í. Procedure and purpose
Eag|eBurgmann Germany GmbH & Co. KG, Wolfratshausen, commissioned TÚV sÚD !ndustrie

2E-5 series to verify its compliance with a specific leakage rate of the TA-Luft standard,

EagleBurgmann Germany GmbH & Co. KG / data sheet
The data sheet of the valve stem packing set EagleBurgmann BuraTAL@ T3 9650/T3 has been
submitted to the test body.
The test requirements are listed below:
Measurement of the actual gas leakage rates to the atmosphere occurring under different
service conditions (practice relevance) in the packing sets
Assessment of the measured gas leakage rates for compliance with the TA-Luft standard
based on the above testing principles
The purpose and objective of the iest is to assess the defined criteria to ensure a constantly low
leakage rate in ongoing operation in accordance with the leakage rate of < 1 x 10-a mbar*l/(m*s)
defined in VDI 2440.

2. General requirements defined in the TA-Luft standard for shut-off and control devices
ln VDI 2440, Section 3.3.1.3, the TA-Luft standard defines the following requirements forthe
design of shut-off and control devices.
The requirements refer to applications involving the use of liquid organic substances or sub-
stance mixtures with certain proportions of toxic substances.
One measure specified to ensure'leak tightness is to design the sealing systems as metal
bellows with downstream safety gland. Other sealing systems are also permissible under the
TA-Luft standard provided they are of equivalent quality.
The TA Luft standard, however, contains no information about other permissible types or about
the criteria which may be used to decide whether a certain valve is acceptable or not.
ln light of the above, TUV SUD lndustrie Service GmbH, lnstitute for Plastics, developed the
above test standard.
ln its letter oÍ 24 March 1995, reference number Ill 2.6, the Federal Environment Agency
approved this test standard.
3. Test proqramme
ln co-operation with EagleBurgmann GmbH & Co. KG, Wolfratshausen, the Institute for Plas-
tics developed a test programme which caters to the requirements of the TA-Luft standard in
terms of the above testing principles and the service conditions of the shut-off and control
devices.
The test programme covers the following aspects:
Verification of compliance with the required leakage rate of 10-a mbar*l/(m*s) measured by
means of a helium mass spectrometer at the sealing system at service conditions.

5. Test process and results
The test process and the test results are outlined below.
ln addition, we evaluated the individual test results.
Leakage measurement (Number 2 oÍ test programme)
Measuring of leakage rate as per VDa2440 /Dl 3479 using a helium mass spectrometer:
Test description:
The leakage rate measured with the help of a mass spectrometer is proportionate to the helium
concentration in the test room. A suitable procedure is selected to adjust this concentration.
For this purpose, helium is applied to a sealed valve until the service pressure is reached and the
valve then filled several times.
The leakage rate is determined for the first time before and then continuously during the defined
duty cycles.
Following the defined number of duty cycles, the valve is heated up to the defined servlce tem-
perature !
Once the valve has cooled down to room temperature, the leakage rate is determined again.
Steps must be taken to ensure that internal helium pressure levels are maintained throughout the
entire measuring period. A conservative, i.e. linear approach is applied to extrapolate or convert
the measured leakage rate.
The valve complies with the TA Luft standard if the leakage rate is 1 x < 10-a mbar*l/(m"s).

Result:
The measurement was conducted with a helium mass spectrometer at the above conditions.
The measured values must be assumed to be higher than the actual vatues as evacuation didnot take place directly at the sealing system, so that in view of the time passed and the fact thathelium is inert, the measured teakage may be higher than the actual leakage rate.
Measurement of the leakage rate revealed that the values measured in accordance with the testprogramme comply with the requirements.
6. Summarv and evaluation

Evaluation of the leakage rate revealed that the values measured in accordance with the test
programme complied with the requirements.
In our opinion, the design and assembly documents meet the requirements.
ln our opinion, at the above test conditions the design of the above valve is equivalent with the
leakage criterion of the TA-Luft standard, Section 5.2.6.4,VDl 2440, November 2000 edition,
Section 3.3.1.3 orVDl 3479, May 2002 edition, Section 3.4.2.
