John H. Knox, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment and Henry C. Lauerman Professor of International Law at Wake Forest University School of Law John Knox is an internationally recognized expert on human rights law and international environmental law. As UN Special Rapporteur, he is preparing a series of reports to the Human Rights Council on the relationship of human rights and environmental protection.

“IP in the Trees” Scholar Workshop Series
The seventh annual intellectual property workshop series will bring a mix of senior scholars and rising stars to campus for enriching and challenging conversations with our faculty, students, and the local IP bar. The workshops provide a forum for scholars to discuss their ideas and to receive feedback from participants.

Business Law Forum: Innovating Corporate Social Responsibility: From the Local to the GlobalOCTOBER 7, 2016
This forum will explore the latest legal and contractual innovations for promoting corporate social responsibility, from cutting-edge company and community practices to new or emerging laws and standards. Leading scholars, practitioners, and in-house counsel will consider ways that local communities are influencing corporate behavior; new obligations for companies to disclose environmental and social risks; and international treaties and standards that are shaping domestic laws and corporate policies.

Charlotte Blattner, PhD, MLawCharlotte Blattner is an attorney specializing in general public international law, private international law, and international economic law. She recently received her PhD in international law and animal law at the University of Basel, Switzerland. Ms. Blattner plans to use her expertise in the further development of animal law as it intersects with states’ regulatory authority to protect animals across borders.

Marcilynn Burke, Associate Dean and Professor of Law, University of HoustonProfessor Burke’s expertise is in environmental, natural resources, land use, and property law. She has served at the U.S. Department of the Interior and as the Acting Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management helping develop federal land use, resource management, and regulatory oversight policies.

Cheryl Demmert Fairbanks, Esq.Mrs. Fairbanks works in the area of Indian law as an attorney and tribal court of appeals justice. Her legal practice and consultation services concentrate on tribal-state relations, personnel, tribal courts, peacemaking and family conferencing, mediation, family, school, education, and indigenous law. Ms. Fairbanks is Tlingit-Tsimpshian and is a former teacher and school administrator. She also worked as
senior policy analyst with the New Mexico Office of Indian Affairs in the area of state-tribal relations. Fairbanks will teach two courses at the law school in spring 2017.

Oregon Governor Kate Brown Governor Brown is a 1985 graduate of Lewis & Clark Law School. During her more than 25 years of service in Oregon, she served as secretary of state for two terms and was the first woman to serve as majority leader of the Oregon Senate. Brown has a distinguished record for increasing government accountability and standing up for working families.
