Our Idea
-Implementation of technology into warfare in order to provide benefits to soldiers
Objective •To create a device that quickly and accurately scans
the area behind a soldier for potential threats
• To create a device that is affordable and simple enough that it can easily be distributed to all necessary armed personal in the military
• Reduce the chances of a soldier being caught off guard
Functionality
• Gather Infrared Readings
• Process Image to detect Threats
• Notify Soldier of possible Threats
Software Flow Chart• Gather Infrared Readings• Is above ambient
temperature?• Isolate high temperature
area• Determine if object is
human• Notify Soldier of possible
Threats
Technical Design
Thermal Imaging
• Detect Infrared Heat Sources
• Uncooled vs Cooled Devices
• Utilizing LWIR with SWIR to eliminate thermal crossover
Thermal Sensing Element
• LWIR with possible use of SWIR
• Thermal camera producing an analog video signal
• Needs to be durable, reliable, and accurate
• Possible Choices:– PICO640 LWIR with SU1024LDM– Thermopiles
Microprocessor
• Sufficient memory• Fast enough• Affordable• Simple to program• ATMega from AVR
Output Device
• Wireless headset• Secure communication
area around the soldier• FreeMotion 200 Wireless
headset
Principles
• Extensive research currently occurring in thermal imagining
• Image processing methods to find people in an image
• Human robot interaction falls within the scope of our project
Evaluation
• Speed and accuracy - no guarantee it will always detect a
threat• Ethical concerns (soldier dependency)
Future Possibilities
• Create everything ourselves• Add more sensors
