At midnight on May 21, 2011, the fnal leg-

islative vote was taken in St. Paul to place a

question on the 2012 general election ballot in

    Minnesota: Shall the Minnesota Constitu-

tion be amended to provide that only a

union of one man and one woman shall

be valid or recognized as a marriage in

Minnesota? As we stood under the Capitol

rotunda with hundreds o other supporters

who had been waiting all night or this vote,

a wave o despair washed over us. And then

Senator Scott Dibble and Representative Kar-en Clark came out to reassure us weve just

    begun to fght.

An hour ollowing that vote, Minnesotans

United or All Families, the ofcial campaign

to oppose the ballot measure, was launched.

We are a broad coalition o organizations

and community and business leaders work-

ing to deeat the proposed constitutional

amendment, which would ban marriage or

same-sex couples in Minnesota. Faith, la-

    bor, progressive, and nonpartisan organiza-

tions; communities o color; current and or-

    mer elected ofcials; Republicans, DFLers,

Greens, Independents, and Libertarians haveall joined to deeat this amendment.

We are a coalition ounded on a strong

belie in the power o marriage. We believe

marriage and amily are about love and com-

    mitment, working together, bettering the

community, raising children, and growing old

together. We believe in a Minnesota that val-

ues and supports strong amilies and creates

a welcoming environment or all Minnesota

amilies to thrive. And we believe marriage

    matters. To all.

    Twenty-nine other states have amend-

ments banning marriage or same-sex cou-

ples in their constitutions. Minnesota has

the opportunity to be the very frst state

to deeat this kind o amendment, and

    make history.

In the months leading up to this historic

vote on November 6, 2012, we will host a con-

versation with Minnesotans to talk about why

marriage matters. We will be launching the

    largest grassroots campaign Minnesota has

ever seen, using innovate persuasion tech-niques and specifc messaging strategies that

weve garnered rom the unortunate history

o the losses that have come beore us.

Minnesotans will go the polls with many

decisions to make. Our coalitions goals are

    simple:

Make sure voters know this amendment is

on the ballot on November 6, 2012

Ensure voters know how this amendment

    hurts Minnesota amilies

    Persuade voters to vote NO

In order or our coalition and this cam-

paign to be successul, we must come togeth-

er and accomplish many goals. We will need

thousands o volunteers and fnancial donors,

and even more voters who are committed to

voting NO on this anti-marriage, anti-amily

    amendment.

You know whats at stake: a change

to our State Constitution that will last or

generations, and would tell thousands o

Minnesota amilies that their amily doesnt

count. This amendment must be beat.

Winning will not be easy. We must work hard-

er than weve ever worked beore. We must

be smarter, more strategic and insightul in

order to maximize each and every scarce re-

source. But we can win. We wont be the thir-

tieth state to add this amendment to our con-

stitution. We will be the frst state to deeat it.

You can take action today. By joining our

campaign as a fnancial contributor, volunteer

or simply committing to Vote No, you will

make a dierence. By visiting mnunited.org, you can be a part o this winning eort.

    As Minnesotans United Board membe

    and lie-long Republican Wheelock Whitney

recently stated in a Star Tribune editorial,

Many things can undermine a marriage. But

my happiness has never depended on depriv-

    ing others o their happiness.

We couldnt agree more. And, we look or-

ward to celebrating this victory with you and

    all Minnesota amilies next all.

Thank you to all o our wonderul volun

teers, our board o directors and our coalition

partners or helping us get to this level o suc-

cess in such a short time. We could not do itwithout you.

    The Hiawatha Line

Light rail transit is the modern version of the street-cars that operated in Minneapolis until the mid-1950s.LRT is an important part of a transit system because

of its ability to transport high numbers of commuterscomfortably, efciently, and quietly. LRT trains can op-erate as single cars, or can be combined into two- andthree-car trains. LRT trains are clean and quiet becausethey are electrically powered by overhead lines. Station

designs allow access by pedestrians, drop-off, recong-ured bus connections, and park-and-ride.

The Hiawatha Light Rail Transit (LRT) route is the rstLRT line planned for the Twin Cities metropolitanarea. The 12-mile route runs along Hiawatha Avenueand along 5th St. in Downtown Minneapolis. The lineincludes 17 stations, and links Downtown Minneapolis, the Airport, and the Mall of America. These locationsare three of the largest economic and job centersin the region. There are a total of four stations in

Downtown Minneapolis and six stations in Minneapolisneighborhoods. Visit .
