LAYOUT TALKScheduling the Unscheduled

Corruption, insincerity, moral d e g r a d a t i o n , n o n governance,……..power cuts, etc. are all easily overlooked nowadays. How come power cut is included in the above list? Two neighbors were discussing walking on the road. The first lady said, “Our UPS is running down and it cannot support more fans at home.” The lady next door replied, “My husband bought a biii…i…g UPS.” with her hands going so wide that a man walking on the road had to say 'excuse me' to find a gap on the road to walk.

Many people need not worry today as backup batteries take care of electricity. Hats off to the inventor of inverter and batteries today, our children are able to study during exams. Power cut has become a good tool in the hands of opposition parties to stage a protest. The protests are sometimes meaningful. Recently, the city Congress leaders in Mysore staged a protest against Chamundeswari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) by performing a ritual in front of the office. This is to condemn the unscheduled power cuts. The leader of the team warned if power supply is not improved they would lay siege to the CESC office.

Coming to Bangalore, the power cut is from 10am to 11am in one area, 12 noon to 1 in another, etc. Again, God knows why, the power supply goes off suddenly at 3 pm and comes back at 3:50pm. There is no standard timings for power cuts. Not everyone has UPS at home. The power cut is anywhere between 2-8 hours every day in some areas. How will India compete with China and other countries in growth with these major infrastructural deficiencies?

By Dr. Sadiq Ahmed MBBS, PGDHs, MHs –Diabetology,

General Physician / Diabetologist

-----------As life has become more mechanical now, we tend to forget the basic things required to keep the body healthy viz: Exercise, Adequate sleep, Balanced Diet, Stress free life. Our genes have not changed over the past 100,000 years, but we have changed a lot. In olden days, lot of physical work was involved and calories were burnt. But now a days, our work does not involve physical work most of the times. Hence diseases like diabetes, hypertension, dyslipedemia'signif icant, cardiovascular diseases are rampant due to lifestyle mismanagement. Factors influencing our lifestyle are Diet, Physical activities, leisure times, Habits, Attitude, Mental stress, Spirituality, etc Lifestyle determinants such as education, profession, health, wealth, travel, social factors and family, income make life easy. We travel by cars, eat food rich in fat & carbohydrate, smoking, drinking, consumption of junk food most of the times. Gains of such lifestyle transitions compared to our ancestors are better living conditions/more variety of foods/better communication/eradication of communicable diseases (with exceptions) while the Loses are less physical activity, more eating, more stress leading to Obesity, and the above mentioned diseases In today's hectic world with the demands of job, spouse, children, friends and other obligations, only little time is left for exercise and other leisure pursuits. Hence, need of the hour - behavioural therapy! Easy to start . . . Difficult to maintain . . .Best when sustained . .

strategic planning, creativity, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, which will be used throughout life. Chess can be used very effectively as a tool to teach problem solving and abstract reasoning. Learning how to solve a problem is more important than learning the solution to any particular problem. Through chess, we learn how to analyze a situation by focusing on important factors and by eliminating distractions. We learn to devise creative solutions and put a plan into action. Chess works because it is self-motivating.

Tailor Bird Children's Library & Activity Centre conducted Open Chess Tournament for children (both boys and girls) in all age groups on Sunday, Jan 31, 2010 at Vagdevi Vilas School, Marathahalli branch premises. Chess club of Tailor Bird is affiliated to United Karnataka Chess Association.

Myth: Reading in dim light can damage your eyes.

Fact: Reading in dim light can cause eye fatigue, but it will not hurt your eyes.

MIND WORKS-23Stop Wanting, Start HavingBy UK Athikkal-----------

Achyuth tells his friend Ashok that whatever the type of desires he creates often gets fulfilled in his life. But Ashok finds this statement interesting as well as intriguing. Because in his experience, he finds that none of his expectations usually get materialized. Things remain as merely unfulfilled desires and mere wishes in his case.

What could be the reason for this different and opposite kind of experiences. For one, all his dreams, desires and expectations turn into realities. For the other, they merely remain as dreams. Maybe, most of the desires Achyuth generates are more realistic and achievable whereas those of Ashok are far beyond his level of accomplishment. Maybe, Achyuth takes his wishes more seriously and works for their accomplishment in a motivated and persistent manner. But these are not the exact causes for their differing experiences in getting their desires fulfilled.

We need to remind ourselves that everything in this universe is made up of energy. The only difference between an atom of a human body and another atom of a wooden furniture is, each has energy vibrating at different frequencies. It is clear that the reason why the same particles grow together is because they are vibrating at the same frequency.

Since everything is made up of energy, then what is thought? Thought is also energy vibrating at a particular frequency. This has been proven in laboratories. With proper instruments, scientists can measure the frequency of thought or brain waves.

Now, we should understand that things do not just happen accidently. Everything that happens in our life, happens for a reason. The reason is within us. It is our thought that has created everything that we have now. There is no coincidence, there are no miracles. Everything we have is attracted by our own thoughts. We are the creators.

Our thoughts are vibrating energy. We can create anything we want by focusing our thoughts on the very thing we want.

How to apply this law of attraction? The simplest way to apply is to hold a

mental picture of what you desire. Feel that you already have what you want with certainty. You will then see it quickly in your life. The object of your desire has a particular frequency for its particles. The frequency of your thoughts then aligns with the object of your desire and that helps the manifestation.

Now let us review the experience of Achyuth and Ashok with the above perspective. It is possible that Achyuth's desires were more focussed and certain. He had positive belief in himself and felt the feelings as if he has already succeeded in his efforts. In the case of Ashok, he probably has the habit of wishing for t h i n g s a n d n o t b e l i e v i n g t h e materialization of those wishes.

Hence let us stop merely wanting things Let us have, in lieu, intense desires and feel that we already possess those materials. This process if we practice can bring about very positive and successful outcomes in the life of each one of us.

----------Sometimes it is interesting to listen to the conversations between grandpa and grandson. Once they were discussing about modern communication. It was World Communication Day. “We are in the era of communication. We can achieve more things than what people have done in those days grandpa.” said Ramana.

R a m a j i w a s n o t s o comfortable with this and nodded his head in disagreement “Gandhiji traveled a lot to gather momentum against the British rule. It is all about determination and will irrespective of what is given to human beings.”

“Do you think, someone in his place with a cell phone could have made things easier and effortless?” grandpa was little bit sarcastic in his expression.

“Well I agree with you grandpa. However, we are living in

a antithetical world and no concrete derivation by judging one thing through the other. With an advanced cell phone in his hand, hasn't Ajmal Kasab moved ahead with determination to kill many Mumbaikars?” said Ramana.

“Hmm. Hey Ram!” said Grandpa with a worried face.

“Sometimes it makes me feel that we are very closer to Lord Shiva because our leaders are seen standing closer to God on the wall posters. May be the communication gap is reduced between Man and God.”

The serious face of grandpa changed as he laughed and replied “Again we cannot disagree or agree. Sometimes if good things happen like if Lord Shiva decides to turn Ganges in the drought prone districts of our state, we would certainly be happy.”

S i g n i f i c a n c e o f A s h WednesdayAsh Wednesday is a holy day for most Christians. It is the day when they visit the church for a holy cross mark on their forehead from the father of the church with the ashes of the leaves of the palm tree. It is meant to signify that after human beings die, we too turn to ashes. It was celebrated on 17th February this year.
