11 . UNDERSTANDING ACCOUNTABIL ITY 6 minutes

Synopsis

Serena has come in from Head Office and is appalled by the lack of accountability in the regional office. She leaves Marcus with the challenge that his entire office must become accountable. Marcus passes the task of remedying the situation to Carol, who panics and calls a snap meeting with the entire team (including Carlos, the cleaner). She canvasses the team for their collective understanding of what accountability is, only to find a lot of confusion. She confesses privately that she was not sure of the exact meaning of accountability, but is saved by the new guy, Sam, who provides a clear and unequivocal definition.

ACTIVITY 1: ASSIGN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITY In a large group discuss the main roles and functions of the team, and then determine who is accountable for final results. Create a table matrix with columns to work through this methodically.

• You may wish to break down one major function into tasks and then drill

down to individual responsibilities

• What if something goes wrong? Test your allocated responsibilities by

creating problem scenarios and disasters and work back to see who

is/should be accountable. Are there levels of responsibility?

ACTIVITY 2: STRATEGIES TO BECOME ACCOUNTABLE

In small groups, focus on the best ways to develop stronger accountability in the team and more empowerment for everyone.

• What would be most helpful to you to become more accountable?

• How can we share accountability?

• How do we monitor accountability?

• How do we manage accountability when new people join the team or

someone continually makes mistakes?

• How do we deal with people who don’t care and have a poor work ethic?
