The election frenzy has finally come to an end, after a record turnout this year. This year saw more voters flock to the polling booths and getting their fingers inked, with a record 66.4% turnout. With the voting over, exit polls now indicate that Narendra Modi could very well be the next Prime Minister, the share market also reacting strongly and positively to this prospect. The exit polls also indicate that this could be the Congress party’s worst performance ever. The IPL has reached its Indian leg, with Chennai Super Kings ruling the points table with 16 points, followed by Kings XI Punjab on 14 and Rajasthan Royals on 12. This IPL has had no major controversies so far, except for the fact that Chennai has lost all its matches thanks to a legal tussle with the municipal authorities. This, in turn, has got Bangalore the rights to host the finals. As they say, Chennai’s loss has become Bangalore’s gain! Happy Reading ! A majority of 272 seats in parliament is needed to form a government, although that is often achieved with outside support from regional parties. India's staggered voting, spread over five weeks to reach the country's 815 million voters and move security forces around its varied terrain, ended on 12th May, 2014. The BJP-led alliance is forecast to win 270-282 seats, according to a poll conducted by research group CSDS for the CNN-IBN television network. It forecast just 92-102 seats for the coalition led by the Congress party. Several national exit polls over-estimated the BJP's seat share in the last two general elections in 2004 and 2009. The Congress party went on to form coalition governments on both occasions. Another poll by Nielsen for ABP News, showed the BJP-led alliance hitting 281 seats. A third, by Cicero for the India Today group, predicted Modi's alliance would take between 261 and 283 seats, and pollster C-Voter forecast a tally of 289. One outlier poll, by Today's Chanakya, showed the BJP emerging with enough seats to rule on its own.

The Editor’s Column

Dear Student,

Welcome to the May edition of the Abhyaas Law Bulletin. The election frenzy has finally come to an end, after a record turnout this year.

This year saw more voters flock to the polling booths and getting their fingers inked, with a record 66.4% turnout. With the voting over, exit polls now indicate that Narendra Modi could very well be the next Prime Minister, the share market also reacting strongly and positively to this prospect. The exit polls also indicate that this could be the Congress party’s worst performance ever.

The IPL has reached its Indian leg, with Chennai Super Kings ruling the points table with 16 points, followed by Kings XI Punjab on 14 and Rajasthan Royals on 12. National:Highest-ever voter turnout recorded in 2014 polls

The 2014 Lok Sabha election has earned thedistinction of recording the highest voter turnoutever at 66.4%. This surpasses the 64% pollingwitnessed in the 1984 polls.The extraordinary voter enthusiasm in these pollswas evident from the fact that 15 of the 35 statesand Union territories recorded their highest everturnouts.. The top performers in terms of turnoutswere smaller states and UTs such as Nagaland(88.6%), Lakshadweep (86.8%), Tripura (84.3%),Dadra and Nagar Haveli (84.1%) and Puducherry(82.2%). Among the bigger states, West Bengalimpressed with 81.8% turnout (likely to go up oncefinal figures come in), Odisha (74.4%), AndhraPradesh (74.2%), Kerala (74.0%) and Tamil Nadu(73.7%).However, the politically crucial states of UttarPradesh and Bihar were among the lowest-rankingstates in terms of turnout, faring better than onlyJammu & Kashmir. While UP recorded 58.6% overallturnout, Bihar saw 56.5% of its electorate turning upat polling stations. Militancy-hit Jammu & Kashmirrecorded 50.1% polling.Ahmedabad (East) witnessed a 19% compared to2009, while it was 18% in Jaipur, 17.5% in Lucknow,14.9% in Kanpur and 14.8% in Surat. Mumbai SouthCentral and Mumbai South recorded 14% and 12%surge respectively, as did Delhi (13.3%), Bangaloreconstituencies (10%) and Gurgaon (11.3%). Varanassaw 55.34%.

Congress gets ready to shield RahulWith exit polls painting a grim prospect for Congress,Union minister Kamal Nath rejected suggestions that alikely poor show in the elections will be a reflection onRahul Gandhi's leadership, saying he was never part ofthe UPA government. He said the Manmohan Singh-led government was not able to convey to the peopleabout its programmes and all the good work it wasdoing."Election results are a reflection on what people'sperception of the government functioning was ... Todismiss them (good work) and say we did nothing in 10years is wrong. Rahul Gandhi was never part of thegovernment," he said in defence of the party's vice-president who led the Congress campaign.BJP has taken a dig at Congress over the issue, saying itwill blame Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and othersbut not Rahul and his mother and Congress presidentSonia Gandhi if it fares poorly in the polls."The mantra in Congress is to blame others in case ofsomething bad while giving all credit to CongressPresident and Vice President. Therefore, the PM willbe blamed and others too. There will be talk aboutcollective responsibility," party spokesperson PrakashJavadekar said.

CBI probe in Sharda Scam: SCIt will be a major setback for the West Bengalgovernment as the Supreme Court handed overinvestigation into Saradha chit fund scam to the CBI.The Court has also asked the Central Bureau ofInvestigation (CBI) to investigate ponzi scheme scamsin Odisha.According to sources, the apex court bench headed byJustice T.S. Thakur said that the investigating agencywill also look into any other ponzi scheme involved inchit fund scam in West Bengal, besides Saradha.Handing over the investigation to the CBI, the courtsaid that the investigation by the West Bengal Policedid not make any headway in inter-state ramificationof the scam.The court said that the state police has not been ableto make any headway in the conspiracy angle, moneytrail and the seizure of the properties related to thescam. It also asked CBI to look into the moneylaundering dimension in the chit fund scam. The WestBengal government, all through the hearing of thematter, had strongly resisted the plea for handing overthe investigation to the CBI.

EU bans Indian Alphonso mangoesThe 28-member European Union (EU) on 28 April2014 imposed a temporary ban on import ofAlphonso mangoes and four vegetables from India.The ban will come into effect from 1 May 2014.The ban was imposed following the decision of thegrouping’s Standing Committee on Plant Health,who in 2013 found 207 consignments ofvegetables and fruits imported from India to EUwere contaminated. Those consignments werecontaminated by pests like fruit flies andquarantine pests. The bans are on mangoes,Eggplant, the taro plant, bitter gourd and snakegourd.

The 15th International Indian Film Academy Awards 2014 announcedThe 15th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA)Awards 2014 was held in Tampa Bay, US from 23April to 26 April 2014. This was held for the firsttime in US and Hollywood star John Travoltas andKevin Spacey made appearance at the IIFA awards.The awards included haag Milkha Bhaag as BestPicture, with Best Direction bagged by RakeyshOmprakash Mehra, Performance in a LeadingRole going to Farhan Akhtar and Performance in aLeading Role (Female) taken by DeepikaPadukone.

South Korean ferry drownsA South Korean ferry carrying 459 passengers andcrew drowned off the south of the KoreanPeninsula. Maritime Ministry had rescued only 164passengers and as many as 293 people were stillmissing.The ferry ran into trouble some 20 kilometres offthe island of Byungpoong.The 6825 tonne ferry was identified as the Sewol.It was carrying about 470 passengers including thestudents and teachers towards a route to JejuIsland. Jeju Island is located at about 100 km (60miles) south of the Korean peninsula.As reported, the ferry tilted over 45 degrees onthe port side with helicopters flying overhead, andthen fully capsized with only its stern visible.

No IPL matches in Chennai; Bangalore gets final The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Councilrevamped the schedule by taking away all the matchesfrom Chennai while June 1 final was allotted toBangalore.The council was forced to take the decision after theTamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) said that it won'tbe possible to host any of the IPL matches in Chennaidue to an ongoing legal tussle with the municipalauthorities over the construction of three stands at theM.A. Chidambaram Stadium.Besides Bangalore, Kolkata were also awarded with aqualifier since the May 14 match at the Eden Gardensbetween KKR and MI was moved o Cuttack due toelections in West Bengal.Ranchi will also host the remaining two since the councilfelt that continuity was important.Mumbai also got two of the four big matches but missedout on hosting the grand final. The Brabourne Stadiumwould host the eliminator slated for May 28 whileWankhede got the qualifier May 30.

Eight franchisees of Indian Super League of AIFFannouncedThe names of the eight franchisees of All India FootballFederation's (AIFF) Indian Super League (ISL) wereannounced. The names were announced aftercompetitive bidding was held for the rights to own eightsoccer teams in the ISL, scheduled to be held inSeptember-November 2014.During the bidding, each winning bidder paid about 25million dollar for a 10-year contract for each of the eightsoccer teams. The base price of each time was fixed at12 crore rupees and the total money spent on acquiringeight team was 120 crore rupees. The highest price of18 crore rupees was paid for Kolkata team.Delhi was bought by Sameer Manchanda led DenNetwork, while Bengaluru wnt to Sun Group.Goa was taken by Dattaraj Salgaocar, Shrinivas VDempo, Venugopal Dhoot of Videocon while Guwahatiwas bought by John Abraham & Shillong Lajong. Kochi isowned by Sachin Tendulkar & PVP Ventures and Kolkatawas purchased by Sourav Ganguly, HarshavardhanNeotia, Atletico Madrid, Sanjeev Goenka and UtsavParekh. Ranbir Kapoor and Bimal Parekh boughtMumbai and Pune was bagged by Salman Khan withKapil Wadhawan and Dheeraj Wadhawan of theWadhawan Group.
