Studies show that 75% of students who struggle in reading in third grade never catch up and are more likely to drop out of high school. According to mid-year testing results, many of the students at Lily B. Clayton are currently performing below level. For example, 61% of this year's fifth graders are not at level in reading (53 students out of a total of 87). Other grade levels have students performing below level between 43% (the highest performing grade - 3rd) and 59% (the next lowest performing - 2nd). Well-implemented tutoring programs can result in significant improvement on standardized measures of reading achievement. These programs not only improve test scores, but have a positive impact on student attitudes toward reading and learning in general. The formation of strong relationships formed with tutors also suggest the tutoring program contributes to long term success in school. A tutor employed to assist students who are falling behind not only helps those being tutored with comprehension, but also with self confidence and overall classroom morale. Even more, when all students read on level, teachers can offer enrichment activities to enhance the learning process.

Year Assessment2018 and beyond - As the tutoring program continues, reading scores increase and eventually, all
students at Lily B perform at or above grade level in reading.
Evaluation* Describe your strategy for tracking the outcomes of this grant. Be specific about the desired outcomes you anticipate seeing.
Lily B. Clayton utilizes many evaluation methods for student success. Tools - such as Achieve3000 for our older students and Smarty Ants for those in lower grades - deliver differentiated instruction and evaluation tailored to each student. Assessments are given three times a year for students in third-fifth grades using the

Achieve3000 program - beginning, middle and end of year. In addition, students participate in the Accelerated Reader program that monitors reading practice and progress. Students take short quizzes after reading a book on their individual level to check comprehension. The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) also monitor student achievement on a standardized level. Individualized attention and instruction from a tutor can help shrink the achievement gap between the students that are performing below level and those who are on or above grade level. We believe this focused instruction will steadily improve students' reading scores at Lily B.

Funding Sources* If WORTH is not the sole funder of this project, what will your other sources of funding be? If $10,000 is enough to fund this project in full, please enter "WORTH"
Lily B. Clayton PTA has funded this project for this (2017-2018) year through its annual, volunteer parent fundraising efforts to help every child at Lily B. Clayton Elementary. These fundraising efforts include an annual Walkathon and Spring Auction for all kids and parents at Lily B. Clayton Elementary.
Sustainability* How will this project be funded beyond WORTH's investment? (if applicable; if not applicable put "N/A")
The Lily B. PTA is currently operating at a deficit having replaced lost Title 1 funding ($60,000) for the school this year (see budget). This lost funding was critical for many items including tutoring. The PTA will continue to fund this project as long as it can through its fundraising efforts as well as seeking other grant opportunities in the community that may be available for the project.
