to be honest, I don’t remember focusing on the fact that NDA was an all-girls school when I was a student here forgrades 7-12. My brother went to Boston Latin School – which was all boys then – so single-gender education was just theway it was in my family. What I do remember about my NDA experience is that no one was allowed to take a back seat andstay in the shadows. We were taught to form opinions and defend them. We were taught to question and to seek out theanswers. We had opportunities for leadership and for developing communication skills. We were taught to be independentand interdependent at the same time. We were taught that we had a responsibility for the improvement of society. We weretaught that faith was a foundation for our life and that we had a role in the new Vatican II church.

After NDA, I attended a single-gender college as well, exposing me to the same style of education for four more years. Itwasn’t until I was in graduate school that I was back at a co-ed school. It was quite noticeable to me that the men often hadthe first and loudest voices in the classroom. There were only a few of us women who spoke up or led group discussionsand we were graduates of single-gender schools.

My first experience teaching was at a co-ed Catholic high school. I was so accustomed to girls taking leadership roles andbeing active in the classroom that it was quite a shock to see how quiet and uninvolved girls were in class. Most were afraidto answer questions, or to appear smarter than their boyfriends, or to come across as smart at all! They never ran for classpresident, but always ran for class secretary. It was the rare girl who tried out for the math team.

So as I look at our young women here at NDA, I am so proud of all that they accomplish. I see the campus ministrycoordinators learning how to organize group action, peer mentors nurturing our youngest students, so many of our studentstaking five years of math or science courses, young women confident enough in their language ability to live with familiesin France, seniors whose SAT averages are 300 points above the national average (and 200 points above the archdiocesanaverage), actresses on stage and athletes on the fields, the only all-girls robotics team in the area, and on it goes. The storiesI hear from our alumnae prove that the good news does not end with graduation.

Thank you to our parents who are so supportive of our programs and of the girls’ efforts. Thank you to our alumnae whoare such great role models and who live out the values of their NDA education every day. Most importantly, thank you tothe faculty and staff here at NDA who work with our girls each day, urging them on, showing them all that is possible.

NDA is busy preparing for reaccreditation by the New England Association ofSchools and Colleges in the Fall of 2010. The Association guides public and privateschools through structured self-evaluation, peer review, and consistent follow-up.“What is exciting about this process is that it allows each one of us to take a closelook at who we are, what our goals and objectives are, and to clearly identify ourvalues,” explains Principal Kathleen Rowley Colin ’89.

As a first step to accreditation, the existing mission statement was revised to betterreflect the values of the Academy. This revision took place last school year with theinput of faculty, staff, the Board of Directors, and the Corporation. The new state-ment reads as follows:

Notre Dame Academy is a vibrant, Catholic, college-preparatory learning community, sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. The Academy guides young womenin their personal faith formation, challenges students to pursue academic excellence, andencourages social responsibility on behalf of global justice.

In the coming months, faculty and staff will be involved in extensive committeework examining program areas such as communication, governance, and enroll-ment. A full report will be submitted to NEASC in October 2010.

Some of the statistics published included:

• By the end of the year, women will be the majorityin the workforce

• 57% of all college degrees are earned by women

• Women make 75% of the buying decisions intheir homes

The researchers found that 76 percent of those theysurveyed felt these changes were positive for our society;80 percent saw them as positive for the American economy.

So if our society is no longer a “man’s world,” it begs thequestion: is an all-girls’ school still necessary? Is single-gen-der education still relevant in the face of increasing equality?

Survey Says

According to more than 1,000 alumnae of girls’ schools sur-veyed by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools (NCGS)in 2005, the answer is a resounding – yes! These collegefreshmen were asked to evaluate their high school experi-ence and preparedness to transition from high school to col-lege, and beyond. The majority of respondents, 93 percent, said they were very or extremely satisfied with how theirschools prepared them for college. When compared to theirpeers who attended co-educational schools, 99 percent ofthe alumnae felt more or equally prepared to interact withfaculty, and 97 percent felt more or equally prepared forpublic speaking.

Cornelius Roirdan, a professor of sociology at ProvidenceCollege and author of Girls and Boys in School: Together orSeparate?, examined student outcomes in single-sex and co-educational schools for over two decades. He says, “Single-sex schools help to improve student achievement.” He citesstrong role models, reduced gender stereotypes in curricu-lum and classroom interaction, and an abundance ofleadership opportunities.

Fostering Leadership

Courtney Murray Russillo ’00, an English teacher at NotreDame Academy, cherishes the leadership positions she held asa student at NDA, and sees the same appreciation in her stu-

dents today. “As a student I wanted to take advantage of allthe opportunities NDA offered,” she says. “I was president ofa club and a member of the varsity golf team, which was justone of 10 in the state at that time.” She questions if she wouldhave achieved these goals in her town’s high school.

Her senior world literature students share that sentiment.Recently, during a class discussion about behavior in a same-sex environment, Russillo asked the students about theirown behavior. One student admitted she likely would nothave pursued her role as class officer in a public school. Andthere was an overriding belief that leadership positions thatmust go to girls at NDA typically are held by boys in co-edsettings.

It’s a notion shared by the NCGS, which says in girls’schools, students not only enjoy equal opportunity, but everyopportunity. Self-confidence is pivotal to turning knowledgeinto success. In single-gender schools, students are better ableto accept academic challenges and express themselves with-out the social pressures associated with teens.

Kathleen Rowley Colin ’89, principal at NDA, echoes theNCGS findings. “Attending a single-sex high school allowsa young woman to develop into the person she truly is.These schools emphasize the importance of students find-ing their voices in a constructive, productive, and mean-ingful way.” Colin adds, “At NDA we have open discussionsabout what it means to be a woman. This alone would notbe possible in another environment.”

Head of the Class

In addition to leadership opportunities, student govern-ment, and other co-curricular activities, research shows thatstudents in single-gender schools are also leaders in the class-room. The Cooperative Institutional Research Program atthe Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA pub-lished a report that highlights higher academic orientationamong alumnae of all-girls’ schools.

The 2009 study showed that women who attended single-gender high schools outperformed their co-educationalpeers on standardized tests and they entered college with

TIME magazine and the Rockefeller Foundation released a study examiningthe status of women in America. Their efforts were aimed at assessing how the averageAmerican feels about a number of gender issues and to determine if the “battle of the sexes”is truly over and “if so, did anyone win?”

This fall,

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

greater confidence in mathematics, public speaking, andcomputer skills. In addition, the research revealed thatalumnae of single-sex schools were three times more likelyto pursue a career in engineering. This statistic was in keep-ing with the 2000 NCGS study, which found that 13 per-cent of respondents intended to major in math or science.

Colin isn’t surprised by these statistics because, as an alumnaof NDA as well as an all-female college, she understandsfirst-hand how students are nurtured academically and spir-itually at single-sex schools. She says, “The young women atNDA are students first – students looking to gain as muchknowledge and experience as they can possibly squeeze intoa day, a week, a month, a year.” Colin believes that one tan-gible difference between the single-gender and co-ed envi-ronments is the formation of intellectual knowledge andindependent thinking. “Our students are motivated to learnmore than a text can offer and they want to experiencethings beyond the classroom,” she says.

All About Style

Single-sex education is certainly not a new concept. All-fe-male high schools once were the only private school optionfor young women. Today, however, it is the commitment tomaintaining learning environments that put girls first andforemost that unites these schools, and their in-depth under-standing of how girls learn and succeed that sets them apart.

Any teacher would agree that their main goal is to motivateand help each student realize his or her potential. Thosewho appreciate the differences between how boys and girlslearn tend to promote single-gender education. A 2005joint study by the University of California-Irvine and theUniversity of New Mexico indicates that men’s brains havemore gray matter – where information is processed – whilewomen’s brains have more white matter – where connec-tions between areas are made.

Researchers say these two distinct brains are designed forequally intelligent behavior, but the difference shed somelight on why male and female brains are differentiated alonggender lines when it comes to learning styles. That is not tosay that girls and boys are predisposed in their potential toachieve; all children are capable of learning in all subjectareas. What is important is how they are taught.

For the past three years, Steven Joyce has taught chemistryto sophomores and juniors at NDA. Teaching in the all-girlsenvironment after 35 years in the Quincy Public Schoolshas provided Joyce with a context for comparison. “Thenumber one difference: there are fewer distractions for thegirls without the boys around,” he says. “Students are lessafraid of making a mistake in front of the class because theyfeel encouraged by their peers to do well.” As a teacher,Joyce sees these as positives for getting the job done and see-ing his students succeed.

Joyce’s teaching approach hasn’t varied much from his daysin Quincy, but he admits he is able to include experimentshe avoided in the co-ed environment. “There really are nodiscipline problems in class, so I’m not afraid to try some ex-periments that would not have worked at a co-ed school,”he says.

An Effective Option

Single-gender education can be an effective tool of empow-erment and self-realization for girls. So confident in the ma-turity and interest of her students, Russillo shares herpodium with them each Friday. During “Women in theKnow,” one student presents an article to the group andthen poses questions in an effort to spark discussion. “Wehave discussed topics ranging from adoption to make-up towomen in Islam. It can be about anything, and the girlskeep it interesting.”

In short, single-gender education is still a vibrant and rele-vant option for young women today. “This setting allowsgirls to really develop into women in a special way,” Russillosays. “You can’t graduate from NDA without having somesense of the woman you want to be.”

A 2009 UCLA study showed

that women who attended single-gender

high schools outperformed their co-educational

peers on standardized tests and they entered

college with greater confidence in mathematics,

public speaking, and computer skills.

In an effort to raise awareness of the benefits of an all-girls’ Catholicschool, NDA and other all-girls’ schools in the Boston Archdioceseteamed together with the Catholic Schools Foundation this past year.Eight schools and the Foundation worked closely with the marketingfirm, Keady Communications, and compiled research and developed acommunications plan that helps eighth graders relate to current stu-dents. The campaign asks, “Who is She?” and answers the questionusing nine themes including, “She’s Prepared,” “She’s Confident,”“She’s Spiritual,” and “She Speaks Up.”

Michael Reardon, the executive director of the Catholic Schools Foun-dations, shares, “Single-gender Catholic secondary education presentsa tremendous opportunity for young women, yet the awareness of thisgreat work is limited. We hope this program will help build awareness, increase enrollment, and foster alumnae support.”

“Ashley… I think this may be an all-girls floor.” Myfather’s words immediately caught my attention and Ifervently began to search the halls of my new dormlooking for a name that might belong to a member ofthe opposite sex.

“Are you serious!” I exclaimed, “I specificallyasked for a co-ed floor!”

Imagine my surprise to learn that after four years ofsingle-sex education, I had been placed on one ofBoston University’s fabled single-sex floors. While myinitial reaction indicated this was not something I pre-ferred, a few days in this not so new environmentseemed bearable, perhaps even preferable.

As I began to make friends it was easy to see that Ihandled certain situations differently than most girls.I spoke up, without qualms, in front of lecture hall-sized groups of people. In smaller discussion classes, Ifelt little insecurity about speaking my mind, and evenengaged in debates with both teaching assistants andclassmates. I was comfortable walking into the dininghall, right out of bed, my hair a mess and without atrace of makeup on my face. Some girls saw mybehavior as bold, strange, and what they wouldconsider a “turn off” to members of the opposite sex.

I, however, saw it simply as the way Ihad spent the past four years of my life.

Did I credit my single-sex high schoolexperience with this level of maturity? Not right away. It took me some timeto determine that the reason I did allof these strange and unusual thingswas simply because they were all I had known. My time at NDA taught me things that I could not seeuntil I “re-assimilated” into this new and amazing worldthat is called co-ed. There was never one profoundmoment in which I realized what NDA had done forme. Rather, I saw traces of it in my everyday life.Whether or not I wanted to believe it, the four years Ispent at NDA were crucial in developing the inde-pendent and intelligent person I am today.

I am on an all-girls floor for my sophomore year as well.Instead of cursing under my breath at the BU housingdepartment, I just laughed. I guess another year won’tbe so bad.

Ashley Simmons graduated from NDA in 2008. She iscurrently a sophomore at Boston University majoring inpublic relations.

First Person

For many eighth graders, considering where to go to

high school is a big decsion.Without encouragement from

a family member or friend whobenefitted from single-gender

education, many girls unfamiliarwith the option may find theidea of all-girls’ school to be

unappealing or a turn off.

Advancing NDA

But when he was home, life centered on family and sports.“Dad was devoted to children,” recalls daughter Jane Find-ley-Miller ’69, the only girl in the clan. “He was very in-volved with Milton Hockey, helped start Babe Ruth[baseball] in Milton, and was also a high school coach.” Shevividly remembers how her father would often buy hockeyskates and other equipment for his players, particularly whenhe coached at Boston’s Cathedral High.

“He believed athletics gave children an opportunity to betterthemselves, but they didn’t have to be a star. Anyone, even thewaterboy, should feel important for just participating.”

Education was another priority in the Findley household, with all six children attending St. Agatha’s School and fourgoing on to Catholic high schools. “Mom and Dad sacrificedfor us,” says Jane. When she started thinking about highschools, her aunt and uncle suggested a school opening a newbuilding in Hingham. Jane became a member of the firstfreshman class at Notre Dame Academy’s Hingham campus.

“My dad loved the whole concept of family and it was thatway at Notre Dame. He knew all my friends and was so proudof me when I graduated with my white dress and red rose.”

“I was an average student,” explains Jane. “Today I’d prob-ably be classified with a learning disability. I had a lisp. ButI loved the arts and music at NDA.” With her parents en-couragement, Jane worked extra hard and “loved every day”of her Notre Dame experience. She found her calling in col-lege where she studied to become a teacher and made thehonor roll.

When Joseph Findley died in 1985, Jane and her brotherswanted to find a proper way to memorialize their father.“There was no question,” says Jane. “We needed to have ascholarship.”

The siblings agreed that the scholarship should honor someof the values their father had instilled in them: the impor-tance of participation in athletics and the significance ofmaking one’s best effort. They also wanted to recognize thesacrifices that parents make to send their children to privateCatholic schools. Their mother Mary decided that theyshould raise enough money to create a self-perpetuatingfund and they began an annual golf tournament to seed theJoseph H. Findley Scholarship Fund.

Jane remembers, “Mom really set the goal. She wanted togive one scholarship to someone who really needed it.Books, uniforms – it can be just so much.”

For the next decade, the Findleys, their family, and friends, would host a golf tournament at Cohasset Golf Club, work-ing to raise enough money to endow the scholarship fund. The family reached out to Archbishop Williams HighSchool, Boston College High School, and Notre DameAcademy, providing scholarships for students at the schoolsfrom which Jane and her brothers graduated.

Being part of the effort was important, even to the next gen-eration of Findleys. “It was a privilege in my family to go tothe golf tournament and work,” says Jane’s daughter, KatieMiller Dawidow ’99. She recalls how she and her cousinslobbied to be at Cohasset Golf Club for the day, selling raf-fle tickets and helping out on contest holes.

President Barbara A. Barry, SNDdeN ’69 – a classmate ofJane Findley-Miller – remembers attending each Findleytournament with the NDA scholarship recipient and her

parents. “The Findleys truly understand the sacrifices thatour families make for their daughters. It’s important to havescholarships like this one available to keep NDA accessiblefor promising young women, regardless of economic cir-cumstance.” She adds, “Funding for financial aid is one ofour most critical needs. It’s at the heart of who we are as aschool sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.”

While the days of the Findley Golf Tournament are over, the Findley Scholarship continues to be an important pieceof the offerings to families in need at NDA.

Last year’s recipient may have put it best, “It means a lot tome that I can continue my education at Notre Dame… thisschool has become a large part of my life and will help megreatly in the future.”

“My father always went that extra step to make someonefeel part of a team,” says Jane. As she tells the story, Josephwould always find a special role for even those who struggledto keep up athletically.

Today, the Findley Scholarship helps keep one more girl “inthe game” at NDA, a tradition that makes the Academy aricher place for all our students.

“ The Findleys truly understandthe sacrifices that our families make for their

daughters. It’s important to have scholarships

like this one available to keep NDA accessible

for promising young women, regardless of

economic circumstance.”

The concept of community that her father loved was never more

evident than in 1997, when Jane’s husband Steven Miller died,

just 18 months after he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a

cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. He left six children,

including four already enrolled in Catholic high schools. Their

oldest daughter Katie was then in her sophomore year at NDA.

When Steven became ill, it hit the family hard, both emotion-

ally and financially. There would be no extra money for tuition.

Katie would not be able to return to NDA for her junior and

senior years.

“I was freaking out,” recalls Katie Miller Dawidow ’99. “I loved

NDA, absolutely loved it.” She was a member of the soccer

team and class treasurer. She had just taken out her papers to

run for class officer for her junior year when her mother gave

her the news.

Unbeknownst to her parents, Katie decided to take matters into

her own hands, writing a letter to the NDA Alumnae Associa-

tion, asking for their assistance. Weeks later, she was called out

of chemistry class and told to report to Sister Barbara’s office.

Sister Barbara, then Academy principal, had Katie’s mother on

the phone.

“Sister Barbara told me to go take out my student government

papers,” says Katie. NDA, with the support of the NDA Alumnae

Association and an anonymous alumna benefactor, had found

the financial aid sufficient to make Katie’s last two years at the

Academy possible. “I was so elated.”

Today, Katie is a paramedic for Fallon Ambulance. She and

her husband Peter – a Xaverian graduate and her high school

sweetheart – are awaiting the birth of their first child this

spring. If it’s a girl, it’s a safe bet that NDA will see her at

Open House in 2023.

Dear Friend,

The 2008–2009 President’s Report on Giving

As alumnae, we have always known that Notre Dame Academy is blessed with a vibrant and dedicated community. Ourdays in the classroom were filled with enthusiastic students and passionate teaching professionals. Now, in our roles as Academy President and Chair of the Board of Directors we have seen first-hand how NDA thrives because of the partici-pation of alumnae, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends.

This community spirit was especially true in the last year. As the financial markets crumbled and families’ incomes de-creased, NDA , like many institutions, evaluated spending and prepared to make tough decisions in light of a negative phil-anthropic forecast. Yet, as the year progressed, the strength of the NDA community shined through in unexpected moments:

• A young alumna who lost her job, won $1,000 at the Out of the Blue Gala. That very evening, she made a gift of $500to support financial aid and scholarships.

• At Christmas, a grandmother was curious how she could impact her granddaughter’s classroom experience and called the Advancement Office. The next week a check arrived to cover the additional 13 Smart Boards needed to equip everyclassroom with this teaching tool.

• The inaugural Out of the Blue Gala, a dinner and auction to benefit financial aid, was sold out (over 400 people attended!) and more than $120,000 was raised.

• Knowing the impact the economy was having on their schoolmates, the Class of 2009 gave $8,217 as their class gift toestablish a scholarship for a member of the Class of 2012.

In a year where non-profit organizations everywhere were cutting programs and staff, we are proud to report a small increaseover our previous year’s fundraising results. This would not have been possible without the generosity and commitment of individuals and families who sacrificed and gave more than they thought they could to help ensure that the student experience at NDA was unaffected.

To recognize NDA’s donors, the President’s Report on Giving lists all individuals and organizations who made a gift during the past fiscal year. We are grateful to each person on this list – and to our volunteers – who continue to support anall-girls’ Catholic education. Thank you for all that you do for Notre Dame and our young women.

With gratitude,

Sister Barbara A. Barry, SNDdeN ’69President

Every effort has been made to accurately reflect all gifts to NDA between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. Please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement with any errors or omissions.

NDA Receives a Gift of a LifetimeThe gifts would arrive each June, just as school was getting out. Except for the last one – a stu-dent caller reached out during the annual phonathon, so Gertrude Drey ’43G sent her annualfund contribution early. Miss Drey was a loyal member of the Fideles Society, and a graduatewho never forgot her alma mater.

That was poignantly evident after her death in December 2008, when NDA learned that MissDrey had included the Academy in her will. Never one to accept the school’s invitations to visit, she was known for her quiet and unassuming way. But the magnitude of her gift, expected toexceed $550,000, was anything but quiet.

“Miss Drey’s gift will be among the largest ever received by Notre Dame Academy,” notes Sis-ter Barbara A. Barry, SNDdeN ’69, NDA president. “Given without restrictions, her gift willmake an impact at a time when flexible funding is so critical to any institution’s financialhealth.”

Gertrude Drey graduated from NDA’s Granby Street campus in 1943, a time when educatedwomen generally became teachers or nurses, with the expectation that the roles of wife andmother would eventually supersede the career.

But after earning her bachelor’s degree from Emmanuel College, Miss Drey went on to earnher master’s degree from Boston College and a second master’s from Northeastern University. She enjoyed a long a storied teaching career, inspiring generations of Latin and English students at Boston’s Girls Latin School and Hull High School.

Longtime friend and advisor Michael Puzo P’96 ’98 ’04 shared, “Miss Drey was deeply com-mitted to education and to setting and meeting standards, both for herself and her students.”Her example was followed by many students, and Michael recalls how one student – now inhis sixties – attended Miss Drey’s wake, despite not seeing her since high school. “He came tospeak of the impact she had had on him and that her example had drawn him to a life ofteaching, for which he was deeply grateful.”

NDA is deeply grateful for the impact that Miss Drey’s gift will have on our campus and onthe generations of students who follow in her footsteps.

The McAndrew Society honors those who have made Notre DameAcademy part of their legacy through a planned gift. Members ofthis group have included a bequest provision in a will or trust orprovided for NDA through a retirement plan or insurance policy. For more information about how a planned gift can benefit youand NDA, please contact Lynn Page Flaherty, Director of Institu-

tional Advancement, at 781.749.5930, ext. 246.

The 2008–2009 President’s Report on Giving

†deceased

New Scholarships at NDABoth annual gifts and income from endowed funds go intoproviding scholarships and financial aid at NDA. The followingnew gifts and funds were given in the previous fiscal year tohelp support these efforts:

Catholic Schools Foundation Challenge Grant

New and increased gifts to financial aid, given by alumnae andthe Board of Directors, enabled NDA to qualify for a $15,000challenge grant from the Catholic Schools Foundation.

Class of 2009 Scholarship

Each graduating class leaves its mark at NDA with a gift, usu-ally in support of a physical item for the campus. The Class of2009 elected to create a scholarship fund that will support onemember of the Class of 2012 – their freshman “little sisters” –through the next three years of her NDA education. The grantwill be awarded in December 2009.

Laura Guidoboni ’10 Scholarship Fund

Laura’s family teamed up with NDA’s annual golf tournament tohelp raise funds to start this memorial scholarship. Additionalgifts from friends and family have added to the principal bal-ance. The first scholarship will be awarded in December 2009.

Elizabeth Shields ’01 Scholarship Fund

After her death in December 2008, Liz Shields’ family askedthat gifts to NDA be made in her honor. With these moniesand the proceeds of an event organized by Liz’s sister in Octo-ber 2009, the family is working towards their goal of endowinga scholarship to be awarded annually in Liz’s memory.

The 2008–2009 President’s Report on Giving

†deceased

What better way to support a decision your child has madethan to dive in with both feet and contribute in any fashionthat you can? NDA, more than any other institution, instills independent thinking and confidence in young women, a traitthat will serve them well throughout their lives and careers.

MissionNotre Dame Academy is a vibrant, Catholic, college-preparatory learning community, sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. TheAcademy guides young women in their personal faith formation, challenges students to pursue academic excellence, and encourages social responsibility on behalf of global justice.

In support of this mission, vita! magazine communicates through its pages the newsworthy activities of members of the NDA community. vita!is published three times a year for alumnae, parents, faculty, staff, and friends of the Academy. The word “vita” comes from the school motto:Dux, Lux, Via, Veritas, Vita – Christ is our Leader, Light, Way, Truth, and Life.

If you’ve taken a peek through this magazine, you’ve probably noticed that things look, well... a little different. With thisissue we launch the newly redesigned vita! magazine.

When I returned to NDA a little over a year ago, I was curious what it would be like to drive up the driveway every dayand walk down the tiled hallways, not as a student but as a member of the staff. I quickly noted the energy in the classrooms, the spirit of the students, and the activity on campus. I wondered: how can I share this energy with the readers of vita!? It is my hope that the publication’s new design captures the feeling you get when you arrive at 1073 Main Street – the veryname of the magazine – life!

With this redesign, we continue to promote pride in the Academy; engage readers in campus life; connect alumnae with eachother and NDA; and position the Academy as the leading college-preparatory all-girls’ Catholic high school in the region.

Special thanks to our designer Amanda Quintin of Amanda Quintin Design, who elegantly captures both the spirit and sophistication of NDA. President Barbara Barry, SNDdeN ’69 and Institutional Advancement Director Lynn Page Flaherty supported this design process and took part in many of the decisions. I thank them both for their encouragement.

What do you think of vita!’s new look? I encourage your feedback and comments. Please contact me [email protected].

Sincerely,

Katie Quinn Miller ’97 Director of Communications
