  • HMK 170 E Mobile Harbour Crane Suitable for All Handling Applications

For many decades, Gottwald PortTechnology has continuously set visible milestones in material handlingin ports all over the world – withMobile Harbour Cranes providing lifting capacities of up to 200 t andradii of up to 56 m.

Mobile and versatile, and equippedwith spreaders, motor grabs andother types of lifting gear, GottwaldMobile Harbour Cranes allow forflexible, reliable and rapid discharg-ing of:■ containers■ all types of bulk and general cargo■ pallets■ heavy loads (project cargo).

As 4-rope grab cranes with a secondhoist, Mobile Harbour Cranes areparticularly suited to professionalcontinuous-duty handling of bulkmaterial and scrap.

In order to advance the competitiveposition of crane operating companiesthroughout the world, Gottwald PortTechnology has continued to extend

Customers Profit from ExperienceThe many years of service provided by the more than 130 HMK 170 Ecranes supplied reflect therenowned high quality ofGottwald Mobile Harbour Cranes.

The resilient steel structure used inboth the HMK 170 E and the 4-ropegrab crane, HMK 170 EG, meets the requirements of FEM class A8 for grab operation and provides along crane service life.

The HMK 170 E is intended as a universal machine for all applicationsincluding container handling and bulkoperation with motor grab.

On the 4-rope grab crane, the HMK 170 EG, the components such as the hoists, slew ring and the rope pulleys are adapted to the requirements of professional bulk handling operation.

its product range. At the same time, the existing Gottwald products havealso been enhanced and their detailsfinely tuned to meet the requirementsof ports, stevedores and the variousvessel classifications.

World Market LeaderHaving sold some 1,300 units,Gottwald Port Technology is theworld's no. 1 in the field of MobileHarbour Cranes. In more than 90countries, the technological leading-edge, achieved thanks to Gottwald’sdiesel-electric drive design and theversatility of its products, guarantees:■ excellent efficiency■ high-speed handling rates ■ high reliability and availability■ excellent mobility.

HMK 170 E Mobile Harbour Crane These excellent features can naturallybe found in the HMK 170 E, a 63-tonne crane ideally suited to all material handling applications in ports with quay facilities for shipsand feeder vessels with beams of upto 18 m, for example.

Efficient Use of Energy – Cuts Costs and Protects theEnvironmentGottwald cranes use electrical drivetechnology which means they usethe energy source most commonlyfound in ports, are economical and ecologically compatible. Thediesel-generators fitted on-boardguarantee optimum efficiency, thelowest possible fuel consumptionand minimum exhaust emissions.

Since they are already designed to be powered by electricity,Gottwald Harbour Cranes are perfectly suited to external powerfrom the terminal's own mainssupply. This improves the efficiencyof the machines still more. In addition, this cuts exhaust gasesfrom the cranes to zero and has the added advantage of considerably reducing noise levels, with the corresponding positivecontribution to a terminal's ecologyrating.

With their electric drive concept,Gottwald machines are ideallyplaced to make use of alternative,environmentally-aware generatedelectrical energy which is, today, already being harvested from thewind, sun and geothermal sourcesand fed into the power grids

    ■ modular design of the super-structure

    ■ option of fitting an additional axle■ increased service and

Chassis and StabilisersThe compact 4-axle chassis with itssmall turning radii provides excellentmanoeuvrability. This means that thecrane can be positioned next to theship without any difficulty – even ifspace is very limited.

The HMK 170 E chassis is designedsuch that a fifth axle can be fitted if the quay is able to withstand onlyrestricted loadings. In addition, thechassis is prepared for attachment of cable reels for an external powersupply.

The maintenance-free mechanicalaxle suspension with up to 460 mmvertical compensation ensures, bymeans of equaliser beams, that theaxle load is always evenly distributed, even on quays with uneven terrain.Large wheels mean that the cranecan travel over rails and other obstacles without any difficulty.

To transfer the forces exerted by thecrane to the quay substructure safelyand evenly, Gottwald Mobile HarbourCranes are fitted with a proven, H-shaped stabiliser arrangement. Ifnecessary, the crane stabilisers can beadapted to the quay specifications.

SuperstructureIn the HMK 170 E superstructure, all the machinery units, i.e.■ diesel-generator set■ hoisting and slewing gear units■ hydraulic unit and■ electrical equipmentare housed in enclosed rooms. This arrangement provides a neatgrouping and excellent accessibilityfor servicing. The individual roomsare designed as modules and, whennecessary, can even be completelydismantled.

To allow use of a smaller counter-weight, the hoist is arranged at the rear of the machinery house. The hoist is no longer located belowthe tower. As a result, it is easilyaccessible for servicing – both fromabove and from the side. The samearrangement applies to the roomhousing the diesel-generator set. In addition, the hydraulic unit has an upright design. As a result, it can be easily lifted out for repair work.

Slewing Gear Drive UnitThe slewing gear likewisehas a modular design andcomprises a high-responseDC motor, upright-mountedplanetary reduction gearunit and spring-loaded discbrake.

Diesel-Generator SetThe generator driven by the dieselengine provides sufficient power tocarry out all crane functions simulta-neously and independently of eachother at maximum speed.

Hydraulic UnitThe hydraulic unit, driven by an AC motor, provides the power forthe luffing gear and auxiliary drives.Luffing is undertaken by means of ahydraulic cylinder under compressiveload. The cylinder and valve block areeasily accessible from the platform ofthe chassis, which facilitates servicing.

Tower/BoomThe torsionally stiff plate girder structure ensures that the mechanicalforces are transferred evenly from theboom to the tower. For safe, fast andcomfortable access to cabs and com-ponents, steps, ladders and platformsare provided in the tower interior.

The triangular boom is designed as arobust tubular structure. A specially-designed rope arrangement betweenthe tower and the boom allows for ahorizontal load path. The cable reel is positioned on the boom head insuch a way as to provide good cableguidance.

    Additional cabon the chassis

    Tower cab

CabsAll crane functions are controlledfrom the tower cab. Optimum cabheight on the tower guarantees anexcellent view – an ergonomic designprovides superlative comfort.

The HMK 170 E can be equipped withan additional cab on the chassis forcrane travel and stabiliser modes. Asan option, this cab can be positionedon the superstructure.

The layout of the superstructuremeans that crane operators can climbdirectly from the machinery roominto the tower. It is not necessary forcustomers to fit stairways.

Control SystemThe Gottwald Visumatic® control system has been developed based on decades of experience in manu-facturing and consists of off-the-shelf components proven in porttechnology.

The system is based on state-of-the-art bus technology that permits amultitude of data to be transmittedsimultaneously, securely and quickly.Visumatic® also features:■ display of all crane functions on

the monitor■ menu-guided selection of different

operating statuses ■ statistical evaluation of handling

rates, operating hours or current maintenance status, etc.

Visumatic® is equipped withcolour graphic symbols clearly
