How We Teach• We all teach the same material• The way we teach it MATTERS• Who the teacher is MATTERS
Things to Avoid?• Jargon
– Use a context that novice cyclists can understand and relate to
• Spandex/Lycra– Yes, it has its place. Demonstrate that bicycling can be
“normal”• Scaring students
– Emphasize positive aspects (especially for trails students)– Save the “risk” and “crash” conversations for later
Remember WABA’s Education Goals?
• After Every Class, Ask Yourself:– Can students get on and ride?• Effectively?• Safely?
– Can students find answers to their questions?– Can students pass on their knowledge?– Can students get involved?
