THE ARCHITECT

Charles Garnier designed the Palais Garnier.

Built from 1861-1875.

WHY WAS IT BUILT?

Designed as part of the reconstruction of Paris during the Second Empire.

This reconstruction was ordered by Emperor Napolean III. Operas were held there.

FUN FACTS

1. Charles Garnier was hired to design and build the Palais Garnier after winning an architectural design competition.

2. Charles Garnier also designed a 7-ton bronze and crystal chandelier. During a performance, one of the counterweights fell and killed an audience member.
