That’s a lot of people. Houston is ranked under New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. When most of us hear the names of those listed cities, we may not im- mediately make a connection with these sizeable cities and Houston. But Houston is actually a big com- petitor and this city, our area, has a lot going on. This past weekend, a good por- tion of those 2 million Houstonians flocked to our area of the Heights to celebrate a night of culture, possibil- ity, and to revel with fellow Housto- nians and friends — in being a Hous- tonian. The event was a sight to see. With live music playing in the middle of streets, art on every block and a general census of a laid back atmo- sphere. Among the Saturday ambiance was an opening event for a yoga stu- dio on 19th street, YogaOne Heights. The YogaOne studio is one of five in the Houston area and is co-owned and directed by Dana Sweet — along side with Albina and Roger Rippy, the founders and owners of YogaOne Studios. So what does the fourth largest city in the U.S, White Linen Night, and a new yoga studio in the heights have to do with each other? The con- nection here is simple — achieving personal health, wellness and bal- ance and, also, within a community. We take several hours of our day to take part in the infamous Houston phrase to “be someone.” But some get so caught up in the business and professional aspect of this phrase that we forget the health aspect that these words tell. This is something Dana Sweet knows a thing or two about and has studied for over 10 years. She is your neighbor. And she has a few words I’d like to share with you to consider. The following is a portion of my in- terview with Co-Owner and Director of YogaOne Heights, Dana Sweet, at her opening event for YogaOne Sat- urday evening at White Linen Night. Question: What would you want Leader readers to know about your studio and your goals here at Yoga- One? What do you have to offer for a healthy environment? Answer: “I think everyone is inter- ested in creating a healthy, balanced and happy lifestyle for themselves and those are the kind of experiences and types of questions we are most interested in at YogaOne. So we are committed to creating an environ- In today’s fast-paced environment, finding a good balance in your child’s diet, sleep schedule and playtime requires more effort than ever. But there’s good news from the health and nutrition experts at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital. “The old, confusing USDA food pyramid has been replaced with a new online tool for parents who want to know more about healthy eat- ing for kids of all ages,” said Karen Manners, RD, LD, a clinical dietitian at Memorial Hermann Northwest. “On choosemyplate.gov you’ll find a visual explanation of a good diet — half fruits and vegetables and half grains and protein. Parents can type in their child’s age, gender and activ- ity level to create an individualized food plan. The site also has a link for kids with interactive games, activity sheets, videos and songs that teach them about nutrition.” Manners stressed the importance of a healthy breakfast. “Next to sleep and exercise, breakfast is the best way for kids to recharge their batter- ies,” she said. “Eating breakfast with- in an hour after they get up gives kids the staying power they need to get a good start on the day. Studies have shown that eating a good breakfast leads to higher school attendance, less tardiness, fewer hunger-induced stomachaches and higher test scores. Kids concentrate better and have better muscle coordination. Break- fast is like filling up the gas tank.” She also encouraged parents to stay involved in their children’s food choices. “It’s important for parents to go over school lunch menus with their kids and steer them toward healthy choices,” she said. “Take your kids grocery shopping and help them choose nutrient-rich foods for their lunches or afterschool snacks. When children are involved in plan- ning meals and snacks, they’re more likely to eat what we provide. It’s also important to have regular fam- ily meals. Research has shown that families that eat together are health- ier, maintain a healthier weight and have a closer bond that comes from sharing the events of the day. Eating meals together allows us to be role models for our children in a support- ive and encouraging way that pro- motes healthy eating.” The same thing goes for sleep hy- giene. “Good sleep hygiene starts at an early age with a regular bedtime,” said Naureen Ameduddin Brink, D.O., a family practitioner with Me- morial Hermann Medical Group in The Heights. “Kids ages 3 to 6 need 10 to 12 hours of sleep a day. Typi- cally, that means a bedtime of be- tween 7 and 9 p.m. Younger children take naps at school, but naptime generally ends in the first grade, so it’s especially important that kids in this age group get enough sleep at home. This is a time when they’re learning the fundamentals — math, reading and writing — that will lead to later success.” In the preteen years between ages 7 and 12, Dr. Brink recommends the same sleep schedule — 10 to 12 hours a night. “By the time kids are A Parent’s Guide to Back to School Eat, Sleep, Play Karen Manners, RD, LD Naureen Ameduddin Brink, D.O. Not too long before that, a new virus, the Chikungunya, was introduced that most aren’t exactly welcoming with open arms. The WNV has been reported in the area, but most recently the virus has been linked in The Woodlands with an aggressive mosquito, The Asian Tiger. Unlike the everyday mosquito that prefers biting birds, The Asian Ti- ger will bite just about anything. The Asian Tiger is known to carry WNV and about four other viruses. This aggressive mosquito has distinct fea- tures of white stripes across a black body. Another report is the virus Chikun- gunya — this name is derived from a Tanzanian language that means “to become contorted.” The virus is mos- quito borne that initiates with fever and then progresses to detrimental joint pain. Patients usually recover fully, but is common for joint pain to linger for a few months or, in some cases, years. With these new mosquitos and new viruses popping up — what does this mean for our area with the peak of the mosquito season here? The Mosquito Control Division of Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services is under new leadership with Dr. Mustapha Debboun serving as Director of the mosquito division. Dr. Debboun refer- enced about 692 mosquitos with the confirmed West Nile Virus out of over roughly 500,000 pulls from mosquito traps. “The mosquito division has found the West Nile Virus in recent trap pulls and collected birds,” Dr. Debboun continues, “There is noth- ing to be alarmed about with these numbers. We are out there working from Sunday evening to Saturday morning to keep things safe and these numbers are only confirmed in mos- quitos and birds, not people.” Dr. Debboun encourages an active lifestyle and being outside and urges the appropriate precautions with mosquito repellent. Along with ap- propriate precautions, Dr. Debboun also has another message for the community. “We need help from the commu- nity,” Debboun said. “The community can help by emptying buckets, tires, anything that holds water. Empty containers so mosquitos don’t have a place to breed. If you take care of your backyard, but your neighbors don’t, mosquitos will still fly over. So we need everyone to get involved.” For information on how to protect yourself, visit http://www.hcphes. org/hcmosquitoctrl/factsheets.htm. I would like to take the time to introduce myself to you. My name is Dr. Esther Kovacs and I recently purchased the practice from Dr. Deb-orah Thomas. I am a graduate of the University of Houston’s College of Optometry where I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Thomas as she was my attending doctor in clinic. Since graduating over 7 years ago, I have had the opportunity to see a wide range of ocular diseases and co-management of pre and post-op cataract and Lasik patients. The practice has gone through a few changes, but you will still see the great staff that has served you in the past. I look forward to meeting you and continuing your care at Today’s Vision Oak Forest.

10, parents tend to push bed-times back to accommodate homework and social activi-ties,” she said. “For teens ages 13 to 18, we like to see 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night to pre-pare them for an active school day.”

As for exercise, the Cen-ters for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Association of Pediatrics both recommend 60 minutes of aerobic activity for kids each day. “Most public schools don’t have PE every day, so parents do need to take on the extra responsibility of ensuring that their kids get an hour’s worth of active play every day, doing whatever they enjoy,” Dr. Brink said. “Exercise helps with qual-ity of sleep, body weight, self-esteem, social skills, hand-eye coordination, health — the list of benefits goes on and on.”

ment for people to get some quiet with themselves. To dive deep into their body and the physical yoga experience. Also, to see what it’s like to be in a meditation — all of that, in a community setting. So they are on the mat, next to people that probably have kids in the same school. Or maybe they’re on the same road, driving to the same job, but they never really get the chance to connect. So by creating this environment and the commitment to these kinds of ideals, we get to cre-ate a space for people to come

together, as a community, and who are experiencing different levels of transformation in the same space.”

Question: What do you tell people that don’t usually choose yoga for that break-away, that outlet from the hus-tle and bustle?

Answer: “I usually use my own life as an example experi-ence. My background is an at-torney in the energy industry and I’ve practiced yoga for 10 years. It helped me get through law school. It helped me be a single mom. It really enabled

me to maintain a sense of har-mony and a sense of balance. It helped me with challenges as a parent, and as a woman working as an attorney. I could be in a space, or in a challeng-ing work environment, with a lot of stress and choose from moment to moment — be-cause I have a yoga practice. Because I have a breath prac-tice. I choose how I want to show up in that environment. So rather than the stress over-coming me and being reactive, because I have this practice — I am learning, all the time, how

to be more responsive rather than reactive. That is how it affects me in my personal life. That’s how it shows up. It’s like you said, it all sounds really good, but what does that really look like?”

Question: You have the readers reading, what do you want to tell them?

Answer: “Come and check us out. Come and have some fun with us. Consider that there is something here for you that you might not be aware of and come find out what that might be.”

Chiropractic care aims to benefit its patients beyond pain relief. It is about improving the quality of your life through un-derstanding and taking care of your body. In Line Chiroprac-tic Care offers services with an emphasis on natural well-ness to help patients to feel younger, with a renewed en-ergy. Chiropractic massage has a multitude of beneficial ef-fects on the body and mind. It is also a great method for improving musculoskeletal ef-ficiency.

There are many benefits one can gain from receiving consistent manual massage therapy. Maintaining a com-prehensive approach to health that includes massage therapy as well as nutrition, exer-cise, and regular chiropractic care assists in preventing the body and mind from disease. In addition, maintaining this regimen everyday will pro-vide higher relief from stress, minimization of pain, and help keep your body in top form.

Cold Laser Therapy is an excellent treatment that al-lows the body to naturally heal itself by utilizing a combi-nation of electric stimulation and cold laser technology. In addition to simple back and neck pain, cold laser therapy has been utilized for a number of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis and sprains, as well as car-pal tunnel syndrome, wound management, and more. In addition to chiropractic mas-sage and Cold Laser Therapy, In Line Chiropractic Care also offers therapeutic exercise, ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, cryotherapy, as-sistance with workers com-pensation, personal injuries, injuries resulting from car ac-cidents, and aquatic therapy.

Improving quality of life by taking care of your body

Pilates is an overall body fitness system that effectively addresses a pregnant woman’s muscle imbalances. Pilates fully integrates the body so ef-fectively that many of its exer-cises carry over to movements needed in daily life. This helps pregnant women better man-age spine pain and keep an old injury from flaring up.

Just about any pregnant woman can benefit from a good pilates routine with modifica-tions based on her individual needs. Release in the relaxin hormone, causing laxity in all ligaments, is a big change that happens during pregnancy. This compromises the stability of the spine and pelvis. The

excessive movement associat-ed with this change can lead to pain and inflammation in the lumbar spine and pelvis. Liga-mentous laxity increases the chance that the pelvis shifts out of alignment. The stabilization that a rehabilitative pilates pro-gram provides can keep the pelvis from constantly getting out of alignment during preg-nancy. Body fluid retention must be managed to improve comfort. The increase in the relaxin hormone during preg-nancy also contributes to fluid retention.

Pilates can train a pregnant woman to brace the spine while moving her arms and legs. People with back pain do not

effectively recruit the transver-sus abdominus and multifidi muscles, which are imperative to stabilizing the spine. The emphasis on stabilizing the t-muscles that surround the spine helps prevent a diastasis rectus abdominus in the third trimester of pregnancy and the post partum period. If a pregnant woman already has a diastasis rectus abdominus, the pilates approach can help train her to control the separation to manage this dysfunction.

Neck pain is another com-mon problem during pregnan-cy as the breasts enlarge and create more muscle imbalance between the pectorals and scapular stabilizers. Pilates fo-

cuses on engaging the scapular stabilizers. Pilates focuses on engaging the scapular stabiliz-ers while relaxing the upper trapezius that often spasm from overuse.

The focus on breath is an-other benefit of Pilates dur-ing pregnancy. Women are more likely to become short of breath during the third trimes-ter as the fetus grows. Being mindful of inhaling and exhal-ing slowly and deeply using di-aphragmatic breathing during all pilates exercises heightens the benefit while improving lung capacity.

THE OBITUARIES.Lucille R. Coons, 93, born April 25, 1921, died Aug. 2.

Margaret M. Ciatto, 69, born June 27, 1945 in Leigh, England, died July 28.

Lillian “Connie” Fulgham, 100, born June 27, 1914 in Bremond, TX, died July 25.

Elsie Danette ‘Dani’ Jackson, 78, born July 14, 1936 Houston, died July 29.

Ernest A Knipp Jr., 84, born Oct. 10, 1929 in Houston, died July 26 Minnie Charlene Marberry, 89, born July 13, 1925, died Aug. 3.

Joe Grant McCourt, 67, born Nov. 17, 1946, died Aug. 2, after a two year courageous battle with cancer.

A 50th wedding anniversary party was given by Linda Dimic-eli, Christine Kleihege and Paul Kleihege for their parents, Arnold and Earleen Kleihege, residents of Oak Forest for 21 years. They celebrated July 19, which worked better for everyone, even though their actual anniversary is in January. Lots of walking down memory lane with picture albums and paraphernalia from the early 60s. Eighty friends and family gathered at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Jo Marie Crim, a guest, was a longtime friend that had double dated with them when they were still single. A barbecue dinner was served, along with an anniversary cake with gold roses.

John and Linda Roffall, lifelong Oak Forest residents, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on July 12th with a party thrown by their children at Tin Hall out in Cypress, TX. Family and friends, new and old, came from far and wide to celebrate this sweet couple. Son Michael, his wife Rachel and their children Grace, Sophie and Justin, and daughter Theresa Carpenter, her husband Tim, and Theresa’s chil-dren Travis and Taylor Dugey, as well as many other relatives and friends including Mary and Andy Reyna, Andy and Amy Reyna, Jr., Amy Reyna Ybarra, Ana Reyna, Aaron Reyna, Bobbie Harville, Judy and Paul Virgadamo, Stuart and Linda Peters, Ray and Becky Corty, Emily Abernethy, Bette

Allen Weirich, Rosie and Chris White, Barlow and Lucy Simmons, Mike and Betty Heffler, and Cecil and Susan Tamez among them. Enjoying a delicious bbq dinner and dancing were the order of the evening as old friendships were renewed and everyone toasted Johnny and Linda with love and appreciation.

Pam and Roy Dean Leighton report exciting news: their son, Jacob Leighton, graduated in December, was commissioned into the Navy at graduation as an Ensign, moved to Pensacola, FL, in February, and began Officer Flight School. On top of that, he and his wife, Kara Collins, are expecting their first child in February 2015.

Garden Oaks resident Jacob Anderson is heading off to Texas State University in San Marcos in a few weeks. Congratulations, Jacob!

Neighbors: Celebrating love, graduation in summertime

By Elizabeth [email protected]

Is the heat beginning to get to you? Are you daydreaming about the crisp, fall days ahead? Well, make the most of summer while you still can and clear your calendar on Saturday, Au-gust 16. “Why,” you ask? Well, that’s the date of the 2nd annual Oak Forest Homeowner’s Association’s “Dog (and Cat!) Days of Summer” event at Oak Forest Park (2100 Judiway) from 9 a.m. until noon.

This huge event benefits the Oak Forest Ani-mal Advocates, which is a newly-formed animal rescue group in Oak Forest, doing incredible work to help animals in need every day. In ad-dition to a 1 mile doggie fun run, (that begins at 8 a.m.) a silent auction with a multitude of drool-worthy items, tons of fetching--some of them literally--adoptable dogs and cats and the chance to get your pet microchipped, you’ll have more fun than you can shake a rawhide bone at! Find out more on the event’s Facebook page: OFHA’s 2nd Annual Dog and (Cat!) Days of Summer.

Summer lovin’If it seems as though the summer is lingering

and you’re finding yourself bored and lonely, it’s not too late to consider adopting a companion animal. This time of the year, many shelters offer sales and specials on their adoption fees, making adopting that much easier. Shelter pets typically go to their new home already spayed or neutered, microchipped and up to date on their vaccinations. If you’ve priced all of these services a la carte at your vet’s office lately, you’ll appreciate what a steal a shelter pet is.

Snap to it!By now, you certainly must know how I feel

about spaying and neutering your pets. What’s the hold up? SNAP (Spay Neuter Assistance Program) offers low-cost wellness care as well

as spay/neuters and also operates a free mobile spay/neuter clinic for eligible residents. You’re running out of excuses not to do this! SNAP has a “brick and mortar” clinic at 1801 Durham Dr. (713-862-8001) where you can make an ap-pointment to have your pet spayed or neutered or walk-in for wellness care (vaccinations, rou-tine tests, flea prevention, etc). SNAP also op-erates a mobile spay/neuter clinic that is open to income-qualified families. Please visit www.snapus.org to take advantage of this invaluable program.

The dog days of summer got ya down?

Don’t call her “Crazy Eyes” to her face, but sweet Marie is part of the new “Orange is the new ADOPTED!” promotion at Friends For Life. This 7 year old pittie-mix can be your special dandelion for only $25! Marie is sweet, docile and loves to be loved--a sharp contrast from her former life, as a bait dog. Marie loves people but would do better as an only dog. Learn more about Marie at: www.adoptfriendsforlife.org.
