2013: A Pathway to success This following year-end report highlights New Heights’ key accomplishments in 2013, as well as looks to the future as we continue the process of building an organization that serves deserving youth throughout our community.
In the following pages you will see the results of the hard work put forth by our student-athletes and their families both on and o the court. You will also read about the tireless eorts of our amazing team of board members, full time sta, basketball coaches, tutors and volunteers.
At New Heights, the desired outcome for everyone’s collective eorts is for all of our kids to graduate from high school and college and build a foundation for a personally and professionally successful adult life. In a city that graduates roughly only half of its high school students, New Heights graduated 100% of our seniors this year, a rate we have maintained since 2005. New Heights is a home that allows young people to reap the numerous benefits of participation in organized basketball and aims to eliminate the negative influences and behaviors that frequently accompany youth basketball. At New Heights, the basketball court is a “classroom” in which we encourage our participants to develop and apply leadership skills by challenging them to resolve interpersonal con-flicts among teammates; demonstrate teamwork and dedication in training and compe-tition; and display respect towards others. Most importantly, New Heights provides stu-dent-athletes direct access to academic and life skill resources rarely available to families in this socioeconomic demographic.
In 2013, New Heights’ eighth anniversary, we enhanced our program services and are continuing to identify new ways to educate and empower inner-city youth to be leaders, champions, and student athletes. To do this, we need your help. Whether volunteering as a tutor or coach, sponsoring a team, or cheering on our student-athletes in competition, we will only grow and expand the New Heights’ mission with your continued support.
Thank you for joining us to positively impact the lives of hundreds of promising NYC student-athletes.
With our deep appreciation and warmest wishes,
Ted Smith Executive Director
Mark Patricof Board Chairman

Beyond Sport is “a global organization that promotes, develops and supports the use of sport to create positive social change across the world.” Janelle was chosen based on the impact that sports has had on her life and her desire to help youth around the world through sports. While playing with New Heights, Janelle was a member of the 2007 AAU National Championship 14U team. Janelle is currently a Public Health Major at the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics at Syracuse University.

PROFILES OF SUCCESSNaasir Williams Class of 2013
LONG JOURNEY FROM HARLEM TO VERMONTNaasir Williams embodies the spirit of New Heights. He is a leader, champion and student-athlete on the basketball court and in the classroom. Naasir, known as NaNa, grew up in Harlem and, with the support of New Heights’ High School Assist program, chose to attend Rice High School in his neighborhood. Unfortunately, Rice was forced to close due to financial diculties, but New Heights was able to assist him and his family to enroll at another parochial school, Cardinal Hayes in the Bronx. Within his first week at Cardinal Hayes, he was selected by the administration to be a member of the senior council, an exclusive leadership position. At Hayes, Naasir excelled, maintaining a 90 GPA and being named a co-captain of the team. After graduating from Hayes at 17, he received a full-financial aid package to attend the Millbrook School, an elite college preparatory school. With continued support from the College Assist program, Naasir graduated from Millbrook in 2013 and is currently attending the University of Vermont in Burlington with a generous financial aid package. He is also a member of the basketball team.
