Definition of Mentoring
A process in which a mentee builds a relationship with a mentor to develop
and enhance her leadership skills personally, professionally and within
Delta.

Program Goals & Outcomes
Mentees create a leadership development action plan that will enable them to develop specific leadership skills
Mentees and mentors develop intentional, purposeful and positive relationships

Selection Committee Roles & Responsibilities
Using guidelines set forth by National Leadership Academy Committee, the participating chapter will:
♦Establish a local LEAD Program Committee to conduct all aspects of the program
♦Recruit eligible mentors from its existing membership
♦Provide updates and other pertinent information back to the National Leadership Academy Committee as required
♦Select mentees through an application process and conduct confirmation interviews if needed
♦Facilitate the matching process of mentors and mentees

Selection Committee Roles & Responsibilities Continued
♦Provide a program orientation session and support materials for mentors and mentees
♦Conduct at least one follow-up evaluation with the mentor and mentee to assess progress
♦Facilitate issue resolution including mediation* and changes in mentor/mentee pairings
♦Evaluate the effectiveness of the program
* The mediation process will be chaired by the president’s designee, which may be a past chapter president or the
selection committee chair.

Selection & Duties of Committee Chair
♦ The Chapter President will appoint the Chair of the LEAD Program Committee.
♦ The Chair of the LEAD Program Committee
♦ Recruits members of committee
♦ Has major responsibility for carrying out programs, directives, interests and agendas as prescribed by Leadership Academy LEAD program.
♦ Receives all nominations.

Mentor Selection Criteria
A mentor acts as a guide to help the mentee successfully understand, define, and pursue her own goals. Together, they form a partnership that focuses on developing the mentee’s skills, abilities, and knowledge. A mentor must be financial and actively participate with a local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Mentors should have:
• At least 5 years experience in their chosen field• Prior experience with mentoring or career development
guidance• Minimum of 3 year membership in Delta• Served as an elected officer, committee chair, or other
leadership role in the chapter• Attended a national or regional conference during the past 3
years

• Partner with, develop, guide and support the mentee based on her developmental needs
• Possess a solid knowledge base of the Sorority
• Develop mutual trust and respect
• Maintain confidentiality
• Help the mentee develop into a future leader and realize her potential
• Serve as advocate for mentee whenever an opportunity presents itself
• Act as sounding board for ideas/concerns
• Provide insights into possible opportunities
• Identify resources to help mentee enhance personal, professional and Delta development
• Expand the mentee's network of contacts
• Address questions or issues that the mentee might have

Mentee Selection Criteria
A mentee has a strong desire to work on her development and growth. She has a sincere interest in partnering with a mentor to enhance her personal, professional, and Delta leadership skills. A mentee must be financial and actively participate with a local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Mentees should have:• Active membership in local chapter• A reference from a Delta leader in the current
chapter

Mentee Roles and Responsibilities
• Identify the skills, knowledge, and/or goals that you want to achieve and communicate these to the mentor
• Work with the mentor to establish goals, developmental activities and time frames
• Maintain a mentoring development plan
• Initiate meetings and other interactions
• Build and maintain a successful relationship with the mentor
• Exhibit open and honest communication with the mentor
• Build trust with the mentor
• Maintain confidentiality
• Be open to feedback
• Listen non-defensively, expecting and accepting open and constructive ideas for change

MENTOR APPLICATIONA Mentor is an experienced Soror who acts as a guide to help a Mentee successfully understand, define and pursue her own goals. Together, they form a partnership that focuses on developing the mentee’s skills, abilities, and knowledge. A mentor must be financial and actively participate with a local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
