SPRING 20128

President’s NotesTRACY USHER

As we head into the 2012 racing sea-son we find ourselves in interestingtimes. On the positive side, we onceagain have a great schedule set up forthe year with major events in somegreat places (events such as the NorthAmerican Championship in theColumbia River Gorge, one of the mostbeautiful places to sail in the world, and the U.S. Nationals raced on thefamous waters of Galveston Bay nearHouston.) Also, North America is set tosend four great sailors to the Olympicsthis summer and the Standard andRadial are set to remain Olympicequipment in the 2016 Olympics.

On the other hand, we continue into2012 with the issues between thebuilders and design rights holder stillunresolved and, sadly, resolution notyet looming on the horizon. As every-one surely knows well by now, severalyears ago Bruce Kirby sold BruceKirby, Inc., which maintained licenseagreements (see the Fundamental Rule)with all the builders, to another compa-ny known as Global Sailing. At somepoint after the sale, Global Sailing ter-minated the agreement withLaserPerformance Europe, beginningthe dispute which ultimately resulted inthe change to the Fundamental Rulesubmitted to, and passed by, the mem-bership this past year. During the vot-ing period it was also realized that per-mission from ISAF and ILCA wasrequired for the sale of Bruce Kirby,Inc., to Global Sailing and that it hadnot been requested, with the end resultof Bruce Kirby and Global Sailingagreeing that Bruce Kirby would re-assume his company. The current posi-tion of Bruce Kirby, Inc., is that the sit-uation has been restored to the way itwas before 2008 though it is not yetclear to everyone involved if thismeans the original agreement (withLaserPerformance Europe) was neverterminated or if it is necessary to havea new one. In the meantime the rulechange has not been formally approved

by ISAF. Discussions between ILCA,ISAF, Bruce Kirby andLaserPerformance continue, but the sit-uation remains complicated and, obvi-ously, unresolved. Still, there is signifi-cant effort being expended by all par-ties to resolve the situation… thoughthat effort has yet to coalesce around acommon plan. As they say, stay tuned!

In the meantime another bombshelllanded not only on the Laser Class, butalso on all organizations that have ben-efited from support fromLaserPerformance in the past:LaserPerformance has announced they

will no longer sponsor organizations orevents directly. This means that ILCA-NA no longer has a sponsorship agree-ment with LP (where they previouslysponsored the Grand Prix,) and that USSailing will no longer have either spon-sorship or charter boats for the USSailing Singlehanded Championshipsand other events. The biggest impact,of course, is on ILCA whereLaserPerformance will no longer besupplying charter boats for WorldChampionships in its territory. This hashad immediate impact on both the 4.7and Standard Youth Worlds inArgentina and the Men’s and Women’sWorlds in Germany. For Argentina theestimate was that some 80% of thesailors attending would require a char-ter boat and the only option to preventcancellation of the event was for ILCAto buy the boats, ship them to BuenosAires and directly handle the charters. For Germany the estimate is that about25% of the sailors would require acharter boat since many of the topsailors maintain boats in Europealready. In this case it was possible towork with the German Laser dealers tosupply 40 charter boats for thosesailors who would require one. But,importantly, the Men’s and Women’sWorlds will break with tradition andNOT be a supplied boat event this year.I believe the success of these events isdue to the availability of charter boatsand I am definitely concerned aboutthese developments as we go forward.

Normally, as the eternal optimist, I’dinsert in here a few lines to say the

good news is that we, the sailors, arebeing insulated from the above devel-opments. It is certainly true that ILCA-NA, by virtue of having established anice rainy day fund to help it weatherstorms like this, is able to continue toits work – coordinating with hosts toplan the major events and the GrandPrix, getting out the newsletter andplanning future events. And, of course, the District Secretaries continue towork hard to make sure we have ourlocal schedules, the fleets work hard toget their schedules sorted out, etc. Allof this IS good news, but... there arestill clouds on our horizon, with issues- like the difficulty in getting all thebuilders to agree to bring in the newStandard sail, or continue developmentof composite spars (to end forever thespar bending issue), to even obtainingclass legal equipment in a timely man-ner – directly impacting all of us. AsI’m typing this, the solution to theseproblems appears to be tied up in thesolution to the general dispute above. As I said above, a significant effort isbeing made to solve what is a far morecomplicated problem than one mightimagine and I hope that by the SummerIssue of The Laser Sailor there is posi-tive news to report.

So, as they say: “may you live in inter-esting times!” At this point I do seecause for optimism: many people whoare devoted to the Laser Class areworking very hard to get Laser sailingback on course. And one should alsoremember that the Laser Class itself islarge and resilient organization that hasweathered similar storms in the past.I’m quite confident we’ll weather thecurrent storm and, as in the past, emerge stronger than we were before.

Page 9: Lasersailorspring2012

www.Laser.org 9

Ok, now for some good news! Asmany know, there have also beenstaffing issues of late in the ILCA(international, not North America)office. In a nutshell, a key employee inthe organization was called back to hisfamily business and was forced to cutback to half time, or less, at ILCA. Inthe last decade the workload in theILCA office has grown tremendously, where they are now responsible fororganizing seven world championshipsper year, all major undertakings.Obviously, losing the full time servicesof such a key employee has createdsomething of a black hole. This pastfall the World Council undertook torestructure the office and search for asuitable replacement. The good news isthat this has now occurred and an offerhas been made to the lead candidate tobecome the new ILCA GeneralManager. I think this is going to be agreat move forward for ILCA andshould, by the end of this year, resolvethe issues that have recently plaguedthe ILCA office.

Finally, it is worth coming back to theschedule set for this upcoming sum-mer. As mentioned, the Laser NorthAmerican Championship will be heldthis summer in the Columbia RiverGorge, one of the most beautiful areasto sail in the world, and one blessedwith normally great breeze and warmdaytime temperatures. The ColumbiaRiver Gorge Association has set up agreat schedule for the week, with athree day clinic followed by the“Gorge Blowout” - a 20 mile down-wind race down the gorge in 25+ knotsof wind - and then the NorthAmericans. The US Championship willbe sailed out of the Houston YachtClub the first weekend in June, withthe Gulf Coast Championship at nearbyTexas Corinthian Yacht Club just twoweeks before. The CanadianChampionship is set for the EtobicokeYacht Club in Toronto the third week-end of June. For the Masters sailors, the Masters North AmericanChampionship will be in San Franciscothe last weekend of July (and, conve-

niently, the weekend after the NorthAmericans in the Gorge.) TheCanadian Masters follows one weeklater in Vancouver, BC, making forquite a nice Masters circuit! Finally, the US Masters will be hosted by theBrant Beach Yacht Club in mid-September which should provide, asalways, fantastic sailing! And, in addi-tion to these major events, there areregional, district and fleet level regattashappening all year near you. Be sure tocheck the calendar at www.laser.org tostart planning your season!

See you on the water!

SPRING 201210

EVAN LEWIS MSC. CSCS, CK

As my last two articles focused on nutrients that havedirect impacts on performance, this article focuses on nutritionfor performance and health. Inflammation occurs through sever-al complex cellular pathways that are activated in response todiet, injury and exercise. As a result, nutrition is directlyinvolved in the cause and management of inflammation through-out the body.

Inflammation is commonly associated with acuteinjuries, like a sprained ankle or a cut. This is easy to detect, asthe injured area becomes swollen, looks slightly red and is warmto the touch. These signs are evidence that the body is respond-ing at the cellular level by releasing chemical messengers calledcytokines that trigger a rush of immune cells to the affected areato promote healing and to defend against potential infection. Atthis time, blood flow is increased to deliver immune cells andnutrients to the affected area, while fluid collects in the area tohelp protect against further damage.

In certain chronic disease conditions such as cancer, diabetes, obesity and arthritis, the regulation of chemical mes-sengers becomes less controlled and they are continually pro-duced at low levels. This allows inflammatory messengers totravel throughout the body to increase immune system activityas opposed to being contained within one specific region. Theincreased activity of immune cells can lead to the mistaken tar-geting and breakdown of normal cells, which in turn causes therelease of more chemical messengers, creating an inflammatorycycle.

Athletes of all levels can experience a mix of bothacute and whole body inflammation. When muscle damageoccurs during training or competition, the body responds with anacute inflammatory response. In situations of chronic overtrain-ing and insufficient sleep, whole body inflammation can gradu-ally increase.

How does inflammation affect me as an athlete or non-ath-lete?

When the body is triggered to release pro-inflammato-ry chemical messengers, either from exercise, acute injury orfrom a disease, the stress hormone cortisol is also released. Thiscreates an environment that prevents muscle protein synthesisand can also cause muscle breakdown. For an athlete, this imme-diately increases the necessary time to recover from a trainingsession, while non-athletes are at the risk of losing skeletal mus-cle mass.

How can nutrition reduce inflammation?Nutrition plays a major role in managing both acute

and whole body inflammation. However, the current dietaryhabits of most North Americans contributes to an increase inwhole body inflammation. The increased intake of highlyprocessed foods that are loaded with saturated fats, sodium andrefined sugars disrupts the internal balance within the body.

With increased saturated fat intake and high body fatcontent, immune cells can mistake fat cells for cells that shouldbe destroyed. This process increases the release of pro-inflam-matory chemical messengers that contribute to whole bodyinflammation.

Fortunately there are foods that can be incorporatedinto your diet that have strong anti-inflammatory properties. Iam going to discuss five key foods that have above averageinflammation fighting properties.

Omega-3 fatsMany people have been told to increase their consumption of omega-3 and omega-6 fats because they are healthy. While these fats are bet-ter than saturated fats, the omegas were not created equally. Omega-6s are a key component of inflammatory messengers, while in com-parison omega-3 is highly anti-inflammatory. Omega-3s prevent theactions and release of pro-inflammatory chemical messengers andreduces the activity of pro-inflammatory genes. Omega-3 fats can befound in fatty fish (e.g. salmon, tuna, cat fish), olive oil and flaxseeds.

BroccoliBroccoli consumption can decrease inflammation in two differentways. First, dietary fibre in broccoli helps to trap and speed up theremoval of fat from the digestive track. This is especially importantfor the removal of saturated fats. Secondly, the digestion of broccoliprovides important nutrients to support the bacteria in the digestivetrack. These bacteria help to remove pro-inflammatory toxins fromthe body and protect the intestines from damage.

BlueberryBlueberries are primarily known for their antioxidant properties fromthe compound anthocyanin in their skin. This compound reduces dam-age to cell structures and DNA, which reduces the activation ofimmune cells for the removal of damaged or non-functioning cellsaround the body.

PapayaPapaya is a tropical fruit that is packed with vitamins, minerals andcompounds that assist in digestion. Additionally, papayas containflavonoids, a compound that has strong anti-inflammatory properties.Flavonoids have been shown to decrease inflammatory messengersand immune cell activity.

Green teaGreen tea has been consumed in Eastern cultures for centuries andanecdotally linked to good health. Modern research has determinedthe polyphenols contained within the leaves have strong anti-inflam-matory and antioxidant properties. When green tea is regularly con-sumed as tea or powder, this powerful food can lower the circulatinglevels of several whole body inflammatory messengers.

It is clear that nutrition can play a significant role in manag-ing inflammation for athletes and non-athletes alike. The regular con-sumption of omega-3 fats, vegetables and fruits will help your bodyproperly manage inflammation, which will improve overall health andaccelerate recovery from training.

District 11 has a new perpetualtrophy to honor the Laser RadialDistrict 11 Champions. It wasbuilt around the originalStandard Laser District 11Championship trophy and fea-tures the names of the 7 champi-ons we’ve had so far.

The original Standard LaserDistrict 11 Championship trophywas built in 1979 by MikeWaters using a relief of a Lasercreated by his wife, Jane Waters.Over the years this trophy waslost to time and in the mid-1990′s a new Standard LaserDistrict 11 Championship trophywas created. The original trophywas found about 5 years ago andthe champions listed on it wereused to populate the new trophygoing back to 1972.

The original trophy was given tome when I became DistrictSecretary and I thought it was ashame not to put such a nicepiece of art to use and to loose avaluable contribution to ourDistrict. We’ve started to have aconsistent showing of Radials atour District Championship. Ithought – why not recognizeLaser Radial champions andgive Radials a trophy to sail for.

The new Laser Radial District11 trophy was designed to usethe relief in the original trophy.Since Mike was a boat builderand used the best boat-buildingadhesives to affix the relief tothe original board, it would havebeen too difficult to separate therelief from the board withoutbreaking it. So the new trophyhad to be built around it.The new trophy would featurethe relief in the center, a plaque

with the name of the trophy atthe top, room for the 7 knownLaser Radial District 11Champions and room for thenext 36.

SPRING 201216

The 2012 Laser World Masters’Championship was sailed on the watersof Moreton Bay in Brisbane, Australia, and hosted by the Royal QueenslandYacht Squadron. For all the years thatMaster sailors have asked for a warmand semi-tropical environment thenthis was it. The air was warm, thewater was warm, there were occasionalrain squalls but mostly it was sunny. The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadronhas a huge facility with a giant lawnwhich was used for the boat park withthe large patio bar conveniently locatedjust at the edge. A good fraction of thecompetitors stayed in the accommoda-tions located, literally outside the frontdoor of the squadron and it was a shortwalk to downtown Manly - so all of usright-siders didn’t need to worry abouthow to drive on the other side of theroad.

Twenty competitors from NorthAmerica, eight from Canada andtwelve from the US, made the tripdown under. A lot of the hard corewere there, for example PeterSeidenberg maintained his unbrokenstreak of 30 consecutive years of atten-dance at Master Worlds, dating all theway back to the second event! In addi-tion to Peter, other US sailors includedSteve Avery, Halsey Bullen, DavidHartman, Jacques Kerrest, BruceMartinson, Mike Matan, Ryan Minth,Michael OBrien, Doug Peckover andTracy and Christy Usher. Canada wasrepresented by Al Clark, David Elliott,Bill Mulloy, Rob Muru, Phil Paxton,Stephen and Lesley Reichenfeld andThomas Stubbs.

The RQYS hosted the AustralianMaster Nationals immediately beforethe Master Worlds to use as a feederevent and an opportunity for sailors toget used to the local conditions. Asthese things go, it turned out to be acompletely different event in that apassing front meant strong breeze andrain for that event. The Master Worldssaw more “standard” conditions forthat time of year, but even here theconditions at the beginning of the event

were not quite the same as the end ofthe event. The first three days sawsunny days and winds mostly in the12-15 range, peaking slightly higher bythe end of the day. The last three dayssaw lots more cloud cover and breezemostly in the 5-8 knot range.Thursday’s racing was lost completelydue to shifting and unstable wind.

In customary fashion, the 233 sailorswere almost evenly split betweenRadial and Standard rigs, but with ahealthy number of 17 sailors opting tosail in the newly established 4.7 Class. The RQYS set up to run two trape-zoids, with the Radials (4 fleets) racingon the south course and the Standards(3 fleets) and 4.7s racing on the northcourse. Both PRO’s were models ofefficiency with races starting exactlyon time each day and the second racesfollowing very quickly after the firstrace. With both races clocking in atabout an hour each this meant we werespending less than 4 hours total a dayon the water -leaving muchmore time forthe all importanttall tale telling atthe bar after rac-ing!

The MasterWorlds is not aneasy regatta. There are 12races over 6days (with a dayoff in between)and, importantly2 discards. Thegoal at thebeginning is toget off to astrong start, or atleast not sailyour discardsearly in theevent. In the lat-ter half of theevent the 2 dis-cards becomeincreasingly

important - those in control can affordto have bad races (in particular at theexpense of those just behind them),those still in the hunt needing not onlyto sail well but also needing a fortu-itous alignment of planets or somethingto help sort out the points. And, ofcourse, with only two races per dayyou get plenty of time to think aboutall of this. The combination of numberof days, number of races and numberof discards make this the most uniqueof all Masters events!

The racing in all the fleets was toughand North American sailors fared wellin those fleets they were sailing in.Peter Seidenberg suffered some setbacks early in the regatta but thenstaged a nice comeback to challengeKeith Wilkins for second overall, ulti-mately missing by just one point in theGreat Grandmaster division. TheRadial Grandmasters saw a very com-petitive fleet race with the outcome notdetermined until the end and Doug

Peckover finishing finishing third anda late charging Bruce Martinson mov-ing up to fifth. In the Radial MastersAl Clark, despite being saddled with aDNE in the first race, went on to sail aconsistent top four finish (including 3firsts) regatta to end sixth overall. Onthe Standard/4.7 course, Mike Mataanalso sailed a consistent regatta, includ-ing a first in race 10, to finish fifthoverall in the Standard Masters - typi-cally the most competitive of all thefleets. Finally, in his debut as aGrandmaster, Tracy Usher mounted alate charge but ultimately fell short tofinish second in the StandardGrandmasters.

In what is perhaps a trend, the rumor isthat the 2013 Master Worlds will besailed in Oman, certainly fitting thebill as another warm weather MasterWorlds! Dates are not yet set but thescuttlebutt has the event somewherenear the end of 2013. Start your train-ing now!

District 6Vancouver, British ColombiaAndy Hunt

Greetings to all District 6 sailors.

With the exception of sailors in the Surrey SailingClub, activities in District 6 have be rather slow inthe past few months. The Surrey Sailing Club hosts a Frostbite Seriesduring the winter months. Four members competedin the Frostbite Series and after 10 races, DougHoney was in first place, Darren Redies was is insecond place, Mark Fitzsimmons was in third placeand Mike Trevorrow was in fourth place. Now thatthe weather has started to improve and clubs arebeginning to get more active, I imagine that moreand more sailors will start de-winterizing their boatsand get out on the water.

Two District 6 clubs hosted regattas during the win-ter and spring months. The Royal Victoria YachtClub hosted the Frozen Assets Regatta on February3 and 4 and the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club hostedthe March Madness Regatta on March 10 and 11.The Frozen Assets Regatta has a very low turnout ofLasers (6) and Laser Radials (1). Part of the prob-lem was that the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle(District 22) also had a regatta (Frigid Digit) on thesame weekend. The Frigid Digit goes back manyyears and was part of the old District 6 FrostbiteSeries. Winds for the FA were moderate both days. All of the sailors were local sailors. Full results canbe found on the District 6 website(www.district6x.ca). The March Madness Regattahad 10 Lasers and 8 Laser Radials. All of thesailors came from the lower mainland. Easterlywinds of between 7 and 12 knots prevailed onSaturday while a gusty southerly wind (9-18) madea few sailors show the shiny side up. The resultsthat are posted on the RVANYC website(www.royalvan.com) are incomplete and I will tryand get them updated as soon as possible. Some of the local (Vancouver) District 6 sailorshave been competing in major North American(Rolex Miami OCR and Mid Winters East) regattas. In the Miami OCR, Isabella Bertold was 23rd. in theLaser Radials while Rebecca Power was 58th. Inthe Laser Gold Fleet, Alexander Heinzemann was32nd. In the Laser Silver Fleet, RicardoMontemayor was 39th. and Kyle Martin was 50th.All positions are for the overall placings. In the MidWinters East Regatta, Richardo Montemayor was7th. overall. Kyle Martin was 16th. and DominicFritz was 43rd. In the Laser Radial Gold Fleet,Natalia Montemayor was 33rd. and Rebecca Powerwas 40th. In the Silver Fleet, Graham Harney was12th., Alexander Kroitzch was 19th, Alexander Fritzwas 22nd and Ellie Shaw Unger was 24th. Thehead coach of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club’sRace Team, Al Clark, is competing in the LaserMaster Worlds where he finished 6th. in the RadialMasters Division. For upcoming events, please check the District 6website (www.district6x.ca)

Happy Spring Laser sailors! We’ve enjoyed ourextended fall this year - yes not much ice thiswinter at all, so its been great for wintersailing. To say “Frostbiting” would be mislead-ing!

The crew of Marianne Nash, Eric Johnson,Lindsay Hewitt and David Trinder up atSeawanhaka Yacht Club have done an excep-tional job running their winter series. A HUGETHANKS!!!! Also a “shout out” to LindsayHewitt for sharing his special coaching onSundays. He’s been making himself availableon a regular basis. Anyone who shows up earlyor wants to stay for a recap after sailing is wel-come to Participate at the Junior Club. There isstill another month of sailing ahead so pull yourboats out and get out and race!

Lindsay Hewitt

As of the date of this article, The top five quali-fiers for the Spring Series are Fred Abels in thelead, followed closely by Geoff Loffredo, MattLyons, David Trinder, and Webmaster guruRobert Terry in fifth. Great to note that SayvilleYacht Club’s junior sailor Kia Olsson is the topfemale sailor, and she was the top sailor of theday on 3-4-12! Congratulations to all 29 sailorsthat have participated so far in the Springseries!

Seawanhaka hosted their annual “Hair ofthe Dog” New Years day regatta. Accordingto Wikipedia, “Hair of the dog” is a colloquialexpression in the English language predomi-nantly used to refer to alcohol that is consumedwith the aim of lessening the effects of a hang-over. The expression originally referred to amethod of treatment of a rabid dog bite by plac-ing hair from the dog in the bite wound. Theuse of the phrase as a metaphor for a hang-over treatment dates back to the time of WilliamShakespeare.

Eight sailors participated in the six race serieswith Eric Johnson getting the win, followedclosely by Geoff Loffredo and Kia Olsson.

Eric Johnson

The Seawanhaka fall Laser series hosted 36sailors in all over a 10 week period. Top honorswent to Fred Abels, followed by Eric Johnson,Geoff Loffredo, Dave Trinder and Robert Terry.Looks like Fred is the man to beat this year outof D-8... Glad to see he is sailing so well!

Hi all! As I’m writing this, we here in Minnesotaare excited and a little confused that spring isalready here. But hey, we will take it! The lakesare melting, and lasers are starting to replace iceboats. We have a bunch of regattas coming up thisyear. Our first regatta is a one-day fun-day Regattacalled the Heckl Memorial on May 12th. JohnWeiss always organizes a great regatta. MaybeMartin will throw another great party afterwards(Hint Hint!). The Aquatennial will be held July 21stand 22nd. It is a great two-day regatta on LakeCalhoun right in Minneapolis. The scenery aroundthe lake can be just as good as the sailing. InAugust, Duluth will be holding another two-dayregatta, quite possibly our Grand Prix Regatta. BillReed always does a great job hosing and housingthe sailors that need a place to stay. There are afew more regattas in the works, so please check usout on facebook or our website, details below. Wehope to have another great season of laser racing.Of course, we hope to make it to a few D20 eventsthis year. Maybe even down to KC! Please comejoin us this year for some fun in the sun.http://d21.laserforum.org/http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/372915717805/

Frigid Digit

In February, Frigid Digit 2012 was one for theages. Frigid? Well, temps in the 60s and bright sun-shine ruled both days. The problem for many wasthey didn’t get enough sunscreen on. Wind? While itwasn’t enough for most of us to get into the strapsuntil the last couple of races, but enough to get in 11competitive races in over two days. Food? YunMcFall topped her jaw-dropping efforts of last year. The homey gathering at Kelly’s house built on lastyear and confirmed that personal connections are abig part of this event, and Laser sailing.

The sailing itself was great. 20 standard rigs wereentered. PRO Dennis Clark reeled races off likeclockwork, aided all weekend by Jim Johnston and

Randy Shuman. All windward-leeward sounds bor-ing, but there were plenty of shifts and surprises thatkept everyone engaged. Young David Brink had itdialed in on Saturday, but on Sunday MichaelO’Brien’s consistency eventually prevailed. Sundaythere was a shore delay, but to many people’s sur-prise a great northerly rolled in around 12:15. Brinkfinished second overall, Bob Britten third, PeterWoytkowiak fourth, and John Purdy of Portlandfifth.

The six-boat Radial fleet was closely fought withLex Aird followed by Sarah Mackey, two of SYC’srising stars. As officers in the SYC program, they’replanning on helping get more SYC Radial andLasers sailors involved in SLF racing.

The fleet was joined late Saturday by a pod of orcas. We did a quick head count of competitors afterwardto make sure there were no EBOs (eaten by orcas).

In mid-March we concluded a very successfulSeattle Laser Fleet Frostbite Series. There have been20+ boats for the events, and with our buddies in theTasar fleet we’ve topped 30 several times.

In 2012 we’re sailing again from Shilshole BayMarina with Corinthian YC on Thursdays. In coop-eration with Sail Sand Point and the University ofWashington YC, we’re initiating casual Friday nightracing on Lake Washington. It promises to be agreat year for Lasers in Seattle!

Northwest Laser sailors are slowly emerging fromtheir winter slumber in anticipation of a very bigseason ahead, including the 2012 Laser NorthAmericans coming to the Columbia River Gorge inJuly. In Portland, the fleet is racing at WillametteSailing Club on Sunday afternoons (moves toMonday evenings April 16) and enjoying thevagaries of springtime in Oregon, everything from0-25 knots, sideways rain to sunshine (they say itbuilds character). WSC has just launched a newmiddle school Laser sailing program, putting 10kids on the river three days a week in the club’sradial rigs. The pipeline to the 2024 Olympics startshere! Our summer regatta season kicks off May 26-27with Eugene Yacht Club’s Memorial Day Regatta, followed the next weekend by the 43rd AnnualVancouver Lake Sailing Club Regatta in Vancouver,WA. The action moves out to the Gorge in July, beginning with the Columbia Gorge RacingAssociation’s annual WIND Youth Laser Clinic(July 10-12) and Regatta (July 14-15). Celebritycoach Javier “Rulo” Borojovich, co-founder of theCabarete Laser Training Center and mentor to thestars (Anna Tunnicliffe, Andrew Campbell, et al) iscoming out to head the WIND coaching staff. Rulowill stick around to lead the adults through theirpaces in the popular Gorge Laser PerformanceClinic which follows on July 14-16. Then on July 17it’s the Laser Gorge Blowout, the infamous 18-milesprint from Cascade Locks to Hood River, and one

last chance to polish up your downwind chopsbefore the season’s climatic event, the 2012 LaserNorth American Championship, July 19-22.Regatta co-chairs Jarvis Brecker and MarilynHodson and PRO Mark Townsend promise an eventto remember, with lots of races, warm sunshine, cold beverages, fabulous food, and of course thefamous Gorge westerlies. Charters can be arrangedthrough West Coast Sailing (westcoastsailing.net). Ifyou’re not going to Weymouth this summer, youshould be coming to the Gorge! To find out more, register for all events, and get acopy of the spectacular new 2012 Gorge Sailing cal-endar, visit CGRA on the Web atwww.cgra.org.

D22 Montana looks forward to spring and meltingand clear blue water and breeze! Our snowpack isup in the high country, but it’s been very dry intown. It’s been a surprisingly so-so ski season, evenwith the snow numbers up. It’s mid-March andtemps have hit mid-50s in Missoula and into the 70sin Billings.

In the eastern part of the state, the Billings youthLaser program will again be in full swing for the2012 season. We’ll meet every Saturday from 9 tonoon, with one hour in the classroom and two hourson the water, sailing on Lake Elmo. There are sevenLasers available for the program this year, with ananticipated class size of ten to fifteen. We’ll alsohold races every Thursday evening on Lake Elmo.At last count there were ten Lasers in the Billingsarea. Hopefully we’ll see most of them on the start-ing line each Thursday. There are no special races orregattas planned for our Billings fleet other than theroad trip to Flathead Lake for the DistrictChampionship in August.

The District 22 Championship and Flathead LaserChampionship will be held in August at the northend of beautiful Flathead Lake, within sight ofGlacier National Park. Sturdy early thermals, sea-sonal breeze, and a spectacular setting should makeit an enjoyable event. A 4.7 class will be includedin this year’s event. The event will be generouslyhosted by the North Flathead YC in Somers, MT.

SPRING 201224

Camping is available on site, or lodging in the nearby resort towns of Bigfork and Lakeside,as well as the City of Kalispell.

We are planning the Whitefish Lake Regatta for July 14-15. Whitefish is located near thebase of Big Mountain ski resort in NW Montana. Races are held right off the City beachwith a post-race brunch and fun a block up the hill at a home overlooking the water. Lastyear we ran short-course racing with some races only 12 minute long…it’s all about starting! There were starts with the whole fleet over the line! We had a nice group of Albertans join-ing us last year and we welcome them all back.

There is some idle talk of reviving the Ski-Yotting concept here in the spring, with ski racesheld at Big Mountain and sailing on Whitefish Lake. Not great skiing that late, and notmany Yots on the water that early.

District 24NorCalNick Burke

Laser racing is year round in District 24. The weather was particularly good this winter, partof a pattern of unusually low rainfall.

RYC offered racing every Sunday from Dec to March. The first Sunday of the month was thesmall boat midwinters, with many other classes on multiple courses. The other Sundays wereshort course racing run by the junior program, and open to advanced juniors and adults. Forthe small boat mids event, there were 28 standard rigs and 26 radials registered. DrakeJensen was run-away winner in the standards, with a closely fought battle between RogerHerbst and Emilio Castelli for 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Mike Bishop took 4th show-ing good consistency. In the radials, the winner was Markus Suorsa. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th wereSarah Lake, Marina Fennell and Emma Drejes respectively.

There was also a monthly Laser series in Santa Cruz. They replace the two-turns penalty witha one-turn penalty during these races. They had 11 registrants in total for the February event.Roger Herbst came in at the top of the standard rigs and Wilson Fletcher won the radials.

Thanks to David LaPier for his service as district secretary. He has resigned. Nick Burke isthe new district secretary. There was an open nomination and election process in which noone else ran.

District 24 sailors are looking forward to a typically busy summer. The Masters NorthAmericans will be an addition to the usual packed local schedule. Weeknight short courseracing will start soon on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. We’re looking fora Tuesday night venue :-) D24 sailors are also planning on visiting our neighbors in district 6for the North Americans and district 25 for the PCCs.

MARTINE R ZURINSKAS

It was a great end to an awe-some winter series at Lake LanierSailing Club. 23 lasers came out incold temp to brave the high windforecast. Day one 4 long competi-tive races with a tight race at theleader board. Day two gave us 20gusting to over 30 by the end of thelast race. We only had one race asthe RC Barge could not holdanchor with the high chop andbreeze. We all braved the condi-tions for a great weekend! Manyfolks sacrificed scores on Sundayto sail and dropped their full to aradial just to say we did it! Over allwinner Travis Maier from LLSC.Top Radial - Robert Burke LLSC.Here are some comments from theyoungest in the Laser fleet, KellyMilliken from Lake Norman YachtClub - “I sailed at the LaserSoutherns at Lake Lanier, Ga forthe first time this year. Eventhough it is a lake, they had somereally good wind! On Saturday thewinds were 10 - 15 and 23 lasersraced. On Sunday the winds were15-25 and some of the grown upsdidn’t even go out. I was proud ofmyself for being one of the eightlasers who finished the race onSunday. It is always good to bringthe smaller sail for back up,because you never know if youmight need it. In heavy wind the 4.7sail is perfect for those who are justover 100 pounds like me.” Note toall laser sailors - always bring youralternate rig - you never know whatwill happen to the forecast!
