Plans are good in theory. Menu plans help us to organise shopping lists, diaries which

contain the upcoming events of the week help us to organise where we must be at

the what time. Getting the breaks fixed on our cars and taking animals to the vet are

just some of the life appointments that can make our days and weeks different to

what we planned in the beginning.

Planning to spend time with God can be problematic too! With the best of intentions,

we plan to attend church on a Sunday, set the alarm early to pray at the beginning of

the day, plan to read the bible before we sleep.

Then life happens. Sunday morning can we can end up helping a friend with their gar-

den, the early morning alarm is ignored because children needed help with their

homework till late the night before and reading can be beyond us after a busy day

making sure that people were not without transport, food, a listening ear or someone

to pray with.

So many times, I have made plans. So many times, I have ended up in different places,

with different realities to what I had planned, and yet plans are important. They help

us to provide a focus for where we are going. They help to define who we are by

refining our priorities, and sometimes they run smoothly.

For all the days that I don’t have a life that runs to plan, usually there are different

opportunities and moments presented that are irreplaceable, or life changing. For all

the days that life goes according to plan there is a sense of accomplishment and secu-

rity. It takes a mix of all things to live an authentic life.

To plan is to think about; to make a proposal a decision or even to design. To plant is

to encourage a living organism, a place of manufacture, to set in place and to allow to

grow. Living a full and real life is to both plan and plant. We are asked to plant the

seed of faith to grow in others, we are asked to be the vine, we are asked to be

stewards of the planet, but this is impossible if we don’t plan it!

Life is a series of plans with the aim to encourage living and through the hopes and

dreams of our plans to allow us to grow. God’s plan for us, was to love us, and

encourage us to grow in love.

t Social Justice Oct. 2017 by Ian R Farquhar

Those readers who have shared in the lection for the Season of

Creation and those who have followed privately will be aware that

this season of the church calendar terminates on Oct. 3, St. Francis

Day. On this day we are reminded of the remarkable life of Giovanni

di Pietro di Bernadone, called by his father and the rest of the world

too, Francesco, ‘the Frenchman’. In Assisi, Umbria in 1181 Francis

was born to Pica de Bourtemont, wife of Pietro Bernadone. Pica

named him Giovanni (John) but when his Dad returned from a

business trip in France, he took to calling him Francesco. We

commemorate the date of his death on Oct 3 1226, at just 45. What

a life was fitted into those few years!

Pietro was a well-to-do silk merchant, his family enjoyed the

privileges afforded by his fathers’ business success. Thus it was that

Francesco rather wasted his youth, not much inclined to scholarship

he left school at 14 and despite the best efforts of Pietro to steer him

into the trade, lived a dissolute youth. With a vision of becoming a

knight, the elite of the military in those times, Francis joined the

local military but in battle was taken prisoner and kept for 12

months awaiting appeals to Pietro to pay his ransom. Subsequently

his health was quite poorly for some time.

During this period Francis experience a spiritual awakening which

was almost Pauline in dramatic nature.

Water Aid Australia (WAA) recently published their annual report; this can be

easily accessed on the inter-net. Water Aid is an international organisation with a

mission to transform the lives of the poorest marginalised people by improving

access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Internationally Water Aid has teams in over 30 countries with Australia having

responsibility in Cambodia, Mozambique, Myanmar, Papua N.G., and Solomon Is.

& Timor-Leste.

WAA has a budget of $12 million with contributions from DFAT (25%), Water Aid

UK (9%), other grants & income (9%), fund raising from corporate sponsors (47%)

& member fund raising (9%). This includes $555 from the community at

Launceston North Uniting. This may seem to be little to matter, but the weekly

petty cash from the purses of LNUC worshipers means that this year one more

family in a poor community has clean water and less sickness, one more girl can

go to school instead of having to carry water. These are huge changes for that

family. We shall have enough for 0ne more family this next year. This is part of

Jesus’ work to make the world new.

Lorna would like to thank everyone for their

continued contribution of providing stamps for

ongoing missional use.

These can be left in the Pilgrim office with either

John or Annetia (on Fridays) to save you that

difficult trip up the stairs to the presbytery office.

World Community Day Service:

Australian Church Women will hold their annual World Community Day service on

Monday 29th October, 1.30pm at the Frederick St. Chapel of Launceston City

Mission.

A very special reason for the service is to dedicate the coins prayerfully gathered

over the year.

Fellowship over a cuppa after the service.

All Ladies and Gentlemen are welcome.

Do you have a heart for outreach, particularly in the northern suburbs?

If you do, an offer is being made by City Mission to help out in the Rocherlea area

with their Twilight Teas. These are held at the Northern Suburbs Community

Centre in Blackwood Drive each second Monday of the month between 4:30 and

5:30pm.

The Twilight Teas are a casual affair where up to 20 local residents come together

to enjoy a very simple meal and some fellowship together. The tea provides

opportunities to get to know local residents who suffer from the effects of poverty,

provide company and friendship, and, of course, a meal for their tummies!

These events could well open up opportunities to promote our own church

programs, and encourage individuals to attend.

The dates for this coming month are:

Monday 8th October

Monday 22nd October

It just so happens that the timing of the Twilight

Teas is immediately before our monthly Church

Council meetings. If anyone would like to go along, please contact either the office

on 6326 5928, or Brian directly on 0429 852 227.

Other worthwhile activities include the Torrens Street (Mayfield) gathering

between 2:30—4:30pm every 1st and 2nd Wednesday (except school holidays).

Futures dates are: Not In October due to School Holidays

Rocherlea outreaches are held on the 1st and 2nd Thursday of each month held at

Ti Tree Park between 3:00—5:00pm.

Future dates are: 4th October, 11th October

Reminder --- Have you paid your

$10 registration fee?

Hello from Crossroads North,

We have just had our gardening program on the 18th of September where many

plants were potted and taken home to be looked after thank you to Daniela for

making some plant sticks to brighten up our pots and be written on with the

person’s name or the plant name. .

We are coming up the busy end of the year, with lots of exciting events to

attend. As you have probably heard, if your are a regular reader of the

Launceston News, we are turning 25 on October the 16th and off to the St

Leonard’s Inn for our celebrations. We have decided not to have a set menu this

year as we do not want to have anybody miss out, if a set price will prevent

them from coming. So we have the whole pick of the menu so we can buy

within our budgets. There will be a Raffle to help raise some funds for our

activity next year, and of course a Birthday cake.

On November 10th we are off to the village of lower Crack pot for the State

annual picnic a day trip with the rest of our friends from around the State.

When we went to our holiday weekend earlier on this year we had booked in to

go there for the afternoon but mother nature had other ideas and we ended up

going to the movies instead. So fingers crossed the weather will be kind this

time.

Then we have a BINGO game on also in November on the 20th with some small

prizes up for grabs. Come along and have some shared tea with us and have

some fun.

Our final event for the year is our combined Christmas celebration with our

friends at south, which will be held on the 4th of December. At this time we do

not know where we are going but rest assured Santa will find us and be there to

hand out presents. More information about this event will be available probably

in the next newsletter, as soon as I know where we are going I will let you know.

If you would like to come along to any of our events it would be lovely to see you.

Please ring Carolyn on 0407 843 715 to let us know you would like to attend.

Please note a definite booking will be required for our State Annual picnic and

Christmas party for catering purposes.

Our Vision and Mission Principles

The vision of our church

is the story we are called

to live within our changing world.

It articulates our passion, our collec-

tive inspiration and our joy as people

shaping our lives by the story of God

among us. We seek to be accessible

to all who are interested in Christ and

all who identify with our values.

Our Mission Principles seek to capture

God’s ongoing story of love, grace,

and mercy known to us through Jesus

Christ. They mark how we will

respond as life-giving communities of

faithful people.
