Soroptimist International held their 23rd annual “Women of Distinction” recog-

nition celebration. Recognition is given in four categories; “Business Profes-

sional”, Civic Professional”, “Volunteer”, and “Rising Star” women ages 17 – 21

the future of all our communities.

Congratulations to Gina Golino ( class 22) as the recipient of the Soroptimist

Women of Distinction Award in the volunteer category. Gino is the Marketing

Director of Forward Electric and Air Conditioning, Inc. The name, Soroptimist,

means “best for women,” and that’s what the organization strives to achieve.

Soroptimists are women at their best working to help other women to be their

best. Some of our LEADERship alumni past recipients are: Barbara Kauffman,

Donna Linton, Kathy Derringer, Jeanette Mueller, Maria Wells, Sue Whittington,

Kelly Bond Pellietier, Stacy Ranieri, Margaret Richebourg, Bridget Barratta,

Debra Duvall, Marjie Jordan, Elmira Gainey and Gayle Harrell.

On March 24, 2015, Jolynn Whitten (class 23) Executive Director of Sandhill Cove was able to hire students

while participating in the “Steps for Success”, career day at the Pine School in Hobe Sound, Florida. This

program was sponsored by HR Martin County, an affiliate of SHRM. Over 60 students from Martin Youth

LEADERship attended from South Fork, Jensen Beach, and Martin County High Schools, as well as the Pine

School. The students attended several breakout sessions on Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills, and Social

Media. They came prepared with their resumes when speaking to us about job opportunities with Sandhill

Cove. A total of twelve students were hired by the participating businesses.

Pictured is Johnathan Sheridan, Dining Operations Manager, interview-

ing one of the students Johnathan had this to say about his experience:

“Participating in the “Steps for Success” mock job fair for the Youth

LEADERship of Martin County was a wonderful experience. The stu-

dents in attendance were all professional minded individuals with

impressive resumes for people of their age bracket. They were all very

receptive to learning about Sandhill Cove, and what a Continuing Care

Retirement Community offers to Senior Citizens of our area. The most

rewarding part of the experience was meeting young people with a clear

goal of who they want to be in the future. Many students spoke of aspirations majoring in hospitality, business,

and health administration. One student who plans on pursuing hospitality will be joining us in a few short

weeks. She is excited to learn about hospitality programs in retirement communities, as it is an ever growing part

of the hospitality industry. I hope to continue see more of these young professionals applying with the Food &

Beverage Department as we near the summer months”.

Lt. Stephen Mochen, LEADERship Alumni class 12, was the School Resource Officer at Martin

County High School for 21 years. Project Graduation began as the brainchild of Mochen who says

” Project Graduation is a proven program to keep teens from drinking and partying the night of

their high school graduation”. After each high school’s graduation ceremony graduating seniors

started going to their high school to party with supervised activities. Now the “locked down” event

is held at the YMCA Sportsworld for each high school after their graduation where they remain

until 4 a.m. the next morning. They enjoy a night with their classmates, catered meals, a D.J.,

skating, an activity zone and the chance to win one of the many prized donated by community

sponsors. Each year, nearly 75 percent of the graduating class from each participating school at-

tends their respective events. Students feel there is no other setting where their entire senior class

can get together to just enjoy the last part of high school. The Project Graduation Foundation is a

board of volunteers made up of many who are alumni, such as Cindy LaConte who has served for six

years in many leadership roles. They have worked quietly year-round to ensure one night of safety

for our graduating teens for nearly 20 years.
