WelcomeThank you for being part of the Lawley Art Auction. We hope you have a wonderful evening viewing the artworks, enjoying wine & hors d’oeuvres and listening to performances by our Music students.

Now in its 15th year, the Lawley Art Auction is Mount Lawley Senior High School’s major fund raising event for the Specialist Visual and Performing Arts (SVAPA) and Music Programs. Funds are used by the SVAPA and Music Parent Support Groups to keep these programs engaging, contemporary, challenging and rewarding for our highly talented students. We aim to hone technical and artistic skill, creativity, curiosity and analytical thinking. Under the guidance of inspiring teachers, many young lives will be directly enriched, and futures brightened.

Held annually, the auction represents a tremendous commitment and partnership between artists, parents, business, community and school. We sincerely thank all of the wonderful people, who contribute in any way, to the success of this fundraising event.

Every year the bidding is exhilarating with a stunning array of artworks on offer. The funds generated by each auction have been put to good use purchasing equipment; funding the presentation of high-calibre theatrical and musical productions; hosting workshops with leading artists and performers; and contributing to students attending world-class performances in Perth and beyond.

In 2018 we are proud to present over 110 exceptional artworks by 90 talented artists. This is a testament to the quality and reputation of the event. It is exciting to see new artists as well as familiar faces who have supported the Mt Lawley arts and music students for many years. Collectors and buyers can purchase from a diverse collection of artworks including paintings, prints, textiles, glass, ceramics and sculptures.

This catalogue is both guide and informer; with pages dedicated to the auction process, the artists, the students, and the programs at Mount Lawley Senior High School that are constantly evolving to reflect their place in Australia’s vibrant arts scene. Please enjoy.

How to Buy Art

1 The main body of artwork can be viewed on the ground floor in Gallery One and upstairs in Gallery Two, and will go under the hammer by our auctioneer Mat Donelly in the auction room.

2 The Irving Gallery allows you to purchase artworks immediately, at a set price. The Irving Gallery is located upstairs, in a separate room off Gallery Two.

3 The always popular Silent Auction, located on the ground floor to the back right, includes artworks by both locally and internationally renowned artists.

Registration, Bidding and Payment

Payment and Purchase CollectionOn the Night• Purchased items (from successful Live Auction or Silent Auction bids, or from the Irving Gallery) can be taken immediately

once paid in full. • Payment may be made by cash, EFTPOS (credit card/debit card/savings), or online bank transfer.

Delayed Payment and Pick-up• A non-refundable deposit of 10% of the purchase price or $90.00, whichever is greater, is payable on auction night. The

balance is due on pick-up of the purchased item. Payment of the balance may be made by cash, EFTPOS or online bank transfer.

• Works will be available for pick-up from the MLSHS Senior School Building on Sunday 24th June 2018 between 1pm and 3pm. Photo identification is required for the pick-up.

Silent AuctionIn addition to the artworks available in the live Lawley Art Auction, we are running a Silent Auction of selected artworks, and donated products and services gifted by generous Perth businesses.

How to go about bidding:1. Complete a buyers bidding card at the registration desk to receive your

bidder’s number. 2. Place your written bid amount with your bidder’s number on any of the Silent

Auction items. 3. Check back at any time before item 70 in the catalogue (approx. 9pm) to

continue bidding on this item. 4. The successful bidders will be advised by SMS after Lot 75 of the

Live Auction. 5. You must pay for and collect your item on the night, or it will be passed to the

next highest bid. 6. Payment may be made by cash, EFTPOS, or online bank transfer.

Both Meredith’s and Louise’s generosity and support are very much appreciated by the school.

Thanks to the big-heartedness of local businesses you could also be the lucky winner of one of many awesome prizes in our: Supporters Raffle. The Irving GalleryEstablished in 2017, the Irving Gallery is an additional exhibition space running concurrently with the Lawley Art Auction. The artworks within the Irving Gallery are separate from the artworks available in the Live Auction. These artworks are available for sale with set prices, shown on the label of each artwork. Please see our Irving Gallery staff located within the space, for purchase information.

The gallery has been named after Dr Dale Irving, a true visionary and an outstanding Drama and Arts educator at Mount Lawley Senior High School for over 24 years.

During the creation of the MLSHS middle school, Dale brought together a Cross-Arts teaching method, seeking to bridge the gaps between the traditionally segregated arts disciplines of art, drama, music, dance and media. The Specialist Visual and Performing Arts (SVAPA) Program commenced in 2000.

Through her co-ordination of the program Dale developed an engagement with external industry professionals. She built an excellent reputation for the arts within the school and in the broader community, including links with the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, WAAPA and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, PICA.

Dr Dale Irving’s combined work ethic and profound love of the rebellious nature of art has built a program that has endured and prospered. The SVAPA program now continues under the guidance of Dale’s colleague, Moya Thomas.

Sean AdamasSean is an emerging artist and designer experienced in producing public art installations. His works are often cheerful with abstract and geometric elements. He likes to integrate playfulness and interactivity into his works wherever possible. Sean is also actively involved in philanthropy and recently painted a full-size fibreglass dolphin sculpture to raise funds for the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit at Perth Children’s Hospital. Sean has exhibited his works locally and internationally, including at Tokyo Design Week in 2015.

Artists

Shiva Amir-AnsariShiva is a West Australian artist who spent her childhood in Fiji, inspired by the wild beauty of the ocean. Her painting in this year’s auction references the poem ‘Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage’ [There is a pleasure in the pathless woods] by Lord Byron.

Greg AshGreg is a Western Australian artist who has been working in glass for over fifteen years. He uses various techniques to manipulate the glass to form pieces that should make the viewer question, ‘How did he do that?’ Pieces may use murrine, strip cut, mixed media, LED lighting, ‘boiled’ glass, wafers of glass, glass paint, glass powder and frit, tapestry glass and more in order to create high end bowls, wall panels and sculptures.

Warayute BannateeOriginally from Thailand, Warayute has been painting for over twenty years. He ran his own gallery in Thailand for six years and then moved to Australia to live in 2002. As well as working on commissioned pieces, he enjoys entering art competitions and has held two exhibitions. He has received a number of awards including the Corporate Award of the Manjar Art Award in 2008, Kimberley Art Prize winner of the Open Category and People’s Choice in 2010, and the Acquisitive Award at the Bassendean Visual Art Awards in 2015.

Diane BastickDiane took up painting in 2000. She is most interested in abstract work, life drawing as well as painting and landscapes inspired by the amazing colours in our Australian outback. She is a member of both North Coast Art Club and Wanneroo Joondalup Art Society.

Christine BlowfieldChristine is an acrylic artist living in the southwest of WA and enjoys painting what is around her. She sees gum trees and wildflowers daily and her aim is to engage the viewer so that they may also more fully appreciate something seen each day.

Marilyn BoastMarilyn has exhibited in the Mount Lawley Senior High School Art Auction eleven times, submitting paintings relevant to the music students. She paints with acrylics and passion, using vibrant colour and subtle shading to produce seascapes and landscapes of our beautiful country as well as birds, animals and people. Marilyn has won awards for her artwork and exhibits and sells frequently. Her artworks grace the walls of homes both here and overseas. Marilyn was born in New Zealand but now calls herself Australian.

Deborah BonarAboriginal artist Deborah Bonar creates vibrant works with immense visual power and complexity. Her paintings are bold kaleidoscopes of vigorous lines and dots. The spontaneous prismatic colours dance upon the canvas, reflecting a sense of positive energy, optimism, balance and harmony. Influenced by her Gija and Yamatji heritage, her artwork demonstrates the importance of place in forming cultural identity. Deborah has exhibited widely in WA, winning the coveted Cossack Art Award (Indigenous) and significant public art commissions, including works at St John of God Midland and Big Splash WA Art Trail. Lindy BoyleA West Australian artist, Lindy works from her home studio in Bayswater. She is well known for bold and colourful poppy paintings, as well as other large contemporary florals and abstracts. Lindy was Chairperson of the Bassendean Arts Society for a number of years and has been involved in many exhibitions in Perth. She began teaching and exhibiting in 2007. Maureen BradshawMaureen was inspired to start painting in 2014 by the artist Malini Parker. She has since taken part in courses with Malini, Steve Dyer, David Giles and David Green and was an artist in residence with David Giles at Studio 11 in 2016. Her works are mainly abstract or semi-abstract landscapes and aim to evoke some emotional feeling as well as incorporating colour and movement. She doesn’t usually work from visual references but from drawn memories of colour, shape and form.

Betsy BushBetsy learnt to draw by the side of her grandfather, who never went anywhere without a sketchbook and pencil. After sketching and drawing in pen and ink for many years, she developed a passion for oil painting, predominantly still life and landscapes. She has had very successful solo exhibitions, ‘The Joy of Six’ in 2007 and ‘Scene-Unseen’ in 2012, and has also exhibited in group shows. Betsy also works and exhibits textile and fibre arts. Betsy was selected to paint a cow for the Margaret River CowParade event in 2010. Her entry ‘Cow Patch’ can now be found grazing at Eagle Bay Olive Farm. betsybush@westnet.com.au

Stephen CastledineStephen prefers to use watercolour and enjoys drawing in unexpected ways. He held his first solo exhibition in 1987 and has participated in many exhibitions since. Stephen’s art is represented in private collections in Australia and overseas and he has won numerous awards.

Mikaela CastledineMikaela is an award-winning artist and published writer, with a degree in Science and an MA in Literature. She has been a professional artist for 25 years, working in collage and sculpture. She has won the Sculpture by the Sea Scholarship, Cottesloe 2013, the Sculpture by the Sea Inside Award, Cottesloe 2016 and was selected as a 2016 finalist in the distinguished Bankwest Sculpture Prize. She is represented in public and private collections in Australia and internationally.

Karen ChappelowKaren has been painting and sculpting in Western Australia since the early 1990’s. She is a mother of 3 children and finds peace in the process of creating new pieces. She is inspired by the human form and loves the curves, shadows and the muscular structure of the body. Her works often combine whimsy and abstract notions. Karen is currently compiling a series for an upcoming solo exhibition and continues to do commission work.

Janine CairnesA love of watercolour and the desire to capture the beauty of our environment and flora has inspired Janine to paint, and she regularly paints ‘en plein air’ (outdoors). She is an award-winning artist and has been published in the Australian Artist magazine. She has been involved in four solo and nine joint exhibitions and her works are sold through local galleries. She also participates in many local charitable exhibitions and her paintings are represented in private collections in Australia and overseas. She is a member of the Watercolour Society of WA and of the WA Society of Arts.

Yau ChauBorn in Guangdong Province, China in 1968, Yau studied painting with famous masters in Hong Kong and held solo painting exhibitions in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Shenzhen. He continued his arts practice after migrating to Western Australia in 1996 and has since won several awards for his paintings including the “WA Country Award” and an award of excellence in “Cathay Harmony Ode”, an exhibition of World Chinese Calligraphy and Paintings. He is now the owner of “WA City Lane Art Gallery” which specialises in mounting and framing traditional Chinese paintings, oil paintings and watercolours.

Phillip CookBorn and raised in the Swan Valley, Philip began his professional artistic career in 1969 when he exhibited with the Perth Society of Artists. He has held many exhibitions over a long career, collecting numerous awards including the 1975 Narambeen Art Prize, 1977 Albany Art Prize and 1978 Williams Art Prize. He works in several mediums, including pencil drawing, watercolour and acrylic, and is best known for his oil on canvas landscape painting. Paul DennisPaul’s current work is based on insects. Those small, rather ugly creatures that outnumber and surround us have inspired him to ‘collect’ them and create something beautiful. By playing with the juxtaposition of colours and finding ways to make shapes lift from the surface and shimmer, he aims to create images that arrest the eye and draw the viewer further into his painting.

Kerrie Di CataldoAn award-winning photographer, Kerrie has a particular interest in experimental and contemporary landscape images. Imagine time travel - back to a primeval landscape - where strange plants and trees make up the biodiversity of the ecosystem. The image for this year’s auction has been shot on a medium format Diana plastic camera and made up of multiple exposures on one film frame, drawing attention to the Tardis-like structure in the vegetation. Is this a photograph that depicts ‘reality’, or does it open up possibilities that may lead us to draw alternative conclusions? Kerrie is currently a finalist for the DUO-Percival Photographic Portrait Prize (Qld.) 2018.

Melanie DissMelanie’s current practice involves realist painting and drawing, collage, discovery and experimentation with materials, and getting back to the fun of creating art. She has participated in multiple group shows, both locally and in statewide art competitions. She held a joint exhibition in 2012, and was a category winner in the 2012 Cossack Art Award. Melanie grew up in the Swan Valley region of WA and has been a practicing artist since graduating from Curtin University of Technology with a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Art) in 2008.

Pippin DrysdaleAn acclaimed international artist and Master of Australian Craft, Pippin Drysdale’s career as a ceramic artist spans 30 years. Her passion for the craft merges with a love of the landscape, which has seen her travel across continents and in recent years has focused on the vivid desert landscapes of Australia. Working from her studio in Fremantle, surrounded by racks of wonderful pots in all colours and sizes, the landscape is an ever-present lure, the catalyst for work and the connecting point and anchor for each new development.

Regina Eccleston-WirthRegina Eccleston-Wirth treats life and artistic endeavour as one. Trained as a Theatre Arts & English teacher and Graphic Designer, Regina also likes the physicality of working with textiles. Her art practice is wide and varied, but has most recently focused on photography. Through the lens she enjoys ‘capturing the moment when the unique nature of an object becomes clear’. Regina’s work has been recognised in local and national competitions, and is represented in public and private collections around Australia and abroad.

Edward ChinEdward has been practising Chinese calligraphy all his life and learned from masters in Taiwan. He has displayed his work in exhibitions and has taught Chinese calligraphy in clubs, institutes, schools and the community for the past 40 years.

Sharon D CliffordSharon trained in textiles and taught handcraft and painting for many years. She is now a dedicated student of colour. Whether working with wet on wet watercolour technique or layering acrylics or pastels, she explores the variations a slight change can bring to the mood, seeking for the balance that allows the colours to sing together in harmony. Nick EconomoNick began his career as an artist in 1972 initially as a sculptor in awe of and inspired by Rodin, whose exhibition he had attended. He gradually leaned more towards painting, where his focus has continued for over 20 years. However, he has never abandoned his love for sculpting which is evident in the lavish, bold and liberal application of material. Nick’s paintings celebrate an extravagance of colour and texture embracing a somewhat impressionistic style using his own self-developed techniques to gain depth and texture. His work can be found in collections in Australia and internationally.Renia EdwardsEach of Renia’s works has a unique story, inviting the viewer in. She considers art a time stamp of a place and time in your life. Renia was born in New Zealand moved to Australia in the late 1970s. She lived and travelled in Europe for fifteen years with her husband, then moved to Perth in 2011. To take her mind off missing her friends and life in Europe, Renia leapt into a passion for art and began painting classes. She now has a studio at home where she creates and teaches in a beautiful garden atmosphere.

Neil ElliottNeil studied at Perth Technical College and developed his drawing and painting skills while pursuing a career in graphic design. Neil now merges the technical world of design with the emotive world of visual art, creating a style that is distinctively his own. His prime objective is to explore and have fun. He frequently works on board, as it offers a robust surface that allows him to glue, screw, nail or rivet items to the surface of objects that are usually recycled or found. He also facilitates sculpture workshops throughout WA, inspiring communities to create exciting work, while at the same time rescuing materials from becoming landfill.

Jenny Ellis-NewmanJenny’s art inspiration draws from her love of colour and contrasts. Her main subjects are sunsets, beaches, children and nature. Her preferred medium is acrylic but she also loves to experiment with mixed media and a variety of subjects and styles. She has exhibited widely in Western Australia and has sold internationally.

Marilyn FahieDrawing has always been Marilyn’s passion. After working in an art studio in the sixties she free-lanced for a few retail stores. Her interest in drawing people led her into courtroom illustration for twenty years. She is fascinated by the endless variety of peoples’ features. This taught her to work at speed and capture not only facial features but attitude as well. She has illustrated several books aimed at educating children on protective behaviours and she is currently working on a seascape commission.

Silvana FerrarioSilvana is a multi-award winning glass artist. Her inspiration comes from her experiences, memories and surroundings. She is intrigued by the geometry present in both man-made and naturally occurring structures, and its opposition to the fluidity of the natural elements. She particularly likes to use the fluidity of the glass when it is hot to give movement to her work, even with a structured subject. Plaid is inspired by textiles, particularly the weaving of different colours to create more. The glass ‘fabric’ is draped into the form of a vessel in the hot kiln.

Julian D FisherBorn in South Africa he is an esteemed and renowned international artist with his art having been commissioned in Japan, Hong Kong and King Sabuza’s Palace, Swaziland. His work has been bought by the Sheik Chamat of Bahrain. He has held many international exhibitions which were opened by the ex-Premier of WA, Sir Charles Court and another by the ex-Chancellor of UWA, Professor Dr Alex Cohen. His art has been commissioned in Australia by Woodside offshore petroleum, Wesfarmers, BHP steel, Galvin etc. He is listed under old South African Masters by the Harper Gallery in South Africa. On the ‘rocks’ in Sydney, his work has sold to many travelling visitors at the Argyle Gallery.

Tashi FaceTashi was brought up among the birds and beasties of Western Australia’s Kimberley region, the oldest lands of our world. While at first she would draw the odd and curious creatures around her with smeared dirt or the scratchings of sticks, she has gone on to work with more civilised tools. Scribbling away with traditional mediums, she draws the animals around us, not just by their outward appearance, but with an aim to capture an impression of their inner character.

Pauline FranklynPauline is a highly skilled artist who has been working in textiles for some years, creating her unique pieces. Miik GreenMiik is a researcher and advocate for contemporary art in Western Australia, and was awarded a doctorate in arts practice through Curtin University 2015. Keith HamiltonKeith is a West Australian artist with extensive art experience, most especially in oil painting. Marie HammatMarie’s painting explores the spirit and memory of the Australian landscape. Nidia HansenNidia is a contemporary artist exploring the aesthetic intersections between art, nature and cultural backgrounds. She visualizes her feelings through color, abstraction and the use of line, experimenting and transforming materials and investigating the relationship between the forms, colors and textures that are inspired by nature and cultural iconography. Geoffrey HillierGeoffrey is a realist artist who enjoys painting landscapes and places of interest. He has exhibited and sold his art works in local community art exhibitions, and has also participated in successful solo and joint exhibitions at the Tresillian Arts Centre in Nedlands, Ellis House Art Centre in Maylands and as an invited artist for the Arthritis Association in Shenton Park. Since 2010 Geoffrey has been a member of the Royal Perth Hospital Heritage Society and has painted images of heritage buildings in and around Perth, giving the society non-exclusive rights to print images of some of these paintings for fund-raising.

Martin KiddMartin’s first exhibition was in 1976 at Cremorne Art Gallery in Perth. Since then he has had a number of solo exhibitions in WA and in Spain, where he lived for ten years. Jasna KarajcicJasna is a WA artist who usually works with textiles and oil paint. Jasna found six prints of wedding photos in front of a beautiful house in her neighbourhood whilst the ‘big dilemma’ about legalising same-sex marriage in Australia took place. For this piece, she spent hours painting over the photos, making her own story about the subjects and remembering all the other marriages around her that survived and others that did not. Loretta LincolnLoretta was a founding member of North Folk Studios, a ceramics artists’ cooperative. She has extensive experience teaching art, design and craft and she regularly exhibits her artwork in local exhibitions and throughout the southwest. Loretta explores the medium to create unconventional vessels; slabs of marbled clay represent the dynamic earth, finely balanced on a wheel thrown base. The interaction is Taoist - yin/yang, feminine/masculine, positive/ negative, black/white, natural/machined, irrational/rational, uncontrollable/control, romantic/classical. Loretta is also influenced by Japanese ceramics.

Narelle Manser-SmithNarelle is an award-winning artist who is inspired by light and movement in nature. She loves expressing these qualities through an abundance of texture, blending and layering colours with glaze in a variety of styles. The complex layering of techniques and the ambiguous nature of her subjects will lead to years of viewing pleasure. Narelle exhibits extensively throughout WA and has her work represented in Robert Juniper’s private collection along with other collections both here and interstate. Lesley MarshallLesley began painting when she came to Perth in 2010, as she was amazed by the light and architecture. She enjoys trying to record the scorching heat and unique heritage buildings of WA.

Lawrence MarshallLawrence was one of the original committee members of the Lawley Art Auction. He began photography in 1976 and in 2009 was awarded a US Navy medal for photography teaching. He works with high contrast black and white, intaglio, reversal processing and continuous tone and digital formats. In 2014 he published a book of Pilbara landscapes and the companion volume ‘Travelling in Australia’s South-West’ is now available. Sue LeemingNew Zealand born, Sue’s current practice extends ideas of abstraction, landscape, identity and spirituality. She experiments with the physicality of paint and process and has recently explored a more fluid approach, allowing the imagery to spring from the process, with the mark-making, layering and building of the surface becoming equivalent to the images themselves. Sue is interested in plasticity and a more psychological response to our cultural and physical environments. These paintings are about honouring and acknowledging where we come from and welcoming and embracing the future.

Lynette KinnearLynette is inspired by people, animals and landscapes and paints primarily in oils, acrylics and pastels. Lynette has been painting and drawing since she was a very young child, and she sold her first two oil paintings in a gallery when she was just 13. She continued to accept commissions while raising a family and has had two very successful exhibitions. Lynette has also written and illustrated two children’s books.

Sunita McWhinneySunita is a Perth based artist immersed in a community of artistic and creative family and friends. She has a Bachelor of Education, majoring in Early Childhood Education & Art and has studied Art and Design at TAFE. Sandra MenegolaSandra’s passion for painting began at a young age when she grew up in Perth surrounded by art. Her paintings reflect moments in her life when she was inspired by Australian and European landscapes. She has devoted much time and effort to developing her painting skills and trying new ideas and styles. Sandra displays her artwork in many different exhibitions throughout the year and is an active member of several art societies.

Myra MitchellMyra is a multi award winning artist who started painting after designing and making jewellery. She paints both abstract and semi-abstract pieces in a contemporary style. Her preferred medium is acrylic and her art is characterized by a wide range of palettes including earthy tones, pastels and vibrant colours. Myra has exhibited widely and has also held six solo exhibitions. In 2017 she was a finalist in the Ravenswood, Australia’s largest art prize for women in NSW. Myra is represented at Margaret River Gallery where she recently had a group exhibition.

Judy NashJudy is a very accomplished artist who has studied under prominent artists both in Australia and America. She has exhibited in several galleries within Western Australian and her artwork has been purchased for display in Australia and overseas. Judy is proficient in many different mediums but is currently focusing on using acrylics on a wide variety of subject matter.

Margot NattrassMargot’s recent floral works introduce a new theme in her art, creating highly realistic paintings with great attention to detail. She is drawn to creating vast canvases of large-scale compositions. She often paints single bold images or cropped compositions of contemporary arrangements. In each image Margot explores the elegance and beauty of nature and the feminine flowing movements of the petals. Margot prefers to work from photographs of flowers from florists, markets or picked from gardens. This helps create the magic of the moment, moments that often go unnoticed in our frantic lives.

Kelly NgataiKelly finds inspiration in the places where she spends the most time: with her family, at the beach and in her backyard. At the moment she paints mainly commissioned work and for display homes. Kelly holds equal parts in her heart for education, good design and enjoying life. Kelly was previously a Design and Technologies and Visual Arts teacher at MLSHS.

Vivenne PetersVivienne graduated from the Claremont School of Art in 1984. From 1987 to 1994 she lectured in Fine Art at TAFE while painting and exhibiting her own work. From 1994 to 2004 she lived in Spain, working as an artist and jazz musician. During this time she had solo exhibitions in Spain and Amsterdam as well as participating in mixed exhibitions in Spain and Gibraltar. Since returning to Australia, she has been painting and exhibiting regularly, in solo and mixed shows. Her work is held in public and private collections in Australia and overseas.

Linda O’BrienLinda is an established Perth based artist who has exhibited for many years. She is an enthusiastic pastellist, branching out into oil/acrylic on canvas to experiment with new ideas. Colleen RintoulColleen works in many mediums and finds most insipration in landscapes and water. She studied at Claremont Art School and TAFE and has taught at secondary schools specialising in art and music. Colleen also has experience in theatre design and has designed and painted backdrops for puppet theatres, museums and private homes. Her work has received awards at various city and regional art exhibitions and at the Alfred Cove Art Society. Colleen is a curator at the Atwell Art Centre and Gallery.

Sandy RobertsonSandy has been painting in watercolour for many years. She has taught and exhibited within Australia and overseas and has won many awards. She was made a fellow of the Watercolour Society in 2015. Currently Sandy is working on keeping her watercolour paintings fresh and contemporary by experimenting with other media. She started her career in art as a china painter and has pieces on display at both the Australian National Gallery in Canberra and in the Western Australian Art Gallery collection.

Ileana RozitisIleana finds inspiration in nature, faith and relationships. Ileana loves working with silver because of its malleability and subtle colour, and usually oxidises her pieces to get an antique look. Currently her focus is to create small silver images that evoke a memory, idea or feeling in the viewer through the symbolism in the design. With this piece ‘Windswept’, the viewer may recognise the power that is in nature or they may relate it to a life experience.

Fleur SchellFleur Schell is an internationally renowned ceramic artist. Through The Clay House Arts Centre, Fleur has nurtured the Ceramic Arts in Western Australia. “I tell childhood stories through porcelain that reflect a time of innocence, simplicity and purity. I was sent to boarding school as a child so themes of childhood naivety, wonder, love, freedom, and adventure are very nostalgic for me. I am grateful that my own memories of childhood have been reawakened through my children, as they share with me their perspective of a world less effected by irony, conflict or anxiety.”

Jude ScottJude is an award-winning West Australian artist, specialising in watercolour. Jan QuinnJan is a retired art teacher who now paints for pleasure. She trained in Melbourne, completing a Diploma of Art majoring in textiles. Shabbi PhelpsA renowned Perth artist, Sharon, better known as Shabbi, began working with clay in the 70’s and later extended her creativity to include acrylics on canvas. She has entered various exhibitions, successfully selling large pieces and winning several art awards including the Fred Killick Art Award in 2015. Her inspiration comes from colour, nature and the elements which are reflected in both her clay pieces and paintings.

Ivanka SiljanoskiIvanka is a local artist and photographer residing in Bayswater, Western Australia. During the last 5 years Ivanka has participated in a number of community exhibitions in Perth and the wheatbelt. Ivanka’s interests are abstract forms and shapes as well as landscapes. She is passionate about the flora and fauna of this state and her orchid photos and poems have been published in magazines about Western Australian flora.

Mitzi SmithMitzi has created artworks primarily in the world of graphics, ceramics and illustrative art. She is currently exploring the joys of fine art with a mixed media approach to make for more interesting and exciting imagery. She is a multi prize winning artist including the Royal Agricultural Art Prize. As a student she studied at the Royal Melbourne Art Institute, followed by experience in London, Canada and the US. She spent many years teaching at Claremont Art College, and is now now based at Tresillian Art College, passing on her art knowledge to a new crop of artists.

Meredith Sonder-SorensenMeredith began painting at the Claremont Art School after retiring from physiotherapy due to illness and has since studied under several renowned artists. What started as a hobby has since turned into a passion and she is now a full-time painter. The last year has been about the use of colour to create robust explosive landscapes and portraiture in its rawest form.

Alexandra SpargoAlexandra learned the technique of realism at Claremont School of Art in 2009 and has since been involved with artist in residence, solo and joint exhibitions of her work and commissions. She recently won first prize for her pastel submission of an ‘Alaskan Malamute’ at the Melville Art Awards and has just been nominated as a finalist for the Mandorla Art Awards. She is currently in her third year at ECU Mt Lawley, studying a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts, specialising in visual arts.

William StranskyWilliam was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1958 and began painting while living in the south of Japan in 1989. In 1995 he held his first solo exhibition at Mick’s Jazz Club in Yatushiro City and over the next seven years he held a number of other solo exhibitions in Japan. Returning to Perth in 2004 his style changed from delicate and colourful landscapes to more abstract compositions, but always referencing the brushstrokes of Japanese calligraphy. William is a confident artist, producing rich and experimental works in a space where control implies an even greater creativity.

Wade TaylorWade is an emerging artist from Perth, Western Australia. While working primarily with paint, his practice often extends to include investigations in sculpture and ceramics. With a bold painterly style, most works explore issues surrounding Australian identity and landscape. These issues feed common themes including notions of suburbia, nostalgia, the everyday, and cultural artifacts. Wade has completed three successful solo shows and appeared in group shows such as ‘Mate’, which won best visual arts show for the Perth Fringe Festival in 2015.

Sioux TempesttSioux constantly pushes the boundaries of her practice by traversing different mediums, producing paintings, digital works, large scale murals and public art. Her technique is intuitive, based on natural emotive responses to her surroundings and environment. Her current works explore the fusing of abstract expressionism and street art. Sioux has been involved in numerous group shows and has held seven solo exhibitions. Among other achievements, in 2017, Sioux was a finalist in the Busselton Art Award and People’s Choice Perth Winner in the Cliftons Art Prize. Her work is held in public collections in Perth and private collections internationally.

Ken TaylorOriginally from Perth, illustrator & designer Ken Taylor works primarily within the music industry and is well known for his striking rock posters. He has designed posters and album artwork for many bands including You Am I, Crowded House, Queens of the Stone Age, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Florence & the Machine, First Aid Kit, Sigur Ros, Bob Dylan & The Rolling Stones. Working through MONDO with some of the worlds’ biggest movie licenses his recent limited edition silkscreened movie posters have received significant acclaim. Ken has won numerous awards and is preparing to take a large solo show overseas.

Delma WhiteDelma is passionate about raising awareness of the fragility of our unique bushland areas, aiming to convey in her work the excitement of discovering rare wildflowers. Capturing light is a key element in her detailed paintings. Delma has exhibited in The Florence Biennale, The South Nevada Museum of Fine Arts and the Friends of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens Art Awards. Her works are held in collections of Belmont City Council, Gosnells City Council, Lake Grace Shire, Sons of Gwalia Mining, Fellowship of Christians and RSM Bird Cameron.

Danica WichtermannDanica enjoys contrasting colours and sculptural forms. Within her works she has chosen to focus particularly on the fragility of Western Australia’s flora, creating pieces which feature our endangered and threatened species. She encourages the viewer to take a moment from their busy lives to pause and contemplate the fleeting beauty that is so unique and special. Her passion is to encapsulate much that is different from things in other lands. Danica participates in many exhibitions, has won numerous awards for her work and is represented by several galleries. Kshanti WikramanayakeKshanti works with oils, watercolours, ink and pastels and produces large scale paintings with oils. She has worked as a professional artist and teacher for over 40 years, holding 5 solo exhibitions and 7 exhibitions with her students. She was a finalist at the 2017 Claremont Art Awards and her next solo exhibition will be in the City of Cambridge in October 2018. Jill YellandDesigner Jill Yelland has been working in glass for 16 years. Her work is inspired by colours, textures and forms of nature from our enviroment in Western Australia. A Malay Almond tree leaf, which had fallen to the ground in Broome was the inspiration for Jill to create this sculptural glass piece. Its multiple colours and the flowing shapes of the leaf highlight the beauty that nature creates. Josh WellsJosh Wells is a photographer and artist based in Mount Lawley. His internationally exhibited fine art work explores identity and sense of place. Louise WellsLouise has a passion for colour and finds pattern in architecture and nature a continual influence. Her work is inspired by our untold or hidden stories and she uses a variety of techniques such as screen printing, stamping, block printing, shibori, hand dyeing and transfer printing, usually in bold and vibrant colours. Many of her works involve stitching layers of selected fabrics together and then cutting away sections to reveal hidden layers beneath the surface. Glynda WardGlynda began painting in the mid 1980s while undertaking a Bachelor of Education degree. In 1990 she completed the first year of a Visual Arts degree at Edith Cowan University but then returned to full time teaching. Glynda continued her artistic endeavours by attending courses at Claremont Art School, Fremantle Arts Centre and Tresillian Arts Centre. She has been painting regularly for fourteen years and continues to exhibit in group exhibitions. Her paintings feature women and colour.

Joie VilleneuveFor Joie, this work comes from a deep desire to explore symbolic and metaphoric representations of flora and fauna in realistic, imaginary and illustrious ways. Her work celebrates the essence of flight and song through a textural and mixed media approach to convey intimacy beyond beak and wing, inviting the viewer to come along on a fantastical inner journey. Her work is held in various collections including New York, St. Paul and Saudi Arabia.

SVAPA (Specialist Visual and Performing Arts)The unique Special ist Visual and Performing Arts (SVAPA) program at Mt Lawley SHS promotes excellence across the Arts. SVAPA is based on contemporary practices of working in multiple disciplines, blending drama, media, music and visual arts. It provides an educational journey that enriches students’ learning through the development of arts ideas, skil ls, processes, creative and crit ical thinking.

SVAPA immerses students in rich and challenging arts experiences in partnership with practicing artists through extra-curricula workshops, camps, early-morning classes, artist-in-residency programs and a wide cross-section of arts excursions. Students develop and perform in high quality annual music & theatre productions and regularly have the opportunity to perform at school and community events. Exciting l inks have been established with Edith Cowan University (ECU), Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) and Perth International Arts Festival (PIAF), Co3, West Austral ian Youth Theatre Company, The Blue Room and Bell Shakespeare, among others. All collaborations engage students in performance, production, dialogue, appreciation, and connection. Most importantly, they present the opportunity to fal l in love with theatre, music, images and stories.

Many students’ SVAPA journeys have taken fl ight to success in the arts, with our alumni recognised in the arts community across an incredible range of locations and professions, from Hollywood blockbusters to European opera stages and international f ine art festivals.

As the SVAPA program is school-based and not funded by the government, fund-raising is crit ical to its success. The wonderful Lawley Art Auction is an immense part of that, and its distinctive style both supports our program and reflects its core values.

Our contributors, organisers, volunteers and supporters work in creative and eff icient harmony to make the Lawley Art Auction both possible and fabulous. Their tremendous and inspiring efforts are humbly appreciated by the staff and students of MLSHS and exemplify why we do indeed fal l in love with it al l, year after year.
