Working of Hydroelectric Power Plant
A dam is constructed across a waterbody.
• Water from the catchment area collectsat the back of the dam to form reservoir.
• Water is brought to valve house at thestart of penstock.
• The valve house contains main sluicevalves and automatic isolating valves.

Dams are structures built over rivers tostop the water flow and form a reservoir.A dam performs following two basicfunctions:-
It develops a reservoir of the desiredcapacity to store water and;
It builds up a head for power generation.

Headwork
The headwork consists of the diversionstructures at the head of an intake.
They generally include booms and racksfor diverting floating debris, sluices for bypassing debris and sediments and valvesfor controlling the flow of water to theturbine.

Surge Tanks
Surge tanks are tanks connected to thewater conductor system.
It serves the purpose of reducing waterhammering in pipes which can causedamage to pipes.

Penstocks
Penstocks are pipes which carry waterfrom the reservoir to the turbines insidepower station.
They are usually made of steel and areequipped with gate systems.
Concrete penstocks are suitable for lowhead (<30m).
Water under high pressure flows throughthe penstock.

Power Station Power station contains a turbine coupled to
a generator. The water brought to the power station
rotates the vanes of the turbineproducing torque and rotation of turbineshaft.
This rotational torque is transferred to thegenerator and is converted into electricity.
The used water is released through the tailrace.

Water Turbines

Impulse Turbines
Impulse turbines are one that worksunder atmospheric pressure. Suchturbines are used for high heads.
In this turbine the entire pressure ofwater is converted into kinetic energy ina nozzle and the velocity of the jet drivesthe wheel.

Advantages of Hydroelectric Power Plants
No fuel is required here as water is usedfor the generation of electrical energy.
It is quit safe as no smoke or ash isproduced.
It requires very small running chargesthan other power plant because water isthe source of energy which is availablefree of cost.
It is comparatively simple in constructionand requires less maintenance.

It does not takes more starting time likein steam power station. In fact such plantput into service instantly.
It is robust and has a longer life. The hydropower plant serves many
purposes. like generation of electricalenergy, they also helps in irrigation andcontrolling flood.
Being simple in design and operation. Manpower requirement is also low. More reliable than others.

Disadvantages of Hydroelectric Power Plant It requires high capital because the
construction of dam is required. There is uncertainty about the availability
of huge amount of water because it isdependent on whether condition.
Skilled and experienced hands arerequired to build the plant.
Since far from the load centre and requirelong transmission lines is required.

Conclusion
