Mrs. Shilling is the Best Teacher!

Have you met my amazing teacher? Her name is Mrs. Shilling! She has been a teacher at Clover Hill Elementary School for 25 years. She said It took her four years to become a teacher. She’s taught kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade. She became a teacher because she likes working with kids and likes to hear their stories. Mrs. Shilling said being a teacher is fun and takes a lot of planning. On the first day of school she played a balloon game with us. Her husband gave her 30 balloons and she decided to play the game she learned in a class over the summer. She said it would be a good way to get us working together. Her favorite subject is social studies. Her favorite sports are tennis and baseball. She has two kids: Katrina is 22 and Drew is 27. She has a lot of friends, but she has been friends with Mrs. Michaels for 26 years. Her favorite holiday is Christmas and her favorite flowers are roses. Mrs. Shilling’s favorite thing to do is teach, read, play tennis and walk her dog. Her favorite singers are Bruce Springsteen and Keith Urban. We asked her how she came up with the idea of the newspaper and she said her son Drew came up with the idea when they were at the beach. We love our teacher, Mrs. Shilling!

Our Classroom Writing about the classroom is fun because this is the coolest classroom ever! When we are at Morning Meeting we share things on the rocking chair. When we work hard your name can go on the board and then the next day you earn a link for the chain. We have a hat called The Magic Hat. It has stars on top of it that show the birthdays of everyone in the class. We have a voting box. A classmate can be voted by the class to be a star of the week. The rocking chair and the couch are cool places to sit. Three people can sit on our couch each week. We have kites that are hanging on the ceiling like they are really flying. This is a fun classroom to me. My friends like this classroom too! Alex Mccreight Ahmad Hussain

Christopher, Reid and Kaeden’s Favorite Memories

Christopher’s favorite memory was when he interviewed a safety. The safeties are in fourth grade and wear yellow belts. When they are outside they wear red belts. Their job is to make sure people are safe. They are nine and ten years old. Christopher hopes to be a safety when he is in fourth grade. Kaeden’s favorite memory was at school when he met Mrs. Shilling and Mrs. Dewey. Another favorite was when he met Miss McAllister. He said Mrs. Shilling was funny and Mrs. Chadwick and Mrs. Dewey can be very goofy. Kaeden said that they are generous teachers. He also said Mrs. Chadwick says things loud but sweetly. All the teachers like to see the students smile, and that was his favorite memory. Reid’s favorite memory was the first day of school. They drew faces on a piece of paper, and then they went to resource which is art. Next they read First Day Jitters and they went to recess. He is enjoying second grade.

All About Allexus Written by Alex and Ahmad Have you met our friend Allexus? Her favorite colors are red and pink. She is 17 and is in twelfth grade. She likes to shop, hang with close friends and talk on the phone. She likes chicken and her favorite place to eat is Olive Garden. In her family she has her mom, dad, two sisters and one brother. She leaves school at 1:45 on odd days and at 11:50 on even days. Allexus participates in DECA club, track and the FCCLA club. She is a good friend!

Nicole and Katie’s favorite things were making projects like Egypt-China Day. The rock critters were a big hit! Taylor, Abby and Cody had lots of fun with the project. It was

their favorite thing about second grade. It seemed that Destine loved the 25th anniversary of Clover Hill. Kaeden and everyone said that their favorite thing was being a

Field Day Written by Cody, Sarah and Halie Field Day was a blast! Boy oh boy. It was very hot on field day! Every year people like to spray themselves or other people with water bottles. There was cold water and popsicles. There was a song everyone knew, “Cha Cha Slide”, so everyone gathered around the DJ. We had 45 stations to do. We traveled with our partners. Lots of people wanted to do limbo and jump rope. Some of the stations, like juggling, were hard! Some of our parents helped and stayed for lunch. We ate lunch with our friends and our families. It’s almost the most fun day in the year! We hope field day next year is twice as much fun.

Mrs. McAllister Written by Urwa, Katie and Taylor Guess what? We interviewed Mrs. McAllister in a summer safety interview. She shared some rules we should know about summer safety. Summer bike riding was our first question and she told us to wear a helmet, use hand signals and ride your bike in partners. Next we wanted to know how to stay safe at the pool. We learned we need to always stay with a group and never swim alone. She also told us we should only swim if a life guard is at the pool. We also wanted to know about Mrs. McAllister and her job. She studied counseling and psychology in college. She has been a school counselor for six years and that’s a lot! She works with kids and classes, teachers and parents. She teaches kindergarten, first, second and third grade classes. She works with them on tattling and self control. She works with about four classes a day. When people ask how many kids she has, she tells them 800 because she is at school every day with us. At least 25 kids come to talk to her each day! When she is not working with kids, she answers emails, phone calls, talks to teachers and plans lessons. She knows all the teachers at our school and some at other schools. She likes reading, riding her bike and going on a boat. Mrs. McAllister is a great counselor!

Our Newspaper Hey, look what’s in our newspaper! It’s our stories with our buddies. The first day our buddies came to see us was October 10th. Our buddy is Raven. She helped us interview Mr. Ashenburg, Mrs. Brown, and writing a story on Henricus Park. The other buddies wrote stories about Mrs. Dolan, the cafeteria manager, Mrs. Hines, Sarah’s mom, and other people. It is June now, and our buddies have been coming for a long time. We all love our buddies very much.

Our Talents Our class talent is teamwork! On our holiday program we helped each other learn lines and the dances. We work in groups on projects, in Literacy Laps, buddy reading, our newspaper and we are producers. Sometimes we share ideas, supplies and at Morning Meetings we share stories. We even work together to solve problems. When a classmate was hurt, we were happy to write for him. We help each other catch up when someone has been sick. Sometimes we stop class to help others because we care about each other. Teamwork makes us better people.

Parents, Writing this newspaper has been a great experience for us all! This year we were fortunate to collaborate with Mrs. Humphrey's high school class from Manchester. The enthusiasm and anticipation throughout this project was evident each time the children planned their stories and anxiously awaited the arrival of their high school friends. In this final newspaper, I want my students to know how proud I am of their writing and their teamwork. I also want to thank Mrs. Michaels, Mrs. Humphrey, Asia, Stacia, Gaby, Karen, Allexus, Sarah, Jordan,Raven and Ryan for your patience and hard work.

Mrs. Shilling

Our Projects Some of the projects we’ve done this year are the Egypt and China projects, plant project, number neighborhood project, face project and the marshmallow project. Malcolm’s favorite projects were the marshmallow and kite projects. He liked the marshmallow project even though it was hard and really frustrating using the noodles and marshmallows to build a tower. Malcolm likes working on projects that are outstanding and amazing. Aiden liked all of the projects; his favorite was the plant project. His plant was a green pepper- he liked that his plant will grow and sprout peppers. Aiden likes doing projects because they make him feel good, happy and because they’re interesting. Jillian’s favorite project was one that they did in the beginning of the year- it was the face project. Their faces were made out of colored construction paper, and their hair was made out of string and yarn. She liked how her face looked just like her. Another thing that happens in Mrs. Shilling’s class is the Star of the Week. This is when we vote for a classmate and then the votes go in a box and are picked. If you get picked, you get a poster and you have to make it about yourself using pictures. When you finish the poster you bring it back and share it with the class. Jillian and Malcolm have both been Star of the Week.

Our Trip to Manchester High School Written by Ashlyn, Alex and Aiden Guess what? Manchester High School is big! We went to visit our high school buddies and work on our newspaper. First, we went to Mrs. Richards’ chemistry class. We saw an experiment with milk and food coloring. We got to see a safety shower and how to get chemicals out of your eyes.It was cool! Then, we went to the library. The kids get to check out four books for three weeks. There were a lot of books and magazines there. They gave us a bookmark. Next, we went to the computer lab and met our buddies to work on the news. The principal and two assistant principals came to see our stories and watch us work. Jason, an editor from Manchester, looked at what we were writing. We went into Mrs. Humphrey’s class and sat in big desks that were attached to chairs. We gave our buddies cards, hugs and ate cake. Our trip to Manchester was the best field trip ever!
