Copper River Fleece at Cabin Fever

BY CATRIN LOVETT, HOMER, $180.

JEWELRY ARTIST CATRIN LOVETT creates pendants, earrings and bracelets out of silver, fossil mammoth, jade, spiny oyster, fossil walrus, lapis and turquoise. Her work is well-known and well-re-ceived in Alaska and widely available in Homer, Seward, Ketchikan and Anchorage.

Lovett’s work is thoughtful and completely Alaskan. Simple designs and use of complementary materials make her pieces fiercely powerful. The pendant was in the beautifully lit case and spoke of the past through a combination of animal characters and triangles which also creates a sense of place where the mountains meet the sea.

Lovett is deeply ensconced in Homer, as she and her husband also own Inua and the Roadhouse, two Homer Spit art galleries with original works of art, including her jewelry. Locally one can find her gorgeous pieces at The Lakefront’s Gift Shop or downtown at Elaine S. Baker & Associates in the Captain Cook Hotel. Prices range from $64 to $455.

Order Now for the Holidays!

While breaks from school should be fun, they don’t have to be breaks from learning. The down time of the holiday season is the

perfect time of year to keep kids entertained with books.

With the recent adoption of the Common Core State Standards, which set expectations for what students should be learning so they will be college and career ready, children of all ages will be expected to read more non-fiction.

“As a parent, you can play an important role in helping your children meet the Common Core State Standards while on break,” says Donna Elder, senior literacy specialist for the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL). “By using fiction and their interests as a springboard for informational reading, you can make this a fun experience.”

Elder is providing reading ideas to feed your children’s interests. It’s all about offering them books on subjects in which you already know they are interested:

• For example, if your child enjoyed “The Cricket in Times Square” by George Selden, you can help foster his or her interest in crickets with “Insectiopedia” by Douglas Florian, “Chirping Crickets” by Melvin Berger, or “Cricket”s by Cheryl Coughlan.

• After reading “The Snow Child: A Russian Folktale” retold by Freya Littledale, follow up by encouraging your child to read about the science of weather with “The Kids’ Book of Weather Forecasting” by Mark Breen and Kathleen Friestad or “Weather” by Seymour Simon.

• Teens who couldn’t put down “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins may be interested in learning more about the origins and history of real athletic competitions. Start with “The Olympics: A History of the Modern Games” by Allen Guttmann.” Or entertain a newfound interest in the outdoors with “The Ultimate Survival Manual” by Rich Johnson or a field guides to birds.

• Is your child interested in baseball? From historical accounts like “Baseball: A History of America’s Favorite Game” by George Vecsey to a book that explains how bats are made, such as “Good Wood: The Story of the Baseball Bat,” by Stuart Miller, you can help kids score an academic homerun.

• Inspire the inner chef in your children and test their ability to follow instructions with “Kids’ Fun and Healthy Cookbook,” by Nicola Graimes. Or opt for a picture-book biography like, “Bon Appetit! The Delicious Life of Julia Child” by Jessie Hartland.

Don’t let “educational” and “boring” mean the same thing in your household. By seeking out reading material that engages your children on their level on subjects that are meaningful to them, you can help them meet the Common Core State Standards, while having a very merry holiday season.

For more information on Common Core State Standards, see www.corestandards.org

Great ways to keep kids reading over the holidays

Find books that compliment classic children’s books, like The Snow Child: A Russian Folktale.

BY JESSICA BRUNSTING, EAGLE RIVER AND ANCHORAGE, $62.

FINE JEWELRY ARTIST JESSICA BRUNSTING grew up in Talkeetna and has lived in Eagle River for 25 years. She also owns and operates Houghton-Hill Jewelry and Home store here in Anchorage. She started selling her ear-rings in local stores over 10 years ago, and now her works are exclusively avail-able at her HoughtonHill shop. It’s located in a small strip on D Street that also

includes Second Run consignment store and Blush Boutique. HoughtonHill is nothing less than dazzling. It’s filled with wondrous and amazing good-

ies. Everything is sparkly and it’s like entering a museum where you can touch all the pieces! Brunsting, a delightful and friendly Alaskan, makes jewelry for her store using precious and semi-precious stones in very thoughtful settings that allow the color, cut and size of the stones to shine through.

The chalcedony earrings are beveled to catch the light in just the right way. The simple set-ting features her signature leverback clasp, which is quite helpful at this time of year when you’re taking your hats on and off–you won’t lose your earrings in the process! As a bonus about 90 percent of the jewelry she makes is one-of-a-kind, so you won’t see your earrings on everyone else.

Aside from earrings, there are also bracelets, necklaces and truly unique gifts for men and wome—candles, watches, cuff links, desk accessories, artwork and more. Visit the store at 720 D Street (770-1301). You can also visit them on the web at facebook.com/houghtonhill.

BY GEORGE OVERPECK, HOMER, $140.

GEORGE OVERPECK’S GORGEOUS WORKS of spalted wood make a thoughtful gift, created with love and special care. Overpeck calls himself a wood turner and commercial fisherman, but he is truly an artist of the finest caliber. He received a Rasmuson Individual Artist award in 2013; a cov-

eted nod to his creative gifts to Alaska’s art culture.Overpeck’s craft starts with him collecting wood from firewood piles,

clearings and felled trees from wind or heavy snows. In the summer he fishes, kitesurfs and snowkites. When fall and winter return, Overpeck takes to his studio and makes turned wood vessels. White birch seems to be his favorite medium, but he also works with Kenai birch, alders, black spruce and cot-tonwood.

The bowls speak for themselves and Overpeck truly lets these magnificent pieces tell him what they want to become. Is there such a thing as a wood whisperer?

His work is available locally at The Anchorage Museum Shop and on his website betulaturning.wordpress.com. Birch bowls start at $140.

BY LINDA LEARY, ANCHORAGE, $98.

FUNCTIONAL, COLORFUL AND COMFORTABLE sounds like the tri-fecta. Linda Leary, inspired by the adventures of fishing with her father, Leary learned the art of networking with fellow fisherman and enjoyed the bond that develops when engaging in a shared passion.

The leggings at FisheWear is exactly as described: clothing for women that allows them to be comfortable and confident in the outdoors, fits, functions and is fashion-able. Some are boldly-patterned, like the “Abstract Char” leggings. Reminiscent of a paint-ing by Picasso, the leggings are well-made, comfortable and come in XS and run through XXL, so they fit about any body type. They are made from a four-way stretch polyester/spandex blend which is durable and breathable, and they are quick dry, moisture-wicking and SPF +.

FisheWear also offers up other legging styles, jackets, hats, bags and neckwear. Prices range from $25 - $120, and the quality of the products makes this a value.

The website at FisheWear has a fun gallery of adventures, pictures, tips and advice and even some recipes that sound wonderful.

Visit FisheWear at their store at 511 W. 41st Ave., Suite 101, fishewear.com, 306-3097 or con-tact [email protected].

BY TIDAL VISION, JUNEAU, ALASKA, $47 - $89.

WITH A VISION TO CREATE QUALITY GOODS and an eye on sustainability, Tidal Vision is all about invent-ing practical solutions that are advantageous econom-ically, environmentally and socially. Their motto is

“from the ocean, for the ocean.”The Salmon Skin Wallets start with a proprietary aquatic tanning for-

mula wherein the people at Tidal Vision manufacture rolls of aquatic (salmon and other finfish) leather that can be used as a sustainable, practical, unique alternative for other leathers. Salmon leather resists stretching better than cow leather and has similar durability in a thin-ner material. Rest assured, there is no odor of the ocean or fish; it has the familiar fragrance of common leather.

Captain and Executive Officer Craig Kasberg heads up his team. He’s been involved in all aspects of the Alaskan seafood industry. Not only is he still a captain, he’s also Co-Chair of the Alaska Ocean Cluster Initiative which works to develop new seafood byproduct business col-laborations. Four other key members of Tidal Vision’s team are all creative and leaders in their fields whether it’s tanning, marketing, engineering or chemical science.

The Salmon Skin Wallets are well-made, attractive and come in a variety of colors, as the salmon leather can be dyed. The interior of the wallets are made with organic canvas for durability. Prices range from $47 - $89. They even offer a phone wallet.

Tidal Vision has stores in Cordova and Petersburg and their products are available online at store.tid-alvision.usa.com or facebook.com/TidalVisionUSA, or call 321-9121.
