Launching the
Common Core State Standards
We need to prepare our students for 21st Century
Learning in an information age with technology innovations that will be developed that we can not
yet even imagine!
How will teaching and learning change in the 21st
Century?http://youtu.be/yfpa9uTWdJE
Communication Collaboration
Critical Thinking Creativity
In order to prepare our students to become 21st Century Learners they need to master the skills needed for school and work known as the 4c’s.
21st Century Skills and the 4c’s are infused in the
Career and College Ready Standards which are the end
goals of the Common Core Standards
Each grade level Common Core Standard spirals with increasing
difficulty from Kindergarten to
Career and College Ready
Career and College Ready Standard examples:
Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when reading or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
Prepare and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization , development , and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
Look for evidence of the 4c’s in the Career and College Ready standards and discuss them with a
partner.
We will fully implement the Common Core State Standards
in 2014-2015
We will take the new national test with Common Core
Standards in Spring of 2015
We have two years to make the transition!
Where did the Common Core
standards come from?
• Council of Chief State School Officers and National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, teachers, school administrators, and experts worked together to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare students for college and workforce.
• Standards adopted by most states.
• Currently each state has its own set of standards; student expectations vary from state to state.
States could add up to 15% to the Common
Core
• California added standards to the Common Core to address perceived gaps and to ensure that the rigor of California’s existing standards would be maintained.
How will the Common Core Standards
be different?
• Includes rigorous content and application of
knowledge through higher-order thinking skills• Performance-based collaborative
activities and assessments• Integrated literacy across content areas
including Science and Social Studies• Stronger emphasis on informational
text, research and media skills
Shifts in ELA Common Core Standards:
Staircase of complexity design, the standards build upon each other
A combination of literary and informational texts
Integration of Social Science and Science content knowledge
3 types of writing: Informative/Explanatory, Narrative, and Opinion/Persuasive taught K-12
Emphasis on academic vocabulary
Distribution of Literacy and Informational Passages by Grade
Grade Literature Information
4 50% 50%
8 45% 55%
12 30% 70%
ELA Standards Organization
Reading for Literature (10 standards) Reading for Informational Text (10 standards) Foundation (4 standards – K-5 only) Writing (10 standards) Language (6 standards) Speaking and Listening (6 standards)
Each of the standard areas have substrands, for example in Reading for Literature and Information:
Key Ideas and Details Craft and Structure Integration of
Knowledge and Ideas Range of Reading and
Level of Complexity.
These substrands are common for all grade levels.
Breaking it
down…..
Focus-narrow and deepen the scope
Coherence connecting across grade levels
Fluency-speed and accuracy
Deep understanding
Application of concepts
Dual Intensity -practice and understand
Shifts in Common Core
Math
K-12 Mathematical Practice Standards
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools
strategically. Be precise. Look for and make use of
structure. Look for and express regularity
in repeating reasoning.
There are two sets of
Standards in math:
Math Domain Standards by grade level
Open your binder to the Math Practice Standards on the blue sheet(s). This copy provide specific examples of what the practices look like at your grade level. Discuss with a partner how your math lessons could incorporate these practices.
Counting and Cardinality
(K only) Operations in
Algebraic Thinking Number and
Operations in Base Ten
Measurement and Data
Geometry Number and
Operations-Fractions (grades 3-5)
Peruse the Domain standards and deconstructed support tool. Discuss with a partner how the new standards compare to the content standards you teach now.
Math Domain
Standards
The Math Domain Standards are on the salmon colored pages in your binder. Standards that are underlined and bolded are the California additions.
The last sheet provides grade level Common Core Math Vocabulary.
The white pages are from North Caroline Department of Public Instruction .This tool deconstructs each standard to clarify what students need to know and be able to do to demonstrate mastery.
New Common Core Assessments
Who is creating them?SMARTER-Balanced Assessment ConsortiumWho else is using these tests?Currently 29 statesWhat is the purpose? To develop a comprehensive and innovative assessment system for grades 3-8 and grade 11 in English Language Arts and Mathematics aligned to the Common Core Standards so that students leave high school prepared for post secondary success in college or a career. What will happen to CSTs?These tests will replace CST, CMA, and STS. We will take the last STAR assessments in the spring of 2014.
Summative assessments aligned to College and Career Readiness Standards
Computer adaptive Administered during last 12 weeks of school year Results will show achievement and growth Question types:1. Selected Response2. Constructed Response 3. Extended Response 4. Performance –Based Tasks 5. Technology-Enhanced 6. Technology-Enabled

There are Big Changes ahead and we will be
ready! The next video clip illustrates how teaching and learning will change in the 21st Century using the 4c’s
Collaboration + Communication + Critical Thinking+ Creativity
Look for evidence of the 4c’s as you watchthe video. Share the evidence you found with a partner after watching the video.
Partnership for 21Century Learning presents: Above and Beyond
Check for Understanding
Selected Response:What are the 4c’s ?a. Collaboration, Communication, Critical
Thinking, and Confusionb. Communication with your Collaborative
team on Critical Thinking and Common Corec. Collaboration, Communication, Critical
Thinking and Creativity
Share your answer with your team!
Constructed Response Using the Math Practice Standards
and the grade level Math Domain Standards, analyze how the 4c’s are reflected in the content. Compose a “Quick write” citing specific examples of standards that correlate to each skill. Share your writing with a partner.
Performance-Based Assessment
Knowing the important role the 4c’s will play in 21st Century Learning how can you apply them in your daily instruction now?
Share your thinking with your table group and collaborate on how you can purposefully including these important skills in your teaching.
The Common Core Standards are an opportunity to transform how we teach our students to prepare
them for the 21st Century “Never doubt that a small group of
thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead
How will you begin the change?
