Beam smiled and responded, “they did good and they also got first place.” The one thing they did real well at the Sun- fair Parade was that they got first place while only practicing marching 3 times. We also asked her what they need to do differently next time and she said “to be able to breath clean air ’’ The Band was placed in the Junior High School Division, and still received first place honors. La Banda LC Brilla en el Desfile Sunfair

La Sra. Beam ha enseñando durante
16 años. El instrumento que tocó en
la preparatoria fue el trombón. Sin
embargo, en la universidad ella tu-
vo que aprender a tocar todos los
instrumentos.
Le preguntamos que cómo se había
desempeñado la Banda en el desfile
Sunfair y la Sra. Beam sonrió y res-
pondió, “hicieron buen trabajo y
ganaron el 1er lugar”. Lo que real-
mente hicieron
bien en el des-
file Sunfair fue
que obtuvie-
ron el 1er lugar
aunque sólo
habían practi-
cado la mar-
cha 3 veces.
También le
preguntamos
que es lo que
necesitan ha-
cer diferente
la próxima vez y dijo, “poder respi-
rar aire limpio’’.
La Banda participó en la División
Junior High School, y aún así recibió
primer lugar con honores.
¿Le gusta enseñar?
Respuesta: “Disfruto trabajar
con los estudiantes”.
¿Durante cuánto tiempo ha
enseñado?
Respuesta: “Este es mi 32º
año y en la escuela Lewis and

Page 3 Getting to Know our Assistant Principals... Mrs. Norman
Mrs. Norman’s goal for the
school year is to continue
learning about Lewis and
Clark and to develop her
Spanish skills. There are
plans to bring back the
talent show and there are
some other ideas still
“brewing.” “I’m excited
for the new school year
and ready for this year.”
Mrs. Norman likes work-
ing with both children and
adults and credits her fam-
ily for the motivation to
become an Assistant Prin-
cipal. Mrs. Norman enjoys
being a vice principal .
Eventually she will take
the next step and become
a principal, but until then
she’ll just continue work-
ing towards it.
Mrs. Norman is an advo-
cate for extracurricular
activities. “If I could I
would coach Cross Coun-
try, Softball, Basketball,
and I am open to other
sports as well,” stated
Norman. “Life’s too short
to not do anything, live
outside the box, and try to
conquer fears.”
Mrs. Norman’s home town
is Toledo, Washington.
She had played the flute
and the baritone. In high
school, she was a cheer
leader. At the age of six-
teen she had gotten her
first job working at a res-
taurant named Spiffy’s.
She attended college at
Lower Columbia College,
WSU, and Heritage Uni-
versity. Norman attended
college for seven years.
After college, she had
worked for United Airlines
and was a travel agent.
She planned to become a
pilot but couldn’t because
of her bad back. On the
day of 9/11 terrorist attack
she had called her mom
and told her she didn’t
know what to do. Her sis-
ter took her to lunch and
told Norman that she is
going back to college to
get her teaching degree.
Mrs. Norman worked at
Adams Elementary for 5
years, and at Sunnyside
for 5 years. Mrs. Norman
has three kids named Kay-
cee, Alexis, and Ashton
and has been married for
nine years now.
Mr. Rust
Mr. Rust is one of the Vice
Principals here. This is
his second year here at
Lewis and Clark. The rea-
son he decided to be-
come a Vice Principal is
because he liked helping
the students in his class-
room and he wanted to
help the entire student
body of the school. “I
also like working with
middle school kids,” stat-
ed Rust. Rust was actually
a math teacher before his
job now. Rust loved
teaching at Washington
Middle School and
thought that it would be a
good fit for himself here
so he decided to apply for
the open position here at
LC.
Instead of a math teacher
“I actually wanted to be a
news broadcaster” stated
Rust. Mr. Rust studied at
WSU and earned a BA de-
gree, which is why he al-
ways says "Go Cougs!"
He is originally from
White Salmon, Washing-
ton.
His goals for the school
year are "to do his best at
his job and to continue to
get better." The new
event that he is planning
is to create a parent in-
volvement committee, a
PIC. This committee is to
better inform parents of
school activities and cre-
ate better parent involve-
ment.
What he sees best in kids
is that even though we go
through some hard chal-
lenges we still manage to
be successful. After ask-
ing about our Dress for
Success, Mr. Rust is in dis-
cussions with Mrs. Nor-
man and Mr. Nourani
about having spirit week
and possibly free dress
days as rewards for stu-
dent achievements.
He encourages the stu-
dents to live by the On-
TRACK rules and to al-
ways do their best.
Sports Round Up
FOOTBALL - This is the most athletic team we have had, however injuries and some other issues have limited our success.
CROSS COUNTRY - Despite having a rough start to the season due to limitations because of wildfires our
runners have done an outstanding job! Everyday our runners work tremendously hard.
FASTPITCH - Our team was very small, but the girls tried their hardest and learned a LOT!!
SOCCER – We have a very good team and have had limited chances to show how talented we really are.

La meta de la Sra. Norman
para el año escolar es conti-
nuar aprendiendo sobre la
escuela Lewis y Clark y
desarrollar sus habilidades
en español. Hay planes para
volver a traer el show de
talento y hay algunas otras
ideas que aún "están en
progreso". “Estoy emocio-
nada por el nuevo año esco-
lar y lista para este año". A
la Sra. Norman le gusta tra-
bajar con niños y adultos y
da a su familia el crédito de
motivarla a que se convir-
tiera en Subdirectora. A la
Sra. Norman le gusta ser
subdirectora. Eventualmen-
te, tomará el siguiente paso
y se convertirá en directora,
pero por ahora sólo conti-
nuará trabajando para lo-
grarlo. La Sra. Norman apo-
ya las actividades extracu-
rriculares. "Si pudiera, sería
entrenador de Cross Coun-
try, Softbol, Baloncesto, y
también estoy abierta a
otros deportes", afirmó la
Sra. Norman. "La vida es
demasiado corta para no
hacer nada, hay que vivir
fuera de la caja y tratar de
vencer los temores".
La Sra. Norman nació en
Toledo, Washington. Ella
tocó la flauta y el barítono.
En la escuela preparatoria,
fue porrista. A la edad de 16
años consiguió su primer
trabajo en un restaurante
llamado Spiffy's. Asistió a la
universidad en Lower
Columbia College, WSU y
Heritage University. La Sra.
Norman asistió a la universi-
dad durante siete años.
Después de la universidad,
trabajó para United Airlines
y era agente de viajes. Ella

del 11 de septiembre, llamó
a su madre y le dijo que no
sabía qué hacer. Su herma-
na la llevó a almorzar y le

título de maestra. La Sra.
Norman trabajó en la Escue-
la Primaria Adams durante 5
años y en Sunnyside por 5
años. La Sra. Norman tiene 3
hijos llamados Kaycee, Ale-
xis y Ashton y lleva nueve
años casada.
Sr. Rust
El Sr. Rust es uno de los
subdirectores aquí. Este es
su segundo año aquí en la
escuela Lewis y Clark. La
razón por la que decidió
convertirse en subdirector
es porque le gustaba ayu-
dar a los estudiantes en su
clase y quería ayudar a
todo el cuerpo estudiantil
de la escuela. “También
me gusta trabajar con niños
de escuela media ", dijo el

quería ser un conductor de

estudió en WSU y obtuvo
un título BA, esta es la ra-
zón por la que siempre di-
ce "¡Go Cougs!" Él es origi-

Sus objetivos para el año
escolar son "hacer lo mejor
en su trabajo y continuar
mejorando". El nuevo
evento que está planeando
es crear un comité de parti-
cipación de padres, un PIC.
Este comité debe informar

ción de los padres.
Lo que él ve mejor en los
niños es que a pesar de
que pasamos por algunos
retos difíciles, logramos
tener éxito. Después de
preguntar sobre nuestro
reglamento ‘Vestidos para
el Éxito’, el Sr. Rust está en
pláticas con la Sra. Norman
y el Sr. Nourani acerca de
tener una semana de orgu-
llo escolar y posiblemente
días de vestuario libre co-
mo recompensa por los
logros de los estudiantes.
Él anima a los estudiantes a
vivir de acuerdo a las re-
glas OnTRACK y siempre
hacer lo mejor.
Deportes
FOOTBALL - Este es el equipo más deportivo que hemos tenido; sin embargo, las lesiones y otros problemas han limitado nuestro éxito.
CROSS COUNTRY - A pesar de tener un comienzo difícil en la temporada debido a las limitaciones por los in-
cendios forestales ¡nuestros corredores han hecho un trabajo excelente! Cada día nuestros corredores ha-
cen un excelente trabajo.
FASTPITCH - Nuestro equipo era muy pequeño, pero las muchachas hicieron todo lo posible y ¡aprendieron MUCHO!
SOCCER – Tenemos un excelente equipo pero tuvimos oportunidades limitadas para mostrar lo talentoso que es.
What is your favorite book?
Mrs. Batali said that “there are too many to pick just one. I just
finished reading Goldfish Boy by Lisa Thompson.”
What do you like about that book?
Mrs. Batali stated that “the main character, Mathew, suffers from
obsessive compulsive disorder and getting to see how he
evolves in the book.”
What are your 3 favorite parts about your book?
Mrs. Batali responded that “the characters, the mystery that
needs to be solved, and the ending.”
What genre is the book?
Mrs. Batali stated that “the genre is realistic fiction.”
What made you like this book? –was it the writing, genre, the au-
thor, etc.
Mrs. Batali said that “The characters seem like real people. The
author did a great job writing this book.”

STUDENT BOOK REVIEW
Are you tired of reading boring books or finding books
you’re not even interested in? Well you’re in luck be-
cause now we’re introducing a book that might just be
right for you. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck” is a
great read and is recommended this month. It has humor
and a lot of pictures. Who doesn’t like that? The reason
we chose this book is because the title itself resembles
what we have at school “hard luck”. Plus you never
know if your day at school will be good or bad. Well
that’s our recommended book of the month.

RESEÑA DE LIBRO
¿Están cansados de leer libros aburridos o de encontrar li-
bros en los que no están interesados? Pues están de suerte
porque ahora estamos presentado un libro que quizás sea el
perfecto para ustedes. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck”
es una buena lectura y es la recomendación de este mes.
Tiene buen humor y muchos dibujos. ¿A quien no le gusta
eso? La razón por la que escogimos este libro es porque por
sí solo el título se parece a lo que tenemos en la escuela
“mala suerte”. Además, nunca saben si su día en la escuela
será bueno o malo. Bueno, es el libro que les recomenda-
mos este mes.
¿Cuál es tu libro favorito?
La Sra. Batali dijo que “hay muchos sólo para escoger uno.
Acabo de terminar de leer Goldfish Boy de Lisa Thompson”.
