` Baker's architectural method is one of improvisation, in whichinitial drawings have only an idealistic link to the finalconstruction, with most of the accommodations and design

choices being made on-site by the architect himself.Compartments for milk bottles near the doorstep, windowsillsthat double as bench surfaces, and a heavy emphasis on takingcues from the natural condition of the site are just someexamples.

` Baker created a cooling system by placing a high, latticed, brickwall near a pond that uses air pressure differences to draw coolair through the building. Various features of his work such asusing recycled material, natural environment control andfrugality of design may be seen as sustainable architectureor green building with its emphasis on sustainability

` He believed that a house should blend with the environment, without disturbing the natural features. Most of his creationsfeature unplastered brick walls, jalis or trellises in thebrickwork and frameless doors and windows that let in naturallight and air.

` L

aurence Wilfred Baker a veteran architect and pioneer of thelow-cost, eco- friendly housing technology with hisunconventional approach to architecture , redefined the conceptof housing for the masses and earned him the name of ¶architectof the poor·.

` In 1945, Baker came to India , to work for leprosy patients.

` His first job was to convert or replace old dreaded asylum intomodern hospital that can deal with leprosy.

` Funds were limited so he worked with thatch , laterite , bamboo, mud , brick , stone and low quality timber.

` People living there considered cow dung even as a building

material which was far from bakers books.` However he explored those materials in the finest way and

developed beautiful structures

It is a low cost construction , even though it the building servesthe needs of its inhabitants to the fullest. His buildings tend to emphasize prolific masonry construction, instilling privacy and evoking history with brick jali walls, aperforated brick screen which invites a natural air flow to cool the

buildings' interior, in addition to creating intricate patterns oflight and shadowBaker never plastered his walls just to reduce the cost ofconstruction. He believed that beauty of material lies in exploring it to the

fullest.

Baker found fascinating the skills of ordinary , poor , village

people working with most unpromising and crude materialHe spent most of his time initially watching and learning fromthem.Later , he built houses of indigenous style ,stable structures thatwould cope with climatic conditions .T he Hamlet has the significant Baker feature which is irregular,

pyramid-like structures on roofs, with one side left open and tiltinginto the windHis designs invariably had traditional Indian sloping roofs andterracotta Mangalore tile shingling with gables and vents allowingrising hot air to escape. His clients met him at Hamlet in drawing room and drafting of planwas done from the corner of his bedroom tableHe never submitted any detail bills to his clientsT here were no working drawingIf any mason had doubt , he would pull out his pack of cards whichwere made up of the reverse side of wedding cards and openedused envelops

Loyola Women·s Hostel was built in 1970 in India

.Curved walls entered Baker's architectural vocabulary as a means toenclose more volume at lower material cost than straight wallsFor Laurie, "buildings were more fun with the circle.´Baker never gave any special consideration to front elevation .According to him all the sides were equally important.
