LAYOUT TALKSpread Your Wings and Brace up for a New Dawn

India has come a long way from being a newly independent nation to one of the fastest growing economies of the world. Hardships were plenty but our spirits came out stronger as difficulties were tackled and obstacles cleared. Urbanisation and globalisation may have led to degeneration to some levels but days like these help us relive and celebrated our much valued freedom.

India's 60th Republic Day will see Kazakhstan President Nursultan N a z a r b a y e v p a r t i c i p a t e i n celebrations at the India Gate in New Delhi. This is the first time a leader from the Central Asian region will be the Chief Guest of Republic Day celebrations. Another highlight of this year's Republic Day celebrations will be the 18 tableaux that will roll down Rajpath. This will showcase one of India's greatest quality of unity in diversity. From the folk culture of Mithila to the Gair dance of Rajasthan and the natural splendor of Kaziranga and Ranthambore National Parks, various features from different states will come together to depict the country's rich culture and diversity.

India: Housing finance major HDFC is entering the education loan business, which the company sees as a high growth segment. HDFC bought 41% Stake in Nov 2009 announced acquisition from DSP Merrill Lynch Capital of a 41 per cent equity stake in a finance service company Credila Financial Services that specialises in education loans. Though the acquisition is modest in terms of value terms, the move assumes significance as the housing finance company is entering into a new line of business. Mumbai-based Credila Financial specialises in student loans, especially for students going abroad. The NBFC (non-banking financial company) has a loan portfolio of around Rs 20 crore, built over the last two years.

The student loan segment is growing at an annualised rate of about 25-30 per cent , which makes this investment an attractive one for HDFC. From now on HDFC will focus on growing the business of Credila Financial and even infuse fresh capital if required according to reliable sources. The remaining 59 per cent stake is held by the promoters Bohora Brothers. Banks

active in the education loans have seen good credit growth as this segment has not been hit much by the downturn. In the September ended quarter, most banks reported over 25 per cent growth in student loan protfolio.

Education loans are not linked to the immediate income of the borrower but are linked to the future earnings. Therefore, the immediate economic scenario has no impact on this segment. Bank of Baroda saw its education loan portfolio grow by 29 per cent in the September ended quarter. For Bank of India the growth was 24 per cent and for Union Bank of India the growth was 40 per cent.

MIND WORKS-18Self AwarenessBy Prof UK Athikkal---------

In our daily life, we face many situations where we respond or react in an inappropriate manner and regret later on. At home, a simple argument with your spouse got escalated in to an ugly altercation and accusation. At the workplace, while dealing with an irate customer you lost your cool r e s u l t i n g i n u n f o r t u n a t e consequences. Overcoming these problems could be attempted by taking steps for developing our self-awareness.

What, then, is self-awareness? Being aware of our feelings and behavior as well as others perceptions of you can influence your action in a beneficial manner. In the case of dealing with an irate customer, let us assume that you are aware that your client is driving you crazy. You also know that alienating the client could have unfortunate consequences. Your course of action might then be to mollify him rather than to further anger him with your short temper.

The key here is accessing the wealth of information – your feelings, senses, appraisals, actions and intentions - available to you about yourself. This information helps you understand how you respond, behave, communicate and operate in different situations. Processing this information is what we call self-awareness. High self- awareness is the building block of emotional intel l igence. By managing our emotions and motivating ourselves we can

enhance our emotional intelligence. For that we need to develop our c o m m u n i c a t i o n s k i l l s a n d interpersonal expertise. Self-awareness is the core of these skills. High self-awareness enables you to monitor yourself and to observe yourself in action. This ability to monitor yourself in a continuous basis guides your behavior from situation to situation. It provides you solid frame work for making better choices.

We need a gyroscope to effectively navigate through our work world. That can help us to know what course we are to follow and how to stay on it. We can compare our self awareness with this gyroscope. It helps keep us centered and alerts us when we are tilting off course. What do you need to increase your self awareness? Some serious thoughtfulness and the courage to explore how you react to people and events in your work life. It is not the external events, but how we evaluate and give meaning to those events, that matter. That in turn affects our senses – seeing, hearing, smelling and touching as our senses are filtered and transformed by such appra isa ls and percept ions . Developing high self-awareness requires practice and courage, but the efforts in this direction will be highly rewarding in enhancing our personal effectiveness.

Do we really care for our country? Isn't it convenient for the citizens to criticize 'corruption' in our economic system? But, do we really have the courage to follow our conscience, to fight against this system, to go out and vote for the right candidate, to follow Mahatma Gandhi's path of truth

and justice? If power, money and status dominate our lives, then it affects each one of us and will prove to be detrimental to our c o u n t r y . T h i s o n e h o u r documentary on the internet proposes few recommendations to rectify the loopholes in our system.

Pine Island Glacier Melts FasterAccording to scientists, a major Antarctic glacier, Pine Island glacier (PIG) has passed its "tipping point" and is ready to collapse. This could raise global sea levels by 24cm. I n 2 0 0 4 , s a t e l l i t e observations showed that PIG, one of the many glaciers at the fringes of the West Antarctic ice sheet, had started to thin and that ice was flowing into the Amundsen Sea 25 per cent faster than it had 30 years before. Now, the new study found that PIG has probably passed a critical "tipping point" and is irreversibly on track to lose 50 per cent of its ice in as little as 100 years, significantly raising global sea levels. The model suggests that within 100 years, PIG's grounding line could have retreated over 200 kilometres.

"Mostly, though, I blame the top levels of corporate culture which, by the middle of this decade, were completely in a bubble of mandatory optimism and positive thinking," she added. Ehrenreich referred to the "cult-like atmosphere of high-fives" at Countrywide, the mortgage lender that became one of the biggest casualties of the subprime crisis, and claimed that executives who sounded warnings of impending financial disaster at Lehman Brothers were dismissed as "negative" thinkers. "Corporate America had gone into this bubble of denial where bad things could never happen," she added.

Don't Be Befooled by Thinking Positive AlwaysUnited Kingdom : Barbara Ehrenreich in her new book titled Smile Or Die: How Positive Thinking Fooled America and the World, challenged the notion of positive attitude saying the modern tyranny of positive thinking is to blame for society's ills and was the true cause of the financial crisis. "Delusion is always dangerous and the big example I would give of that is the 2008 financial meltdown. "Many, many people got way over their heads in debt - ordinary people. And in what frame of mind do you assume large amounts of debt? Well, a positive frame of mind.

Health Aptly DefinedThe World Health Organization defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Eating right, exercising and sleeping well play an equal role in the prevention of infections and diseases. However, a good sense of self, a loving support network, and the potential for continued personal growth is also important to our overall wellbeing. Many of us are not in control of the factors that cause us to become ill w h e t h e r t h e y b e g e n e t i c , environmental, or something else entirely. There are many avenues we can take to improving our health, which include the use of traditional and modern medicines when we are ill. However, most people cannot access or afford proper health care such as healthy sanitation and hygiene, which is necessary to prevent the spread of disease.

ReligionIndependenceOwing to repeated birth and death in so many material bodies, we have all forgotten that we are part and parcel of God, that we have an intimate relationship with Him, and that somehow or other we have fallen into this material worlds. It is very difficult to exactly pinpoint the origin of this forgetfulness. But even though we have forgotten Him since time immemorial, God is so merciful that to remind us of our spiritual identity and our oneness with Him as His parts. But if the conditioned souls insist on staying here, what can God or His servant do? They allow us to go on with our materialistic activities, because the first condition for getting out of the material prison house is that we must desire to get out. But there are many who will not desire to get out because they do not agree to come under the control of God's spiritual energy. But God does not interfere. He says, “You may remain in the material world or come to Me – whatever you like.” We have been given minute independence and the intelligence to discriminate between what to do and what not to do.
