Passe Compose
The passe compose is a compound tense expressing an action or event that is
completed in the past and is made up of two parts: the conjugated present tense
form of either AVOIR or EIRE plus the past participle of the verb.
•Most verbs use AVOIR plus the past participle.EX. Marie a achete la robe bleue I'annee passee.
•Two groups use ETRE plus the past participle.DR & MRS VANDERTRAMP
EX. lis sont alles a Paris hier.REFLEXIVE VERBS
EX. Elles se sont maquillees ce matin.
For the verbs using etre the past participle makes an agreement withDR & MRS VANDERTRAMP
The subject of the verb.REFLEXIVE VERBS
The reflexive pronoun, which reflects back on the subject. These agreements are made if the action of the verb is referring back to thereflexive pronoun (subject).
EX. Elle s'est lavee.Elle s'est lave les mains.
Endings: Masculine Singular -> nothingFeminine singular -» eMasculine plural -> sFeminine plural -> es
Forming questions with the passe compose.Est-ce que questions keep the same order as always.
EX. Est-ce que vous avez joue au golf en ete?N'est-ce pas questions stay the same.
EX. Vous avez joue au golf en ete, n'est-ce pas?Inversion questions invert the pronoun and conjugated verb and thepast participle follows.
EX. Avez-vous joue au golf en ete?
Forming the negative with the passe compose. In the negative the ne ... pas forms the bracket around the conjugatedverb and the past participle follows. The NE drops the E if the next wordstarts with a vowel sound.
EX. Nous n'avons pas etudie pour I'interro hier. The same applies to all the question forms.
EX. Est-ce que vous n'avez pas joue au golf en ete?N'avez-vous pas joue au golf en ete?

PASSE COMPOSE avoir, negatives,etre, inversion
Passe compose with avoir
Up to now, we have looked at the present tense of verbs. That means that we canexpress what is going on at the present moment. What do we do when we want to talkabout the past, what happened last night, what happened two million years ago, whathappened in 1789? (What did happen in 1789?). In English we often say something like:
He has watched the movie.
What have we done? We have taken the verb "to watch", turned it into "watched", makingit what we call a past participle, and used the verb "to have" to help it. In most cases,French does exactly the same thing. We take the verb avoir and add the past participle ofthe verb to it and presto! You have the passe compose, so called because it is composedof two verbs, the auxiliary verb (usually avoir) and the past participle.
Study these examples:
j'ai mangetu as finielle a repondunous avons choisivous avez acheteils ont servi
The big question is:
Well, it's pretty easy to figure from these examples that:
How do you form the past participle?
If the verb is an -re verb, the past participle ends in -u
If the verb is an -er verb, the past participle ends in -e
If the verb is an -ir verb, the past participle ends in -i

Negatives
One thing you might do to make this easier is to recite thepresent tense of the verb avoir In the negative until you can do itreally smoothly and without stumbling. Then add whichever past participle you want.
Irregular verbs
Not so fast! What about the irregular verbs?
Yes, but now I have two verbs. What do I do to make the passecompose negative? Where do I place we... pas...?
No problem! You place ne...pas... around the auxiliary verb.
il a mangeils ont ecoutetu as fininous avons perdu
il n'a pas mangeils n'onf pas ecoutetu n'as pas fininous n'avons pas perdu
AARGHi!!
This isn't too problematic. All you do is remember the past participle, then add it to avoir. Here is the passe compose of the irregular verbs.Learn them by heart!
avoir: j'ai eu, tu as eu, il a eu, elle a eu,
nous avons eu, vous avez eu, ils ont eu, elles ont eu
devoir:j'ai du (watch the accent!), tu as du, il a du, elle a du, etc.
savoir:j'ai su , tu as su, elle a su, etc.
pouvoir:j'ai pu, etc.

Passe compose with Stre
Here's something that will need a little explaining, so pay close attention. Some verbs in French make their passe compose not with avoir but with etre. This mayseem a little strange, but it makes sense when you understand that the past participle isreally an adjective made out of a verb. So, when in French you meet the following:
II est arrive.
this means literally "he is arrived," he is an "arrived" person. We're describing him, in astrange sort of way. What we say in English is, of course, "He has arrived".
Did you know that English used to conjugate some verbs like this? In the English ofShakespeare's day you would find some of these verbs conjugated with the verb "to be"(or not to be). "They are come" was the way they used to say "they have come" in thesixteenth century. Interesting, isn't it? Look at these examples:
The ambassadors from Norway, my good lord,Are joyfully returned. (Hamlet, Act II, sc.2)The actors are come hither, my lord. (Hamlet, Act II, sc.2)
Enough, forsooth! Let's get back to French!
NOW If the past participle is an adjective, and it is put withetre, it must agree, like any adjective in French. If it's feminine, add e, if plural, add 5.
je suis arrive
je suis arrivee
tu es arrive
tu es arrivee
il est arrive
elle est arrivee
nous sommes arrives
nous sommes arrivees
vous etes arrives
vous etes arrivees
ils sont arrives
elles sont arrivees

YOU MEAN / HAVE TO KNOW THIS!? VOL 2 PASSE COUPOSt with etre
You can perhaps understand this better by using the example of another of these verbs, which is mourir (to die). The past participle of this verb is mart, which is the adjective"dead" as well as the participle "died". So when we say:
II est mort.
what we are saying "he is dead", which is the same as saying "he has died". He can't bedead until he has died, can he?
So when we say, Marie est morte.Marie has died. {Marie is dead.)
we have to make the agreement because in each case we are describing the subject orsubjects.
How do I remember which verbs are conjugated like this?
To help us do this, we use a mnemonic - a word or phrase whose letters are the firstletters of each verb:
Les soldats sont marts. The soldiers have died.(The soldiers are dead.)
Les dames sont martes. The ladies have died.(The ladies are dead.)
This is an important idea to remember -the past participle is really an adjective!

YOU MEAN I HAVE TO KNOW THIS!? VOL 2 PASSi COMPOSE Inversion
Questions with inversion
You have probably already learned how to form questions by using inversion. All youhave to do is to invert the subject and verb and you have it!
vous parlez parlez-vous?ils portent partent-ils?
and you remember that when you are using // and e//e forms with the present tense of-cr verbs, allerand avoir you have to remember an extra -t- to help the pronunciation:
il a a-t-il?ellea a-t-elle?
This is important when you invert verbs in the passe compose in order to ask questions:
Let's invert the passe compose of parler:
ai-je parle? (this form is not commonly used) avons-nous parle?as-tu parle?avez-vous parle?a-t-il parle?ont-ils parle?a-t-elle parle?ont-elles parle?a-t-on parle?
To make the questions negative simply place m...pas in the usual place:
n'ai-je pas parle? (this form is not commonly un'as-tu pas parle?n'a-t-il pas parle?n'a-t-elle pas parle?n'a-t-on pas parle?n'avans-nous pas parle?n'avez-vous pas parle?n'ont-ils pas parle?n'ont-elles pas parle?
Similarly, etre verbs can be invented to formquestions. Here are a few examples:
est-elle arrivee? sommes-nous rentres?
sont-ils partis? sont-elles tombees?
To become really proficient with this, you might like to work on just reciting the formsof avoir and etre, trying to say them as fast and as accurately as you can. This way it willbecome really easy. Get someone to give you the pronoun and you supply the answer atfull speed. Race each other!
You might even organize verb-reciting parties on Friday nights, (yeah, right!)
