18th century colonial and Jesuit history of Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Venezuela. Latin

Latin American Material at the Newberry Library
The Latin American holdings of the Newberry Library emphasize the discovery, exploration, colonization,
and early political and social developments of Middle and South America. Special strengths include 16th to
18th century colonial and Jesuit history of Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Venezuela. Latin
American holdings are particularly strong in Mayan and Mexican archaeological materials and linguistics.

Over 50,000 volumes that relate to Latin America can be found within The Edward E. Ayer Collection of
American Indian History. Likewise, The William B. Greenlee Collection of Portuguese & Brazilian History
has a wealth of material for the study of Latin American History. The Newberry Library has about 400
Spanish American Colonial manuscripts, which are listed online under Spanish American Colonial
Manuscripts. An online catalog of cartographic material is available through the Newberry Library
