LCCHS FOUNDATION A YEAR IN REVIEW LCCHS Foundation A Year in Review July 1, 2014 LCC SENIOR AND THEATER STUDENT AUBREE BOUCHEE WINS BEN VEREEN AWARD! IN THIS ISSUE As I reflect on the 2013-2014 school year I am continuously awestruck by all of the accomplishments at La Costa Canyon High School. We’ve won awards for academic achievements, sent 95% of our students on to college, won prestigious awards in the Arts and numerous CIF titles in Athletics. All of these accomplishments are empowered by the generous donations from the LCC Community. Although our students are extremely talented and high achievers they couldn’t have done it without your support. We are so fortunate to have an amazing group of parents and businesses who sincerely care about our kids and our school and the LCC Foundation can’t thank you enough. Walking through campus one quickly realizes that our students are much more than their accomplishments. They are good and caring citizens with a bright future ahead of them. They are quick to come to the aid of a friend in need and they are always willing to volunteer. This is a direct reflection on our parent community and something you should all be very proud of. Besides all of our school accomplishments this has also been a year of change at the Foundation; a new Foundation President, Dave Steigerwald and myself as the new Executive Director. We have relied heavily on the support of all of our volunteers and for this we are very grateful. We certainly can’t do it without all of you. In addition we say goodbye to some very important people to our school community, retiring teachers: Mimi Ralston, Dave Emmerson, Pat Richardson, Mark Embree, and Patty Cameron whose devotion to our kids has been very much appreciated. Finally as we welcome our new Principal Bryan Marcus we say farewell to two of the most dedicated administrators in any District, Kyle Ruggles and Bjorn Paige. We wish them the very best in the future. Arts A Year of Accomplishments By Janice Itterman, Executive Director, LCCHS Foundation Academics Athletics

As I reflect on the 2013-2014 school year I am continuously awestruck by all of the accomplishments at La Costa Canyon High School. We’ve won awards for academic achievements, sent 95% of our students on to college, won prestigious awards in the Arts and numerous CIF titles in Athletics. Walking through campus one quickly realizes that our students are much more than their accomplishments. They are good and caring citizens with a bright future ahead of them. They are quick to come to the aid of a friend in need and they are always willing to volunteer. This is a direct reflection on

Volunteers

This Year’s Grants

During the 2013-2014 School year we were able to Grant money to the following areas:

18 Chrome Books Grad Night Band for a new Sousaphone Math for Calculus Camp Visual Arts for Art supplies Ceramics/Sculpture for clay Avid for Field trip A scanner for Social Sciences A wireless headset for Dance Brain Pop Software for Special Ed Camera for Photo Class Funding for Vocal Coach Lab Equipment for Science Funding for Computer Science Program Video Cameras for Video and Film Program Holocaust Survivor to Speak in History Funds for Speech & Debate School Website

“Within our department we are running lab experiments, demonstrations and other activities that we feel are the best way for students to come to a lasting understanding about the world in which we live. Their curiosity is stimulated much more when they are actually experiencing science phenomena instead of passively reading, listening or watching recordings. We recognize that what we do would not be possible without your support”. ~ LCC Science

TEACHER TESTIMONIALS

“Instructing 50 students and having my voice heard over music can be a challenge (impossible actually). The new headset you gave me allows be to teach without no stopping and starting the music to disrupt the momentum of movement or learning and students will stay interested because they are getting immediate feedback” ~ Ms. Rushing

The foundation’s 16 board members represent just a fraction of the hundreds of volunteers we have at the school who spend countless hours helping with fundraising efforts to serve our student and teacher needs.

Would you like to: Support your student and

teachers? Share your talent and energy

with a group of caring individuals?

Experience a sense of pride in your accomplishments?

Meet like-minded people? Have an incredible amount of

fun while doing all of the above?

The LCC Foundation is recruiting volunteers to help us fulfill our vision of excellence. What better way to ensure your child receives a “Straight A” Education than by investing your time in his/her future.

Please join the team!

We need volunteers for:

Boosters Committees, Including:

La Costa Canyon High School is a place where bright energetic and motivated students and teachers work together in and outside the classroom to accomplish amazing things. Home to the Mavericks, La Costa Canyon High School services over 2,000 students of varying diversity and financial means with 13% of our population on a reduced lunch program.

The La Costa Canyon Foundation was founded in 1996 as a non-profit organization to help provide an environment and resources suited to effective teaching and learning. Our mission is to enhance the academics and arts at LCC, while supporting athletics, which equates to a shared vision of excellence for all students. As a direct result of the budget cuts to education it has become even more imperative that we receive community investment in our school, in order for our students to continue to gain an outstanding education. Whether working on a dissection project in Biology, a Sculpture piece in Art, attending a work based Computer Science class or travelling to a Speech and Debate tournament, all of these programs have been made possible through the generous gifts made to the La Costa Canyon High School Foundation.

Every year the La Costa Canyon High School Foundation has a dream that we will make a difference in the lives of our students. The San Dieguito School District serves the basic needs of our students, but our school receives on average of $1000 less funding per student as most schools in the San Diego area because we are classified as a basic aide school.

“Everybody loves STEM education these days. The urgent need for the United States to compete on a global scale with countries like China and India — which are producing large numbers of students proficient in science, technology, engineering and math — has spurred a national conversation about increasing STEM education in all schools across the country.

President Obama and his administration have significantly invested in promoting STEM education, to the tune of $3.1 billion in federal funding. In an effort to prove how serious he is about the government’s commitment to STEM, President Obama held a science fair at the White House to promote STEM superstars, during which he gamely jumped on a stationary bike to power a water-filtering system using his kinetic energy. STEM, the president argues, is worth getting excited about. "We've got to make sure that we're training great calculus and biology teachers, and encouraging students to keep up with their physics and chemistry classes. . . . It means teaching proper research methods and encouraging young people to challenge accepted knowledge. It means expanding and maintaining critical investments in biomedical research and helping innovators turn their discoveries into new businesses and products. And it means maintaining that spirit of discovery," Obama said during a recent address of the National Academy of Sciences. While the potential economic impact of producing more STEM professionals is intriguing, there are even more immediate benefits to STEM education.” Yet here at La Costa Canyon these programs go under funded. Did you know we don’t have a robotics Program? Did you know that the Science department relies on $15,000 in donations from the foundation every year? This is where you can help. If you have contacts in the corporate world that would be interested in giving to our programs please call the LCC Foundation.

Band

Did you know La Costa Canyon has the only marching band in the District? This year alone they visited Disneyland and were invited to play over in Hawaii. Not only does our band program offer spirit at our football games it sets the tone for spirit at our school.

Dance

Due to the popularity of this program we employee a full time Dance Teacher. Next year we will be welcoming back our competitive Dance team.

Theater

What an exciting time for the theater this year. A successful run of Romeo and Juliet followed by our school musical Once Upon a Mattress. With the help of our outstanding vocal coach teacher Mrs. Fagan are starring female actress went on to win the Ben Vereen Award at the Spreckles Theater.

There isn’t a better way to showcase La Costa Canyon’s visual and performing arts programs than in picture. Like other Programs at the school our visual and performing arts department also needs your support not only financially but by attending all of the wonderful performances. We have amazing programs right here in our backyard.

Athletics

Over 70% of the children who attend La Costa Canyon are student Athletes. Many go on to pursue College Careers. We are fortunate enough to receive donations of over $1million to allow these programs to be successful. Investors like our parents and surrounding community help to keep the athletics thriving at LCC by allowing for top notch coaches, trainers, tournaments and facilities. During the year our Athletic Boosters hold numerous funding raising activities including: A Garage Sale, Maverick Mile and the Annual Golf Tournament. This helps to offset some of the expenses.

This year our athletic programs won 13 League Titles and 7 CIF Titles making them one of the most competitive in the nation.
