An initiative of the Rotary Club of Young, students practised their driving skills under different senarios including driving under the influence of alcohol, managing the distractions of mobile phones, pedestrians and animals crossing the road and heavy traffic situations. On completion, students received feedback including how many times they crossed over the white line, driving infractions including failure to give way and if they had hit any vehicles, pedestrians or animals. Principals reportThe Henry Lawson High School accepted a $3000 donation from the Grenfell Agricultural Bureau. The funding will be utilised to upgrade our sheep enterprise facilities. This gesture is very much appreciated and will go a long way towards supporting our student’s educational needs. Thank you to Robert Johnson, Ken Schaefer and other members of the Grenfell Agricultural Bureau for considering our school.

Our Year 11 leaders and staff have been visiting our feeder primary schools as part of our transition program. The purpose of the visits is to introduce our Year Adviser, Mrs Nicola Mitton, and Head Teacher, Ms Megan Crossley, to the Year 6 students and field any questions about the upcoming transition schedule and our school. Thank you for welcoming us into your schools. A big thank you to our Year 11 students who did a fantastic job sharing their high school experiences.

In 2018 the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) introduced the HSC minimum standard to ensure students have the key literacy and numeracy skills for life after school. From 2020, students in New South Wales will need to demonstrate a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy to receive the HSC credential. Our Year 10 and 11 students have been sitting the tests over the past week with great success. Students and parents will be informed of the results in the coming weeks. We will be braving the cold and conducting the annual cross country event at the Grenfell Country Club on Friday. Have fun and good luck to all participants. Full details will be in next week’s newsletter.

Next week Anna Hunt will be competing at the Combined High School Soccer Championships in Sydney. Anna has been selected in the Western Region open girls’ team. They will play against all the combined high school teams from all over NSW. Day one sees them playing Sydney North and the NSW invitational team with the draw for day two and three dependant on Tuesday’s results. From this carnival two teams as well as shadows will be selected to play at the NSW All Schools Carnival in week 9 of this term. Good luck and all the best. Your school is very proud.

Premier’s Sporting ChallengeThis week the sporting leaders class ran PSC Week to encourage students to participate in physical activity. Throughout the week leaders from Years 9 and 10 ran a range of sports during lunch times, including ping pong, touch football, basketball, indoor cricket and multisport. While participating in the sports sessions, students were tracking their activity to fundraise for new sports equipment for the school. The week was a success with great participation across all years.

I am teaching in HSIE: geography and business studies with Mrs Lisa Griffiths. I come from Condobolin and have links to the area with my family growing up and living in the Bribbaree/Quandialla area.
