Origins are funny old things. What went through the mind of thefirst musician who made that much-sampled high-pitched‘whoop’ noise and decided it would go really well on their next

track? I just like to imagine thediscussion that ensued as theypushed their idea against thetide of “You-stepped-on-a-cat-mate” from friends and col-leagues. “No,” they would pa-tiently explain, “I think thiswould punctuate well just howstrongly I feel at an emotivelevel about this bit of the song.” And the gathered arguing masses wouldstill not be convinced but would give it a shot to humour the boss.

There are so many gloriously ridiculous things we just don’t think twiceabout these days. Giant chocolate buttons. Who are we trying to kid? So,they’re small drops of a chocolate bar that’ll fit into small hands... butmade bigger for big hands so that we feel small again. Just call it a secondchildhood, eat a Yorkie and have done with it. And then try one of thosefreaky new chocolate bars with popping candy in them because it’s justtoo much bother to eat two kinds of sweets in two separate ways. And welove a childhood callback. Or I do at least.

I’ve always found that if I don’t know a reason for a thing then I makeone up, and before long I believe it. The reason people say ‘touch wood’ isbecause the Devil will hear you tempting fate with your affirmative statements, and the only way to shoo him is to touch something from nature and he’ll go into that instead of being around you. No one told methat. I made it up. And then forgot that I made it up.

You should’ve seen the weird looks I got as I voiced this explanation asa teenager having thought my grandmother had told it to me, rather thanremembering that I’d created it out of my runaway imagination. And nowit’s an origin story for about half a dozen people who I never updated onthe story.

New schemes and ideas kick off and circulate all the time. They swim inthe ether of the world, some of them disappear and others rise to prominence and become accepted without question as a ‘whoop’ that allright-thinking music-lovers embrace. And so it should be. But every nowand again, it does a brain good to stop and reflect where it all really camefrom.

If you haven’t seen my telly showyet, where the hell have youbeen? We’re up to sixteen

episodes now, which is longer (butadmittedly, not as good) thanFawlty Towers. So respect, whererespect is due please. If you haven’tseen it, it’s on Friday nights onLatest TV at 7pm and if you missthat because that ‘drink after work’turned in to a binge, then you get asecond shot the following night at7.30pm. Wondering why viewers aredropping for X Factor? Well, now youknow.

So let me give you a little taster asto what the show is all about. It’s ashow that tackles life. Heavy, eh? Letme break that down for you. Eachweek, I explore two subjects thathave some impact or affect our livesin some ways. Previous topics havecovered subjects as diverse as love, pets, public transport and publicdisplays of affection. I explore thesesubjects by giving my own viewsand sharing my experiences on saidsubject, I then go out and talk to thegeneral public and get their viewsand I play out some weird andwonderful YouTube clips relevant to

that subject. So that’s the format. It’s a half-

hour show, with an interval thatallows you to relieve yourself andstock up on refreshments. It haseverything and it caters to yourneeds.

So coming up on this week’sepisode, I’m looking at religion andhobbies. Religion’s a tricky one. I’lltry and keep it light but let’s face it,we’re going to get some variedviews on this contentious subject.

Personally, even though I’m not

religious myself, I can see whyreligion gives people a sense ofpurpose and why a faith is soimportant to so many peoplearound the world. Out of all thereligions, I probably identify withBuddhism the most, as it is basedmainly on the self and how we canimprove as human beings andsupport one another. I’ve takencertain practices from this, such asmeditation and found it very useful.

However, I can also see howreligion can become extreme andout of that, there can be great painand suffering. You only have to lookat the world’s history and what isgoing on today, to see that. So it willbe interesting to see how the showdevelops when exploring this.

Secondly, I’ll be looking athobbies. I’m fascinated by people’shobbies and pastimes. I read a storyrecently about a man who had kepta diary of his lawn-mowing exploitsfor most of his life. Yes, it wouldmost likely have been a very dullread but I love passion and I lovecommitment and so, even withoutmeeting him, I love this man. He’stotally dedicated to diarising hisgrass-cutting and I really admirethat.

If I’m honest, I’m probably quitejealous of lawnmower man. At leasthe has a hobby. I don’t. I used to

There’s plenty to tickle yourbrain and pique yourcuriosity going on all over

the country. So Digital Nation’scollection of some of the mostintriguing, entertaining and evendownright touching from Latest TV’snational contemporaries – as well asthe odd story that you may havemissed from Brighton’s ownchannel – is a fragrant bouquet ofblooms gathered up to charm everydiscerning eye.

Brightonians may think that they

lead the way in eco-technology but ithasn’t always been so. STVGlasgow’s David Farrell steps intothe first ever electric car, knownsimply as the Scamp. Launched in1967 at the Ideal Home Exhibition inLondon, it was a great idea butwithout quite the technology wehave today to back it up. David findsout a bit more about the car’s historyand rocky road tests.

Lord Richard Attenborough takescentre stage in a clip from Latest TV,casting an eye over the SussexUniversity’s tribute to its formerchancellor who made such a majorimpact on the entertainmentindustry for much of the twentiethcentury. With access to rare personalphotographs that span the decades, leant by Lord Attenborough’s family, this glimpse is a real treat.

Local football pride is a universaltruth, from the Seagulls at home toNottingham’s devotion to Forest.

In my twenties, my main hobbyoutside of work was partying. Thiswent on for a long time. Then I got aserious job and a job I really loveand I haven’t had a serious hobbysince. Yes, I have the odd game offootball, I might go to the cinemaoccasionally, I go to see lots of livemusic but I want a proper hobby. Anerdy hobby. I hope to find oneduring Friday’s show. Itravel a fair deal and on mytravels I love to see citieswhere streets are not paved

with gold but adorned with publicart. Across the world it wouldseem that creativity is honouredby being given a place in andamongst our daily lives. I’m notjust talking about countriesbeyond the UK but in cities heretoo, sculptures, fountains, murals(by which I by no means includetagging) and so much more.

So why is it that in the city ofBrighton and Hove there is solittle. I have lived here 30 yearsnow and I cannot think of muchhappening across those years. Ican name the Kiss Wall, thedoughnut on the groin, that oddbut effective work on thepebbles that kids seem to thinkis a skateboard ramp and theever-changing murals inKensington Street that certainly

brighten up the environment. I alsolike the marvelous iron gates on theAvalon building in West Street thatcan so easily be missed, butbeyond that… well forgive me if Ihave missed something.

I know that we trade heavily on

being such a hubof creativity, butwhere is thepublic evidenceof this? Well keepyour eyes peeled, not for a whileyet but prettysoon a newinitiative, calledthe Hove Plinth, will finally cometo fruition.

I was recentlyinvited to see thethree winners of

a competition to create works thatwill sit on said plinth revealed. Ittook place in the Mayor’s Parlour, acharming room with some rathergood art on the walls in the OldTown Hall. There we wereintroduced to the artists and shown

maquettes of the winning entries. Each of the winners will see their

work commissioned and placed onthe plinth for between 12 and 18months. After which a permanentsite within the city will be soughtfor them to go on permanentdisplay.

There was a buzz of excitementas each was revealed and first outwas Escape by Matthew JamesDavies. His cast clear blue resinwork is a sinuous twist of vibrantlight filled joy, a celebration ofmovement made still. It was easyto imagine how beautiful it willlook set against the changing skiesand seascapes of Hove seafront.Whilst a solid form, it breathes anenergy that could be seen as wavesor as soaring starlings in atriumphant murmuration…

Next came Flight of theLangoustine by PierreDiamantopoulo, inspired by alobster pot wrecked by a stormysea. His work, an enormous brokengrill is penetrated by athletichuman forms escaping tosomething beyond. There is a realenergy to this and from themaquette it would appear to betruly monumental in scale.

Final Constellation by JonathanWright, which looks not unlike anorary into which iconic symbols ofHove have crashed. Those symbolschosen in consultation with Hoveresidents I believe. Perhaps myleast favourite in maquette form itwill no doubt be a work of ongoingdevelopment and still has much toadmire. I really look forward toseeing all three and hope that thiswill continue beyond those threeand become an ongoing project.

Of course to do this funds willhave to be found and the moniesrequired are not small. Hove CivicSociety, the organisation behindthis initiative have already raisedpledges of £55,000 but much moreis need to enable the project toachieve its full potential. To do thisthey have created a variety ofsupport opportunities starting withone-off donations and rising toannual Founder Legacy Pledges of£50 a year and then rising throughbronze, silver and gold. There arebrochures with donation formsaround the city.Online donations can be made viawww.justgiving.com/hovecivicsocietyFor more information [email protected]

The politics of food grows mealby meal. Right now I amfascinated by the city’s new

Sugar Smart campaign and you willsee that my column will carry that logofor as long as it goes on. Hidden sugaris a real issue, for adults yes, but mostimportantly for kids. This joins myenthusiasm for the Fare Share charitywho redistribute food that wouldotherwise be sent to landfill. I shopwisely, have little if no food waste andalthough I do have sugar and honey, Iuse very little. Whilst making the CookIt! TV series for Latest TV I would cookwith kids and wanted them to learn toenjoy home-made dishes and healthieralternatives to some of the junk that isparaded in front of them.

A real champion of zero waste is chefDouglas McMaster at Silo. His pre-industrial ethics are admirable, apassion that he is making work – butwhat of his cooking?

Now open for one year I wasdelighted to be asked along tocelebrate the occasion, delighted andeager to see how the concept hasdeveloped. I admit to being slightlyambiguous at the start, would ethicsoutshine cooking? Well I was wrong toworry! Douglas is as triumphant as achef as he is as an advocate of hispolitics. Let me expand.

Dinner started with a couple ofplates that not only looked impressive but tasted great too. Dehydratedpotato skins with a rich eggy sauce and moss was exceptional, a fabulousbalance of earthy, crunchy and unctuous. Skin and blood was a marvelousSpanish style scroll of pork scratching with a deep blood red ketchup, againmarvelous.

We moved on to pig’s ear, corn and egg. Well I have never tasted bettercorn, tiny, sweet kernels balanced with a confit egg yolk and strands of crisppig’s ear that had all the flavour of bacon rinds back in the day when baconrinds would crisp up like pork crackling. A crackling good dish.

I sat at the counter, a great choice as Douglas passed over the herbivorechoices for me to try too and I loved the jerusalem artichokes dusted withgrated liquorice root and a green apple puree – wow!

Next up for the omnivores a perfect piece of halibut served with salsify inroasted and pureed form. Wonderful fish, really wonderful and great salsify.Beneath an earthy and slightly sweetened broth and pickled wild

mushrooms. Lovely as the mushrooms were they were a touch too lively forthe rest of the dish in my opinion, but as ever that is only my opinion.

The herbivore option was ricotta and blue cheese dumplings with fennelsalad. Oh my, what a delightful dish – and a generous one too! (At this point Iwould like to point out that I was sharing the extra dishes with Tom, whowas sat to my left, a passionate cook and food blogger).

Next for the omnivores came venison. Game season is here and Douglaswas celebrating that with slices of perfect meat dressed with pine oil andpickled brambles. Foraging here at its very best, wonderful sweet bramblesand a deep green oil that had just the right amount of pine flavour to befascinating rather than astringent.

As you will see there was a lot of food and we did pass on the herbivoredish of cauliflower with red onion and mustard. It looked stunning but was,we thought, a dish too far for us – and there was dessert to come!

I was served the sweetcorn, rye and lemon and loved it. The rye grainshad been boiled, then dehydrated then fried and they were simply delicious. The corn once again sweet and perfectly appropriate as a pudding and thelemon came as a course granita. Tom had the sea buckthorn dessert withcelery and rose and I admit that neither of us liked it – but one miss out of alist of so many hits can be easily forgiven. Throughout the dishes werematched with fascinating wines and breads and we finished with shots ofcold brew coffee and chocolate and molasses truffles. I went home veryhappy and look forward to going back which is now far easier as they canfinally open the restaurant to 11pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.39 Upper Gardner Street, North Laine, Brighton, BN1 4AN01273 674259 www.silobrighton.com

The catwalk season hasofficially ended andBrighton Fashion Week

finishes it on a high. I attended theZeitgeist catwalk show and showreelcompetition on October 16 and I wasamazed at just how brilliant it was.

I’m totally in my element whenfashion month begins and theInternet is flooded with pictures of

models showcasing new trends fromaround the world. Having recentlyattended London Fashion Week Iknew that Brighton had a lot to liveup to but clearly they weren’tworried.

All Saints Church in Hove wascompletely unrecognisable inside; ithad been transformed into a runwaycomplete with a bar and hundreds ofpeople passionate about fashion. Ispoke to makeup artists, designersand students and their love offashion was the one thing that theyall had in common which made foran incredible atmosphere.

All of the designers adhered to a

pledge of sustainability, whichincluded using recycled goods orwaste in their designs. Eachcollection was very different; Ipersonally liked the wintry blue/greycolours that both Isaac Raymondand Fanny Holst used in theircollections.

Tracey Dockree’s collection wasinteresting and quite unusual; itfeatured many of the models withbig padded hoods that made themlook like they had square heads.

The show concluded with thecollection by Hellavagirl, which wasa creative (and bizarre) mix of

“One modelhanded the

audiencesections ofyarn acrossthe runway

elaborate costumes. After this the Showreel Design

Competition began, the theme was‘Beauty from Waste’ and there was apromise of £1,000 for thewinner. Recycled plastic, magazines, cigarette packets and even chickenskin were materials used in thedesigns. Not only did the modelsshowcase the fashion and art they

were wearing but they performed.Anne Sophie Cochevelou’s

collection had one model handingthe audience sections of yarn acrossthe runway so that the next modelhad to cut through it.

The winner of the prize, as judgedby Jess Eaton, Cat Fletcher, DamianSantamaria and Laura Santamaria, was Afton Ayache. The design wasinspired by a story of selflessness andappreciation for what we have, wastewas used to create the African prints.

The whole show was eccentric, and unusual just like the city ofBrighton, so I loved it.

Adele, who has a home inBrighton, teased herfans with a snippet from

her new album during the X Factoradvert break on 18th October. Hereagerly awaited album is notthought to be out until next month.Twitter went crazy after the 30-second clip of her distinctive voiceaired. One fan tweeted: “I need thewhole album, Adele. I need thewhole album.”

Spotted:Lottie Moss, model and sister ofKate Moss was spotted sitting inthe front row of the Zeitgeistshowcase, sat next to her mother,Inger Moss, and the event directorLizzy Bishop. Lottie told me thatshe was attending because Ingerhad a few of her models walking inthe show and she was there tosupport them.

Well The Apprentice is back, and this year kicks off with thoseinfamous shots of people in suits marching through KingsCross St Pancras (even though they live in Peckham)

peppered with soundbites from the new batch of contestants. It’s the same old chat – such as “I want the cars, the women and the

power” (because Lord S is famous for all those women); or “I’m a Swissarmy knife of business” (so five parts useful, fifteen parts only useful ifcaught in an avalanche?); or “I’m disgustingly ambitious” (or are yousimply disgusting?); then there’s the woman who “wakes up with achemical surge of power in the morning to become a globalphenomenon” (despite only actually saying one sentence during the restof the episode); there are two wannabe Anglo-Italians, one of whomstates that he’s “going to be richer than Lord Sugar, and he needs torealise that” (which is always the way to encourage someone to give youhis money).

Finally there’s Sue Pollard in a pink tartan wool suit. So that’s that bitout of the way. Except from one other who claims that he’ll wait until theboardroom and then pounce (he’s the one that gets fired).

Nick’s off in Leeds doing Countdown now, so they unveil that horridClaude bloke as the new aide, who is usually to be seen ripping apart thebusiness plans in the penultimate episode of the season. The candidatesare all a little bit sick in their mouths at this news. Karren is now Baroness.

The task has them designing fish dishes to sell on street corners. Teamnames are decided: Versatile and something like Connectus or Connect4or something. Selena the pole dancer is allocated as PM because she isintolerant to a load of food. April from Jamaica is PM on the other teambecause she is taller and prettier than the average person.

Off they’re all sent to Billingsgate at 2am to purchase some cheaprancid squid andunsalted codsubstitute. Then it’s tothe kitchen to makethe dishes semi-edible. Versatile do abit of a bish, bash, bosh job and are offselling lunch atlunchtime. April onthe other hand spends a load of time telling people off so they miss thelunch rush and try to make up for it by charging people 900 pence for asoggy tuna salad.

When in the boardroom, the guy who is allegedly going to be richer oneday than Lord Sugar starts rambling about how he was reallydisappointed with everyone else, but then it comes out that he tried tosell fish to a vegan.

But it’s the opposing team that lose, making only about a pound’sworth of profit. April brings back in Dan and Brett who tries to defendhimself by uttering the following sentence:

“Lord Sugar I can honestly tell you that I generally categorically did notstipulate with any other specification than that recipe and the way it wasput together.”

10 points if you can work that sentence out.Dan asks that he be saved from termination because he is “good at

addition and mathematics” and that during the task he “sliced the olivesand tomatoes and was doing the pans”. He’s fired, of course!Andrew Bullock is a producer, presenter and writer. You can read more atwww.drewjbullock.wordpress.com

Acid (the Latin for sour substance) is one of the class of substancesthat are neutralised by alkaline. Alkaline is found a lot in nature .In ancient times the Chinese and Greeks used to refer to the veins

in the human body as rivers of blood or rivers of life. As you may know if youget an alkaline river it is full of life: fish, bugs, plants etc; whereas an acidicriver is dead i.e. full of death, decay and disease.

In 1931, a man called DrOtto Walburg discovered thecause of cancer. He wasawarded the Nobel Prize forhis work. He was of theunderstanding that if youwanted to do somethingabout cancer you needed toknow the cause and his work becameknown as the Walberg effect. Basically, cancer cells live off sugar (glucose) andalso thrive in an acidic environment, DrWalberg was quoted as saying that nodisease including cancer can exist in analkaline environment. Therefore in myopinion, going by Dr Walberg’s findings,it makes sense to put as much alkalinefood and drink into your body asopposed to acidic foods which in turnfeed cancer growth.

The human blood pH level should beslightly alkaline (7.35-7.45), below orabove this range means symptoms anddisease, so it is important toeat a balanced diet. Yourbody’s pH affects everything, therefore balancing the pH is amajor step forward inwellbeing and greater health.PH is a whole new world and Iwill write about this someother time – bloody interesting(sorry about the pun).

Human beings seem to lovean acidic diet i.e. the typical American diet: animal protein, meat, butter, alcohol, coffee, soft drinks, drugs, tobacco and stress. If it is in a packet it isprobably acidic. All foods, like fruit and vegetables and some spices arealkalising. One of the best things you can put in your mouth is watermelon, even lemons change from an acid to an alkaline when they enter the humanbody. A guide listing alkaline and acidic foods can be found on the followingwebsite: www.rense.com/1.mpicons/acidalka.htm

I personally think alkaline wins all the time in the battle for a healthy body,as my Nan used to say ‘all in moderation’, and she was so right. I hope youhave enjoyed this read. I have read about all the information I havementioned on the internet, but if you have any worries about your healthyou should always see your Doctor.

The witchinghour is almostnigh and in

order to mark theoccasion Lush freshhandmade cosmeticshave conjured up aspooky array of freakyfun bathroom products.

In my opinion Lushshould be commendedfor their nod toHalloween, as manybusinesses seem to havebypassed the pumpkinseason altogether andinstead have chosen todive headlong intoChristmas.

I was invited to takesaid products for a testrun and was mostexcited to receive aspooky Halloween package containingNight wing shower jelly, a sparklypumpkin bubble bar and Lord ofMisrule shower scream and bath bomb.

Overjoyed at the prospect ofspending the entire weekend indulgingin decadent baths and sweet smellingshowers, first on the agenda was theNight wing shower jelly. The product is bat-shaped and jet-black, its wobbly consistencyreleases a zingy lime scent and purple lather when rubbed onto the skin.Apparently it is also packed with aloe gel and carob syrup, overall a lot offun to use and would be afirm favourite with youngand old trick or treatersalike.

Shower number twofeatured the Lord of Misruleshower scream. Lush’ssenior press officer,Elizabeth Bowles, informedme that the name isinspired by the ruler of thepagan feast of fools. Feelingmad, bad and dangerous toknow in such insalubrious company, I stepped into the shower with highexpectations. I was not disappointed. The product contains a blend ofblack pepper, patchouli and fair trade vanilla, and it smells divine. Whatimpressed me the most was the long-lasting fragrance it left behind onmy skin, even hours after showering.

The accompanying Lord of Misrule bath bomb was undoubtedly thestar of the show. After dropping it into the water I watched the greenglobe effervesce slowly before it gave way to a deep red interior, theoverall effect gave my bath a witch’s cauldron makeover, notably when itpopped and fizzed. Again, loads of fun and I couldn’t wait to get in.

My fourth and final Lush bathroom experience was with the sparklypumpkin bubble bar, fragranced with a fruity blend of juniper berry, grapefruit and lime. This one was the most pleasing to the eye beingpumpkin shaped, burnt orange and covered in a ton of gold glitter –what’s not to love? It’s also great value for money as you don’t use thewhole thing at once. I crumbled half of it into the bath and watched mytub quickly become a convivial haven of bubbles.

Not only do I smell infinitely sweeter than usual, but so does my home.I would highly recommend all of these products as they will certainlyprovide an extra dimension of fun this Halloween.

It’s around two and a halfhours in to a four hourtrek off-road through the

Ethiopian highlands that Icome to the decision that I’mnever going to complainabout my commute again.

I’m accompanying ajournalist on a press trip (a semi-regular aspect of my job), on a route thattakes us from Bahir Dar, a palm-fringed resort town on the shores of LakeTana, to the ramshackle township of Mertule Mariam in the distant north. The Chinese, our guide tells us, have grand plans to build a highway betweenthese two places (just another example of China’s gold rush into East Africa),but our party has arrived eight months too early and must do the whole tripon the old road, which is little more than a dirt track dotted with rocks andcratered with pot-holes.

To say it’s uncomfortable going is an understatement. Even in our air-conditioned land-cruiser, and with our experienced local driver, the carbucks and plummets like a stallion that’s caught sight of a gelding iron. Insome places, the Chinese have already shipped in their heavy machinery, although their only achievement so far has been to churn the track into amuddy soup, which of course the local jalopies get stuck in, blocking theroad.

Compounding our misery is the seatbelt situation, the situation being thatI don’t have one. Earlier, on discovering that the car was only equipped withone working seatbelt, I did the professional thing and offered it to thejournalist. I am now seriously regretting that decision, as every time we hitone of the larger potholes my head bangs into the car roof (later, when wefinally return to Bahir Dar, it will take a day and a half before my visionreturns to normal).

Despite all this, as I stare queasily through the window at the highlandfarmers driving their goats and oxen to pasture, I somehow find myselfcounting my blessings. These may not be the same Ethiopians that firstJonathan Dimbleby and then Live Aid dragged to the west’s attention – thefields are a healthy green these days, enough for most farmers to scratch aliving at least – but economic recovery has been a long march. In one village,I see a man crouched by the road, drinking muddy water from tyre tracks. Inanother, the wooden shacks have been flattened like the aftermath of ahurricane, yet people are clearly still living in them. My guide assures methese are normal sights in the highlands, but it’s impossible for a westernernot to be challenged by them.

So no more complaining from now on, I tell myself. However bumpy thisride, however many times I bang my head against the ceiling, I might as wellbe in a Lear Jet compared to the millions worldwide whose daily commute isdone in threadbare sandals over stony ground, and with no guarantee ofincome at the end of it. The 06.57 to Bedford never looked so good.

Brighton &Hove Busesattended

Woodingdean'sCommunity Conferenceon Saturday 10 Octoberto report on serviceimprovements to route 2and 22 further to apublic consultationcarried out in March.

The publicconsultation aimed tolisten to theWoodingdeancommunity about theirexperience with busservices in the area. Thebus company reported avery high response ratewhich informed Brighton& Hove Buses that themajority of residents didnot want any changesimplemented to therouting of service 2 and22 but for servicereliability to besignificantly improved.

To address this, as wellas operational actions toimprove servicereliability, the bus companymade an investment of£600,000 per annum to providean additional bus to service 2,giving more running time andmaintaining the existing 20peak time frequency morereliably, and an additional twobuses to service 22, improvingfrequency to every 15 minutes.

Andrew Boag, Chair ofBrighton Area Buswatch whichrepresents local bus users said:"We worked with Brighton &Hove Buses on suggested improvements and are pleased that there isnow a significant improvement to both the 2 and 22 services. The morefrequent service on the 22 coupled with improved reliability should makeit much more attractive to bus users in Woodingdean. The bus companyhas honoured the commitment made to local residents earlier in the yearwhen the service was poor and generating a lot of complaints. This is anexcellent outcome".

In regard to the operational actions made, bus company BusinessDevelopment Manager Patrick Warner said: "We paid particular attentionto how our controllers respond when our buses experience multipleinstances of severe congestion and roadworks throughout the city and asa result it is extremely rare now that a bus will ever be turned short or failto complete its journey into Woodingdean. At the conference theresidents recognised clear improvements in our services and thanked usfor listening to their views in February and throughout the consultation".

Former Woodingdean Councillor, Geoff Wells met with Brighton & HoveManaging Director Martin Harris earlier in the year to raise concerns aboutservice reliability prior to his retirement from the council. He said at theCommunity Conference on Saturday: "I would like to thank managersfrom Brighton & Hove Buses for taking our concerns seriously and saythat as a regular bus user, I have noticed the big improvement inreliability of our buses".

We held a meeting recently between Mile Oak PrimarySchool and STEMSussex regarding what activities we aregoing to hold on the Primary Science

and Technology bus. It was decided that wewould run with a nature theme programmeof events to begin with. It was thereforequite apt that I had just received a flyerto attend the Big Nature Event at theBrighton centre.

Big Nature is a not-for-profit companywith the goal to inspire a renaissance in therelationship between ourselves and localwildlife. To do this Big Nature aims to take threemajor steps:

1 Undertake a program of habitatrestoration within the Brighton & LewesDowns Biosphere, creating new habitatswherever the opportunity arises.

2 Promote Biodiversity Education withinthe Biosphere both on our own and withpartner organisations.

3 Build the Big Nature Centre in the heart of the Biosphere.

The communities of Brighton & Hove and Lewes have gained thedesignation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This aims to integrate thenatural environment with these conurbations, breaking down the artificialdivide between urban and rural areas, urban and rural living, enrichingthe lives of the people in the process.

The Big Nature Centre is an integral part of this objective, demonstrating how the goals of the Biosphere Reserve can turn intopositive action, providing a central focus, as well as a visitor’s centre forthe reserve. The visitor’s centre will be built on the 28 hectare SurrendenCampus, shared with seven other educational institutions including asixth form college, two secondary schools, an infant and junior school, acrèche and a special needs college.

It then occurred to me that nature does not abide by school catchmentareas and this is one area in education where every primary school andsecondary school in Brighton and Hove should collaborate together, sharing best practice. Ignoring inter-school competition, uniting under thebanner of ‘nature’, we could link the activities together, benefitting farmore individuals in Brighton and Hove rather than the select few.

I have said before how I abhor the unhealthy competition that has beenracked up between schools due to league tables. Brighton and Hoveschools need to share best practice and work together to raise thestandards within all schools and for all the children who live here.

The techy community have for years been using a form of open learningwhere they share best practice and help to solve each other’s problems. Itis known in the field as copyleft, rather than copyright. Schools withinBrighton and Hove should be leading the way in reform and implementingthis practice for the benefit of all the children. Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) is a college offering sixthform, 11-16 years, youth centre, adult learning, community education, sports centre and pre-school. After a two-yearstruggle, lastmonth saw the

opening of an exciting newco-operatively run artspace –Corridor Gallery – in YorkPlace. Like so many Brightonenterprises (Arty included),the idea was formed late oneevening in a local pub, wheretipsy chatter lead to thedream of creating a legal, sustainable shareddestination to display andsell a wide range of work –from handmade craft tocontemporary (or fine)installation art.

Now the red corridorpromises to lead you tomonthly exhibitionsshowcasing the wealth oflocal creative talent comingfrom a wide range ofdisciplines and backgrounds –and we can’t wait to seewhat’s in store. There’s a giftshop full of works by localartisans. And for local artists, the space provides faircommission rates and awonderful location to exhibit. There are no restrictions onthe types or style of art theCorridor team is hoping toshow. Agreat collection of musicians called the Riot Ensemble are intown this week, who I've been lucky enough to see twice beforeat concerts in the last few years. They aim to connect people to

contemporary music and are led by a core group of seven musicians, programming and producing concerts themselves and featuring musicthey want to play. Such passion and commitment shone through in theirprevious shows, with informative introductions and well-rehearsedplaying creating a fantastic all-round evening and a good atmosphere.

So far in my column I've looked at immediately melodic pieces thatwould appeal to music fans of all types, but this concert might appealmore to those with avant-garde or indie or alternative rock leanings. If youlike anything like Ben Frost, Nils Frahm, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, then thiscould be your kind of thing.

The Riot Ensemble will be playing modern classical, which can frightensome people but don’t let that put you off! There are melodies andsatisfying musical resolutions to be found, you just might have more of ajourney to find them, kind of like switching from Radiohead's The Bendsto Amnesiac perhaps.

Which isn't to say thatmodern classical music isn’tenjoyable, in my first reviewfrom over two years ago Iwrote that there werebeautiful gems such as anenthralling piano piece byNicholas Omiccioli. When Isaw them in 2014 theycombined local compositionswith international pieces, including Gustavo Penha's 'Estudo SobreGravitacao' which “evoked a horror movie soundtrack descent that wasunsettling in an enjoyable way”.

The programme is generous and good value for money, and includesJonathan Harvey's chamber masterwork 'Death of Light, Light of Death'.Harvey wrote that the “unflinching sense of catastrophe that hangs overthis picture has given it a special appeal to the sensibilities of our owntime.” The concert is centred around that haunting piece and alsoincludes Helen Grime's 'Oboe Quartet' and David Lang's 'Lend/Lease'piece for piccolo and woodblocks.

I’ve never seen live woodblock playing myself so I’m looking forward tothat, and atypical instrumentation is one of the joys of modern classicalmusic. There will also be music from Peter Copley, Phil Baker, PatrickHarrex and Jonathan Clark, all of whom are New Music Brightoncomposers who live and/or work in Brighton.

It's on an early night on Halloween so it could work as a fun, suitablyspooky outing before a night out. If you want to try something differentand striking this Saturday then give the Riot Ensemble a whirl. St. Nicholas Church, Brighton, Saturday 31 October, 5pm, Tickets £10 on thedoor (£5 concessions)

ENTERTAINMENTJOE FULLER The Riot Ensemble present local

modern classical music on Halloween

“This concert mightappeal to those with

avant-garde or indieleanings

As it is almost Halloween I am sure you are expecting here toread about some classic movie villains, about a great horrorfilm coming out this week or perhaps learn of the greatest and

most diabolical schemes to ever grace the silver screen… But isn’t that alljust a little too old hat?Haven’t we been there, done that?

Hollywood films areoften accused of beingformulaic and nowhere isthis more true than intheir slavish devotion tothe antagonist. Evenmodern ‘dark’ filmsfeaturing antiheros, orchildren’s films with a fullyredeemable baddy whogets their comeuppance, still abide by the rule.

Somehow, at somepoint, there will be a longsection or a repeated riffon misery-guts-ism(definitely a word theOxford English Dictionaryneeds to clue in to); a certain character will be evil or just plain mean tothe people around them and the heroes will be in conflict with eachother.

Once the bad character has been vanquished, once themisunderstandings between the leads has been corrected, then and onlythen can we all breathe a sigh of relief and start with the happy part of thefilm. Which is exactly when the end credits roll! In movie land, as soon aseverything is good and the world is in balance, the film must end.

There is no time for pleasing, pleasant scenes of characters beingsuccessful and nice because once the villain has been vanquished and theamped-up central conflict solved, the nice parts must be crushed into onefinal scene. It is an awful shame and I for one would like to see a lot moreof these happy times. I often find myself wishing there were fewer scenesof the miserable middle and more of the post-credits happy ever after.

Happily, two of the best films of this month managed to buck the trend:The Intern and The Martian. With the first being a sweet comedy about aretired old man and the second a space adventure they might not at firstappear to have much in common yet they both excellently circumventexpectations of conflict in film. Here we can watch in unmitigatedpleasure as talented people showcase their skills and have a lot of funtogether – which is equally great fun for the audience!

The protagonists of these films don’t labour to become good people:they’re already amazing. That’s why we’re watching a film about them.We don’t need a villain. Life is hard enough sometimes so let’s just sitback, relax and enjoy some refreshing kindness on our cinema screens. For more reviews, subscribe to my YouTube channel, MissJessicaKH andwatch Latest TV’s film review show MovieLine, every Wednesday at 6.30pmand repeated through the week. Happiest news story I've heard in a long time? The one about theRolling Stones and how they lose patience with their TV remotecontrols. This, believe me, is music to my ears. Unlike any of the

actual music the Stones have released in the last two decades.According to this report, Jagger, Richards and co., on their latest US

tour, insisted on having written instructions for all the electronics in theirhotel rooms. But the hidden implication of this story (namely, that theseguys have an average age of 147, so what else would we expect?) ismissing the point. This isn't an age-related issue. Not at all.

This is, very specifically, a remote control issue. Because TV remotecontrols are, without exception, designed by idiots. I know this for a fact, because I once visited a TV remote control factory and every single personin the design department, I swear, was wearing one of those big pointydunce's hats with the letter D on it. Turns out it was the company uniform.

So is it any wonder that theproduct they create – whichevercompany it's for – is about aspractical and real-worldcommonsense-driven as JeremyCorbyn? As I write this, for example,I've just picked up the nearestremote control I have to hand – for amodestly sized Toshiba, albeit witha built-in DVD – and can you guesshow many buttons it has? A coupleof dozen? Thirty?

Not even close. The remote control formy Toshiba RC-1910 has no fewer than 50individual buttons on it. I am not kidding.I think I've used about six.

It wouldn't be so bad if we had timeto plough our way through the manualfor these things. But we don't. Notleast because we have other remotecontrols screaming just as loudlyfor our attention, with dozens oftheir own stupid buttons.

I have a separate remote fora Sony Blu-ray player, forexample – again, not exactlytop of the market – and thatalone has a further 41.Seriously. Forty flippingone. Let's be honest, theonly buttons a TVremote control needsare to turn it on, turnit over, turn it up,and blow it tosmithereens ifKatie Hopkinscomes on.

So, yes, well done tothe RollingStones forhighlightingthis TV remotecontrol madness, albeitin their slightly mental rock-star fashion. I don't think this is age-relatedbefuddlement on their part, struggling to work these things out. I think it'sjust that they can't be bothered.

Which is fair enough. If I were a Rolling Stone, I'd do as they do. Paysomeone else to be bothered on my behalf.Mike Ward is the TV Critic of the Daily Star and the TV Editor of the Daily ExpressSaturday magazine. Bad JewsTheatre Royal Brighton, 19 October 2015, ★★★★★It may well be called Bad Jews but by the end of this grippingly vitriolichour and forty minutes of dark comedy it is clearly apparent that this playis a brilliant vehicle for expressing a sense of horror and dismay at thestate of the human condition.

Set in a studio apartment in uptown New York three cousins, Jewish, and one WASP lock horns over a piece of jewellery after the death of agrandparent. Delivered with breathtaking verve, and some very finemonologues, they gradually reveal their hands, a passionate clinging to areligious heritage, a fierce disregard for that same heritage, an outsidercaught up in the crossfire and a sibling who wants to be left out of theargument.

Rapidly relations deteriorate, with indifference, extremism, seeminglyinnocent bystander and conscientious objection all playing their part. Welaughed heartily, the script is excellently crafted to make you do so, butunder the brittle veneer of humour is a powerful story, one that exposesthe horror of racism, religious fervour and ethnic superiority.

Ailsa Joy is extraordinary as the impassioned Daphna, Daniel Boyd asLiam gives a brilliant performance, Antonia Kinlay is a perfect gentle foilto their anger and Jos Slovick is the soft connective tissue in this brilliantwork, holding the final twist so close to his whole that it comes as agentle, but disturbing, sigh of relief as the lights finally dim.Andrew Kay

Tommy Tiernan – Alive In BrightonCorn Exchange, Brighton Dome, 17 October 2015 ★★★★★Watching a comedian of this calibre follow his own flights of fancy with nopreparation whatsoever was both exhilarating and glorious. TommyTiernan switches from feral comic to winsome poet on a sixpence, skipping fierce ballet of wits against himself that is a privilege to witness. It’s a self-set challenge, to fill an hour that tonight takes us from lastnight’s dream, to a surprise encounter with Tiernan’s teenage idol on theseafront, and right through to the origins of man across the globe. A truecraic of a riveting time.Victoria Nangle

Hofesh Shechter Company’s barbariansConcert Hall, Brighton Dome, 21 October 2015 ★★★★★Ominously warned by staff that it “would be loud”, barbarians certainlydelivered, not only in volume but also in thematic terms, and even in thelighting. The opening ‘the barbarians in love’ piece was technicallydazzling, with a robotic, electronic Arca sort of soundtrack perfectlysynchronised with stark white lighting illuminating the tentative figuresbelow. The sensorial assault then abated to a moving respite of warmlight and neutral, uncertain nudity. ‘tHE bAD’ was a raucous, sexier rompwith a funny meta-moment when a dancer spoke to the audience that wasentertaining rather than gratuitously conceptual. The final part featuring aduet of lovers in different stages of a relationship was unnerving and sad,but also funny and sweet. A bewitching, turbulent, emotional, startlinglywell-rehearsed and directed marvel.Joe Fuller
