I love to see the sweet signs ofspring appearing at this time ofyear, I’m always inspired towalk around our beautiful parksand countryside seeking outthe clusters of spring flowersand listening to the happy anduplifting bird songs. One of myfavourite walks in April isthrough Foxwoods inRhiwderin, the intense scentof the carpet of bluebells isdelightful, it’s so calming tojust stand and be still amongst thebluebells and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.
Wishing you all a Happy Easter.

In 1796, Edward Jones ofBristol leased, for a term of 21years, all veins of coal and ironore in 53 acres of land calledMachen Mountain, Waun Fawr,Coed Waun Fawr and land onthe east side of the Ebbw Riverin the tenure of RowlandPhillips, all within the parish ofMachen.
J ones expected his investmentto prove highly profitable dueto the imminent opening of the
Monmouthshire Canal, his leaseincluded a lower payment untilthe canal opened. However, hehad problems with the tenant ofRisca Farm (now Risca House)whose fields he had to cross. Hewrote to Sir Charles Morgan'When I took the colliery therewas no bridge over the river to goto it. I was consequently obligedto build a bridge, when I hadfinished it, Rowland Phillips wouldnot let me have a road throughhis farm to the bridge. I wasobliged to take the bridge downand rebuild it in another place, ata heavy expense, when I hadrebuilt the bridge he would not letme have a road through his farmto the canal until Sept 1798.’
He completed the balanced-worked gravity controlled inclineand tram road from his coalworkings across the river and upto the canal in March 1799. Later
in that year, William Coxe wastravelling around Monmouthshireand wrote 'On my way to Risca, Icrossed a bridge over a rail roadformed by Mr Edward Jones, twoparallel rail roads are carried fromthe canal to the opposite side ofthe Ebbw river, along which twocars are drawn up and let downat the same time by means of anengine; they appear to pass eachother alternately like buckets in awell, a boy descends with theempty car nearly midway, afteradjusting the machinery, it isagain drawn up with the loadedcar which empties the coals intothe boats of the canal.’
Further letters to Sir CharlesMorgan complained about thecanal being unusable for manydays of the year due to shortageof water in hot summers and icingup in cold winters. In July 1801 hewrote to Evan Phillips 'The canalis a bad business and until somealteration take place, I expect noprofit from Waunfawr.’ As a resultof his complaints Jones receivedsome reductions in his paymentsto Sir Charles Morgan and in1801, he obtained the tenancy ofRisca Farm moving in with hisfamily.
At a Select Committee of theHouses of Parliament in 1810,enquiring into the prices paid tocanal companies for shipping
coals and duties paid on coalsshipped from South Wales ports,Jones stated that he had takenseveral people into partnership inthe Waun Fawr Colliery in 1799and over £60,000 had been spentwithout any return of capital. Theyhad two steam engines, a largewater wheel, three miles of privaterail road and four inclined planes, one of which carried the coals upto the canal. There were fourshafts between 40 and 70 yardsdeep and three levels each abouta half-mile long. They raise about110 tons of coal per day. The pithas been overwhelmed withwater taking two years to get itout. The produce of this collieryhas not paid the wages byseveral thousand pounds for thelast five years.
Jones appears to have given upin 1812. By 1814 he was back inBristol trading as a coal merchantand in 1820 he moved to London.

As we got older many of
us climbed the steps
twice a week. The films
changed on Monday and
Thursday. In the fifties, films
were continuous from 4.30pm
Monday to Friday. On
Saturdays there were
two separate
houses that resulted in long
queues. These often stretched
along the pavement from the
steps to the road junction
opposite the Park Gates and
back down again to the steps.
When the Palace opened in
1913 it was the first
purpose built
cinema in the Valley. On the
12th December 1913 a licence
to use the ‘Premises for
Cinematograph Exhibition’ was
granted to Mr Wyndham J.
Pritchard of Merthyr, for a
period of one year from the 11th
December 1913.
The following article appeared
in the South Wales Argus on
Friday the 12th December 1913.
New Palace Opened: - Theopening of the Risca NewPalace, which has beendesignated The temple ofrecreation and education, tookplace on Thursday evening. Four Stepsto Heaven
By Bernard Osment
Every Saturday morning most of us old boys, and girls, whowere born in Risca or Pontymister before the early 1950s,walked up the four steps into the Palace Picture House.Saturday morning meant one thing to us, going to the pictures. With enough pennies to buy some sweets and a ticket to getin, you sat down to watch a film show, ‘especially for children’.Usually a Three Stooges film, a Cartoon - Donald Duck, MickeyMouse, Popeye etc, a ‘Cowboy film’ - the Durango Kid,Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, etc and to finish, always a‘Serial’ ending with a cliff-hanging scene that left you sittingon the edge of your seat, next Saturday couldn’t come quickenough.

standard and the coloured onessimply entrancing. The latterincluded a plot based inSwitzerland and displayed muchgorgeous scenery and costume, while the film entitled ‘The BlackDiamond’ was really great, andintroduced to the audience thegrand scenic effects of theAfrican jungle with the wildanimals roaming about. It tookover three hours to go throughthe whole programme. Thepianoforte accompaniments byMr. J. Rosser were most aptlychosen. The accommodationleaves nothing to be desired. The hall is brilliantly lighted, theseats are all tip-up chairs, several page boys are engagedselling sweets and chocolate, while a number of attendantsare at the disposal of thepatrons. In all 900 can becomfortably accommodated.Mr. A. Davies, the generalmanager of the company, is anexperienced person who will, itis certain, keep the hopes thatthe Risca people haveentertained with regard to thisnew cinema, which is a credit tothe place. The resident manageris Mr. A. Guy. Among thepictures shown this week areselections from the ‘AnimatedGazette’, and include someexcellent reproductions takenfrom the present MCC tour in
South Africa. Mr. Davies intendsshowing pictures from theGazette week by week. Shows were continuous from
3pm – 10.30pm, with a
children’s performance on
Saturday at 2pm. Following the
outbreak of WW1 in 1914, the
cinema was used to hold
Recruitment Meetings, often
held in the interval between the
pictures. Concerts,
Presentations and Welcome
Home Receptions continued to
be held there during and after
the War.
For many years the Palace was
managed by ex- clown Harry
Litho. The Register of Voters for
1922 to 1926 lists Harry and
Claude Litho (his wife), as
resident at the Cinema,
Tredegar Street. The Litho’s
residence was two rooms at
street level, one either side of
the front steps with no inside
connecting passageway,
access to them was from the
pavement outside. Electricity for
the projector and lighting was
provided by a generator driven
by a gas engine. At night, when
it was switched off, the couple
lived by candle-light. In the
14 swdirectories.com March/April 2018
evenings they were often seen,
in their night clothes, carrying
their candle sticks, outside on
the pavement going from one
room to the other.
In 1916 eighteen year old
Amelia Morgan of Rogerstone
was hired. She carried out
clerical work for Mr Litho, and
being an accomplished pianist
she assisted Mrs Litho in
playing the music to
accompany the silent films.
Amelia, affectionately known as
Milla, kept a diary in which she
recorded not only the names of
the films being shown, but also
comments on the films and the
daily happenings in the cinema,
Risca and Rogerstone.
In 1918 she mentioned the
names of local boys that had
been killed and the wounded
returning home from the War.
She also wrote of the epidemic
of flu in the area. Sadly on the
26th July 1918 it took her life. In
1919 the Risca Palace
Company amalgamated with
the Welsh Cinema Company to
form Welsh Palaces Limited.
From the mid 1920s, Miss Vera
Walker and her two sisters, all
accomplished musicians,
provided the accompanying
music for the silent films.
Like most cinemas the floor
sloped down towards the
screen. Often when the river
Ebbw flooded the seats at the
lower end were under water,
when this happened the area
was roped off and the film show
continued. Following a serious
flood in the mid 1920s, to cure
the problem, the floor was
raised and levelled. In 1927 Mr
Matthew Truran was appointed
manager. In the Voter’s Register
he is listed as Resident at the
Cinema from 1927 to 1932. In
1929 the films were continuous
with two changes weekly.
Prices were 4d. to 1s.2d.
As part of the building
refurbishment in early 1930s, a
balcony was added. Electricity
was connected and a sound
system installed. At the same
time the two rooms that had
been used as living
accommodation were
converted into shops. The one
to the left of the steps, a sweet
shop, run by Mrs. Evelyn Smith,
the other, a gents’ outfitter, for
many years occupied by Mr
Reg Humphries of Crumlin. In
1935 the owners, Welsh Palace
Limited, went into liquidation
and the Palace was taken over
by Risca Cinemas Ltd. owned
by Sidney Attwood of Kineto
Lodge, Cross Keys. In 1935 the
films were continuous with two
changes weekly. Prices 7d. to
1s. In 1937 posters advertising
forthcoming pictures described
the Palace as the most up-to-
date theatre in the valley,
installed with the latest
ventilation system. Shows were
continuous on Monday to
Friday, from 6pm – 10.15pm.
On Saturday there were two
houses, 5.45pm and 8.30pm.
There were two changes
weekly, Monday and Thursday.
Prices were 7d. to 1s.
On the death of Sidney Attwood
in May 1941 ownership passed
to his wife Annie. She remained
in control up until March 1944
when Mr Marcus Goldblatt of
Cardiff took over the business.
Up until it ceased showing films
in 1963 the Palace was
registered in his name. For most
of the Palace’s life film shows
were twice on Saturday and
continuous on Monday to
Friday. However during WW2
the continuous performances
were reduced to one showing.
There were two changes
weekly. Prices were 7d. to 9d. In
1945 the cinema closed after
being damaged by a fire. It
reopened in October 1946;
shows were continuous from
4.30pm on Monday to Friday
with two houses on Saturday.
Prices were 1s. to 2s.
The name most of us will
remember is Mr Nicholls, the
Manager. George Nicholls
March/April 2018 swdirectories.com 15
worked as a Projectionist before
becoming the Manager in 1939.
Many couples will remember
the light from his torch spoiling
their romantic moments. Others
will remember him walking up
and down the side isles
squirting scented water from a
chrome plated syringe into the
smoke laden air.
With the rise of television in the
late 1950s there was a marked
decline in the number of Palace
patrons. In an attempt to attract
more people, in September
1961 Bingo was introduced on
Mondays and Tuesdays, with
films being shown from
Thursday to Saturday. At the
beginning of November, Bingo
was discontinued and films
reintroduced.
As the decline in audiences
continued, in April 1963, now
under new management, Bingo
was reintroduced. Sessions
were held on Sunday, Monday
and Wednesday, with
films on Thursday,
Friday and Saturday.
In May it was
announced that full
time Bingo would
commence on
Monday 3rd June
1963.
No longer a
cinema for many
years the building
was used as a
Bingo Hall and
Social Club.
When this
ceased in about
1990 the empty building was
boarded up and left to
deteriorate. Luckily, as one of
the first purpose built cinemas
in the area, on the 22nd
October 1999 the Palace was
declared as a grade two listed
building.
After being derelict for many
years the site was redeveloped
at a cost of £2.25 million.
Fortunately the front facade and
the four steps were saved. On
the 9th December 2011 the
Palace Cinema building
reopened its doors to the public
as a library and customer
service centre.
This year to mark the105th birthday of RiscaPalace, Risca Library isappealing for local peopleto share any memories orstories they have of thebuilding, from its life as acinema, bingo hall orlibrary. At the end of theyear the project will bemade into a Memory Bookthat will be housed in apermanent collection.Memories can be added toour physical book on site,or emailed [email protected]

APART FROM THE MAJOR DAMAGE that continuesto be done to our local landscape by theinconsiderate minority with their off-road vehiclesthere is also the everyday wear and tear of thepathways by the footfall of the innocent visitor to thispopular beauty spot.
CTS often lobbies the local council and works with thecommoners to ensure serious scarring is effectively dealtwith and in the coming year CTS hopes to address theminor problems on our monthly volunteer days.
A recent meeting with Cadw identified areas where, particularly on the scheduled ancient monument itself, people tend to wander from the path and so start to widenand erode the path with their continual footfall. We will beeffecting repairs to these areas with seeded matting andsoil or rock infill.
With some repairs it may be necessary to cordonoff the area to allow the repair time to establish –it may look unsightly for a short while but thebenefits will soon become apparent. Soplease be considerate if you come acrossthese repairs and also be aware of anydamage you may be unwittingly creating yourself.
We’ve already got a long list of work for the comingyear and a short list of volunteers so if you fancy helpingout a little, get in touch or watch our website forannouncements of workdays planned.
A Busy YearAhead forTwmbarlwm
Any RoadUp…
CTS meet at the car park below Twmbarlwm’ssummit for a litter pick and volunteer workday on thelast Sunday of every month to which everyone isinvited, it’s not all hard work and it’s a greatopportunity to find your way around up there. Weorganise walks and other events up the mountain andat Crosskeys RFC throughout the year so watch ourwebsite and Facebook page for details – come andjoin us some time. www.twmbarlwm.co.uk
IT’S NEARLY THAT TIME of year again when all roadslead to Twmbarlwm. The 30th of March is Good Fridayand that’s when, according to local tradition, peoplefrom miles around come to trek to the summit of themountain like many generations before them have done.
We at the Twmbarlwm Society saw that thetradition was starting to wane a little and tenyears ago you would only see a couple ofdozen people up there on the day. We,therefore, hijacked the idea a few years ago
and made it our own with “The Hot-Cross-Bun Walk” – and nowadays there is likely to be
a few hundred people making the trek to the top. There are many different routes you can take, some
more arduous than others, and everyone has their ownfavourite route – you can even get most of the way thereby car, but that’s cheating. A few different routes aredescribed on our website.
CTS organises a group walk, leaving from the StonyBridge, Pontymister, that takes a direct route straight upthe hill through Ty-Sign, onto Mountain Road and so onto Twmbarlwm. Not the most picturesque to start withbut it is faithful to the route that pilgrims may have takencenturies ago on their way from Llantarnam to Penrhys.
The Friends of Cwmcarn Forest Drive will be leadinga group from the Cwmcarn Visitor Centre and there willbe other organised groups from Cwmbran – please visitour website for more details of the organised events.
We also want to encourage as many other groups aspossible to organise their own walk and use theoccasion to raise the profile of their organisation (carrya flag to let us know who you are) - get in touch with usand we will include your details on our website.
Most people still like to make their own way up theTump by their preferred route just like their parents andgrandparents did before them. We’ll be happy to seeyou however you get there – it’s always a great familyday out and CTS distributes hot cross buns to everyonewho makes the climb (on a first come first served basis).

A Spring in the Step Across RiscaAt long last, Newport is fi nally on the map for all the right reasons.
Th e regeneration of our city is continuing with lots of recent announcements detailing exciting new development plans creating more offi ce, leisure and retail space in the centre, the scrapping of the Severn Bridge tolls, jobs being created by new and existing companies and house builders continuing to construct houses across Newport.
Th ese factors are combining as is our resurgence on the football pitch. Individuals and families from outside the city are choosing to move here to enjoy the opportunities presented both old and new. Th ose already here are benefi ting from the rebirth of our city and choosing to stay here or moving within the city.
Th e impact is increasing demand for houses in Risca. We have buyers eagerly waiting to view properties as soon as they become available and we are achieving a high percentage of full asking prices.
“ From the moment we met with John to the handing over of the keys, we received a fi rst-class service. Th ey were happy to work around our busy diaries and kept in regular contact. Th ank you all – very happy to recommend.”Deb Williamson, Newport

The second half of 2017brought a varied selection ofoutings for GG. In September,we travelled to Barry and theAmelia Trust Farm for theirHarvest Festival Open day, which is the biggest fund raiserof the year. This was a returnvisit, and the previous year wehad danced in June in thesunshine at their summer fete, but unfortunately on 9thSeptember the weather wasvery changeable and thedecision was made to clear aspace inside, with some of thecraft stalls, for us and the TaiKwando demonstration thatfollowed us. We displayed afew of our traditional Welshdances and then got some ofthe audience (mainly children)to join in with us for somesimple ceilidh dances.Later in September on the 28thwe paid a return visit to RiscaU3A’s monthly social meeting togive them a taste of Welshculture, which included somedance displays and a chance forU3A members to join in. Thesession was once again puttogether by Barbara Griffiths withdance instructor Ceri, and shewas able to re-use that format, translated into Welsh, for anevening at Stow Park ChurchCentre with Newport WelshSociety on October 20th, andvery successful it was too. Before that, on October 17th, wetravelled to Shirenewton to theprimary school
as part of one of thechildren’senrichmentsessions. Thechildren get tochoose whichsubjects theywould like forthese sessions, and dance isone of thecategories on offer. We gavedance displays to two sets ofchildren, got them to join in, andBarbara interspersed this withsome oral Welsh culture. Our final booking of the yearcame on a very snowy 13thDecember at Llanhilleth MinersInstitute, for Coleg Gwent’s adultWelsh learner’s Christmas party. The evening was very wellattended despite the weather, and well respected Welsh folksinger Gwilym Bowen Rhys waspart of the entertainment alongwith GG. Unfortunately, we had to
cut short ourprogramme as feeding 120people took a lot longer thananticipated, and the evening ranout of time. We only had a chanceto display three of our prepareddances, and then call just threedances in Welsh for a twmpath(ceilidh) that was supposed to lastwell over an hour. Disappointing, but as long as the audienceenjoyed what we did, we arehappy. We hope to be invitedback this year when hopefully thetimings will be better.
Gwerinwyr Gwent Diary
Gwerinwyr Gwent would love to recruit some new dancers, especially men! Welsh dance steps are basic and few, it is just thepatterns of the dances that need to be learned. We would also bevery pleased to encourage extra musicians to join our little band.Practice night is Thursday 8-10pm at the Graig Community Hall,Bassaleg (opposite the Ruperra Arms). Either just come along, ring 01495 271953 for more details, or check out our website

To reach the village of Skenfrith, continue along the B4347 forabout 3½ miles and at the cross-roads turn left onto the B4521and continue for ½ a mile toreach Skenfrith. The name ofSkenfrith may be translated fromthe Welsh, Ynys Cynfraeth, as theisland where Cynfraeth (a 6thCentury Welsh Chieftain) builthis fortress. The castle, mill, church and inn make anattractive centre of the littlevillage.Soon after entering the village theremains of the old castle will beseen. This was one of the firstcastles to be constructed in thecounty, and the first owner wasBach, the brother of Aeddanowner of Grosmont. This firstcastle was probably a simplewooden construction situated onan earthen mound. After theNorman Conquest, the castle wasgained by Hamelyn the conquerorof Gwent and then passed to hisnephew Brian de Wallingford. Itcontinued to change handsfrequently in Norman days, evenbeing sold by King John to SirWilliam de Braose, Lord ofAbergavenny, for three steeds andten greyhounds. The castle wasvalued for its strategic position butused mainly as a garrison, sopossesses little of the romantichistory of some of the later castles. In 1200 the castle was rebuilt instone by Hubert de Burgh tobecome a powerful fortress, plainly
built with circular towers at thecorners of the rectangleformed by the curtain walls. At some point, during the re-building work, there was aheavy flood in the low-lyingvalley which caused thecastle to be severelyinundated by the risingwaters. Hubert then filledthe interior of the first castlewith river gravel and commencedto build a new castle on top of theoriginal. Archaeological diggingin the 1950s actually exposed thewell-preserved remains of the firstcastle hall, which had been buriedin the gravel from 1220.The main entrance to the newcastle was formed through thenorth curtain wall, accessing thecentral Keep. It was circular inplan, with three storeys and abasement used as a dungeon or for
storage. The River Monnow guards theeastern facade and the curtainwalls were originally moated, utilising water taken from theriver. The millrace, to the localwater mill, was at one time part ofthe castle moat. There would, originally, have been a drawbridgeacross the moat accessing thecastle entrance. The mill is locatedon the south side of the castle onthe site of the medieval mill.

Skenfrith church has an attractivehalf-timbered tower with awooden dovecote roof, and isagain quite large for what is now asmall village. It is medieval inorigin dating from about 1168,extended in the 14th century andalso in the 16th century. It waslater restored in 1896 and again in1909. The construction is of oldred sandstone, with a two aislenave, a chancel and west towertopped with a dovecote belfry.
Inside the church is a finely carvedaltar tomb, which is the monumentof John Morgan, the last castlegovernor in the 16th Century, andalso his wife Anne. Notice also theoak Governor's pew, standingaside from the more recentordinary pews. A glass-frontedcase, mounted on the wall, contains an ecclesiastical copemade from coloured silks. It hasbeen suggested that it was madeand given by Queen Eleanor, wifeof King Henry III, when lodging atthe castle, whilst her husband wasfighting the Welsh. However, expert modern opinion dates thecope to the late 15th Century. The church is dedicated to StBridget of Kildare an Irish saintfrom Kildare, where she had beenan abbess for a monastery thatunusually catered for both men
and women. Her effigy can be seenon the gable over the entranceporch. Just inside the porch islocated the remains of an early13th Century Holy Water stoup. The church also was rebuilt instone by Hubert de Burgh in the13th Century. De Burgh wasresident and Lord of the manor atthat date, later becoming ChiefJusticar under Henry III.Skenfrith churchhas a peal of six
bells and the village inn, adjacentto the Monnow Bridge, isappropriately named ‘The Bell’. Theinn was once a 17th centurycoaching inn and was tastefullyrestored in 2001. It has flagstone
floors, oak beams, antique andperiod furniture. There are elevenguest rooms with en-suitebathrooms, the restaurant has wonawards and has an excellent winelist, all making it a comfortableplace to stay. The proprietors of thehotel have created some interestingcircular walks, starting from andreturning to the Hotel. A map anda guide describing the footpathsand identifying points of interestsin the locality are provided.
Having
completed ourexploration of Skenfrith we willnext continue on to the final castleof the Trilateral – White Castle.

Mercifully, Christmas passedpeacefully enough, with awhimper, one might say, but theyear end continuing into earlyJanuary took on a rather moremanic tone.28th December. With a great dealof snow on the ground, especiallyin the Beaufort-Brynmawr area,we had a call resulting from anadult swan flying into high tension(National Grid) cables. The depth
of snow probably helped toprovide a soft landing, and apartfrom a small burn mark on theleading edge of one wing, wewere able to pick up a very luckyswan and released it a few dayslater into Cardiff Bay.3rd January. A desperate callfrom Lydney Town Lake. In 2017the resident pair had producedjust one cygnet. The callconcerned the arrival of another
cygnet from goodness knowswhere. Almost immediately theintruder, for that is how he wouldhave been perceived by theresidents, was set upon by bothresident adults. At the time, thecaller, for a while, was somehowable to reduce the ferocity of theattack by virtue of the fact thatthe action was taking place closeto the near bank. By the time wearrived over an hour later, thebattle had moved out to theisland; it says a lot for theresilience of large cygnets thatthey are capable of surviving thefearful battering which weobserved, and about which wewere powerless to do anything…well not quite totally powerless.
A Busy End to 2017;
I wonder how many of our readers remember the Saturdayevening satirical show on BBC (in black and white) 'That Wasthe Week That Was', compered by David Frost, and with theintroductory song of that title sung my Millicent Martin. Well,2017 certainly was the year that was, with, one way oranother, for the second successive year, over 300 swan callsattended to.

Theinitial thought, especially as itemerged a boat belonging to thelocal angling club was beingmade available, was that wewould be able to catch theexhausted cygnet, and then re-unite the adults. In the event, the wide, flatbottomed boat was totallyunsuited to the task, with close tozero capability in either the speedor manoeuvrability departments, particularly as the cygnet certainlyhad no wish to be caught, totallymisunderstanding our motives!Thank goodness, our mostsupportive friend Mark, with histrusted kayak had alwaysintended to take the whole of thistime off work, and so was able tojoin us for our second visit toLydney early the following day.We felt the only way we couldprovide the cygnet with a chanceof survival, because thesedisputes are a fight to the death(by drowning), was to board thecob overnight, use Mark's skilland expertise to catch the cygnetand then to release the cob backonto the lake. And that isprecisely what we did, although,as you might expect, the cygnetdid not make it easy for Mark, butthat was a contest which he wasalways going to win. With theaction successfully concluded, and having regard to exactlywhere we were, it seemed our
obvious next move, apart fromthe obvious matter of releasingthe cob back onto his hometerritory to rejoin his family, interms of providing the bestenvironment for the traumatisedcygnet was Jan's Swan Rescuesanctuary near Drotwich.4th January. While we weredealing with the problem atLydney (day 2), we had a call fromTredegar Park, a small matter ofan hours drive away. The battlebetween the resident adults thereand their remaining off-spring hadbeen going on for some time, andin fact was destined to continuefor at least another two weeks, causing those who knew about itgreat concern. The message thistime was that one of the cygnetshad been driven off the water, was out on the grass, sufficientlyfar from the water's edge to offera realistic chance of a capture, ifwe could get someone there intime. Fortunately, Dorothy andBrian were available, and weresuccessful in catching the cygnetand making him safe; that stillleaves two cygnets at risk fromthe adult male. While all this was going on (stillonly 4th January), seriousproblems were emerging away tothe north of Hereford. Thetechnical term is 'outage'; othersrefer to it as a powercut. Anumber of these had alreadybeen reported, all the result ofswans flying into power cables, and so causing a short-circuit. Ifthe bird survives, as well can beimagined, the injuries are
horrendous, but in this case all, atleast five were fatalities. Weneeded to investigate. So it wasthat Lydney and Droitwich werefollowed by a route home viaMarden, some eight miles to thenorth of Hereford, not the mostdirect route, but needs must. Tograsp the full magnitude of theproblem, we visited this rural partof Herefordshire twice more in thenext three days. In this time, wetook many photographs andmapped the area in order to briefWestern Power Distribution(WPD), in the hope andexpectation of them being able tofit flight diverters to the relevantcable spans as quickly aspossible. In practice, this isexactly what was achieved.Thankfully, WPD are responsiveto dealing with this issue. The reason the problem occurredat all was because the localswans, we counted not less than60 (40 adults and 20 juveniles)had found fields of kale whichprovides ideal winter grazing forthem. Local residents informed uskale had in previous years beensown in fields on the oppositeside of the Moreton-on-Lugg toMarden road. Here, the crop layunderneath the cables, but inmoving a matter of yards to thesouth east, the flight path for theswans to and from the nearbyriver necessarily took themthrough the cables.Well, that was the first week ofJanuary; it seems the tone hasbeen set. And so it turnedout...watch this space!

Raising awareness for MACS -two marathons in one week Just yesterday I found my first
ever medal, Great South Run
2007, I realised I have been
running for more than 10 years
and the milestone had just
passed me by. For 10 years I
have run, not always far and not
always! But I find myself coming
back to it; to keep fit, to
challenge myself but most
importantly to find solitude.
Running has become part of me
and something I have always
done just for me, until now! This
April I take on the challenge of
running two marathons in one
week to help raise awareness
for a small but amazing charity:
MACS helps support children,
and their families, who are born
without eyes or with under
developed eyes (registered
charity 1161897).
As a glasses wearer, I am at
times frustrated that I can’t see
without them but this cannot be
compared with those who have
little or no sight. Recently, I had
the chance to help a visually
impaired child learn how to run.
Something I have just taken for
granted!
In April, I will be running for
those whom it is not easily
accessible. Every time I put on
my trainers I remember to
absorb my surroundings and
enjoy every step because I can.
You will find me on the canal
path from Newport to
Cwmcarn, often incorporating
the Sirhowy Valley for double
digit runs, or you may even see
me running to Newport or the
Riverfront Parkrun.

The lowest of the dams in thesequence of four built in thevalley of the Elan River isCaban Coch dam. It is thesimplest and most functionalin appearance of all the dams, resembling a natural waterfallwhen the reservoir is full andthe dam.The Birmingham Corporation
agreed and an Act of Parliament
was passed for the compulsory
purchase of the total water
catchment area of the Elan and
Claerwen Valleys. In 1893 the
building work began, a railway
line was constructed to
transport the workers and
thousands of tonnes of building
material each day, this took
three years. Local rock was only
suitable for use inside of the
dams. The hand-chiselled
facing stones were transported
from Glamorgan. On 21st July
1904 King Edward VII and
Queen Alexandra opened the
Elan dams and water started
flowing along 73 miles of
pipeline to Birmingham. The
whole of the Elan scheme had
cost £6 million and employed
50,000 men in total.
An average of 360 million litres
of water a day is extracted from
the Foel Tower to the Severn
Trent water treatment works.
The Foel Tower stands 171 feet
above the Frankley Reservoir in
Birmingham. The gradient of the
aqueduct maintains a flow of
less than 2 miles per hour and
the water takes one-and-a-half
days to reach Birmingham.
The River Elan is compensated
with 68 million litres of water a
day from Caban Coch. This can
be increased to 232 million litres
per day so that South Wales
can also benefit from this water
as the River Elan flows into the
River Wye from which water can
be transferred in times of
shortage.
I was fortunate to visit the Elan
Valley on a beautiful sunny day
last year, just after a prolonged
period of heavy rainfall. The
spectacular view of the water
cascading over the dams
together with the graceful Red
Kites flying overhead was
breathtaking. This really is a
peaceful and tranquil place that
makes you feel grateful to be
alive and privileged to
experience the beauty all
around us.
This spectacular scenery is
slightly less than a two hour
drive to from Newport and is
well worth the effort. On an
average it rains 235 days a year
on the Elan Estate so, for the
perfect day out make sure you
check the local weather
forecast before you leave.
