Various Travels Throuahou t Sou th AfricaOur work here takes us to many places. Since we

are involved in Leadership Training and take the classes towhere the people are, this involves going to a lotof differenttowns. One ofthe things we likeabout living inGeorge, ascompared to living in Cape Town, is that we ar e morecentrally located. As we said when we were on furlough, there is an easy way to locate the town of George on amap ofAfrica. Find a map ofAfrica and place your finger inthe middle of the continent. Go straight to the bottom ofthe map and right before you hit the Indian ocean, youhave hit the town of George. You can se e how central tothe country of South Africa George is.

That being said, here are a few of the trips we havetaken for t imes of teaching since our last newsletter. InNovember, we were involved with a convention of th eNorthern Cape churches in the town of Barkiy-West. Thisgathering ha s been going on since 1986 and it services thechurches that are located in this area and that are not ableto go to the national conventions. Ithas served its purposewell. The times of teaching started on Friday night and

continued through Saturday until the closing service onSunday morning. Fran taught a women's class, Itaught amen's class , we taught a youth class together, and Ipreached on Sunday morning. The re wer e othermissionaries in attendance and we all took part in theteaching times, focusing on different areas. We are pleasedto be able to participate with other missionaries from allover th e country to try and encourage churches in th edifferent areas of the country that have different needs. This is one way we feel effective in reaching out to thedifferent population groups throughout the country.

Another gathering that we were a part of during thistime was the National Youth Seminar t ha t took place inBloemfontein. This gathering takes place just as the schoolslet out for the summer break. Itbrings youth from all overSouth Africafor a time ofencouragement and teaching andgives them concentratedteaching that isdeeper than usual. The theme this yearwas "Making the Right Choices" and itdealt with some of the more difficult choices that teenagershave to make here. Fran and I were given the topic

Fran taught the youth leaders at the National Youth Seminar.

"Choosing toAbstain fromSex untilManiageandSecondaryVirginity' (a heavy topic) and we hit it hard. South Africahas the highest number of cases of HIV/Aidsof any countryin the world and a lo t of it s tems from the cultural i deas ofthe different ethnic groups. Many people think that theyare expected to show that they can produce children beforeth ey can be considered for marriage and this leads to thelooseness of morals among th e kids. It is not uncommonfor youth to have several children before they ar e marriedo r even in their twent ies .

During the class we urged them to say no to thepressures of th e world and to live radically different lives. We were caught out by th e second part of th e title that wasgiven to us, but soon found out that this is how we had toapproach th e entire subject. When we would ge t to th epart of the lesson wherewe would transition and say, "Ok,you are probablypast th e first part of this lesson, and youare asking, 7 am way past that, so what do I do now7"',you could se e a lotofagreement on their faces. We wouldthen teach them the Importance that God forgives uswherewe ar e and He wilt help us make a change in our lives.Fran stressed how hard and difficult itwould be to say no,but that withGod's help, all things were possible. We gota lot of positive feedback and we hope and pray that weencouraged some of th e kids to evaluate their lives and tosee where they needed to change. We enjoyed being ableto help in the National Youth Seminar and feel that it wastime well spent.

The third trip Iwant to tell you about was a lot of funas It involved a surprise of sorts. I have not visited th echurch in Upington in several years for various reasons, but wanted to go and encourage the brethren there. Upingtonis about as far as we go in our travels as it is a long wayfrom anywhere in South Africa. It is located in the northwestern part of South Africa a t t he edge of th e Kalaharidesert and It is very hot in th e summer and very cold in th ewinter. Ihad planned to make this trip once this year but itgot cancelled until th e next month for various reasons.

I asked Andrew Calvert, the minister in George toplease go with me as the people there wanted to hear himalso. He is always a great encouragement to the peoplewherever he goes and Iasked him to go several months inadvance. As he knew that it would be a long hot trip hewas no t looking forward to th e travels but he did commit togo.

Unbeknown to him,as Iplanned the tripI had enoughfrequent flyer miles to ge t myself a f ree ticket and I thenpurchased a ticket for him to fly so we would not have todrive th e long hot trip. We had it se t up perfectly. Wepicked him up that morning at his house at 7 a.m. just as ifwe were getting ready to se t out on a 10 hour trip. As wemade a few "wrong" turns and wound up at the Georgeairport, he started to question what we were doing there. Iasked him if he would like to fly that day instead of driving. He replied, 'That would be th e day!" I knew he had neverflown in his life and I replied, "Well, today is the dayV Hestill did not believe it until I took his bags inside the airportand gave him his t icket. To watch him look ou t th e windowof the airplane as we flew was like watching a kid in acandy s tore . We flew the one hour to Cape Town and thencaughtanother flightto Upington which took 2 hours. WhileinUpington, we taught fromWednesday night untilSundayand then flew back to George on Monday. Some of theclasses did not get completed as Icame down with th e fluafter th e Friday class and could only continue again onSunday. All in all itwas a great weekend and one that Iwillno t forget.

Ihope these three trips show you th e different typesof work we ar e involved in. Our main focus is leadershiptraining and itis done through many avenues. Sometimeswe teach youth, sometimes men and ladies individually, but at all timeswe ar e teaching and encouraging the peoplewith the gospel and try to do it in a way to make their walkwith Jesus Christ even better than before. Thank-you foryour partnership in this venture.

In t e rnsh iDsAgain this year, we ar e having internships in June

and July. As far as we know, we will have about 15 studentscoming for th e time of VBSs and we ar e looking forward toth e time together. As our plans ar e now, we ar e going to tryto hold 3 Vacation Bible Schools with one being inKimberley, one in George and on e in Graaff-Reinet. Wewill also be involved in a camp with about 60 kids in PortElizabeth that we hope the interns will help with as itwouldbe a great encouragement for th e local youth.

Stacy Garner of Gateway Educational Sen/ices ofSt. Louis is heading up the internship again and as always,he has done a good job preparing. Please be in prayer fortheir travels to SouthAfrica, our travels while they ar e here, and for th e teaching times that will be an encouragementfor the churches th at w e visit.

We continue to t each the weekly Bible studies here inGeorge, visit and teach the church in Knysna once amonth, lead the youth program here inGeorge on a weeklybasis and travel to whe rev er we are called to sen /e . Wear e very busy this year and it seems that time fliesWe ar e always safety conscious as we travel. But inMarch, th e Lord protected us as we avoided a majormishap on a trip to Graaff-Reinet . En route as Fran wasdriving along th e barren stretches of road, a huge tortoise(and Imean huge ) crossed ou r path and she did notsee it until it was to o late to slow down. Ifwe ha d hit it,it would have been like hitting a boulder, (see picture)and it would have done major damage to both us and it.So to avoid it, she decided to swerve out of its way andgive it room. As there was no shoulder on th e road, when she hit the gravel beside the road the van startedto slide s ideways. Then when she got th e van back ontothe road, it started to fishtail before straightening out.We made it. It is t he c lo s es t that I have ever felt tobeing part of a van flipping without it happening. Needless to say we (especially Fran) were all shook up, butGod was faithful and He protected us. We arrived atGraaff-Reinet and took part in the meeting that we weregoing there for and were thankful that we got there safely. Thanks for praying for us as we travel.

Internship 2004In June and July we again had visitors from the U.S.

to come and help with th e yearly Vacation Bible Schools.Th is t im e we we re b le s se d to have 14 visitors under th edirection of Stacy Garner with Gateway EducationalServices based out of St. Louis, Missouri. This year sawan assortment of ages with some college students, somehigh school students and others. We were glad to haveeveryone who took time from their summer to come andhelp with the work here in South Africa.

Stacy arrived with them in Cape Town on th e 12"^ ofJune after th e long trip from St. Louis, Missouri and s incemost of the interns were here for only 3 weeks, we hit theground running. After arriving inCape Town, we took themto the services the next day at the church in Mfuieni inCape Town. This was the first experience for most of themin an African service and they even sang a special on amoment ' s notice fo r th e church there. This was the secondtime that Stacy had preached for th e church in Mfuieni, thefirst being in 1988 when he himself was an intern. After theservices, we took them to Cape Point so they could se esome scenery during their one full day in Cape Town.On Tuesday the we went to the town of Graaff-Reinet to start the first of the three 5-day Vacation Bible

Schools. The first day we had over 150 children inat tendance and over the five days in Graaff-Reinet, th enumbers grew until we topped 400 children on Friday. Theinterns came well prepared as they worked in teams toteach the lesson each day. They led the singing and helpedin the craft time also having come well prepared for thecraft times. Stacy had had them bring one suitcase ofclothing and the other was full of craft materials for th eVacation Bible Schools. A s usual, t he church in Graaff-Reinet made the visitors feel very we lcome. They ar ealways eager to have help in reaching their community forth e Lord and this year they supplied meals just about everynight and had the interns also involved in Bible Studies,th e weekly prayer meeting and th e Sunday services. Theweek went very well and everyone worked hard. After th eservices on Sunday we headed back to George.

Monday th e 21 saw the interns start the hardest ofth e three Vacation Bible Schools, in the African townshipofThembalethu here in George. The children there knewthat we were coming having enjoyed the Vacation BibleSchool last year. They had been asking when the VacationBible School was going to start and on th e first day th eattendance was already over 200 children. The second dayitwas over 400 and it stayed there for the rest of the week.We sa y that it is a hard week, because there was no local

help from the church. The peopleofthe church letus use the buildingfor the week, but there was no help with teaching or anything elseinvolved. The church that we mainlyworkwith inGeorge, the churchin Conville, came toThembalethu and helped everydayandwe reallyappreciate the way Andrew Calvert gathered the people together tohelp withthe project. Butthe kidsthere were wild!! In these townshipcommunities, there is very littlediscipline in the home and since thereis none at home, there is none anywhere else where the children areinvolved. One of the sad things that we see in the African culture isthe breakdown of the family. We are firm believers that the family isto be the backbone of society and when that breaks down, there areproblems. The children who attended did so faithfully, and soaked allof the attention in. We heard from people in the community severalstories ofwhere their children would come home fromschool, changetheir clothes as fast as they could and run to the Vacation BibleSchool.Itdoes our hearts good to know that they were learning of things thattheywould not have the opportunityto hear anywhere else. The internsremarked that they saw things in Thembalethu that they had neverseen before and they learned that there is a different side of the worldthat they had not been exposed to before. One thing that we enjoyabout internships is the ability to expose American college kids to aside of the world that they would never see othenwise. The childrenloved the attention of the interns and even after th e interns had goneback to the U.S., the children here still ask when they are comingback again. Once again. Itwas evident to us that both sides benefitfrom these internships.

One thing that we did differently this yearwas to have the internsdo some physical labor. Tosay thank-you tothe church at Thembalethufor letting us use the building, we painted the outside oftheir buildingfor them. We could see that there had not been any painting done inwellover 20 years. But with 14 peopre"painting, under the directionisrAndrewCalvert, itwas completed injust over 2 days. We have heardpeople in the community remark on what a difference itmade to havethe building looking nice again; itis wonderful what a coat of paint cando. So during the week of the 21', we accomplished two main goals,we had the Vacation Bible School that taught over 400 children andwe painted the church building that needed it so badly.

After gathering with th e Conville Youth Group on Saturday andtaking part in the services on Sunday in Conville, we again hit theroad on Monday. On Monday we went to Kimberley in the NorthernCape where the four-day Vacation BibleSchool would start on Tuesdaythe 29'^ This is the place where we had the largest meeting placewith the smallest number of people . We had arranged with the localminister, Roland Joseph for the building etc. and he did a great jobsetting it all up. We had over 200 kids each of th e four days, but wenever reached th e n um be rs th at w e had in the o the r tw o locat ions.Again, the interns did a superb job ofteaching the lessons and leadingthe kids and the week was a great success. Kimberley is a veryhistorical town that is good for th e interns to see and while there theylearned areas of South African history.

Itwas sad to see, but 11 of ou r visitors left us in Kimberley andheaded back to the U.S. Those who stayed for the three weeks did agreat job and we will never forget you. Thanks Stacy for bringing all ofthe peoplewithyou and we appreciate allof your hard work in organizingeverything s ta tes ide. We would also like to say thanks to Connie,Deb, NIkomas, Jessica, Bobby, Hillary, Chris, Alex, Leah, and Dan fortaking three weeks of your summer to come on a long journey toshare the story of our Lord to children that will forever be changed.Fran, Denzil and I sa y thank-you for coming to South Africa and mayGod bless you in the future.

Jake Smith preached for the church in Graaff-Reinet while hevisited there. For many who preach on the internships itis theirfirst experience of preaching and they improve with every try.As is seen here, they work with a translator.

2004 Youth C am iAfter th e first eleven of our visitors headed back to

the U.S. the remaining three, Jake Smith, Chris Smith andNicole Dill stayed behind to accompany us to the youthcamp that was held in Port Elizabeth. This camp is threeyears old and is meeting a need for the youth that had notbeen met before. The church youth group inGraaff-Reinetunder the direction of f\/1axv/ell Cudjoe together with Philand Roxana Smith started the camp two years ago andhave done a great job organizing it. The Smiths were onfurlough this year and we helped Maxwell with theorganization. The theme that we worked with this yearwas "Social Challenges Facinga Christian in Today's World'and it went well. We had three main t eacher s, and thethree remaining interns helped withthe morning devotions, the crafts and everywhere else that they could fit in. Theywere very well accepted and they fit in well.

Fran did some crafts for the campers one day andeach camper got to t ake the crafts home after th e week.As is usual at these camps, the singing is out of this worldand all of the kids try their best to fit into everything that isdone. The kids were in a loving environment, one thatmany of th em do not see a t home.

One of th e highlights of the week is th e BibleCompetition that this year was won by the youth group inGeorge. They beat another church youth group ina playoffand carried the trophy home for the year. Another trophy isalso given, not to the camper of the week, but to the youthgroup of the week. This year, George made it a cleansweep as they took that one home to George also. Wewere very proud of the youth group from George and theyshowed Christlikeness in everything that they did thatweek.

Plans are underway for the camp next year. Pleasebe in prayer with us as we seek a more central meetingplace so that the churches from Cape Town etc., do nothave to drive so far to attend. The camp is a great effortand we were pleased with its success.

Denzil with two of his church fr iends in George (from Left) -Conley and Emile Calvert.

EiSL*During the Easterweekend inApril,we attended servicesin Windsorton outside of Kimberley. Fran and I bothtaught classes on Saturday and Sunday and we metwith the area churches that came together for th eweekend .

*1 taught four days of classes for Cape Bible Seminary inGraaff-Reinet inMay. This group loves to come togetherfor classes and they are very faithful with Bible Studiesand they are a joy to work with.

*Fran and Ihave both spoke for the morning chapel timesa t Denzi l 's school. He at tends a Christ ian school withabout 75 s tudent s and they start t he week with chapelevery Monday.

*We are stillteaching at the church inKnysnaonce a month. It is a small congregation that are very faithful and it takesu s abou t an hour to ge t there. It is well worth the trip.

*lnApril Idid a wedding inWorcester (about 4 hours driveaway) and itwas one of the most beautiful weddings thatI have been a part of in South Africa. The bride andgroom are both college educated and have planned theirlife together in a way that should be an example to otherpeople in the churches here.

Denzil has again made honor roll every term in schooland we are really proud of him. School work is a chorebu t for what 10-year-old is it not? He has done reallywell.

*We again ran into trouble securing more transportation forth e interns while they were here. We had our van availablebut with 14 people we needed more help. After askingeveryone that we knew for help and getting many "no"answers we again turned to the people that helped us sokindly three years ago. We had hoped to not ask themagain because they were so kind at that time, bu t withtwo days to spare, we told them of ou r situation and theyagain helped us in a mighty way. We do not even reallyknow t hem but know them through other people. Godprovided with their kindness. We have toyed with th e

2004 Preach ina and Teach ina Confe renceWhen we first arrived in SouthAfrica to live and work,

we were told by veteran missionaryAlZimmerman that theyearly preaching and teaching conference is the highlightof t he yea r for many of the Christians that we work with.He told us tha t to impress upon us how much the peoplesave, work, and look forward to the annual gathering. Ihave learned over the years that there is a lot of truth in hiswords and itwas proven again this year as over 300 peoplecame together from the 29'^ of September until th e 3"^ ofOctober in Mfuleni in Cape Town. The local church did asterling job with local preparations and had everything inplace when we all arrived to s ta rt the gathering on thatWednesday night.

The theme this year was "Equipping the Saintst tie Art of Teaching." All classes , sermons and lessonsrevolved around and developed the theme. During theconference, we usually have a couple of worship sen/icesa day and then assorted classes for men, women, and fourdifferent ages of youth. This year we tried somethingdifferent in tha t we divided both men and women and hadmore specialized classes. Instead of just having a men'sclass, we had a men 's c la ss plus a c lass des ignedespecially for elders and a class designed especially fordeacons. Instead of having just a women's class, we alsohad one session just for Sunday School teachers. Wewere apprehensive as to what might be the success ofsuch a trial but by all accounts itwent very well. We had ameeting at the end of t he week and most people said thatthey liked the arrangements and they wanted to see itagainnext year. So we will have more classes next year withmore specialized emphasis.

One of the highlights this year's gathering was thetwo visi tors we had from Highland Meadows ChristianChurch in Colleyville, Texas. Drew Sherman, HighlandMeadows' minister and Pat Peters, (the head of the church'sglobal outreach council) flew inon Tuesday the 28'^^ and weput them to work every day during the conference. Drewpreached on Wednesday evening at the opening session,Friday morning at the youth session and taught three

c la sses to t he e ld er s. Pattaught classes to the deaconsafternoons and by all -iS- VlHBaccoun t s b o th o f t h e ir c las ses Awere very well received. Onduring the Sunday morningworship service, th e localchurch presented them withgifts tosay thanksforcoming, ters from Highland Meadowsand since itwas a book of th e Christian Church in Colley-sceneryofCapeTown, itwas Texas.also to encourage them to come back sometime. Afterworking very hard during the week, they flew out of CapeTown on Sunday evening arriving back inTexas on Mondayafternoon. Thanks, Pa t and Drew for coming an d helpingwith th e conference and for encouraging us in the workhere.

As for our participation, Fran taught a ladies classand some Sunday School classes while Ipreached for theyouth worship on th e first day. Other missionaries inattendance to help with the teaching every day were Ronand Carolyn Butler, Phil and Roxana Smith, Jerry andAletaKennedy and Steve Zimmerman came and preached tothe adults and taught a class on Friday. They, along withmany of th e local brothers and sisters, took turns in teachingand preaching for th e various groups.

Allin all, itwas a good week. Between 350 and 400people were in attendance from places such as Kimberley,Upington, Port Elizabeth, Graaff-Reinet, George and CapeTown. They all made a great effort to be in attendance andI feel they were encouraged by the gathering during theweek. We are hoping that all people in attendance will takewhatthey learned about teaching the word ofGod and applyitto their local congregations when they ge t home. Thanksfor your prayers for th e gathering and please be in prayerfor next year's gathering as we have no t ye t determinedwhere it will be held .

    2004 Sou th AfricanMissionarv Gatherim

From the 2"^ to the 6"^ of August we were in PortShepstone inthe KwaZulu Natal for our annual gatheringof South African missionaries. We do not see a lo t of ourco-workers during the year except for this one time everyyear. This year itwas a two-day drive for us and we wereglad to be able to participate in this time of rest and relaxa ti on . K en and Romona Goble from Atlanta Christian College, {the speakers that we had tried to arrange for lastyear's retreat) were able to come and share with us for thefour days of meetings and they did well. In the afternoonswe did some sightseeing and go t to spend timefellowshipping with one another. We had not been to thatpart of the country in a long time and it was good to seeother parts of South Africathat are far away from George.Next year the gathering will again be here in George andwe have already gotten the dates , and the speakers confirmed. Itwillbeheld at the same place inGeorge that wewere able to gather in2003. We look forward to this time ofrenewal every year and we are glad to be able to participate.

*After theTnajority of our interns left the first week of July,we had tw o left fo r four more weeks . Jake Smith andChris Smith took part inthe workthat we doon a regularbasiswhile theywere here for their extended time. Theytaught the Bible studies and youth in George andpreached for the Sunday services both inGeorge andKnysna. They even accompanied me on a tripto Graaff-Reinet for a wedding that we had to do in July for acouple Inthe church there. Theywere a big help in thework here a nd a re still remembered fo r various reasons.Chris flew back home on the 31 of July.

The second to the last one to leave {onthe 30'^)actuallyleftGeorge and went to Mozambique for a month beforeheading back to the U.S. Jake Smith spent a month inMozambique before flyingback to Cape Townto catcha flight back to the U.S. on September 1.
