DID YOU KNOW?
The Valentine’s Day (Feb 14th) that we know today originated in
the 18th Century, when a British publisher began writing
sentimental verses of poems “for the young lover unable to
compose his own”. The modern cliché poem we know very well
came from a collection of English nursery rhymes in Gammer
Gurton's Garland from 1784:
The rose is red, the violet's blue, The honey's sweet, and so are you.
Thou art my love and I am thine; I drew thee to my Valentine:
The lot was cast and then I drew, And Fortune said it shou'd be you.
DON’T FORGET!
Year 9 Progress Evening is on Wednesday 15th February - please contact main office if you are unable to attend.
To all Year 11, make sure you get plenty of revision in during your half term break, as we have more mock exams at the end next month!
Our final day before we break up for half term is the 17th of February and we will return on the 27th of February!
We have immunisations on the first week back for Years 9 and 11 so make sure all your forms are handed in this week!

Outstanding Art Work from Year 11 Pupils
The Year 11 art work that we are showcasing is the students’ preparation for their GCSE exams, which is a 10 hour exam.
They have to respond to one of 7 themes set by the exam board and produce preparation that shows ideas, development
and experimentation on their chosen theme. They will also have to explore how other artists respond to their theme and
show that they been inspired by them.
Mrs Abberley tells us how they are progressing:
‘We are really proud of the Year 11 students and how they are demonstrating great independence and enthusiasm for their
chosen theme. The mock exam before Christmas was a real learning curve for some and they have taken to their real exam
with great gusto. Their 10 hour exam is on 16th and 17th of March and we are looking forward to seeing what they
produce.’

What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?
The Duke of Edinburgh award was launched in assemblies for Year 9 and 10 pupils recently. The D of E Award is a
nationally recognised qualification which is fast becoming a desired qualification by local employers. As a result, many have
pledged to guarantee award holders an interview when applying for jobs with them. In order to achieve the award, pupils
complete four sections of the course and upload evidence of their activities to the DofE website to achieve the award. The
sections are: Physical, Skill, Volunteering and Expedition. The practice expedition will take place in Llangollen from Friday
19th of May to Sunday 21st of May 2017 and the qualifying expedition is scheduled for Friday 14th – Sunday 16th July 2017.
Both consist of three days hiking and two nights camping during which pupils will be self-sufficient in navigation and carry
their own equipment. Tents, cookers, maps, compasses and training are all supplied by the school. We are proud to be the
only mainstream school in Crewe offer this prestigious award.
A Lesson in Rock and Roll!
Miss Hoole helped out in a music lesson recently where two pupils really impressed her with their Rock and Roll performance.
Cameron Hanlon played the chords and Caitlain Grant played the walking bass line in a piece of rock and roll music. The
students where casually teaching Miss Hoole about reading and playing music whilst learning the piece themselves. She was so
impressed with what they achieved!
Exceptional Talent at The Oaks Academy!
Special mention of a particular piece of artwork goes to Amy
Curley, who hand drew this amazing leopard from a small photo
as a reference. Mrs Allman was seriously impressed, as were so
many other members of staff who viewed the piece - All of us at
the Academy would like to thank you for showing us your amaz-
ing talent, and we hope more students are keen to show us their
work,. Another student who has shown us an amazing talent is
Kieron Humphries, who spends his free time searching for the
perfect landscape shots! His amazing work is available to view on
our school website in the News section!
