Lutterworth MarketA Charter to hold a market inLutterworth was granted to Nicholas deVerdon in 1214 by King John. By 1509, commercial activity was

centred around the market place wherethe Neats Market (Market Street) met theHigh Street. It was at this point that thetown’s market cross, the High Cross, stood. Nearby were the two importantmarket buildings, the fleshamills for thesale of meat and the drapery for the sale ofcloth. It may be that marketing activity ofone sort or another stretched more or lesscontinuously from the northern end ofthe Neats Market right through the townto the Stone Cross at the outer end ofWoodmarket, at least at annual fairs, ifnot on weekly market days. Whatever theextent of the market however, it is certainthat its most important business wascentred around the area where the presentThursday Market stands and where nodoubt it has stood continuously since1214. There is evidence for the sale of bread

corn and seed corn in Lutterworth Marketin the early middle ages. The volume ofthis business must have increased greatlyin the later sixteenth century and Burtonthe Historian, noted ‘the exceeding goodcorn in great abundance’, no doubt sold inthe corn market, as the most conspicuousfeature of the town’s Thursday market. In 1607, a letter was sent to the Mayor

of Leicester from the Rector ofLutterworth and other inhabitants, praying that the tradesmen of Leicestermight be prevented from attending theLutterworth Market for fear that theymight convey a recent outbreak of theplague into the town. The ground floor of the Town Hall,

built in 1836, was originally open toprovide for corn dealing and cheese andbutter marketing. It was enclosed at theturn of the century. In October 1923 the Market Tolls and

Rights were purchased from the Lord ofthe Manor, the Earl of Denbigh for £150and these and all rights exercised by himin connection with them, being nowvested in the Town Estates Trust.M.J.Gamble

Broughton Astley W.I.Alan Buzza came along to tell us about the fundraising he has done for the charity JOLT –Journey of a Life Time – which supports youngpeople who have special needs. Back in 2002 hestarted out from Carlisle with no money, noclothes and no possessions of any sort. He thentravelled around the country by the generosity oftravel companies, local people and businesses, which provided him with clothes, food, accommodation and travel, all the time raisingmoney for the charity. He was even given a freeflight to Australia and raised money from therugby fans. By the end of his adventure he hadraised a total of £10,000 for JOLT.On the 27th March at 7.30pm in Broughton

Computer SpecificationsExplained

If you could afford it, would you buy aFerrari or some other ‘supercar’ if youknew that you could only drive it to thesupermarket and back, but no where else?Of course not - you would not want to payfor engine power that you are not using, sowhat would be the point? The same applies to computers – don’t let

any sales jargon and the ‘latest and greatest’specification fool you into thinking that youneed to overspend. As we sell laptop anddesktop computers this is something weexplain to customers every day.Technology is always advancing but for

example, if you are only using a computerjust to go on the internet and do basic thingslike type documents, then you simply don’tneed a high specification computer. As thecurrent standard is 4GB of ‘Random AccessMemory’ and ‘500GB’ hard drive, for basictasks that is all you need. Yes, having aspecification that’s double that sounds good, but it wouldn’t be used for everyday tasks.Similarly a computer processor is the hard

working component that dictates a lot of thespeed of the machine. The least powerful ofthe common processors is a ‘Celeron’, then‘Pentium’, then the ‘Core i3’,’ i5’ and ‘i7’. TheCore i3 is the standard processor forbusiness computers and homes where moreintensive programs are used, such asPhotoshop i5 processors tend to be used bygamers and tasks involving seriousresources, such as speech recognition. So the next time you are in the market for

a computer, don’t be blinded by science –research what you need and stick to it!For advice and sales, please see advert

below.

High Court Judgement – Ivan Crane v Secretary of StateSDCLG and Harborough District Council

The Parish Council is delighted with the judgment issued by Mr Justice Lindblomconcerning the appeal made by Ivan Crane. The appeal was against the decision madeby the Secretary of State and Harborough District Council in respect of their refusalto grant permission for the construction of 111 dwellings and associatedinfrastructure off Crowfoot Way, Broughton Astley. The judgment confirms that the proposal to develop the site was in direct conflict with

the Neighbourhood Plan for Broughton Astley. We believe that the outcome of this HighCourt appeal will now give many other parishes around the country which aredeveloping Neighbourhood Plans, the confidence to pursue their plans with thecommunities they represent. The Parish Council has always considered the proposed site for the development to be

unsuitable for a major development, being remote from the centre of the village and itsexisting amenities. This view was supported by the residents of Broughton Astley duringthe Neighbourhood Plan Consultation Process which identified sites more suitable fordevelopment. As a result of the development of the Neighbourhood Plan, land has been allocated for

2 major development sites which will bring forward an additional 509 dwellings duringthe next 15 years with much needed new retail, leisure and medical facilities for thevillage. We would like to thank Harborough District Council for the support given to the

Parish Council whilst the Broughton Astley Neighbourhood Plan was being developedand with their robust defence of the policies it contains at the highest level of the justicesystem.

SPORTS MASSAGE CLINICWho is it for?

The short answer is that sports massage canbenefit anyone who engages in physicalactivity for sport, leisure or work, irrespective of age, level of training, level offitness or your training or work schedule. Sports massage can be of benefit by

reducing muscular stiffness and easingmuscular aches and pains and by improvingmuscle balance and mobility. It acts by improving the circulation,

ridding the muscles of lactic acid and othertoxins which arise as a result of workinghard, as well as re-aligning muscle andconnective tissue following soft tissueinjuries. So if you have lower back pain, shoulder

pain, headaches or muscle stiffness, achesand tension in your upper or lower body –sports massage can help you to feel like yourold self again. See advert below for more details.

A Brain of Two HalvesThe human brain is comprised of a left side and aright side with each side responsible for differentfunctions. The left side looks after logical thinking, lists, linearity, words, numbers, sequence andanalysis, whilst the right side takes care of rhythm, colour, imagination, daydreaming, specialawareness and music, amongst other things. We also know that our brains have thousands of

protuberances on thousands more ‘arms’ on millionsof brain cells and these protuberances are connectedby electrochemical impulses that form patterns andconnections with each other. In fact, it has beenestimated that a normal brain can make connectionsand pathways in excess of... 1 followed by 10 millionkilometres of noughts on a standard typeface! It has also been shown that use of one side of the

brain more or less exclusively results in severelyreducing the application of the benefits of the otherside (although this can be overcome... you can teachan old dog new tricks!).However, right and left brain activity refers to the

‘newer’ part of our brain in evolutionary terms, whichis the upper part and known as the conscious mind. This is primarily responsible for your intellectualactivities and can only pay specific attention to aroundseven pieces of information at any one time, depending upon complexity etc. However, the ‘older’and physically lower par t of the brain, yourunconscious, has been shown to be processing (andstoring) over 11 million pieces of information at anyone time! It is also believed to be in charge of youremotions which, because of our evolution, tend to‘kick-in’ automatically as we go through daily life. Infact, it makes far more connections (and thereforeimpact) on the ‘thinking’ (conscious) mind thanhappens the other way.In our culture, we tend to develop the left side of

the brain with our emphasis on the ‘three R’s’ ofreading, writing and arithmetic. So, we have toprocess an awful lot more information with ouremotional selves using a predominantly rationalprocess at the conscious level, making lots of randomconnections and we wonder why we experience somuch inner conflict, anxiety and illness! Whichexplains why our emotions frequently ‘get the better’of us. Hypnotherapy makes use of the naturally occurring

phenomena known as hypnosis (or trance) to connectwith and utilise the power of your unconscious mindso as to reconcile or align your conscious andunconscious minds, even though your consciousmay well remain completely unaware of what getsreconciled and most of my clients find it to be a highlyrelaxing and beneficial experience. So, why not find out if hypnotherapy could be the

solution you’re looking for and call Ivan now for yourFREE initial consultation on 07970 004993 or 01455446314.

FEETChilblains80% of women who came to mysurgery in February complained of cold feet. 75% caused itthemselves. If a man walked round in thin nylon pop socksor no socks and a thin cotton skirt, gale force 10 blowinground his ankles, shoes that just about covered his toes andhe complained about his cold blue feet he would get funnylooks but no sympathy. Yet women do it even if it’s -10c andblame it on chilblains. If you've never had a chilblain you may wonder what thefuss is about – and why some people quake in theirsheepskin boots when the weather gets chilly.Chilblains are painful, burning or itchy red and blue patchesthat appear on extremities such as the fingers, feet, ears ornose. One in 10 people suffer from them when these partsof the body are suddenly warmed up after being exposed tothe cold (winter is peak season for chilblains). Mostlywomen suffer and young girls from 7 - puberty andmenopausal women indicating that it can often be hormonalrelated.Chilblains are caused by poor circulation in response to thecold. Damp is the worst enemy. The tiny blood vesselsunder the skin narrow in low temperatures. When the skinwarms up again they become leaky and fluid gets into thesurrounding tissue, causing inflammation. To prevent themyou should warm your skin gently after being out in thecold: don't wrap yourself around the radiator when you gethome. When outside keep your limbs and face warm withthermals, layers of loose clothing and a hat. Don't rest yourfeet on a hot water bottle in bed but wear socks instead. If these preventative measures don't work and yourchilblains are painful, purple and itchy beyond belief, youshould you go to your doctor or treat them yourself. Most people never see the doctor for chilblains, as they tendto go on their own if you don't scratch or apply direct heatto them. If your chilblain seems infected (warm, red andsore), then you should get it looked at. Chilblains can be dueto conditions such as Raynauds Syndrome which causesthe circulation to the fingers and toes to be interrupted, often by the cold. The fingers and toes can look deathlywhite then blue and red. During these colour changes theymay be very painful. If you think that you have this condition you should see yourfoot carer. If you have diabetes and get chilblains you shouldalso see your doctor as they are more likely to get infected. If you have them repeatedly out of chilblain season youshould be checked for underlying connective tissuedisorders. However, there isn't much evidence that anything healschilblains any faster than nature and common sense, iethick socks, warm boots and stopping draughts and dampfrom your knees downwards. Lutterworth Footcare willalways give free advice if you’re not sure, but if you see aman in a floral cotton dress and blue feet don’t send him tome! David Attewell

BONES &GROANS

FRACTURESFractures are a very common condition treated byChartered Physiotherapists especially in icy weather. The first misconception is that a fracture is worse than abreak in a bone or some people think it is less severe, “Noit isn’t broken, only fractured”. In fact the 2 terms areinterchangeable and mean exactly the same. A compound fracture is where the bone ends exit throughthe skin and a fracture-dislocation is where the nearby jointis out of place as well. One of the commonest fractures is a Colles fracture of thewrist. Usually this results from a fall onto an out-stretchedhand. Once the wrist is out of plaster early physiotherapy isvital to restore full function and prevent complex regionalpain syndrome (also known as Sudecks atrophy). Manypeople think that the plaster will be removed to reveal aperfectly healed limb but often it is swollen and covered indark hair and dead, flaking skin. Then the hard workbegins to get you back to normal and a Physiotherapist canhelp you every step of the way.Not all fractures are put into plaster. Some may be screwedor plated by an orthopaedic surgeon. In the case of legfractures this enables patients to get up and about muchmore quickly. Gentle weight-bearing makes the fractureheal more strongly and a physiotherapist can help you towalk the best way you can.In the case of a humerus fracture of the shoulder, it may beleft alone and just put in a sling. Pain is a big issue here, especially at night. Physiotherapy is essential after afracture to restore your movement, strength (muscles take6 times as long to build up as they do to waste away, soprolonged immobilisation will lead to extreme weakness)and get you back to work and play. To see a CharteredPhysiotherapist privately you do not need to be referred byyour Doctor. For more information or to arrangephysiotherapy treatment contact:

Lutterworth Speakers ClubWhat is an I Pad? Anything to do with an eye pad? Or perhaps an eye patch - as worn bypirates? ‘I Pads in schools’ was the topic given to Lutterworth Speakers ‘Tag Topics’ team in arecent evening get together with Barwell Cedars Speakers Club and we opted for the moreunusual interpretation. This resulted in a fairly silly presentation about children dressing inpirate costumes for World Book Day, with Health and Safety concerns over the constructionof a pirate ship and the use of its attendant plank featuring quite strongly.Barwell's team had the more sober topic of the retirement age going back to 70, with the likely

ramifications of this unpopular move. The evening also featured speeches from Edward Taylorabout global weather and young Thomas Roe from Barwell about his future career.Such club get togethers are part of the activities of the South East Leicestershire Speakers Clubs

and help foster ideas and forge friendships. Whether you are an experienced speaker or a nervous novice we provide support and encouragement in a friendly and fun environment. We meet at the Greyhound Inn, Lutterworth, 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month, 7.30 - 9.30pm.

Lutterworth U3A In February a return visit by Space Expert Andrew Loundtook his audience out into space whilst rooted in their seats. The story of space flight from its early beginnings to todayand on into the future was unfolded by Andrew through histalk and the on screen pictures. He left the audience with thethought that in 20 years or so it may be possible to fly toAustralia in 25 minutes. The Lutterworth interest groups are back in full flow. The

Bird Watching Group has been studying bird behaviour as thespring nesting season arrives. Walkers have been out and aboutand in April a large group will embark on the spring walkingholiday in Ilfracombe.March is always an exciting month as the new committee is

elected. At the meeting Glenys Pebverley will stand down fromher role as Chairman after her second term of office. Glenysfounded Lutterworth U3A 12 years ago and was invited back tothe Chair in the 10th Anniversary year. The group has much to thank her and other founding officers

for in making this organisation so hospitable and wellestablished.

ULLESTHORPE W.I.The February meeting was devoted to a serious subject‘Demystifying Defibrillators’. Pete Sweatman, CommunityFirst Responder, talked members through the procedureneeded to be implemented in the event of a cardiac arrest. The technique was described - Pete first explained the

importance of oxygen to the body; the lungs enable enrichedoxygen carrying blood to pass into the body so if breathingceases organs start to decay in 4 minutes, to check breathinglook, listen and feel, make sure airway is clear, check if casualtyis conscious, alert, responsive to voice command andresponsive to pain (pressure exerted on collar bones willestablish this). An unresponsive casualty warrants animmediate 999 ambulance call with an 8 minute response time.Illuminate the house well so the ambulance can find it readily.Fibrillation occurs when the heart beat is out of phase and is

the symptom of a cardiac arrest. The excruciating pain is feltdeep in the central chest area and usually continues to worsen(but sometimes there is no pain). To ease pain, sit on floor withback resting against a wall and raise knees so the body is in a“W” shape. The ambulance call receiver will identify from thepost code if there is a defibrillator within 500m and providingthat the casualty will not be left on their own, will give the fourfigure access code for the box. The defibrillator is foolproofgiving instructions beginning with bare the chest, diagramsshow where to fix two sticky contacts (chest hair may have tobe shaved) and the machine then relates clearly what it isdoing. It will not work if a heart beat is detected so keep awayfrom the patient. After the shock is administered, chest compressions for 2

minutes are recommended which entail 2” deep depressions100 per minute. These are administered by the heel section ofone hand with the other hand above, to the centre chestbetween nipples and because the activity is exhausting a shortrest after each 30 is recommended. This should take place on arigid surface like the floor. If patient coughs or vomits, place inthe recovery position. If there is still no response a furthershock will be administered.Pete was thanked for both his excellent talk and

demonstration by Ivy Hall. The Rose Bowl for 2014's monthly competitions was won by

June Whiting and the February competition winner was LindaHollingworth.Enquiries may be made on 01455 202499.

Lutterworth Townswomens’ GuildA quiz night was held at the February meeting as theproposed speaker was ill and unable to attend. Membershad great fun racking their team brains to unscrambleanagrams and solving clues to discover the names of sweetsand chocolate and place names in Great Britain. Member Rita Walters was recently surprised at a TG

Federation meeting to be awarded her 40 year service badgefrom the National Federation Chairman. At the Marchmeeting ‘You be the Judge’ will be the topic. Please call 01455 554323 for details if you would like to

Lutterworth Wine CircleFebruary brought us a little ‘sunshine’ in the way of wines fromNew Zealand. Jamie, the Manager of the Market Harboroughbranch of ‘Majestic Wine’, had a free reign to make the choice anddeliver to our members an experience to taste some of the bestNew Zealand wines available and we weren’t disappointed. This meeting also saw two new prospective members, who are now

members, so they must have really enjoyed the evening. We started the evening with a Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc 2014

from Marlborough, finely crisp with tones of melon, peach andtropical fruit and hint of capsicum. Our second, another Marlborough white, from Saint Clair Pioneer

Block Gruner Veltliner 2013, light nose delicate citrus and peachtones, full ripe peach fruit with dry finish. The first red to try was a Herringbone Hills Pinot Noir 2010, from

Marlborough district at Ara. A wine with an intensely fruity nosewhich carried through to taste strawberries and cherries inabundance, finishing with a subtle savoury overtone. The second red was Roaring Meg Pinot Noir 2012 from Central

Otago. This gave a balanced mix of red and blackberry fruit with ahint of oak spice finishing with soft tannins and fruit aftertaste. The last wine from Hawkes Bay, the Craggy Range Te Kahu 2011,

a red of some substance. Lots of darkbrambly fruit and black cherry with ripetannins, sweet spice, vanilla and whitepepper.Peter Betts - Chairman.Telephone 01455 554110.

Have your say on proposed changes tothe mobile library serviceFollowing a public consultation in 2014, Leicestershire CountyCouncil agreed a new library service to meet ongoing budgetchallenges. We now need to ensure that the mobile library servicecan meet local needs with an effective, flexible and reliable serviceacross Leicestershire. In order to do this we are consulting on anumber of proposals. The Council is proposing to:• change the frequency of visits to locations currently served by a

mobile library to either once every 3 weeks or once a month from a current fortnightly visit• update the network of mobile library stops to take account of new

developments and to reflect actual service usage• make any changes from September this year.Consultation documents, including a survey are available at

Q: I’ve been struggling with my finances for a while and now it’s got tothe point where I can’t afford bills like council tax or my mortgage. I’mworried that if I can’t find a solution soon, I might have to sell my home. What can I do?A: The months after Christmas can be particularly tough with extraexpenses over the festive period putting even more pressure on householdbudgets. If you are facing New Year debts don’t panic. With the right help there are ways toget on top of your outstanding bills.Firstly, the earlier you get help with debt problems the easier it is to get them sorted. Trying

to carry on as if everything is normal can make things worse, as debts can pile up quickly.Letting your creditors, like your mortgage company or local council, know if you will be unableto pay them is key. Creditors should consider reasonable repayment plans and may be able tooffer you more time to pay.It is important that you prioritise paying certain debts, such as the rent, mortgage or energy

bills, first to keep a roof over your head and the heating on. Depending on your circumstancesyou may be able to get support through benefits, so it is worth checking this with theDepartment for Work and Pensions. If you are unable to pay your council tax debt the localauthority may agree to let you pay a reduced payment over a longer period or even inexceptional circumstances write off the debt, but you will have to keep paying your ongoing billgoing forward. Drawing up a proper budget of your expenses can help identify areas you can cut down on.

Before you turn to a loan to cover costs, think carefully and find out what this means for anyfuture repayments and interest that will be due on the loan. Citizens Advice Bureaux offer free, confidential and independent advice, can help work out costs and negotiate with your creditorsand may be able to help you get debt free by looking at appropriate options available for you. Lutterworth CAB at the One Stop Shop, Gilmorton Road is open 10am-3pm Mon & Thurs.

LEIRE W.I. Victoria Blackwell steppedin at short notice to give members aninteresting talk on The Body Shop at Home, which is the online branch of the well knownretail Body Shop. Victoria was passionateabout her subject and greatly admired the lateAnita Roddick who started the Body Shop ina small premises on a back street in Brighton.Anita, who was a human rights activists and

environmental campaigner was not interestedin making money but wanted to help, not onlyher clients but also her suppliers, who lived inpoverty stricken countries and provided thepure and organic substances that Anita put inher products. A real emphasis was put onnatural ingredients that were ethically sourcedand cruelty free. Now the range consists of over300 products and there are more than 2,500stores worldwide. In 1987 the Body Shop joined the Fair Trade

programme, which, at that time was in itsinfancy. In 1989 Anita and her husband

Gordon started The Body Shop Foundationwhich enabled the business to supportinnovative charities across the world. By 2014£300,000,000 had been raised. One such charity was called Children on the

Edge and for the past 2 years The Body Shop atHome has focussed on raising money forchildren living in a Soweto Slum in Jinga,Uganda and they have provided a safe centrefor children to meet and play. They alsoresourced agricultural schemes that providefood for vulnerable households.Anita was made a Dame in 2006 and shortly

after this she sold the entire business to L’Orealbut stipulated that all her principles and ethicswere to continue unchanged. Also support forThe Body Shop Foundation was to becontinued. Sadly Anita Roddick died suddenlyof a brain haemorrhage in 2007.After Victoria’s talk, members enjoyed trying

the variety of samples of lotions that Victoriahad brought with her and there were productsavailable to buy or order.

Blaby Bowls Saturday 11th April is thedate for the men’s first outdoor game and atpresent we are busy working on the green for aprompt start. Two notable absentees will beAndy Irons and Steve Boot. Andy has decided not to play due to his

fingers which he injured in an industrialaccident, still having not healed enough for hiscomfort. Steve and his wife have decided to takean early retirement and go and live in Turkey. Our Easter bingo takes place on Saturday

28th March when another full house isanticipated. Our latest indoor game saw ustravel to Barwell and come away victorious 120

shots to 115. Skip, Barbara Hextall won againbut our best winning Rink by 35 to 16 was thatof Brian Hawkins, Mal and Dave Goddard andJill Cleaver. The men’s pre season meeting takesplace on Thursday 19th March at 7.30, whilstthe ladies meet on 9th April at 9.45am.Important matters for the forthcoming

season will be discussed at these meetings andyour presence is required. Lastly it was sad tohear of the passing away of former PresidentBill Matts. Our recent members will not haveknown him as he has not bowled for some years, nevertheless we all pass on our sincerecondolences.

But Chocolate is justChocolate isn’t it?We often think that people intimes gone by had a betterquality of life than we do, despite all of theconveniences of modern day life, butimagine an Easter without chocolate! In UK and Europe, the earliest Easter eggs

were painted and decorated using hen, duck orgoose eggs and only evolved into artificial eggsby the end of the 17th Century, but still nochocolate! The first chocolate eggs didn’tappear until the beginning of the 19th Centuryin Germany and France and were solid eggs.Making hollow eggs was very difficult becausethe chocolate used today didn’t exist and theydidn’t become widespread until well into the20th Century when modern chocolate makingprocesses were developed. We can be fairly sure that the 19th Century

eggs wouldn’t have been labelled as clearly andinformatively as the eggs on sale today!Perhaps when you choose an Easter egg you

base your choice on whether it has Hello Kittyon the front or Ben Ten on the box or do youtry and work out which has the thickest shellor the most Smarties? Or if you have a moresophisticated taste perhaps it’s the number ofBelgian truffles hidden inside?

Enjoy your egg whichever it is!! Happy Easter!

Claybrooke History & Heritage Group welcomed back Phillip Warren, Principal Curator of Leicester Museum Service, for the February meeting in Claybrooke School Hall. Andrew has a wealth of knowledge in the clothing fashions through the ages andon this occasion he revealed how clothing was influenced by the culture changes during and after the First World War. This was a periodwhen women were called upon to tackle many of the jobs hitherto carried out by the menfolk who had gone off to the trenches. After thewar the pinched waists of women’s styles gave way to more relaxed and loose fitting dresses and trousers. Andrew always has a gift forholding his audience with his knowledge and delivery of the topic and this was no exception. In March the story of the restoration of National Trust property Stoneywell was brought to the school hall by Alan Tyler. Stoneywell is an

Arts & Crafts cottage and one of only two NT properties that can bevisited in Leicestershire. Alan informed members that this cottagewith its gardens, outbuildings and woodland has been lovinglyrestored thanks to the generosity of donors and he explained theimportance of this property and of the history of the arts and craftmovement of the time with its influence on design and countryliving far and wide. The Group meets on the second Tuesday in the month at

Claybrooke School Hall, meetings start at 7.50pm. Details of joiningand of forthcoming programmes can be obtained from GroupSecretary Pam Scrine on 01455 209500 or the Chairman.

John O’Groats to Land’s EndAfter 18 years as Manager of Lutterworth VolunteerCentre and being involved with other organisations inthe community, it’s been an interesting week as I standdown from various responsibilities and prepare for myretirement. Lutterworth College, where I have been a Director and

Governor for over 20 years surprised me with a large cakedecorated with a picture ofthe British Isles showingJohn O’Groats to Land’sEnd, a walk which my wifeKath and I will beembarking on; Jane Very, the Catering Managerbaked it; it is magnificentand has been admired andeaten by many people.

It certainly feels a bitscary but exciting at thesame time. It’s only onethousand miles and if you

say it quickly it doesn’t seem so far! Perhaps I should be singingthe Proclaimers’ song ‘500 Miles’ – I looked up the lyrics andthe verse that stood out is:-

“But I could walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more, justto be the man who walked 500 miles to fall down by yourdoor”.

I hope we don’t fall down! We will be raising money for localcharities and I’ll make sure everyone knows how to donate,

(someone hasoffered to sponsorus at £1.00 per mile– I guess they’reconfident we won’tmake it).

We also plan tokeep peopleinformed of ourprogress so if youwant to join us youcan! Lots of peoplehave asked why weare doing this andthe answer is that it’ssomething that’sbeen on the ‘bucketlist’ since I wasgrowing up in London, rather like the London Marathon whichI completed in 2011, aged 60, raising £4,500 for MultipleSclerosis Resource Centre. One more to tick off and then onto the next challenge (not sure what that is yet!)

The picture is of Kath and me out training for our walk inBitteswell, trying out a satnav which hopefully will get us to ourdestination (fingers crossed).

John Warren.

John, we wish you every happiness in your retirement with Kath,it has been a pleasure working with you over the years. Everysuccess with your walk – please keep us updated so that we can letour readers know how you get on. Our very best wishes to you -Trish & Helen – The Lutterworth & District Journal.

Lutterworth PoliceIn the last month we have seen a decrease in burglaries with onlytwo having been reported to Police, one of these was over nightand the other one during the day. Advice from Police is still thesame… remember to lock all doors and windows before going tobed, set your house alarm if you have one fitted but if you don’t,consider getting a professional quote for one. Secure all gates thatlead to the rear of your property and switch on and set anysecurity lights you have, consider having some external lightingfitted if you don’t have any, leave a light on when you go outduring the dark hours as this will give the impression thatsomeone is in, remember, burglars don’t like to be seen and lovedarkness, so light up and deter them. There has been one reported theft of a pedal cycle. As a keen

cyclist myself and some of you may have seen me aroundLutterworth and the villages on my Police cycle, I see too manycycles left outside shops and houses that are not locked up toanything; please lock your bike to something immovable where thelock cannot be lifted over the top. Many cycle owners put their locksjust around the wheels so the bike cannot be ridden or wheeled off;this does not prevent someone from picking the bike up and eitherrunning off with it or putting it in the back of a vehicle and drivingoff with it. Remember, if you have your bike insured, your insurancemay not pay out if they feel that you have not sufficiently securedyour bike before leaving it unattended. There has been one report of a drugs issue, which was dealt with

swiftly as soon as Police were made aware. After receiving calls from members of the public voicing their

concerns about the vulnerability and safety of their neighbours, wevisited three people who Police felt would benefit from a little

helping hand, so afterhaving consultedwith family membersand all relevantagencies, measureswere promptly put into place to providethe assistance needed. We have received one report of damage to a vehicle and five

reports of vehicles being broken in to and some items stolen, themajority of these vehicles targeted have been works vans whereexpensive tools have been taken. Advice from Police would alwaysbe to try to leave your vehicle in a relatively busy place whenunattended, to lock, secure and alarm your vehicle, if possible, havea fixed specialized secure box in your van for your tools and whenleaving your vehicle over night, do not leave any tools in your van ifleft on your driveway or on the road outside your address. Policehave undertaken a campaign to combat this by speaking to manytradesmen and giving crime prevention advice and have left leafletadvice on many works vans were the owner could not be identified.Simple measures can significantly reduce crime against you and

your property. If you would like some Crime Prevention advice or tospeak to Police about any other matter, please contact your localNeighbourhood Team by phoning 101.My forthcoming Beat Surgeries will be at: Lutterworth Library on

Friday 20th March between 2.30 - 4.30pm and Friday 24th Aprilbetween 2.30 - 4.30pm.Please pop in to see me if you have anything that you would like to

discuss, have a question for me or would just like to say Hello, Iwould love to meet you and introduce myself.

The Leicestershire Speakers Pudding Bag Lane to Paradise Row...How well do you remember the place where you grew up? Born and still living in Blaby,Heather Mawbey fascinated us with childhood memories of her village where she grew upin the delightfully named Paradise Row. She recalled the chatting corner where local ladies gossiped and the sign proudly promising

a cinema that was never built. The children formed groups who kept to their own territories. So when eight year old Heather wanted to visit a sick school friend at the other end of thevillage, she was terrified by two fierce women wearing caps and smoking long clay pipes whobarred her way and demanded to know where she was going. Pudding Bag Lane is now ratherboringly called Welford Road.Ann Dixon brought 'One of the Family', a Victorian picture of a cheerful farmhouse

kitchen with the carthorse sharing a titbit over the half door. Ann imagined the happymemories of the farmer's wife as she looked back at the scene in later years.Leicestershire Speakers welcome anyone who would like to learn the art of speaking in

public. Our meetings are supportive, informative and entertaining and aim to help turnnervous wrecks into confident speakers. We meet at 7.30 on the second Wednesday of eachmonth at Blaby. For more information ring Anne Jones on 0116 277 2295 or visit our website

www.leicspeakers.co.uk ~ We also are available to give entertainment and talks to othersocieties and groups.

Dear Editor,Alzheimer’s Society has launched a new guidance booklet onLasting Power of Attorney to help the 12,000 people living withdementia in Leicestershire. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legaltool that allows an individual to state who they would like tomake decisions on their behalf, should they become unable to doso in the future. Shockingly, only two out of ten people living with dementia feel

businesses and organisations understand a person’s rights aroundLasting Power of Attorney, according to a poll carried out byAlzheimer’s Society. Lasting Powers of Attorneys in many cases provide a crucial

lifeline to maintaining independence. Without access, it often leadsto high levels of stress and anxiety for people with dementia andtheir carers, not to mention an inability to use vital services. The Accessing & Sharing Information booklet, produced with

the Office of Public Guardian, is available to download atwww.alzheimers.org.uk/sharinginformationIt will help people to feel confident and empowered with the right

knowledge to exercise their rights. Having a Lasting Power ofAttorney means your choices count, no matter what happens in thefuture. For more information and advice call Alzheimer’s Societyhelpline on 0300 222 1122.

Yours Sincerely, Dave Bassett, Alzheimer’s Society ServicesManager for Leicestershire and Rutland

CLEARING GRANNY’S ATTICLutterworth Museum is not just a Museum for Lutterworth, it holds hundreds of documents, photos& artefacts from the surrounding villages that used to form Lutterworth Rural District. It coverseverywhere from Broughton Astley in a broad sweep via Ashby Magna, Gilmorton &Bruntingthorpe, round Husbands Bosworth, North & South Kilworth, Swinford, Shawell & back toBroughton via Cotesbach, the Claybrookes, Ullesthorpe, Leire & Ashby Parva. If you’re clearing Granny’s attic in this area & you find something you feel shouldn’t be thrown away, please

bring it to us. We can’t accept everything, but if in doubt, please DON’T throw it in the skip or dustbin or burnit - bring it to the Museum & let us decide. So much historical material has been destroyed as rubbish over the last few years & what remains becomes

increasingly precious. Only a few years ago the contents of Sir Frank Whittle’s office in Rugby was being clearedout into a skip as worthless trash. Fortunately, our curator, Geoff Smith was able to rescue some of it. Now it islike gold-dust, much sought after by researchers which shows that even really important things can be disregarded. It is just as important to preserve items from the lives of ‘ordinary’ people. It’s all history and all important. So remember Lutterworth Museum when you’re having a clear out of your own or someone else’s attic - and

not just in Lutterworth! We are at The One Stop Shop, Gilmorton Road, Lutterworth, LE17 4DY. Wendy Warren

Spring House Plant Care Give houseplants their annual spring clean byremoving the dead leaves and washing off the dustthat has accumulated over the winter months. Usethe shower on larger leaved plants using tepid water,it’s very successful! Gently dry the leaves and a leafshine can be used to enhance the foliage. Never useolive oil, milk or furniture polish, as these will clogthe pores! Slightly increase the rate of watering again, giving

cacti their first watering to plump them up and toencourage flowering. Give a liquid houseplant feed toplants which you have had for over six months. This is a good time to take cuttings and make new

plants. The simplest way is in a jar of water and byadding a few drops of plant food to encourage newroots. Choose a healthy, strong growing tip and cut orbreak off 2 - 4 inches. Strip away the lower leaves andrest the cutting in water. In a few weeks roots will beseen. When these are strong enough, pot the new plant, selecting a clean pot no larger than necessary toaccommodate the roots.Alternatively, cuttings can be inserted directly into

the compost. Ivy, Tradescantia (Wandering Jew),Philodendron, Grape Ivy, Spider Plants and manymore can be rooted like this to make new plants. Mosthouse plants need to be repotted annually. The besttime to do this is in spring, when plants are beginningto grow again after a winter period of slow or very littlegrowth. If roots appear through the drainage holes orover the surface of the compost, the plant definitelyneeds repotting into one size larger pot. If the plantdoes not need repotting, ‘refresh’ the top part of thecompost in the existing pot. Plants that are alreadyflowering need good light, although direct light in asouth facing window can scorch the leaves even at thistime of the year, unless the sun is filtered through a netcurtain or blind.
