Air New Zealand has announced a restructure of its sales team as the carrier moves to meet the changing and more competitive market—including a vital new trade-facing role.“In order to achieve our growth am-bitions from the New Zealand market into the future, we need to re-define the way we currently operate and the way in which the distribution, gov-ernment and corporate sales func-

tion is structured in the New Zealand region,” says Leanne Geraghty, NZ’s regional general manager distribu-tion, corporate and government. “The environment we are currently operat-ing in has changed significantly and is becoming increasingly competi-tive. We therefore need to ensure we are structured in a manner to ef-fectively compete, optimise our own performance and retain our position as the market-leading carrier within New Zealand.”As a result the new-look structure will see five direct reports sit under Geraghty, including the key, newly-created senior manager distribution role. This distribution role will be funda-mental in ensuring an effective and streamlined strategy is deployed across our trade partners, with a particular emphasis on heightening trade engagement throughout the region, adds Geraghty.Other new positions include a man-ager business performance and manager South Island. Meanwhile, Deborah Gyde will continue as senior manager corporate and SME; and Brydie Hill stays on in the senior manager government role, both re-porting to Geraghty.Applications have opened for the new roles and Geraghty says the carrier is working quickly to fill a number of new positions as a result of the change in structure.

Fiji Roadshow WinnersTravel Directors Tauranga’s Jody Sinkinson and You Travel Ferrymead’s Rosie Still are the two major prize winners of Tourism Fiji’s Roadshow. Sinkinson has won two nights at Trop-ica Island Resort and three nights at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort; whilst Still has won three nights at Yatule Resort and Spa and a four-night Blue Lagoon Cruise. Both are able to travel with a companion and will fly to Fiji with Fiji Airways.

Cable Car RescueA rescue operation is underway at Mont Blanc’s Vallee Blanche Cable Car after a ride between two mountain peaks came to a halt. AP reports that helicopters managed to rescue 50 people before night fell, but that 60 people are stuck inside and facing an overnight stay. Rescue workers have delivered blan-kets and food to those inside the cars and will stay with them overnight.

No In-flight Charging The Qantas Group, including Jetstar, has placed a ban on passengers who want to charge their new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices in-flight due to fears that the devices might catch on fire. Passengers may use the phones but not charge them in-flight. Uncon-firmed reports say Virgin Australia too has also adopted a similar policy. Samsung has issued a global recall of the device after many have caught fire, some even exploding, as they are plugged in and charging, due to faulty batteries.

Cleared For Take-offAirways New Zealand has signed a contract with Rocket Lab to provide air traffic services for its test and commercial rocket launches from the world’s first private orbital launch site on Mahia Peninsula. Rocket Lab plans to deliver commer-cial payloads into space with up to 100 launches a year.

Despite recent unrest, the Phil-ippines is growing in popular-ity with Kiwi travellers, and it’s a change in behaviour that could possibly see it overtake the likes of traditional Asia hotspots Thailand and Bali, say industry sources. The Philippines is in the midst of a war on drugs, in which its President Rodrigo Duterte has sanctioned the killing of drug dealers, with more than 2000 people reportedly killed in a matter of months. In addition,

the government has declared a ‘state of lawless violence’ throughout the country to allow for additional se-curity measures following an explo-sion in Mindanao’s Davao City (02 Sep) which killed at least 15 people, prompting the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade up up-grade its travel advisory to extreme risk throughout central and western Mindanao. But the unrest doesn’t seem to be deterring Kiwis, with House of Travel commercial director Brent Thomas saying on the ground operators have reported that the recent issues have taken place in areas not commonly frequented by tourists. “Going for-ward, Kiwis need to be aware of their surroundings wherever they are travelling, but we aren’t anticipating an impact in travel to the Philip-pines due to security concerns at this stage,” says Thomas. He adds that the brand hasn’t seen any cancellations in the leisure market in the past couple of months. Flight Centre also hasn’t reported any cancellations or changes to travel due to the recent unrest, says general manager Sue Matson. “On the whole New Zealanders are quite resilient

Philippines On Up Despite Unresttravellers, so while situations like this certainly make travellers more vigilant, it’s unlikely that we’ll see this impact on those wishing to visit.”Both Thomas and Matson encourage clients to keep an eye on safetravel.govt.nz for MFAT’s travel advisories. Aside from Mindanao, where it is advising extreme risk in the central and western provinces and high risk in the remaining provinces; MFAT says there is some risk to security elsewhere in the country.

. . . Increased VisitationBoth House of Travel and Flight Centre have reported growth in Kiwi visitation to the Philippines, with Thomas saying the VFR and holiday markets have grown by nearly 28% from Jul 2015 to Jul 2016; while Matson says Flight Centre has seen a 15% increase in bookings to the Philippines so far this year. “Tradi-tionally Thailand and Bali have been key holiday spots for New Zealand-ers in Asia, but the Philippines has been growing in recent years—it’s particularly popular among those looking to get off the beaten path and travellers keen on experiencing the warm Filipino culture,” she says.

Shanghai Shopping: Where To Go, What To BuyLike most Kiwis, agents on the famil were keen to pick up some bargains while in Shanghai, and they were spoiled for choice with plenty of options. They include the City God Temple shopping area in Shanghai’s Old Town, a maze of shops selling local handicrafts, snacks, souvenirs and silk. Some shops are open to haggling while others have fixed prices. Master shopper Niki Davies of World Travellers and helloworld’s Barbara Wright-son are pictured in the scenic shopping area. If clients are looking for cheap ‘Nikes’, electronics or a tailored suit that’s whipped up overnight, send them to the AP Plaza Tourist Shopping Mall (take metro line two and get off at the Science and Technology Museum) and tell them to be prepared to barter. And for high street stores like Zara, Nanjing Rd is the place to visit.

If clients have time and are keen to escape the bustling city for a day, suggest they head out to one of the famous historic water villages nearby. The famil group visited the Zhujiajiao Water Village, which took around an hour to reach by road, and on a drizzly Wed afternoon was almost desert-ed—although the towns are generally popular with both tour groups and locals, and can get extremely busy. The town features canals lined with

tiny shops selling souvenirs and snacks, and there’s also the Fangsh-eng or ‘setting fish free’ bridge, where you can buy goldfish to release into the river for luck (apparently they’re fished straight back out again down-stream and resold). Visitors can also pay around RMB80 to hire a boat for a short scenic cruise along the river. Most tour operators will include a trip to a water village, and there are a num-ber of buses from the city that visitors can catch to Zhujiajiao.

NZ’s Shanghai Skycouch A HitFlight Centre’s Bayley O’Rourke managed to nab a Skycouch on Air New Zealand’s Dreamliner flight home from Shanghai, and was excited to experience a product she sells regularly.“Even for someone as tall as me, I was able to lay down comfortably. When my legs were stretched they just went over the seats, but folded and all nice and snuggled it was perfect,” she says. “Couples could easily lie/spoon together. It was nice to just be able to sit cross legged at times too.”It also worked perfectly for the fam-ilies sitting nearby, says O’Rourke, who says she’d highly recommend the option to anyone travelling with NZ. “It’s a much more comfortable journey, not being sat in the same position all cramped up makes such a difference, and the best part is Skycouch is so affordable to upgrade to,” she says. “I arrived at my destination feeling so refreshed, like I haven’t even travelled from half way across the world. Would definitely be a permanent ‘Skycoucher’ from now on!”
