About USB

The world, and the way in which we live and work, can change in an instant. It can turn the familiar into something frightening; it can also create enormous opportunities.

What are the skills we need to navigate our way through the uncertainty, trust deficits and rapid change? How do we rebuild economies and rethink our businesses?

According to the World Economic Forum, adaptability is one of the key competencies we need right now. When we are adaptable, we can use new learning to challenge our thinking and change our behaviour; we can reinvent ourselves and our environments.

USB’s internationally accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership Development is particularly suited to help you unlock the skills you need to show up as a leader. You will, among others, develop your leadership competencies, learn to get people to work together to enhance performance, see the bigger picture and make strategy “come alive through people”.

USB’s areas of expertise include business management, development finance, futures studies, management coaching, leadership development, project management and financial planning. All of USB’s programmes benefit from these areas of expertise in one way or another. It also creates ample opportunities for continued growth.

If you want your learning to be transformative and your leadership journey to bring both personal and professional growth, this programme will serve you well.

Now is not the time to stop learning.

“From a business school perspective, social

development in South Africa happens through empowering

students to understand their role as responsible leaders

when they go back into society.”

If you enrol for the PGDip in Leadership Development at USB you will embark on a learning pathway of responsible leadership development. During this journey you will expand your awareness about yourself, others and the world in which you live and work. You will grow your courage and competence to lead ethically, with responsibility and sustainability guiding your decisions and actions. Your imagination will most certainly be stretched about what it means for you to make a difference and be an agent of change in the world.

This programme is thoroughly informed by research-based and internationally accepted knowledge frameworks of what makes for good and effective leadership. From this perspective we focus on the development of the leader as person, the leader in relationship with others, the leader’s ability to develop a high-performing organisation, and, ultimately, the leader’s influence and impact on society. All of these focal areas are embedded in a learning approach in which you are capacitated for deep learning. The overall aim is to develop you in such a way that you become confident and skilful to develop others as well.

While the classroom is our safe space for new discoveries about self, it is at the same time our theatre of imagination for a better world. At USB we are committed to the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Therefore you will learn how this global agenda is relevant for how we live and lead individually and collectively, and how to apply it in business and society. Among fellow students from private, public and social sector organisations you will practically experience why we subscribe to a stakeholder inclusive and collaborative approach to dealing with the challenges of our time.

This programme is internationally accredited by the AACSB (USA) and EQUIS (Europe). In 2019, the French rating agency Eduniversal included it on its list of top-ranked leadership programmes in the world. We are pleased about this external verification. This is due to, among others, the unique blend of leadership theory and practice that the programme offers, the practical value of the assignments, and the quality of assessment feedback to students.

We live in a world in need of leaders who live their values confidently, who skilfully harness the capabilities of others and who are committed to creating value for a better world. If this is your dream for yourself and the right time to invest in a transformative leadership learning journey, then this programme is for you.

About the PGDip in Leadership Development About the PGDip in Leadership Development

This one-year programme (both the generalist and NPO streams) combines on-campus classes with blended learning sessions, allowing you to study while you work. This also enables you to start applying your newly acquired skills in your workplace right from the start while receiving comprehensive support throughout your studies.

The on-campus block at the start of the programme enables you to physically meet your lecturers and fellow classmates first, allowing for a more immersive experience of the entire year. The on-campus block at the end of programme helps to ensure an integrative experience.

The blended learning sessions allow you to join the class via any internet-linked smart phone, laptop or device. USB’s high-tech class rooms allow the lecturers to see, in real time, the faces of all the online students portrayed onto a screen or class room wall. This virtual environment enables you to actively participate in classroom discussions – whether you are logging in from an airport in Europe, a boardroom in Africa or your office at home.

This format means minimum time away from work. It also lowers the opportunity cost to do this programme at USB as it reduces travel costs. Also see usb.ac.za/blended-learning/.

You may know how to manage well. However, to take the next step in your career and to grow your influence, you need to hone your leadership skills. This calls for a journey of personal development.

Research confirms that it is leadership that makes a difference in organisational performance. USB’s Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership Development is based on this growing body of research. The programme acknowledges responsible leadership as the prime differentiator that drives sustainable high performance. Using the framework of Me, We, Work and World, it focuses on the development of personal leadership, team leadership, organisational leadership and societal leadership to strengthen and deepen the working professional’s capability to grow as leader.

In the PGDip in Leadership Development for generalists we use multidisciplinary assessment techniques and processes which include peer group interaction, role-plays, feedback and peer coaching, personal reflection, action learning, and work-based applications where you apply your learning within your own areas of influence. Support ranges from tutoring to support from fellow students. You also get the opportunity to use personal, work and life environments as extended places of learning, and to develop your personal leadership authenticity and strengths as the primary source for interpersonal, organisational and societal influence.

This generalist programme is relevant for Africa and beyond. You can apply your leadership skills in any industry, anywhere in the world. This programme is internationally benchmarked. Yet, it is particularly relevant to African managers and leaders as it takes into account the diversity, traditions and multicultural environments of South Africa and the African continent.

You may know management well. But can you lead?

PGDip in Leadership Development for generalists

“Responsible leadersknow how to work with

over followers.”- Prof Arnold Smit

Head: Postgraduate Diploma inLeadership Development

What you will gain fromthis qualification?

PGDip in Leadership Development for generalists

Develop your leadership competencies

One of the most underutilised resources available to organisations and society is the unfulfilled leadership potential of managers and specialists. Research shows that most people can enhance their leadership impact significantly through a medium-term process of personal leadership development. This is what this programme does – it develops you as a responsible leader who can lead with confidence. You will be encouraged to discover and develop your personal leadership style, enabling you to lead in the way that is authentic and true to you.

Make an impact in your organisation

Research confirms that leadership development can have a practical and discernible impact on an organisation’s economic performance, brand, employee engagement and morale, and its capacity to attract and retain talent. Most people “slide into leadership” rather than consciously develop leadership competencies. With leadership skills, you can rapidly enhance the performance of individuals, teams and the organisation, and align the organisation to contribute to society.

Enhance performance

This programme acknowledges leadership as the prime differentiator that drives sustainable high performance. Also, it is the presence of clear leadership competencies that separates average from superior performance. The leadership competencies you acquire through this programme will help you to optimise the potential and contributions of people at every level and to support transformation in organisations.

Grow your influence

Excellent leaders exercise influence with intent and in ways that enhance the sustainable performance of all stakeholders. This programme will enable you to reveal and build your capacity to exercise influence in your personal authentic manner.

Cope in complex environments

South Africa and most other African countries are building democratic and market-based economic dispensations. This qualification will help you acquire the shifts in leadership values and practices you need to cope with the demands of highly competitive, globalised and multicultural environments.

See the bigger picture

This programme will help you make connections on various levels. You will learn to leverage leadership-followership dynamics to build stronger teams. You will also gain clarity on your key role in driving strategy execution (i.e. making strategy “come alive through people”) and societal transformation.

Learning philosophy

“It is a daily choice to show up as a leader. This requires a level of

consciousness, courage, discipline and strong values.”

The content of this programme is rooted in academic research and internationally benchmarked theory and practices. The main objective is to encourage students to combine academic rigour and experiential learning which is applied within the larger framework of internationally benchmarked action and work-based learning. The learning philosophy of this programme is based on the following:

• Integrating theory and practice: This qualification provides students with both the theoretical and practical underpinning of sustainable high-performance leadership. The theoretical part of the course is delivered through an in class programme of lectures, case studies, tu¬torials and assignments, while the practical part mainly consists of syndicate groups, peer-based interaction and feedback, and workplace application.

• Finding an authentic personal leadership style: Students are encouraged to discover the approaches and frameworks that work best for them in order to develop their personal and authentic framework, approach and style of leadership.

• International application with local specialisation: The programme adheres to international best practice while emphasising leadership development in a uniquely African context. It is particularly relevant to South African managers and leaders, as it takes into account the diversity, traditions and multicultural environments of this country and the greater African continent.

• Adult learning practices: The focus of this programme is not “learning about leadership”. Neither is this traditional education that relies on tests, exams and case studies unrelated to the student’s own context and challenges. Instead, this programme uses adult learning practices (andragogy) such as action learning and peer-based learning (collaborative learning where you learn through the experiences of fellow-students) to help students make the most of their learning journey. The programme also gives students the opportunity to use personal, work and life environments as extended places of learning, and to develop their personal leadership authenticity and strengths as the primary source for interpersonal, organisational and societal influence.

• Extensive support: Students receive comprehensive support throughout the programme. Students are also divided into smaller syndicate groups, referred to as leadership councils, for additional support during the year.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme, successful students will:

• Understand and be able to apply high-performance leadership across the four dimensions of Me (personal leadership), We (interpersonal or team leadership), Work (organisational leadership) and World (societal leadership)

• Understand personal leadership styles, perspectives and preferences, and use this knowledge to identify personal strengths and developmental needs

• Understand and work with the dynamics of leadership in teams and at an interpersonal level to optimise team and/or interpersonal leadership

• Understand how aspects of organisational leadership and development impact sustainable performance, and assess the status of organisations against internationally benchmarked best practices: practising strategy execution; utilising structures to create challenging work and drive performance through hierarchy; entrenching the business disciplines of leveraging information and performance management to drive performance and people commitment; aligning the interests of diverse stakeholders; and turning transformational leadership into a core competence

• Drive transformation through responsible leadership and values that entrench flourishing practices as the primary source of well-being and success across all four dimensions (Me, We, Work, World)

• Assess the role of the organisation in the broader society in areas of governance, sustainable development, private-public partnerships, and contribution to societal transformation.

Who should enrol?

• People in both the private and public sector who are advancing into middle, senior and general managerial levels requiring increasing levels of leadership

• Working professionals in specialist positions who have a minimum of seven years of working experience and who want to prepare themselves for managerial and leadership roles

• Professionals with degrees in fields such as engineering, medical sciences, education, law and accounting who are progressing into managerial roles

• Those who want to broaden their leadership competencies without doing a comprehensive management degree like an MBA

PGDip in Leadership Development for NPOs

PGDip in Leadership Development for NPOs

Acquire the leadership skills to helpprofessionalise the social sectorAll over the world, research confirms that it is leadership that makes a difference in organisational performance. This applies to organisations in the for-profit as well as social sector. This Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership Development for NPOs is based on this growing body of research. The programme acknowledges responsible leadership as the prime differentiator that drives sustainable performance, and impact. Using the framework of Me, We, Work and World, it focuses on the development of personal leadership, team leadership, organisational leadership and societal leadership to strengthen and deepen your capability to grow as leader.

This programme is designed as a learning journey for those who want to improve their understanding of what it takes to lead non-profit organisations (NPOs) towards fulfilling their social purpose. The programme taps into USB’s legacy of transformative leadership learning where you will learn how to lead yourself, others and your organisation in ways that can be described at ethical, responsible and sustainable. The programme pays special attention to the unique demands of leading in the face of complex social and environmental issues guided by a clear strategy, maintaining integrity and quality, and practising accountability to all stakeholders.

An investment in this programme as an individual, organisation or donor to an NPO is an investment in the development of resilient, resourceful and confident leadership at personal, organisational and societal levels.

It is an investment in social impact as NPOs have become our channels for services and support to the causes that we are passionate about. In NPOs we find people from all walks of life working together to take care of the most marginalised in society, to preserve endangered plants, animals and ecosystems, and to fight against corruption, human rights abuses and climate change impact.

While some of us volunteer time and talent, others step up to lead NPOs as managers, executives or directors. Leading in this context is both a noble and challenging act, and for most, a steep learning curve. NPO leaders often find themselves caught between big dreams and insufficient resources to realise these ideals. Sometimes they are disillusioned by the disjunction between their own selfless commitment and the ebb and flow of volunteer participation. While many have sought to lead an organisation with fewer bureaucratic demands, they surprisingly discover that their NPOs are not exempt from the duties of all other organisations in terms of human resources, finances, legal, compliance and auditing requirements, and reporting to stakeholders.

If leadership in an NPO context resonates with you then consider enhancing your leadership skills through participating in this PGDip in Leadership Development for NPOs.

PGDip in Leadership Development for NPOs

What you will gain fromthis qualification? Learning philosophy

Learning outcomes

Lead as a resilient, resourceful and confident person

NPO leaders mostly function in challenging and complex environments. Leading an NPO is demanding and it often takes its toll in the form of disillusionment and burnout. This programme is meant to improve your personal performance through enhancing your resilience, resourcefulness and confidence, invigorating you for the task of leading your organisation.

Enhance your ability to build organisational capacity

On the face of it, an NPO is an organisation like any other in which people, systems and structures need to be aligned to deliver a preferred outcome. In reality, NPOs are characterised by greater complexity. They are not motivated by profit, yet they need money; they mostly rely on volunteers, yet they cannot perform without a central and stable core of talent; they have to be as light as possible on structures and systems, yet for guidance and direction they need good governance and capable directors. This programme will grow your ability to build organisational capacity and enhance organisational health, well-being and performance.

Create public value and social impact

NPOs are established with a social purpose in mind. That purpose is mostly grounded in the belief that the NPO will advance an important agenda, change social conditions that are not fair or just, or care for those who happen to be on the margins of society. Society needs NPOs to live up to their purpose, to prove their public value and to make an impact. This programme will enable you to lead your organisation to take its rightful place in society and to deliver on what it was designed for in the first place.

Ensure social return on investment

NPOs are accountable to many stakeholders. Yet, they cannot survive without their donors. In society there are wealthy individuals, foundations, companies and government departments that want to partner with credible and sustainable NPOs in order to advance special social causes. These donors do not expect financial return on investment but social return. They want to see growth, impact, continuity and relevance resulting from their support. Working with them can be demanding; working without them can be debilitating. Knowing how to lead in collaboration with them is an essential aspect of an NPO leader’s skills set. This programme will enhance the stakeholder leadership skills you need to work with those who help to authorise and legitimise your work through their investments.

Benefit from network knowledge and peer learning skills

Being an NPO leader can be a lonely journey. Caught up in the demands of managing a social purpose organisation, there is seldom time to reflect or seek advice. This programme is embedded in a learning philosophy and immersed in learning activities through which you will learn how to make use of the wisdom and counsel of those with whom you share your journey. The knowledge and skills that you will gain in this regard will stand you in good stead in your organisation and in your stakeholder context.

The content of this programme is rooted in academic research and internationally benchmarked theory and practices. The main objective is to encourage students to combine academic rigour and experiential learning which is applied within the larger framework of internationally benchmarked action and work-based learning. The learning philosophy of this programme is based on the following:

• Offering a thriving learning environment – one that is creative, innovative, experimental, relational, peer-based and energising

Recognition of Prior Learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under RPL. Candidates who wish to be admitted under the RPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective students under the RPL policy have to adhere to the following:

• Have at least an NQF 6 qualification (all school and academic certificates are required).

• Have at least SIX years of working experience after obtaining the above-mentioned qualification, of which at least THREE years should have been in a management or related professional position.

• Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information on activities outside the work environment.

• Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.

The RPL selection process entails the following:

• USB’s Admissions Committee (programme head and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.

• If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the ability to cope with the demands of the programme, he/she may be admitted.

• A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.

• Important: RPL candidates need to apply by 31 October each year to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

Additional informationfor international students

Study visa requirements for international students

All residential students who are non-South African citizens and are studying at USB require a study visa. Prospective students should contact their nearest South African Mission (South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission), normally in their country of origin, to enquire about the requirements for study visas for South Africa. Applicants are required to present themselves in person so that biometric data may be captured. Students from West Africa can also contact USB’s representative for this region in Nigeria while students from East Africa can contact USB’s representative for this region in Kenya. (See contact details at the back of the brochure.) All international students can contact the USB International Office at [email protected] for assistance. All international students must hold a valid visa for their intended activity prior to entering South Africa.

Notes on obtaining a study visa

• Obtaining a study visa from the South African authorities takes approximately 12 to 16 weeks from the date of application. However, some missions may process applications sooner. Sufficient time should be allowed for study visa applications to be processed.

• Your study visa application should include a copy of the letter offering a place on USB’s study programme. This letter will be provided by USB’s Academic Administration once the application has been approved. A place on the programme must be confirmed before a study visa application can be considered by the South African Department of Home Affairs. Students should not proceed to Stellenbosch University or USB without a valid study visa.

• Although applicants are expected to determine exactly what they require to apply for a study visa, they can expect to have to provide the following, among others: a police clearance certificate, proof of medical insurance recognised in South Africa, a radiological report, proof of sufficient funds, and an admission letter from USB. Your nearest South African Mission will be able to advise in this regard. The onus falls on the student to make sure that he/she submits a complete application pack.

• All documents should be certified and translated into English before submission (in order not to delay the outcome of the application).
