New Year Reception at Lauder

True to our tradition, the Lauder Javne School celebrated the Jewish New Year with its friends, supporters, and pro-fessional affiliates. Thanks to the support of the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation the main hall was jam-packed again on the 21st of September.

Gábor Horányi, Principal, and Zsuzsa Bárdi, former Presi-dent of the Parents Council, greeted all who celebrated with us. As in previous years, the audience was left spellbound by our school’s klezmer band: Z’mirim which was followed by Ádám Angel performing Torelli’s prelude on stage.

As our guests chatted and milled about, the sounds of mellow swing from the 20s and numerous Woody Allen movies were played. This year also marked the first in which the menu was prepared in our brand new Kosher kitchen. Each dish was delicious, especially the cholent.

We thank everyone for their generous donations and great company!Shana tova! May 5775 bring joy and success to all of us!

TER (PERFORMANCE RECOGNITION SYSTEM)

This year high-school students were celebrating Ros Hashana, the Jewish New Year, along with elementary students. This time of the year high-school students are also awarded the TER prize (Perfor-mance Recognition Sys-tem) which acknowl-edges their notable academic achievements.This year’s awards were handed over by a spe-

cial guest from America, Kata Kozma, a Lauder alumna and successful jazz pianist. Kata graduated at Lauder in 2007, and her congenial and cheerful style found her way into everyone’s heart.TER Prize was awarded to Bálint Kiss, Viktoria Makai, Hanna Sárdi, Olivér

FELDMÁR-KÖRÖSY PRIZE

In recognition of their dedicated work, the School Board traditionally also awards either a mentor or a teacher the Feldmár-Kőrösy prize. This year, from among twenty-four nominies, Timea Tóth, teacher received the award. Timi was nominated by parents, teachers and stu-dents alike and her current and past pupils were cheering with joy.Congratulation to all of them!

HIGHER EDUCATION FAIROn October 13th we held the 3rd annual international higher education fair at the Lauder School. The fair provides a unique opportunity for our high school students to obtain information on university education and entry requirements not only in some of the EU Countries but in Israel and the United States as well. In addition the participating students can also gather information on a variety of pre-paratory programs provided for Hungarian students to support their study abroad.

JEWISH OUTREACH

Guests from Ashdod We started the second week of the school year with hosting of a special group. With support of local Jewish organizations a group of young people came from Ashdod to Hungary for a week. They paid a visit to our school on their tour so that they could forget the horror of sirens and rockets. Singing and playing made the day unforgettable for all of us. It was great!We want you all back soon!

AN ANGEL HAS FLOWN OVER USPremiere in Lauder

Lauder School hosted a very special preformance on the 14th of October about Gitta Malász whose figure was brought to life by Andrea Takáts’s acting. The play lets us gain insight into Gitta Mallász’s memoirs, and we come to know how she, a graphic designer and champion swimmer, became a lifesaver.

During the Holocaust, Gitta Mallász (1907-1992) saved over a hundred Jewish women and children in the very place of our kin-dergarten. Yet, she was unable to save her creative partner and friend, Hanna and their common friend, Lili. Her grief and sorrow over the failure accompanied her through her entire life but her bravery was acknowledged and in 2011 she was awarded Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.

After the play, in the courtyard of Lauder School, Gábor Horányi, Principal, and Gábor Deák, founder and member of the advisory board, inaugurated the statue of Gitta Mallász molding an angel and a star of David designed by Margit Balla.

The performance was supported by the Matanel Foundation and it will be on tour

GERMAN GUESTS IN LAUDER

True to the nature of Succot we received some special guests in our succah. A German group of mostly teachers and educators paid a visit to our school and kindergarten within the framework of the trip called ’get to know the Jewish Budapest’. They came to take a look at the pulsing Jewish life in Budapest by visiting different institutes, museums, and organizations.We showed them around, and told them about the special world of Lauder. They happily joined the Kinder-gartners in singing and dancing, then joined us for lunch in the school.The pictures show how much we all enjoyed the program, our guests even said they would gladly have stayed with us longer.

MITZVAH

FUNDRAISING FOR THE ANIMAL SHELTER IN GYÖMRŐ

Class Bárka and Pálma are fundraising in October and November in Lauder School.

With their Mitzvah, they will support the animal shelter in Gyömrő. Programs will be organized around the charity, and all money raised will be given to the animal shelter.

The helpful and enthusiastic students will hold a bake sale in the school hall, hold a dog-petting event, and have made cardboard animal figures so that visitors can take fun photographs. In addition, they will be taking dona-tions of money or supplies for the animals.

The students are really excited for this opportunity and are organizing this event

with great dedication.
