Class 1 Incapable of causing injury during normal operation (Almost the same as ANSI class 1)

Class 1M Incapable of injury unless collecting optics are used (Currently included in class 1 under ANSI)

Class 2 Visible lasers incapable of causing injury in 0.25 s. (Same as ANSI class 2)

Class 2M Visible lasers incapable of causing injury in 0.25 s unless collecting optics are used (ANSI visible 3a with expanded or diverging

beam)Class 3R Marginally unsafe for intrabeam viewing; up to 5 times the

class 2 limit for visible lasers or 5 times the class 1 limit for invisible lasers

(ANSI visible 3a with small beam & ANSI invisible 3a)

Class 3B Eye hazard for intrabeam viewing (Same as ANSI class 3b)

Class 4 Eye and skin hazard for both direct and scattered exposure (Same as ANSI class 4)

Concepts to Work By!

• Researchers do interesting things!

• What is our role in safety?

Page 5: Laser Safety Training

Training Materials Available• Video

– Laser Safety Primer by LPI (~$350)– Covers the basics– Nicely done

• Power Point– Laser Institute of America– Laser Safety for Student (LPI) – Free– Laser Safety Microcourse (LPI) – Free– Other Institutions – Probably Free– Other Laser Safety Officers – Free

• Computer Based Training– Developed by LLNL and UC

• Used by DOE• Available to the UC campuses• Now available to the CSU campuses through SJSU & CSU East Bay• What about other campuses?

Computer Based Training

• LLNL (Hazards Control Dept) & UC system developed a computer based training for laser safety.

• Available to the UC system with permission from LLNL.

• NOW available to the CSU system on a SJSU server.

• Cost to the UC & CSU campuses – ZERO• Do other campuses need this level of training?

Page 7: Laser Safety Training

Training Process

• Learner logs onto the sever.• Enter a six digit (control) number to identify

themselves.• Complete the modules.• Take a final examination.• Receive a computerized form stating they have

completed the course and exam.• Submit the form to the LSO.• Training is now completed.
