elcome to a new and improved LaViano. Our magazine has an updated luxury look, and so does the watch salon in our Westwood store. We’ve reimagined the space

as a collection of five European-style boutiques representing our most important manufacturers: Breitling, Cartier, IWC, Patek Philippe and Tag Heuer. These are our world-class anchor brands, and we’ve invested in an expanded selection of lines from each one, all presented in a posh, con-temporary setting. We still carry other fine watch brands—Alpina, Michele and Shinola among them—but we’ve shifted our emphasis from breadth to depth of selection.

On the jewelry side, too, we’ve adopted a sharper focus, bringing you fewer and better designers. We’re especially excited about our more exclusive designers—ones you won’t find in every other jewelry store. They have names such as Gurhan, Stephen Webster and Monica Rich Kosann. Besides intrinsic quality, what these designers have in common is aesthetic verve and a distinctive point of view. Alongside them, you’ll find plenty of unusual, one-of-a-kind items and limited-production lines from small ateliers unknown to the public.

What are the design trends in jewelry this year? Longer looks are fashionable, and so is layering. Geometrical shapes are evident in many of the latest designs, and you’ll see plenty of them in the pages that follow.

While we’re committed to bringing you the

best of what’s new and noteworthy in fine jewelry, we also remain the go-to store for bridal and engagement purchases. We have a message for young couples considering their first serious jew-elry purchase: LaViano offers unparalleled value. We sell certified diamonds at wholesale prices, and we manufacture our own platinum and gold settings here in the store, thereby saving cost by cutting out the middleman. Simply put, LaViano offers quality that’s comparable to the famous stores on Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue, at prices that are considerably lower.

Our customers, who often span generations in families, have many reasons for returning to LaViano. Some are looking for that perfect holi-day gift that will be cherished for years to come. Others are seeking to mark a major milestone in life—an anniversary or a promotion, perhaps—with a piece of jewelry or a new watch. Some are thinking of getting engaged and ready to learn about diamonds in a friendly, no-pressure envi-ronment. Still other customers have developed a habit: They collect watches, or cuff links, or fine writing instruments, or artisanal knives, or cock-tail rings, or gemstone pendants…. These are all good reasons to drop in and see us! We encourage you to join them, and we hope to see you soon.

Rock onIt’s been said that British jewelry designer Stephen Webster “puts the rock ‘n’ roll in rocks” with his unpredictable designs and bold use of exotic colored gems. And devotees like Jennifer Lopez and Madonna no doubt agree.

Webster’s career began at the tender age of 16 dur-ing his apprenticeship at the workbench in London’s Hatton Garden. Today, he is touted for his glamorous, thought-provoking jewelry line that blends traditional craftsmanship with interesting inspiration—think David Bowie’s legendary alter ego Ziggy Stardust and Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Stop by LaViano this holiday season and check out our extensive selection of Webster’s creative creations.

star-spangled mannerIt wasn’t long ago that men’s lapels went bare and their breast pockets empty. now these high-profile areas are typically adorned—the pocket with a colorful handkerchief and the lapel with a silk boutonniere or a jewelry pin. Today if you’re a politician of any stature, an american flag on your left lapel is de rigueur, especially for a press conference or television appearance. after seeing one too many cheap enamel flags, which surely send the wrong signal about the value of Old Glory and the individuality of the candidate or office-holder, Jeff LaViano designed a custom american flag pin worthy of its subject. The field of stars is repre-sented by blue sapphires, the stripes by rubies and diamonds in a white gold setting. Says Jeff, “I thought of sending one to a worthy Presidential candidate for good luck, but I’m at least going to wait until the race gets serious.” meantime, maybe you or a loved one are a candidate to own this tastefully patriotic pin.

Best breakfaSTSWhy settle for a bowl of cereal at home when you can start the day at Jack’s Café or Sogno Coffeehouse—two of our favorite a.m. destinations in Westwood.

Cozy, family friendly and sporting a brand-new interior redo, Jack’s Café is a perfect spot for a cup of coffee and a hearty breakfast. Best bets: the Santa Anna omelet stuffed with home-made salsa, avocado and pepper Jack cheese; McLovin pancakes featuring fresh strawberries, blueberries and bananas in the batter; lobster roll Benedict; and hanger steak and eggs.

Sogno Coffehouse, a charming café located next door to three-star sister Caffe Anello, is best-known for its in-house roasted coffee and vast selection of sweet or savory crepes —filled with everything from warm apple cinnamon compote to eggplant caponata. Added bonus: Many of the crepes can be made gluten-free.Jack’S café, 325 brOadway, weSTwOOd, 201.666.0400; JackScafenJ.cOmSOGnO cOffee HOuSe, 425-429 brOadway, weST-wOOd, 201.497.3628; caffeaneLLO.cOm/SOGnO

| the laviano guide A new wAy with whiskeyIf you’re still drinking your whiskey “straight,” it’s time to mix it up. Literally. The world’s most masculine beverage has made its way onto mixed-drinks menus across the country. “whiskey’s pleasures are diverse and delicious,” notes warren Bobrow, author of Whiskey Cocktails. “And much to the surprise of traditionalists, it’s a versatile spirit that’s extremely adaptable when it comes to mixology.”

Here, we present Bobrow’s Robert Burns Cocktail, a tipple that hon-ors Scotland’s most famous poet. every sip is pure elegance, whether it’s served straight up or in a martini glass with a flamed orange zest twist. That said, if you’re a “wee tim’rous beastie,” as Burns himself wrote, steer clear: This cocktail is not for the faint of heart. If you can handle it, though, it’s a truly luxurious way to start an autumn evening.

the RobeRt buRns CoCktailn 2 oz. Scotch whiskyn ¾ oz. Italian vermouth, such as Carpano Antican Dash of orange bittersn Dash of absinthen Orange zest twist (optional)

Fill a cocktail shaker three-quarters with ice. Pour all the liquid ingredi-ents over the ice. Stir gently to combine. Strain this into a martini glass. Singe the orange zest by holding it firmly behind a lit match and pinching it to release its natural citrus oils. (Be careful to spritz the citrus oils into the glass.)

Ask the expert: Jack LaVianoQ. i’ve always thought pearls were for “older women.” am i wrong?a. Yes you are, I’m sorry to say! We’ve seen a strong resurgence in the popularity of pearls in recent years, particularly among “younger women.” A strand of pearls should, after all, be a staple in every woman’s jewelry collection. Our inventory focuses on Akoya pearls, which are grown in saltwater in Japan. they’re “traditional” pearls—perfectly round, pure white and free of blemishes. For customers who prefer a more contemporary look, we also carry baroque pearls, which have an uneven, irregular shape. there’s truly something for every woman.

100 yeaRs of fashionWhether you’re a hard-core fashionista or simply an admirer of beauty, you’ll enjoy nathalie herschdorfer’s Coming into fashion: a Century of Photography at Condé nast (Prestel, $65). This celebration of fashion photography, drawn from a museum exhibition, brings together some of the finest work from that publishing house’s legendary archives and the best of new York, Paris and Milan.

Via the volume’s 208 images you’ll look through the lenses of re-nowned photographers and witness how the art of fashion photogra-phy has evolved—and how it has reflected change in society. (among chapter titles are “The Golden age” and “The new Wave.”) Early Vogue and Vanity fair covers recall styles of a bygone era that feels very remote—yet also evokes a timeless elegance that speaks eloquently to us today.

Go foR the GoldJust like the little black dress, gold never goes out of style. and laViano is excited to feature a stunning new line of jewelry by turkish-born designer Gurhan orhan, who uses ancient techniques to hand-craft elegant pieces in rich, warm, pure 24-karat gold. skeptics said it couldn’t be done—pure gold is too soft to work with. but Gurhan (he goes by his first name) disagreed. “i did research and found out that a thousand years ago people did make jewelry with pure gold,” he has said. so he studied the tools that goldsmiths used many centuries ago and mod-ified them to make his own jewelry. the result? a unique collection of light, contempo-rary-feeling earrings, neck-laces and bracelets admired by celebs like angelina Jolie and Charlize theron.

| the laviano guide focus on photography Whether you’re looking for a special gift for a budding photog-rapher or simply to enhance your own hobby, Bergen County Camera is the place to go. The shop has remained a staple in Westwood for nearly three decades—despite the shift from film to digital, the growing use of cellphone cameras and the rise of Internet shopping.

What’s their secret? Specialized services are a big part of the store’s ongoing success. In addition to their extensive selection of camera models, by such brands as Canon, Nikon and Olympus, BCC hosts numerous events and classes for both newbies and not-so-newbies. Free Focus Sessions, held every Saturday at 9:30 a.m., for example, educate shutterbugs on a variety of photograph-ic topics. The store also offers photo excursions throughout the year to places like Mohonk Mountain House, the New York Botani-cal Garden and the Bronx zoo.Bergen County Camera, 270 WestWood ave., WestWood, 201.664.4113; BergenCountyCamera.Com

THE a‑ Z LISTLaViano offers more than 90 brands of jew-elry, watches and giftware—including all of the brands listed here.

FOPE

6 great tastesThe restaurant scene in Westwood gets better and better every year. Today, our hometown boasts a few dozen noteworthy dining establishments—from simple bistros to marvelous Mediterranean eateries. Here you tried these half-dozen highlights?

Bat Barry’s—This seasonal bistro offers 20 bottles of wine for $20 each. Nowhere else in West-wood can you get that kind of deal! Great food and a relaxed atmosphere add to the appeal.

Bibi’z—Pop in for after-work appetizers or while away the evening with the girls. The Mediterranean fare is made with fresh, local ingredients, and the house cocktails are killer.

Caffe Anello—Enjoy a delicious, freshly pre-pared Italian meal here, then head next door to Sogno Coffeehouse for an equally delicious dessert crepe. Dinner doesn’t get much better!

grange—It’s an interesting concept—sophisticated fine dining in a come-as-you-are-casual atmosphere. And it works. Start with “Soup of Joel’s Mood” cour-tesy of rock ‘n’ roll executive chef Joel Scheinzeit.

hanami—Incredibly fresh sushi, contemporary Chinese dishes and tasty tea blends await at this un-derrated spot. It’s conveniently located next to a liquor store, so you can pick up some wine, beer or sake before your visit.

Mezza—“A glowing passageway to far-off flavors” is how The New York Times described this modern Mediterranean storefront when it opened in 2012. We agree! Be sure to save room for the chocolate soufflé with Chambord cream.

THE CHANGING FACE OF TIMEthe LaViano watch store has been reimagined as a totally new watch salon outfitted with five european‑style boutiques. these boutiques reflect an evolution in our watch business: We’ve chosen to carry fewer brands, and the most important brands are represented in a more expansive and profound way. our five anchor brands are Breitling, cartier, IWc, patek philippe and tag heuer. as you can see from the images above, the new watch salon is well‑lit, modern, sleek and luxurious—the perfect environment in which to appreciate the marvels of the world’s finest hand‑made timepieces. stop by LaViano and see for yourself.

precious mettleThe uncompromising craftsmanship of Fope, the Italian jewelry maker, gives brilliant materials an extra shine. Gold and silver never had it so good.

There’s no accent mark in the word Fope, even thoughworldwide connoisseurs of the finest jewelry know it intimately

as foe-PAY. Instead, the accent is on the sophisticated glow of luxury achieved by this Italian jewelry maker ever since it was

founded by Umberto Cazzola in Vicenza, Italy, in 1929. For just one example, take this stunning bracelet-and-necklace combination from Fope’s Silver Twin Collection. It reflects the company’s adroit twinning of classical design elegance with innovation. True to its tradition, Fope still produces its world-renowned jewelry pieces in Vicenza, where despite ever-improving production efficiency it continues to depend on the skill and discern-

ment of passionate individual craftspeople. Where will you find the latest bracelets, necklaces, rings and earrings from

Fope? Why, at LaViano Jewelers, of course.

bowl of distinction

Whatever you decide to put in an enchanting container like this one

had best be worthy of its regal beauty.

ade of glass with a garland of flowers and leaves cast in pewter, the Sophie Hydran-gea Bowl with a rose celadon glaze by Jay Strongwater makes a statement of tasteful splendor that would do any home proud.

Strongwater came to home accessories from the Rhode Island School of Design and the world of fashion. Before long, the jewelry-encrusted, filigreed picture frames he gave as gifts amazed and delighted the recipients—and earned prompt admiration from the industry’s most discriminating buyers.

This distinctive bowl is finished in antique brass and embellished with sparkling crystals. It features pink hand-painted porcelain petals and measures 9¼ inches high and 14¾ inches in diameter. Offered at $3,000, it is just one example of the head-turning giftware now available at LaViano—items that, once purchased, will pay dividends in pleasure and pride for a lifetime.

‘it ain’t over ’til it’s over.’

Few in baseball history can match the late yogi berra in playing stats—and none in endearing statements. By timothy kelley

et’s not forget this about New York Yankees star Yogi Berra, who passed away at 90 in September: The man could definitely play baseball. Graced with an Adonis-like build he wasn’t

(at five-foot-seven), just as he never found time to earn a Ph.D. (or even get past eighth grade). But the long-time Montclair resident’s enduring fame as a public figure is built on solid rock: On the diamond—as player and manager—he was good.

How else could he lead his team in “runs batted in” for seven consecutive seasons (1949 through 1955), outshin-ing guys like DiMaggio and Mantle? How else, in the no-glory crouch of catcher, could he lead the league six times in double plays, eight times in putouts and three times in assists? Or, as a hitter, log more homers than strikeouts in five different seasons? Or, as a manager, be one of just seven to lead both American and National League teams to the World Series?

Yet there’ve been many great sports performers, but only one Yogi. Berra earned his permanent slot in the bat-ting order of our hearts also by being a kind of lucky charm for the great Yanks (“He’d fall in a sewer and come up with

a gold watch,” quipped longtime man-ager Casey Stengel) and by the small, inadvertent miracles he wrought with the language.

Malaprops, they called his sayings—and yes, they played havoc with logic—and math. “It gets late early around here,” he said. “Baseball is 90 percent mental, and the other half is physical.” They bristled with guileless redundancy. “You can observe a lot by watching,” said Yogi. “It’s like déjà vu all over again.”

And yet Yogi’s malaprops often contained a golden nugget of truth that made us smile. In fact, it ain’t over ’til it’s over—and that’s something we all need to remember any time we’re tempted to give up when the odds are against us, or grow cocky when success seems assured.

It’s over, now, for Lawrence Peter Berra—but not for us. We’ll remember his bon mots as we recall the iconic image of him in ’56, just as he’s leapt into the arms of pitcher Don Larsen after what remains the only perfect World Series game. If history offers a better picture of pure exultation, it has slipped our minds.

Even about death itself, it turns out, Berra-ology yields up a timely insight: “Always go to other people’s funer-als,” this irreplaceable man advised. “Otherwise they won’t come to yours.”

In British Columbia, North America’s largest ski resort lures travelers

to a scenic paradise, whether or not they ski

its dramatic slopes.

f you watched the alpine skiing events in the 2010 Winter Olympics, you’ve seen a breathtaking ski resort in Canada’s westernmost province known as Whistler, or Whistler-Blackcomb to be technically correct. Created by the 1997 fusion of two separate ski resorts (each with its namesake mountain), at 8,171 acres it’s one-and-a-half times the size of Colorado’s Vail, and draws approximately 2 million visitors each year. They’re onto

something—this is an enchanting destination in any season, and it’s quite simply one of the grandest places to ski on earth.

Whistler’s debut in the Olympic spotlight was actually planned for decades earlier—it was mapped out of rugged terrain by the Garibaldi Corporation in the early ’60s as part of a bid to win the 1968 games. Blackcomb opened for skiing in 1980, and its neighbor was rumored not to relish the competition. But like an adolescent too eager to drive, the place may have benefited from a seasoning delay.

You’ll most likely approach the area via Vancouver International Airport, and it’s definitely worth checking out British Columbia’s metropolis, if you can spare a day or two. Stroll through mammoth Stanley Park (bigger than New York’s Central, with half a million trees), and dine along one of the cobblestone streets of the famous Bohemian Gastown neighborhood after checking your reservation time by the area’s famed steam-powered clock. You can join what The New York Times called the “revelrous” crowd at the Alibi Room, try the pork shoulder steak at the Pourhouse on Water Street, or venture beyond G-town to spot celebs at the Blue Water Café. Or browse around at the department store that nicknames itself hiply “the Bay” as if it’s as new as this fall’s fashions. The truth: It’s the Hudson’s Bay Company, originally a fur-trading outfit chartered by King Charles II in 1670.

As eye-popping natural mountain showplaces go, Whistler-Blackcomb is not remote, just 78 miles—about a two-hour drive—north of the airport on Highway 99, evocatively tagged the Sea-to-Sky Highway. The area was first surveyed by Hudson’s Bay men in 1858, and soon thereafter British

naval surveyors named its more prominent peak London Mountain. But everyone came to identify it with the whistling noise made by the local Western hoary marmot, a large ground squirrel plentiful in the area. The ethereal trumped the imperial, and the name Whistler stuck.

That moniker identifies not only a mountain, but also a resort town of just under 10,000 permanent residents, which swells far beyond that total in ski season. After the early Olympic bid didn’t pan out, development here has been methodical rather than headlong, guided by California-based landscape architect Eldon Beck, who has stressed sustainability and arranged buildings to maximize stunning vistas and provide what one Whistler official has called “a sense of discovery around every corner.” There are green parks, cul-de-sacs, cobblestone plazas, generous underground parking and shuttle buses that make the village an island of urban pedestrian-friendliness amid the wilderness.

That makes Whistler a nature-focused oasis, where marmots, bears and moose feel right at home, right alongside their human neighbors. Indeed, Whistler has been studied by towns around the world for its impressively amicable human-ursine relations, and its burgeoning black bear population was the subject of a 2007 New York Times article that noted the local critters’ unsettling ability to open car doors, pluck bait from traps and stroll among the tourist crowds.

At least the bears don’t hog the slopes, where 2010’s Olympians and Paralympians made history competing in the downhill, slalom,

giant slalom, super-combined and Super-G events. With an overall lift capacity of nearly 70,000 skiers per hour, and an average annual snowfall of about 38 feet, you’ll rarely encounter a run that’s “skied out,” although the comparatively modest lift-served summit elevations of 7,160 feet (Whistler) and 7,494 feet (Blackcomb) mean you may encounter a bit of slushiness on the bottom one-third of the mountains. On Blackcomb you’ll find the world-renowned “Couloir Extreme,” one of Skiing magazine’s worldwide top 10 steep in-bound runs. And the “Peak 2 Peak Gondola” that links the resort’s two eponymous mountains (the planet’s highest and longest unsupported cable-car span) is a stunning sky ride you’ll see again in all its glory behind your eyelids as you settle into high-altitude slumber by night.

Say it’s snowboarding rather than skiing that sparks your passion—this is still your ideal spot, and snowboarders here actually outnumber skiers. And Whistler-Blackcomb has plenty to offer in the summer, as well. At the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, chairlifts and a gondola ferry bikers to the 4,000-foot level, where they can embark on any of 70 bike trails—from gently banked and easy to twisting, turning and daunting. And there are ample opportunities for golf, hiking, swimming and simply taking in glorious views amid the clear mountain sunshine.

Nestled at the foot of Blackcomb you’ll find sumptuous accommodations at the resort’s leading hostelry, the 273-room Four Seasons Resort Whistler, designed by Vancouver architect Michael

Huggins. This peaked-roof structure carries the trademark hubris of Whistler-Blackcomb with its handsome, lodgelike exterior of wood and local stone and a gracious interior that features limestone, eucalyptus and granite. Rooms come with wireless Internet, HDTV, a gas-burning fireplace and mountain-view balconies. There’s a full-service spa with 11 treatment rooms, two couples’ rooms and two Zen relaxation lounges, and if you forgot to schlep poles on the plane there’s a convenient package of ski-equipment rentals on offer.

At the Four Seasons, you’ll find conviviality to the max in the lively Sidecut Modern Steak & Bar, named for the curvature on the side of a ski or snowboard. Its specialties seem to come double-peaked just like the resort itself: two if by land and two if by sea. For the former there’s succulent Alberta prime beef or B.C. fallow venison loin, cooked on an 1,800-degree infrared grill (it’s designed to hold in natural juices while grilling to a fare-the-well); for the latter there’s halibut from Queen Charlotte Sound or wild Chinook salmon. Be sure to cozy up to the open fireplace with a specialty cocktail.

Whether you’re a demanding, expert skier or a vacationer looking for beauty, recreation and adventure, Whistler-Blackcomb should be on your short list of travel destinations for memories, on or off the slopes, that will last a lifetime. Thanks to Mother Nature and the tall ambitions of planners, this resort is a giant reason to be proud you call North America home.

wine cellars raisethe barThese home hideaways, cool in more than one sense, are designed to keep an oenophile’s prized collection at the precisely perfect temperature and humidity at all times. But nothing says the cel-lar can’t be an inviting showplace too—or that your wine room can’t be above ground. Let the pictures on these pages inspire you!

For any host who’s a wine connoisseur, the journey downstairs to uncork that special bottle for a guest is a proud moment. But not just because of vintage or bou-

quet. Your destination itself can give you pride. Remember: This is your home you’re showing off.

Fact is, wine cellars have come up in the world. Once they were little more than functional caves. Today, skilled architects and interior designers are making them essen-tial components of a home’s visual drama, as friendly to the eye as they are to the palate.

This page, through the archway lie not just precious bottles in their diamond-patterned bins, but also specially commissioned hand-painted Georgian-style side chairs depicting four English castles. Opposite, a cellar becomes the inspiration fora dining room’s geometric motif. Previous pages, the cellar is thematically integrated with a fireplace, recreation area and media room, to stunning visual effect.

the artof craftsSure, small-batch “craft” breweries still claim less than 4 percent of U.S. beer sales. But the world is changing; most Americans now live within 10 miles of a craft brewer. By Michael hiller

This is beer at its most famil-iar—light, pale mass-brewed brands like Bud, Coors and Miller. And you know what familiarity breeds; not long ago crafters looked askance at such presumably plebeian brews. But those days are over, and the age of creative, full-flavored craft lagers is upon us. Try Sierra Nevada’s Nooner Pilsner, or Jabby Brau from Jack’s Abby.

American amber ales range in color from light honey to dark copper. Craft brewers love ambers for their mild, toasted malt aromas and bright hoppy flavor. If you see either Troegs Nugget Nectar or Zoe in the store, grab it; they’re the two highest-rated red ales in America.

A red-white-and-blue inter-pretation of a classic English style, American pale ales sparkle in gold tones. Loaded with floral and citrus notes and piney hops, these blond beers pair sensationally well with roasted meats, maybe a wedge of cheddar cheese, and a sliver of apple pie. Or just pop open a Deschutes Brew-ery’s Mirror Pond Pale Ale and pretend it’s a holiday.

Who doesn’t like coffee and chocolate? Those are the predominant flavors you’ll find in a glass of American stout ale, along with a spritz of citrus hops, a bit of dry-roasted bitterness and a fluffy head of foam. Next time your neighbor invites you over to eat chicken in mole sauce, Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s Velvet Merlin Oatmeal Stout is the one beer to take with you.

lager amber ale pale ale stout

f you order a beer in any respectable bar in America, the malted beverage you’re offered will likely have a name like “Mephistopheles Stout” or “Dead Guy Ale.” Chances are good it will have been brewed not in big steel vats in St. Louis but in small batches two towns over. The brew master won’t carry a clipboard or punch a time clock; he’ll probably be a ponytailed hipster who quit his IT job last year to make beer out of pumpkins and baking spices. Freestyle American craft beers made by small, independently owned brewer-ies are the rage all across the U.S. But like other brews they fall into four dependable categories.
