    GEORGE, SOUTH AFRICA

    cfTfieJ-auahren^Pete, Fran & DenzilFurlough Begins

Greetings from furlough in th e U.S.!! We ar e glad tobe back stateside as it is always good to be back with familyand friends after a four-year term. We left South Africaon November 29, 2006 and, after spending several daystraveling and seeing parts of the world not before seen by us,we arrived in Texas on December 11. We spent Christmaswith Fran's familyinTexas (her mother and father, her brotherJonathan and wife Teri) and we were glad to have her sisterand brother-in-law (Dale and Sonja Hawkins) from Missourialso with us there. The only on e of her family who wasnot able to be with us was her s is ter and family who are inSoutheastAsia. Itwas good to spend time with the Hamiltonsduring th e Christmas season.

After celebrating Christmas in Texas , we went on toGeorgia on December 28th as Georgia is our home base fortraveling through the furlough year. Usually, most things ar ese t in place as to housing etc., before our arrival but this yearwas different. We did not know where we would be stayingand we had nothing se t up before our arrival inGeorgia. ButGod isfaithful and, within a couple of weeks, everythingwasworked out. The kindpeople at McDonough Christian ChurchinMcDonough, Georgia, have really come through and takenus under their wing this year as they helped inmany differentways. Amember of the church donated a car several yearsago for missionaries to use on furlough and we are using th e1999 Chrysler Grand Voyager for our travels this year. ScottGregory, the missions minister of the church, and the missionboard of the church let us use a cell phone as our main phoneand they also helped inarranging some furniture forthe houset ha t w e have been able t o r en t. We were able to rent a house

Fort Worth Stockyards with family.from the minister of the church, Paul Leslie. Paul and Mary,we can never thank-you enough. The house is absolutelyperfect Inevery way; itis ideally situated to the interstate fortraveling and is a real God-send. Our housing prayers wereanswered within a week of arriving in Georgia. Last, butnot least, we were able to use some furni ture given to us byour fonwarding agents, Mark and Annette Tuttle, who weremoving to Ohio at the same time as we were getting settled. We say thanks to everyone who has helped us get settledfor this year of furlough and the transition has gone well.

Our physical address for the year is: 1723 Hwy. 81W., McDonough GA, 30253. Our postal address is P. 0.Box 206, Hampton GA, 30228 and our telephone numberfor the year is: 678-697-3719. Feel free to contact us in anyof those three ways. Our plans are to return to the field inJanuary of 2008, Lord willing.

Furlough Travels BeginWe often talk to fellow missionaries, who, when

speaking of furlough, look on th e time with disdain. Maybewe are not normal (?), but we always look forward to furlough

even with all ofthe traveling. Iwas remarking the other daythat there are fewother types ofworkwhere our 12-year-oldson, Denzil, could be exposed to so manydifferenttypes ofevents and places at such a young age. Since our supportingchurches are far and wide, our travels take us to places thatare far and wide. We have a supporting church inTexas, oneinMississippi, several inGeorgia and Tennessee and then wealso have them in Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania. So,you see, our travels take us to varied locations. Our goal isto spend at least one full Sundaywitheach supporting churchso we can spend quality time with them, and thank them inperson for their help over the last term. Our firsttrip ofthis furlough took us to Chatham HeightsChristian Church inMartinsville, Virginia, for the weekend ofJanuary 28. We enjoyed the time with the folks as we spokefor their faith promise rally. Edna Cannaday was a gracioushost for the night that we spent there and we enjoyed seeingthe people again. We spoke for the Sunday School and forthe morning service and then left in the afternoon. We spentSunday night in Rock Hill, South Carolina, with good friends,Ed and Jane Phillips, and then went back to our home inGeorgia on the 29th.

The weekends of the 4th and 11th of February sawus staying locally and spending time with local supporters inGeorgia. We attended McDonough Christian Church and theBrowns MillsChurch inCumming, Georgia. On the weekendof the 18th, we spoke for the yearly faith promise at BereaChristian Church in Hampton, Georgia. We consider thisour home church on furlough, and it is always a pleasure tobe with them. Jeff Jones and his miss ions committee did agreat job of setting up the day. It Vs always tough to preachat your home church, but the day went great . Thank-you,Berea, for the great day!

We leftGeorgia on the 22nd and headed north to Illinois. We spent the weekend of the 25th with Don and ClaudiaDorris inMt. Vernon, Illinois, and spoke for the Sunday Schoolof Long Prairie Christian Church inWoodlawn, Illinois. Itwasgood to see the peop le the re . That afternoon, we headedwest to Bethel, Missouri, to spend the next three nights withFran's sister and husband. Dale and Sonja Hawkins. We leftthere on the 28th and went to St. Louis to spend two nightswith Stacy Garner and his family. As you might remember,Stacy heads up Gateway Educational Services and he leadsthe internships when he comes to South Africa. Hewas verykind on this visit to arrange a reunion of sorts with interns

Denzil on the Hawkins' Family Farm.

over the last ten year s. We had great attendance and sawa lotof old friends from internships. Thanks, Stacy, so muchfor arranging this gathering as it did our hearts good to se eso many people . And thanks to all of you who attended, itwas great to see you.On March 2, we had to put Denzil on a flight by himselfto go back to Atlanta to be part of a middle school trip withthe McDonough Christian Church youth group. He got therewithan hour to spare as he met the bus at an interchange andgot on and went back to Tennessee for the weekend with theyouth. Fran and Idrove on to Amory, Mississippi, to be partof their faith promise weekend on the 4th. We stayed withJ.T and DotThornton, as usual, and enjoyed their hospitalityand really enjoyed the weekend with folks in Mississippi. After speaking there, we headed back to Georgia on the 5th.But here is where the traveling got trickyRight before we left on the trip to Illinois, Missouri, and Mississippi, Fran lost her front tooth. (I told her it wasok, it would help in raising support....she was not amused.)Between Mississippi and Birmingham, Alabama, I got theidea to ge t her a plane ticket out of Birmingham (tickets arecheaper out of there than Atlanta) to fly to Texas to see ourdentist there, plus she would be inTexas for two other things. She would be inTexas for her mother's 70th birthday and sh ewould also be there during her brother Jonathan's surgery tohave his iliostomy reversed (a procedure that resulted fromhis cancer of a year ago). Iwould take care of the speakingengagements that we had planned while sh e was gone.I arrived back in Georgia on the 5th and spoke at achurch in McDonough, Georgia, at the request of long timefriend Bonnie Hunt. I spoke for their Wednesday eveningservice and enjoyed th e renewal of friendships with she andher s ister , Connie.

On the 11th of March, the Georgia Missionary Rallystar ted and, while it is a week-long program, th e committeesends us around the state of Georgia representing th e rallyin area churches before the rally proper starts during Friday,Saturday, and Sunday of that week at Southwest ChristianChurch. On the 11th, Denzil and I went to DouglasvilleChristian Church in Douglasville, Georgia, and we spoke forthe Sunday School hour and for the morning service. Thisis one of our long-time supporting churches and we wereglad to renew acquaintances with the membership there.OnWednesday evening, Denzil and Itraveled toAdairsville,Georgia, and spoke at the First Christian Church. We had

    Former Interns Group

a very good reception and enjoyed the people there. On theweekend of the rally, March 18, I spoke atAustell ChristianChurch in Austell, Georgia, for both Sunday School andchurch again and enjoyed the fellowship with Clay andBrenda Henry, friends for a long time through other churches. That evening I spoke for the main rally at Southwest to closethe rally week and I feel that it all went pretty well. It wasa very busy, but productive week. Thanks must go to thecommittee for including us on the program for this year andwe look forward to doing it again if possible. On the 21st of March, Denzil and 1went to McDonoughChristian Church and spoke to the elementary youth meetingto just tell them the bas ics of being a missionary and weexposed them to some SouthAfrican games that the childrenplay there. Julie Weaver, of McDonough Christian Church,se t the time up for us and we enjoyed being with the kids.On the morning of the 22nd Denzil and I hit the roadnorth to Ohio (he has become quite the navigator for his dad)and we drove to Granville, Ohio, where our fonwardingagentsMark and Annette Tuttle now live. While we were in Ohio, 1spoke at Eastpointe Christian Church just outside Columbuson the 25th. We were glad to be able to share with them astheir minister and wife, Brian and Pam Leonard, had come toSouth Africa in2005. Although they were away inMexico ona mission trip, we did see many old friends. We will be goingback t he re in November to share th e work of South Africa.

Iwrote earlier that the beginning of March is where thetraveling got "tricky." You may have noticed that Denzil and1did a lot of traveling and speaking alone in March. WhileFran did get her dental work done inTexas and her brother didhave surgery, things did not go as planned with the surgery.Fran was supposed to be home with us on the 16th, but wechanged itto the 23rd, then the 27th and then finally toApril7th. Jonathan's surgery did not go as well as planned andto make a long story short, after complications with the firstsurgery, the doctors had to operate again on the 22nd. Whileoperating to stop his internal bleeding, the doctors informedthe familythat they just about lost himon the operating table. He was then put into a drug induced coma, put into ICU andthe outcome looked bleak. We had people praying all overthe world and we are very thankful to say that he has comeout of the coma, is back to recovering at home, and throughthe graciousness of our Lord, he is still with us.

Denzil witha koala at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney.

Denzil and I got the word from Fran while we werein Ohio that things were not looking good for Jonathan,so we changed our plans of going back to Georgia on the26th and instead, after the services in Ohio on th e 25th, weheaded west to Dallas to be with the family. We drove the1100 miles arriving in Texas on Tuesday morning the 27thto help where we could. We spent the week with the family, attended Highland Meadows Christian Church inColleyville,Texas, on the 1st of April and then Denzil and Idrove backto Georgia, arriving in April 3. Fran followed us back toGeorgia on the 7th.Is it any wonder that we jokingly call our furlough "TheAmazing Race?'

As you can see, furlough is busy, but we can honestlysa y that we enjoy it. We have only just begun this year oftraveling with many other places to go. We look fonward toseeing you in our travels and ifwe can come see you andpresent the work please be in contact with us. We wouldlove to share what God is doing in South Africa.

Etc .* When we left South Africa, we left ou r ca r with a leaderof the youth group who has been trying to save to buy a

new car. Itwill help him in his work.' In t raveling back to the U.S., we spent 6 nights in Sydney

and 5 nights in Los Angeles. While In Los Angeles, Frangot to be part of th e audience for a taping of "The Price isRight" but did not get the call to "Come on Downf

    * Denzil passed grade 6 withstraightA's and is doing grade7 as we travel.

    * We did a wedding for a young couple in South Africa 10days before we left and we were glad to be part of theceremony ofthis fine Christian couple. They are doing well.* Stacy Garner is again leading an internship to SouthAfricathis year. They will be in Graaff-Reinet, Kimberley, and

East London helping in VBSs and camps.* We are very thankful for Eric Hoover of McDonoughChristian Church for helping us in all of our promotionalmaterial this year. Eric, you are very great!!

VBSs, Churches and Camp - Furlough ContinuesGreetings once aga in from t he roads of furlough.

April, May and June were once again full of travels andvisits with supporters of the work in South Africa. Sixmonths through furlough, we have enjoyed our timestateside; we are and the plan is to return back home toSouthAfrica in January. Please pray for us as we continueto travel.

One of the things thatwe ge t to do during our furloughis speak about the work in South Africa at VBSs. Thisfurlough has seen us do a few of these and we enjoyedthem very much. We have been involved in VBSs inJacksonville, Florida, Jonesborough, Tennessee, Tucker,Georgia and Newnan, Georgia. We were well receivedin all of these and it was great to renew acquaintancesin these places. They all ranged in attendance from 18to 250, and itwas time well spent. The longest distancethat we had to t ravel be tween VBSs was when the VBS inJacksonville ended on a Friday and the one inTennesseestarted on Monday. Thanks to all of you who haveentertained us and thanks for your interest in the workof the Lord in South Africa. Thanks must also go Berea

We had a great time at EnglewoodChristian Church in Jacksonvi l le , F lorida , for VBS. Here we see Denzil with the director, Patrice Bowser, her daughter, and a special guest.

Christian Church inHampton, Georgia, and First ChristianChurch inAdairsville, Georgia, who did a VBS for us whilewe were in other places.

Also during April, Mayand June, we spoke at severalchurches concerning the work. We spent the entiremonth of May with Highland Meadows Christian ChurchinColleyville, Texas, and we were able to share with smallgroups and Sunday School classes who were interested.During these months we also spoke in Newnan, Georgia,Mountain City,Tennessee, Jonesborough, Tennessee, andin Tucker, Georgia. We enjoyed spending this t ime with

our supporting churches and it was great to see them.We hope to see the rest of the churches before we headhome in January.

Lastly,we were involved withcamps for two weeks. Both of these camps were at Woodland Christian Campin Temple, Georgia, and with the younger age groups. We found out that we are not as young as we used to be!When asking the camperswho was over a certain age, wefound we were the oldest there by 18 years! Iam glad thatDenzil still keeps us young! Thankyou Claire and Betsyfor asking us to be at the camp. We had a great time.

As you can see, we have been on the road most ofthe time. From the first of May to the first ofJuly we spenta total of 3 nights in Georgia. We enjoy furlough, and itis great to report about the work in South Africa. Pleasepray for us as we continue for the next six months. Welook fonward to seeing you in our travels.

started asking questions and making precious commentsabout their feelings.

Itwasn't until the following day we found out howtouched and sincere these two boys were. Carter hadgone home and informed his family he wanted to dosomething for the children in S.A. The following day, before V.B.S. he sold lemonade in his front yard, feelingthe heat of the Florida sun, but knowing he was doingsomething to make a difference. Marcus went home andinformed his parents that he wanted to give his savings.Marcus' mom informed us that he had been saving coinsin a big jar for three years.. .this was his "lifesavings" hewas giving. This was a jar that had some of the mostprecious things to him (his treasure chest) . He insis tedon giving it all, he wanted to make a difference.

Austin is a teenager from Tennessee who alsowanted to make a d if fe re nc e. He wa tch ed t he DVD andl istened to our speech about the work we are a part of inS.A. during the Sunday School hour. Itwas whilewe wereenjoying the cookout after the morning service thatAustinwalked up to us with his mom, holding a package. Austinhad gone out immediately after church, got the moneythat he has been saving to buy a musical instrument thathe has been wanting, and bought some school suppliesfo r us to take to some children in S.A.

These young boys know what it is to sacrifice, togive, to serve and to have a heart for th e lost. These youngboys taught adults about what it is to put the Kingdomfirst. These young hearts moved and touched our heartsand many others. I know they will be blessed In theirgiving. 1pray that they will never lose heart for the lost. These young boys (along withmany others) are making adifference for the Kingdom by their love for God and theirgiving to the chi ldren in S.A. i t's not about us.

Vacation Bible School or Holiday Bible School,it doesn't matter what we call it . . . both are importantprograms that take pl ace all over the world making adifference in the lives and hearts of many children. It's

    A family photo on Denzil's 13th birthday.

all about hearts being given to Jesus and being given theopportunity to make a difference for the Kingdom.Thank you, to all of you, for all the ways you openyour hearts to us and the work going on in South Africa.

God is praised and glorified!Mayyou see the blessings inserving a mighty, theonly and true God!

With th e love of Jesus,Fran

We are continuing with Denzil's home schooling thisyear and he is still making stra ight A's. He turned 13on J u n e 29 .

We got word from the young man that is driving our carin South Africa that he was involved in an accident. Thecar was not damaged too bad, and we are pleased thathe was not injured.Fran's folks, A1 and Annette Hamilton, ar e celebratingtheir 50th anniversary this year and we ar e gathering asa family in Texas the last week of August to help themcelebrate .

Denzil got to go to camp twice, once whilewe were thereworking, and then once with th e McDonough ChristianChurch youth group. He has blended in well.Stacy Garner of Gateway Educational services took agroup of interns to South Africa in June and July anddid a VBS, camp and revivals in Graaff-Reinet andKimberley. He reports that the people there are doinggreat. We were glad to hear a first hand report fromth e brothers and s i st e rs back home.

We celebrated Denzil 's 13th birthday in Georgia with hi sgrandparents, cousins, and Aunt and Uncle.

Furlough Travels -- July to September 2007As we wrote in ou r last newsletter, we are on

the road quite a bit during our time in the U.S. But weknow that it goes with the territory and we enjoy andsee things that the average person would not. As youwiil see by the enclosed pictures, we have covered alot of states during our travels.

July started out with us being in camp inGeorgiaand it ended with us being on the start of a fiveweek tripthat took us throughCanada and points west. We leftonthe 27th of July and in the next fiveweeks we covered6100 miles. On our way north, we spoke at the DerrsChristian Church in Derrs, Pennsylvania, and thankedthe people there for their sponsoring of Sunday Schoolmaterials in 2006. Leaving there on Monday we spentthe next two weeks in Canada, visiting relatives fromMontreal to Toronto. Itwas great to see everybody andto catch up on all of the family news. While inCanadawe were ab le to sha re the work of South Africa withthe church that my mother grew up in, the ShawvilleWesleyan Church in Shawville, Quebec.

Heading back into the U.S., we spoke at TwinTiers Christian Church in Painted Pos t, New York. Wehad a great time there and were very warmly receivedby one and all. Later in August, we spoke at FergusonChristian Church in Ferguson, Missouri, and a had agood visit with Stacy Garner . If you remember, StacyworkswithGateway Educational Services and heads upthe internships every year to South Africa. We ar e verythankful for him and his work. We are looking forwardto his return to South Africa next year with anotherinternship, if you are interested, please contact us aswe would love to have you come visit.

In our travels, we made a stop in Granville,Ohio, to spend some time with our fonwarding agents,Mark and Annette Tuttle. While there I accompaniedMark to Johnson City, Tennessee, as he took his son.

Jonathan, back to college there. Itwas a good timeto have some quality time with a good friend. Thanks,Mark, so much.During th e five week trip we also visited friendsand relatives in Mt. Vernon, Illinois; Sheridan andIndianapolis, Indiana; Stillwater, Oklahoma; andJackson, Mississippi. After five weeks, we got homeon September 2. During September we had somepersonal time in travels and we are thankful for all ofthe people that made those relaxing trips possible.

Our plans for the rest of furlough are much of thesame -- traveling to speak about the work and reportingto supporters. We will be gone most of November, andour plans are to leave Georgia for South Africa at theend of January. Please continue to pray for us as wemake our plans for the rest of furlough. We lookfon/vardto seeing you in our travels.
