ABATEMENT CASE STUDY

ASBESTOS ABATEMENT - STEEL MILLPueblo, ColoradoEstablished in 1881, EVRAZ Pueblo (then known as the Colorado

Fuel and Iron Company) helped to build the American west by

providing affordable steel and iron to the western territories and

the nation’s expanding rail systems. Multi-million dollar upgrades

were made to the mill, including the abatement and demolition of

historic coke ovens. Because of the large size of the structure, the

project required scaffolding and shrink wrap containment.

CASE STUDY

CONTAMINATED SOILDenver, ColoradoIn 1929, Denver celebrated the opening of its first

municipal airport which eventually became known as

Stapleton International Airport. The airport served

the greater Denver area and served as a hub for

several large carriers for more than 66 years.

Stapleton was closed in 1995 and decommissioned

after the Denver International Airport opened. About

4,700 acres of airport property is being redeveloped

into a major retail and residential neighborhood.

BELFOR Environmental played a key role in the

redevelopment project by:

• Remediating 50,000 cubic yards of non-friable

asbestos building debris and contaminated

soil;

• Remediating 500 cubic yards of friable

asbestos-contaminated soil;

• Remediating 1,300 cubic yards of soil

contaminated by aviation jet fuel.

“BELFOR Environmental has impressed us with their ability to use safe and effective work practices. Their compliance with environmental standards is extremely important to the success of this project.”

GROUND AND SURFACE WATERCONTAMINATIONCommerce City, ColoradoBELFOR Environmental remediated surface water

areas that had been impacted with hydrocarbons at the

perimeter of a petroleum refinery.

The scope of work was to work in conjunction with a

consultant to bring the groundwater treatment system

online. BELFOR Environmental technicians removed

product from the pond using various methods,

such as deploying containment, sorbent boom

application, installing vertical hydraulic barriers, and

the installation of piezometers including product

recovery pumps. All of these methods were used

in the operation over the course of 11 months.

Results of weekly samples dictated the necessity

to operate the Dewatering Treatment System (DTS).

BELFOR Environmental was hired to operate the

dewatering and conveyance systems 24 hours per

day in order to treat potentially hydrocarbon impacted

groundwater until the results of the sampling tested below

limits.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the job

that BELFOR Environmental did. We have

confidence that, when it comes to

environmental remediation projects, they

are a solid company with the resources,

knowledge and training to not only do

the job correctly but also to do it safely.”

GREG FLETCHERSuncor Energy Refinery

ASBESTOS ABATEMENTDenver, ColoradoAfter two attempts to sell abandoned power plant property, and to

make way for a new development project, BELFOR Environmental

was contracted to remove all of the asbestos-containing building

materials from the power plant and laundry. The power plant had

two large boilers that reached up to 15 feet. The boilers and all

associated piping had to be certified asbestos free, prior to

dismantling and demolition. BELFOR Environmental removed:

• 3,300 square feet of boiler insulation;

• 1,240 square feet of transite panels;

• 321 linear feet of caulking;

• 197 gaskets;

• 165 square feet paper felt material;

• 272 pipe fittings ranging from 1- 24 inches;

• 1,035 linear feet of pipe insulation ranging from 1- 24

inches;

• 1,200 square feet of tank insulation.

ASBESTOS AND LEAD REMOVALLittleton, ColoradoBELFOR Environmental was contracted to remove asbestos pipe

insulation and lead based paint on tank and pipe surfaces in a

three-story power plant. The plant has five boilers, two chillers

multiple transformers, switch gears, motors and pumps.. Cryogenic

and heat radiant testing were conducted. This was necessary to assist

in the retrofit of all piping and access portals for the scheduled upgrade.

HAZARDOUS WASTE REMOVALParker, ColoradoConstruction on a residence ceased and the building sat idle

for several years. During this time, pigeons were able to nest

within the residence and create a nuisance health hazard. Pigeon

guano was found on most horizontal surfaces and hard to reach

locations.

BELFOR Environmental was responsible for cleaning all surfaces for

biological contaminants. Services included:

• Installation of critical barriers

• Establishment of negative pressure

• Construction of a decontamination area with a clean room,

shower and equipment room.

• Abatement

• Final visual inspection by a third-party Industrial Hygienist

• Final clearance testing by a third-party Industrial Hygienist

• Encapsulation of the residence after the clearance testing

passed

• Tear down and demobilization

The objectives of the project were to: 1) maintain the integrity

of the building to prevent the migration of additional birds and

other rodents from entering the residence; 2) prior to removal, all

materials to be removed were wet down with a water and bleach

solution (1:10) mixture to minimize any airborne dust potentially

containing any vector borne organisms; 3) remove and properly

dispose of all impacted materials; 4) obtain final clearance for

biological hazards.
