Amy Bellante was married in October 2010 and chose hot pink roses and stargazer lilies as the main fl owers for her cascade bouquet. Her bridesmaids’ dresses were a platinum-gray shade, so she chose bright-colored fl owers as the focal point of the wedding. “I wanted the fl owers to be the only color, so my bouquet had to be simple, but elegant,” said Bellante. Her aunt, who is a fl orist, allowed her to design the bouquets, which were inspired by magazine photos she had seen. Following the trend toward personalized weddings, many brides are choosing to incorporate features of their gown into the bridal bouquet. According to Flower Shop Network, such embellishments as pearls, beads and faux jewels are appearing more oft en in bouquets. Small crystals scattered throughout a cluster of roses or orchids can add extra sparkle and interest to the bouquet, and a few pearls nestled among a bunch of daisies or lily of the valley would beautifully com-plement a white or ivory-colored wedding dress. “Today’s bouquets have more sparkle,” said Lori Zirkle, of Stanley Flowers in Topeka. Th e idea of adding items to the bridal bouquet is a trend that has become more common re-cently in Topeka. “I have made bouquets that have ribbons with the bridesmaids’ initial charms attached at the end,” said Zirkle. She also said that she has been using more unusual colors - such as lime green and hot pink - in bridal bouquets. Of course, some brides will still choose to feature more tra-ditional fl owers for their bouquets, which can complement modern weddings. ‘Engaged couples are thinking about the environmental and social impact of their big day,’ writes Ritzy Ryciak for Conscious Choice (June 2006). ‘They are seeking organic and ethically sound options, and that demand is creating more green choices for gowns, flowers, salons, cakes, ca-tering, gifts, jewelry, and even honeymoons.’ More choice means engaged couples don’t have to sacri-fice style to save the earth: There are hemp couturiers and high-end organic caterers waiting to meet the demand. Those who don’t know where to start looking can check out wedding planning resources like OrganicWeddings.com and GreenEleganceWeddings.com, which both offer national directories that link to chemical-free salons, or-ganic bakeries, and eco-lodging. Traditional vendors are also more apt to offer environ-mental options, according to In Balance (Summer 2006). So it doesn’t hurt to ask the stationer to print invitations on recycled paper, the caterer to deliver leftovers to a shel-ter for the homeless, or the florist to arrange seasonal, pes-ticide-free flowers. Requesting local flowers and produce will also help reduce waste and food miles, Tamanna Kal-har points out in Red Pepper (July 2006), as will providing a coach service to shuttle guests to and from the ceremony or reception sites. Couples can put an ethical stamp on their wedding from the minute the ring comes out of the box. ‘Choose a vin-tage diamond ring or one set with a different gemstone, since many [diamonds] come from Sierra Leone or An-gola, where rebel military groups profit from mining op-erations and terrorize the people,’ writes Kristine Hansen in Yoga Journal (May 2006). Some couples are even forgoing the gift and money pile-up. ‘If you find the whole notion of asking people to throw money at you distasteful, encourage your guests to make donations to a political advocacy group or charity you support,’ suggests Michelle Goodman in Bust (June/July 2006). Sign up at charitable online registries like JustGive.org or IDoFoundation.org. That way, rather than costing the earth, your wedding will be paying it back. 4/b

Tom and I met by chance one night when he pretended to be Irish, accent and all. It was a charade he kept up until the next day, when he admitted that it had started as a joke that “got away.” I found it rather amusing and agreed to give him another chance. Our relationship is so natural and easy, and we just fit perfectly. After dating for several months, Tom and I spent two weeks touring Europe together; it was during this trip that we decided to get married. There wasn’t a true proposal-- it was a foregone conclusion. I left Tom in Paris to come home, and Tom spent six months in Copenhagen studying architecture. It was during this time apart that we began to plan our wedding.

We chose The Oread’s 5th Floor Terrace as the location for our ceremony and reception/party. It has an amazing view of this beautiful little city, and it is just modern enough for our taste. It is also situated on the KU campus, which was an excel-lent site for photos, and close enough to down-town for our guests to walk. We hired Kelli Szrot of Red Door Event and Design to assist us in wedding planning, helping design the decor, arranging the flowers, and just basically running the show. Tom and I were going to be entertaining quite a large number of guests. With that in mind, we had an intimate family rehearsal dinner at Pa-chamama’s, the local restaurant where we met, followed by a larger cocktail party for family and

out of town guests at The Oread on the evening before our event. Our wedding day was perfect. The weather co-operated, and the mood was joyous and fun. Our wedding colors of orange and cyan really popped against the bright blue sky and the stark white ta-ble linens. The puzzle piece, a symbol of our love since a conversation very early in our relationship, made an appearance on our invitations, on our cake, and on the gift bags. Our flowers, by Red Door Event and Design, were absolutely breath-taking and my bouquet was to die for. The setting was hip, modern and fun. We had a 30 minute cocktail party before our ceremony so that our guests could mingle and have a drink in hand

when we walked down the aisle. Our ceremony was short and sweet, performed by the groom’s stepfather and with vows written from the heart. It was so wonderful to be in front of all of our loved ones to promise to love each other for the rest of our lives. At the reception, we served passed and buffet-ed hors d’ouvers, and the signature cocktail was simply the addition of cyan rock candy swizzle sticks. Our DJ used vinyl records, and the dance floor was packed all night. It was truly an epic party, and it continued late into the evening (and into the early morning!) at a dance club nearby.
