Interiors take inspiration from the catwalk

IF you're looking for homedecorating ideas this year, simply rustle through yourwardrobe. Chances are you'vealready picked up on some of

the most fashionable looks andcolours – whether that's colourblocking, blues, sorbet shades orflorals – and those trends arebeing echoed in our rooms.

These days, where those couturecatwalks lead, our homes will surelyfollow, but there's no need toslavishly reflect those new looks.Even dedicated decoristas are morelikely to opt for a 'make it work'approach rather than full-on'makeover' as we've all got budgets toconsider.

So simply be inspired by the latestlooks, then decorate and furnish tosuit your personality, lifestyle andpurse.

Home design experts from leadinghigh street stores forecast the trendsand share their tips on creating thelatest looks for rooms.

BOLD & BRIGHTColour will banish the dull days ofwinter and it's being used indramatic splashes in both florals andabstract patterns, says Sue Roberts, head of home design at House ofFraser.

"We're tired of doom and gloomand are looking for a more positiveoutlook and rediscovering our senseof humour," she says.

"That's making us all morecreative and there's a real trend forbold brights or blocks of colourwhich add fun into our homes.Florals will still predominate, whether chintzy, modern or echoingan Eastern theme."

GET THE LOOKLayering is a great way to freshen aroom without breaking the bank, sheadvises. "Use throws and rugs, aswell as fabrics, for blinds, curtains orupholstery echoing your theme.

"If too much pattern makes younervous, experiment by featuring iton cushions and bedding, andintroduce more colour on tablesettings with charger plates, placemats and coloured glassware."

BEST BUYS: Libby Floralbedlinen, duvet cover from £50;colourful Bamboo Lacquered Stool,£40; Designer Kenneth Cole'sMadison bed linen, a duvet coverfrom £40, featuring colour on a greybackground.

GO OVERBOARDGet shipshape with coastal chic orbring the outdoors in with florals, says Sally Bendelow, head of home

design at Marks & Spencer."There's a desire to make a

statement in rooms with key pieceswhich don't break the bank but haveimpact," she says.

"It's easy to pick up on trends withcushions and other accessories suchas lighting. Take a tip from thestylists who use one 'hero' piece tocreate impact."

Florals never go out of fashion, shebelieves, but this year they're beinginterpreted in a softer, lessdominating way, and they also workwell with pastel shades which aregaining ground.

Bendelow believes coastal's appealendures as it's a fresh, informal lookwhich can be dressed up or down.

GET THE LOOK: "Make it smartand chic by contrasting whites withdeep blues and having painted

furniture, or opt for a more 'beachhut' look with natural wood, bleached cottons and soft blueaccessories," she advises.

"An easy way to adopt this style iswith blue and white bedding as the

shades are ideal to create a calmatmosphere."

BEST BUYS: Club chair in Melittablue stripe, £649. An extra large Taskfloor lamp, in polished nickel-platedsteel, £199, and a Sailing Stripe

bedlinen set, from £39.50.

INDUSTRIAL CHICFunctional furniture, vintage style and astrong neutral palettecombine in theup-and-coming trendfor 'industrial' style, says Claire Hornby, creative stylist forBarker & Stonehouse.

"The industrial chiclook links in nicelywith the recent trendfor period pieces andearly 20th centurystyling, so have funchoosing traditionalitems which willnever date, andbasing your look

shiny chromeandminimalism,the new way to

do this chicstyle is analtogethersubtler andmore sensualexperience. It'sall about rusticand timeless."

GET THELOOK: The lookis achieved bymixing natural
