jesus has loved us, so we must love one another (John 13:31-33a, 34-35). TRUE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY Can you imagine a world such as the one put before us in today’s scripture readings? Communi-ties of believers everywhere would support and encourage one another and be identified as Chris-tians by the way they love each other. It would be a world with no tears, no death and mourning, no crying out in pain. “Behold, I make all things new,” we hear the Son of God say in the second reading from the book of Revelation (21:5). Is this world of John’s vision only imaginary? Are these faithful followers for whom Jesus prayed only a savior’s dream? Today they are put before us as a worthy goal. How much closer can we come to this vision of a true Christian community in our lives today? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on MAY 7/8.
House Blessings Parishioners may request a house blessing by contacting the parish office, 702-459-7778. You will be contacted by Deacon John or Deacon Dan.

Fifth Sunday of Easter - April 24, 2016 Fifth Sunday of Easter - April 24, 2016
This weekend, we continue to celebrate the “Easter” Sacraments (the Sacraments of Initiation) at Holy Spirit; these are Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist. At the Easter Vigil on Saturday (before Easter), March 26, we had 13 adults and children receive FULL INITIATION, that is, all three Sacraments of Initiation. On the following Sunday, April 3, we had 9 adults become Catholic (having been baptized in another Christian religion) by receiving the two Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist.
Over the last two weekends, we had 92 children receive Eucharist for the first time. And, this weekend, at the 5:00 p. m. Mass, 115 teens and adults will be confirmed by Bishop Joseph Pepe. And, finally, next weekend, at the 10:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, May 1, there will be 11 middle school children receiving their First Eucharist. So, that’s 240 individuals receiving at least one of these Initiation Sacraments! Congratulations to all! Of course, we continue to celebrate infant and younger children’s baptisms throughout the whole year — usually two weekends a month. A reminder about general church, diocesan and parish policies vis-à-vis the Initiation Sacraments: • Infants and children under 6 years old can be baptized at any time of
the year. The preference is that these Baptisms take place on Sunday during Mass; it is recommended that Baptisms do not take place during the season of Lent. At Holy Spirit, we require one preparation class for the parents of the child to be baptized — offered once a month.
• For those who have been baptized as infants or under 6 years old, the time for First Eucharist is described as “the age of reason”, that is, when they are old enough to receive instructions; this is generally decided to be at age 7 — usually in the child’s second grade of elementary school. At Holy Spirit, we require a two-year preparation program —starting no earlier than first grade.
• For those who have been baptized as infants or under 6 years old and who have received First Eucharist in second grade or older, the time for Confirmation is at a time to be determined by the Diocese or parish. The Diocese of Las Vegas sets the second year of high school as the appropriate time for Confirmation — following a two-year preparation program.
• For children 7 years and older, for teens and for adults who have never been baptized, the appropriate preparation is participation in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA); these persons receive all three Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil (Saturday night before Easter).
• For children 7 years and older, for teens and for adults who have been baptized, but have not received First Eucharist or Confirmation, there are special programs set up to prepare them to receive one of both of those Sacraments.
Although these programs are for sacramental preparation, we have Religious Formation for children from age three through high school — even if they have already received these sacraments. Religious Formation should be part of children’s and teens life every year of their elementary, middle and high school time. During the month of May, we have some wonderful events to celebrate: Bunko Night, Parish Picnic and Cabaret Night. See column → NOTE: There will NOT be a Mass at the Picnic at Lee Canyon. By mistake, I put that there would be — in last week’s bulletin. Since this picnic is set on the Saturday of Pentecost weekend, our Feast Day, I want our parishioners to have a full celebration of the Holy Spirit and Pentecost at our regularly–scheduled Masses.
Saturday, May 7th– Bunko Night #2 To be held at 6:30 PM in the Gorman Cafeteria—Come and join the fun while raising money for our June mission trip to Jamaica. $20 per person. I am a volunteer for "The Catechesis of The Good Shepherd" at Holy Spirit. This Montessori program for our children ages 3 - 5 years old is a wonderful, spiri-tual, faith giving foundation for each child to carry in their heart's forever. During this 1 1/2 hour class, the children learn about Jesus Our Lord. They bless them-selves, sit in a circle to begin class and are taught the various bible stories and parables that Jesus taught over 2000 years ago. The children work with man- made wood temples, altars, puzzles and houses and caves. They use their imaginations re-enacting "The Angel Gabriel appearing before Mary, and Mary say-ing "Yes" to God", The "The Annunciation", Mary & Elizabeth, "The Birth of Jesus Christ", Bethlehem, Je-sus in the Temple with the prophets, "The Mustard Seed", "The Grain of Wheat", " The Precious Pearl" and so many more parables. The children also work with the maps and are introduced to the history of Israel. They learn about The Pascal Candle, the altar, chalice, paten, ciborium, candles, linen on the altar, and through song and presentations the different colors of the chasubles that the priest wears. From Ash Wednesday through Easter Sunday, they learn about the 40 days of Lent, Holy Thursday "The Last Supper", "Good Friday" and The Risen Jesus on Easter Sunday. Mostly they learn that Jesus loves them uncondition-ally. They learn how to pray and thank Jesus for all their blessings. One of the beautiful songs that they sing together is, "Jesus is the one who always loves me, never would I have to be afraid. W h e n I f e e l s c a r e d , sad or lonely, all I have to do is pray.” They learn that each of them are called by name, that Jesus is the Light of the World and they are going to let it shine. "Alleluia," they all love this word and love singing this song. We invite your 3-5 year old to join us next year. Jesus said "Come Follow Me"...

NEW BEGINNINGS
A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation
New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have
experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails.
• HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination - Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ’s saving death and resurrection.
Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick 702-459-7778
• HEALING Grief Facilitation - “Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled” (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram 702-459-7778 Next meeting: April 26
• CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - “If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member” (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ’s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support.
