To those who do not know: there was almost no improv in the city, certainly no improv school. On The Spot Improv performed out of the Comedyworks and McGill improv had a team, I believe. However there were no theatres whose primary focus was improv, comedy and theatre. All that has changed over the past ten years. Theatre Sainte-Catherine was founded, MainLine theatre followed their lead and Montreal Improv completed the indie triumvirate. And now we find ourselves here. Where?

Do not take it for granted though, I know from experience running a theatre is not a lucrative enterprise, it is entirely dependent on the great people that attend and support it endlessly, not just “every once in a while”, the francocommunity's strength is a huge powerhouse too that has supported us time and time again because good theatre is rooted in where it stands: in Québec. Competition creates better work, no big fishes in small ponds, we want a big pond, and though grantbodies have continuously ignored us, I do see a changing of the guard, a new light on the horizon and it is carried by the great communities swirling their shit together and the coffers of Coderre and his unruly gang. A Mega-Hospital? Why not a Mega-Theatre? New subways for the people, but why not a theatre-subway from Des Pins and Saint Laurent, to Sanguinet and Ste-Catherine? The lack of grants for improv is appauling. If Coderre is going to prove he is a benevolent dictator, he should secure the legacy of this city and create a fund for more theatres and bookstores, and less drug-ladened

loud-bass parties. Our improv is the loud bass of our time, as Fannie from Zoofest said “Improv is hot”.

Et bien sûr, on est rien sans le Québec. Le théâtre québécois a également contribué à construire nos « barracks » et nos tranchées sont remplis de fidèles. Vive le théâtre Québécois! On se l’est dit après la pièce de théâtre bilingue #32, on se l’est aussi dit après qu’on ait vu Sugar Sammy ruiner et commercialiser la légitimité du bilinguisme. Qu’est-ce que le futur nous réserve ? Rien, sauf une apocalypse de haine sauf ici, ou on y trouvera l’harmonie. Des bières, des paroles inédites et le général « fuck off ». Une philosophie et une joie de vivre dans les ombres.

Now we must get armed and revolutionary. I mean, like, armed with coffees and revolutionary with our shows. Because it's mainstream to care about the integrity of our fleeting art form which is not limited to the leagues, nor “less than” the national theatre schools. They are antiquated, and we are united and strong. This alliance that was sealed on March 1st at Midnight, in honour of the spring gods of change whom are lurking on the horizon is an alliance branded on the ass of time itself. Inside a beer we float, ready to jump on a stage in the ocean of it all. Thank you Montreal Improv, all shall exalt in the great times ahead. I have loaded the cannons and our boats are ready to engage in the endless naval battle of joy and revelry that improv, art, theatre and other live arts create.

T’es qui toi Marie-Michelle ?

Bonjour, mon nom baptistaire c’est Marie Josée Thérèse Michel Castonguay, pi je suis une femme qui fait pas pire plein d’affaires dans la vie, dont de la scénographie et des trucs artistiques, j’étudie là-dedans aussi t’sais.

Pourquoi le théâtre Ste-Catherine ?

L’an dernier, j’ai vu sur Facebook que Raise the Stakes Theatre, une compagnie en résidence au TSC, cherchait quelqu’un pour faire la scéno pour la Cantatrice Chauve. Fait que c’est ça que j’ai fait. Là, j’ai rencontré les gens du théâtre, qui ont bien vu que j’étais cheap, efficace et willing de travailler pour des peanuts. C’est comme ça que j’ai connu ce théâtre. J’y reviens parce que j’aime travailler avec ce monde-là et j’aime l’espace, pi y’a de la bière.

«Jimmers» et « Jambelette » sont tes créations, tu la puise où ton inspiration ?

Pour ces deux-là, je ne dirais pas que ce sont mes créations, le concept vient d’Alain dans ses textes, tout ce que j’ai fait c’est de les réaliser. À ce moment-là, mon travail devient exclusivement technique et le seul aspect créatif qui me concerne consiste à trouver une façon de construire rapidement et le moins cher possible un objet convenable. Pi ça, c’est mes connaissances des matériaux et mon expérience/talent de bricoleuse-ptenteuse qui me dicte comment je devrais m’y prendre. Ça inclue presque toujours beaucoup de tape.

Pour qui tu rêves de travailler ... à part le Théâtre Ste-Catherine mettons ?

Je veux faire de la direction artistique, ou faire des décors ou des accessoires, sur des films avec une équipe de création inspirante. Je pensais aussi devenir plombière à mon compte.

Quelles sont jusqu’à maintenant les plus gros défis que tu as rencontrés lors d’une création ?

• Transporter des accessoires, morceaux de décors, et outils dans les transports en commun.

• Faire les trucs assez solide pour pas que les acteurs ne les détruisent avant l’ouverture.

• Ne pas trop rire pendant les répétitions.

T’es clairement attachée au côté plutôt simple et « trash » que peut occasionner le théâtre mais t’a aussi un côté perfectionniste vis-à-vis tes créations. Comment tu trouves l’équilibre ?

L’équilibre se fait tout seul, je fais du mieux que je peux avec les contraintes que j’aies. Les deadlines sont inévitable, donc, on fait le show avec ce qu’on a eu les moyens de produire. Révolution ou pas ?

Explique Révolution, parce que un parlement en feu, ça doit être vraiment beau. J’aime ça les belles affaires.

Est-ce que tu es personnellement attachée à tes creations? Ex.: Jimmers?

J’ai cru que oui. J’avais beaucoup d’affection pour Jimmers, mais quand je l’ai vu frencher une actrice sur scène, je me suis sentie un peu trahie. Sérieusement, j’ai toujours une certaine fierté quand je fabrique quelque chose qui a de l’allure, mais une fois que je l’amène au théâtre, je dois m’en détacher parce que ça ne m’appartient plus, ça appartient à l’histoire.

J’ai besoins de 100 aigles qui volent dans mon spectacle. Que fais-tu?

Je capture 100 pigeons, je leur mets des masques d’aigle, ensuite je lance des miettes de pain dans les airs pour qu’ils volent. Après le show, je leur mets des masques de poulet pour les vendre à McDo : ça va rembourser le prix des masques d’aigle, comme ça on va rester dans le budget.

S’il fallait faire une pièce de théâtre dans un cheeseburger, comment tu t’arrangerais ?

Je colle des cheeseburger dans la face du public. Comme ça :

Katie Leggitt has teamed up with Lar Vi to Co-Produce Women in Comedy MTL - joining with Le Nouveau International to present LAFF: Loud & Funny Femmes at TSC on March 21st (8PM).

Oh hey Katie! Where did the inspiration come from to start the Women in Comedy Montreal events and Ladyfest?

I visited NYC in October of last year to perform in the NYC Sketchfest and while I was there I attended a women in comedy panel discussion at the PIT theatre and felt really inspired by the wisdom shared by the panel members. It validated a lot of what I felt too, just in terms of the need to support and inspire each other, and to make sure women are represented accurately in the scene. It was my first trip to New York and it made me realize that Montrealers are just as serious about their craft as those in the Big Apple, only we’re a smaller bunch. There is something awesome about the community of people in MTL and the work we’re doing. We wanted to create opportunities for women in Montreal to perform and feel validated.

Who are some local female comedians to watch and why?

I think Ellie MacDonald is one to watch. She’s got a really distinct voice as far as stand-up goes and she’s bold and I like it. Taking risks on stage is never easy but I think a good comic is someone who stays true to themselves and is unique, and I think Ellie is accomplishing both. I think we’ll see a lot more from improviser D.j. Mausner in the coming months. I’ve seen her perform twice and I can’t get enough. She’s quick, authentic, naturally funny and totally edgy, and I love it.

HUGO PRÉVOSTEAU, vedette de DéPFLIES 7 & 8, Le Dernier Brigadier, Wesley the Muse, producteur de LES IMPROVISATEURS, sketchfest, LIBÉLULLE, MANNISH BOY, était poète-cinéaste en résidence pour les derniers deux ans. Il retourne en Bordeau et on ennuis déjà.

Lundi, le 23 février dernier on a dit aurevoir a un poète.

Il a joué dans 5 pièces de théâtre, des douzaines de Lundis d’impro et les Sketchfest Montréal. Il a produit un pilote, deux films et plusieurs vidéoclips dont un pour RANDOM RECEIPE. Il était souvent enchaîné au bar. Il n’a jamais manqué un show, qu’il soit dedans ou pas, un vrai pilier du théâtre. Un brasseur de rêves, un gicleur qui arose hier et demain avec des promesses qui se produisent et qui se forment. Un homme qui dit des mots qui sont comme des ouragans.

J’aime pas la nostalgie. J’haïs les mots grandioses avec pas de coeur, aucune action. J’aime pas dire des trucs comme : « on va s’ennuyer de ton sourire criss de tabarnak. Il faut seulement laisser de côté ces moments clichés d’émotions de marde pour:

« On se verra à Bordeaux! »
